3 Doelstelling WAMA (in English) Introduction Thanks to fast advances in the biomedical sciences, the healthcare systems in developed countries have helped to dramatically improve the quality of life. Obviously there is a strong imbalance between economically strong countries and developing countries in the advances of healthcare. The vast majority of medical research addresses (sub-)specialist health problems that are mainly relevant in the western world. This paradox is inherent to the way that our world economy is organized while the right to health care is an universal human right. Accessibility of knowledge is the most important condition for the development of good medical care. Successful sharing of knowledge requires an enthusiastic, ambitious and eager approach of all partners. The desperate need for medical knowledge of both physicians and scientists in developing countries has never been greater than nowadays. Many highly educated professionals in developing countries feel the urge to emigrate to countries which offer better education and future perspectives. This process undermines sustainable economic development and basic healthcare. By globally improving the access to medical knowledge, the WAMA Foundation aspires to enhance medical capabilities in developing countries. The aim is to improve the quality of life by improving local medical care through the global sharing of new medical insights. Specialistic and subspecialistic. With advent of new techniques and developments, medical knowledge and interventions are expanding at an enormous rate. Medical professionals are expected to focus on very specific areas. This is how new medical (sub)specialties are evolving. In our ever shrinking world the unequal distribution of access to this high quality healthcare becomes painfully apparent. Medical professionals from developing countries often need to obtain their knowledge of medical (sub-)specialties in developed countries. Financial and logistical problems like difficulties of certificate validation can arise in this situation. Moreover the medical setting and equipment and the range of pathology seen in guest countries differs from those at home. This is why WAMA focuses on providing local medical (sub-)specialty training. Consultation support of medical professionals will be provided at all times. Knowledge WAMA primarily focuses its energy on knowledge transfer. Actual patient care and transfer of goods at all times serve learning purposes. All medical (sub-)specialties. Since WAMA has an extensive network of medical specialists of all kinds, projects in various disciplines are possible. Important of course is that the project suits the 3

4 mission statement and the goals of WAMA. For the time being, the WAMA Foundation can provide advice and assistance in the following areas of specialization: ophthalmology (including orbit surgery), plastic and reconstructive surgery, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgery, neurology, psychiatry and internal medicine, radiology, pathology and microbiology. The Foundation is still young and in the process of further developing its array of medical specializations. Mission statement The WAMA Foundation aims at globally improving the capabilities of medical professionals and to provide access to medical (sub-)specialties in order to contribute to better healthcare worldwide. First aim: transfer of medical knowledge By investing in training and education, patients will ultimately receive a higher standard of healthcare quality. The transfer of medical knowledge involved in this process, can be achieved through different channels, by, for example, assisting local specialists in surgery or by drafting medical protocols for the transfer of knowledge. The aim is to develop practical solutions to concrete and relevant problems together with local medical communities within the local economic and socio-cultural context. Second aim: education Besides the transfer of medical knowledge, the WAMA Foundation also strives to improve the local infrastructure for medical education. Improving the infrastructure of medical education provides continuity to the transfer of knowledge. Investing in medical education, moreover, is essential for the future of healthcare. Third aim: scientific research In order to improve healthcare, the practice of advanced medical care desperately needs the contributions from scientific research, both clinical and epidemiological. It is essential to the development of an adequately functioning model of medical care. Hence, one of WAMA s core activities is the realization of partnerships for improving the infrastructure for scientific research in developing countries. 4

5 How does WAMA work? To reach our goals, our daily activities are aimed at: Deploying volunteer medical teams to selected regions and countries for the purpose of sharing medical knowledge. This can include providing local fellowship programs. Assisting local medical professionals in the development of scientific research facilities and programs. Organizing training courses and workshops for medical professionals worldwide. Giving advice on and setting up of infrastructural facilities for scientific medical research and medical education in selected regions and countries. Providing assistance to medical professionals in developing countries in order to improve and modernize their medical facilities and infrastructure. In selected cases funds are provided for short study trips abroad. WAMA prefers working in an assisting role. This means that we strongly encourage initiatives addressing knowledge transfer deriving from resource poor countries. Where does WAMA work? WAMA aims to stimulate local medical professionals to put their acquired knowledge and skill into practice. The existence of basic infrastructural facilities is essential to reaching this goal. WAMA is convinced that a successful local implementation of acquired knowledge and skill requires a relatively stable political situation. The sociopolitical context should provide ample opportunity for new developments in local medical practices. 5

6 Jaarverslag stichting WAMA 2004 Het afgelopen jaar is er veel gebeurd bij WAMA. Het is immers het oprichtingsjaar. Naast het uitdenken en vastleggen van de vele officiële zaken rond de stichting is er tevens een begin gemaakt met het leggen van contacten met de landen waar mogelijk projecten kunnen worden uitgevoerd. Organisatie Oprichting Na een eerste officiële vergadering in café De IJsbreker te Amsterdam krijgt de stichting-in-oprichting WAMA haar eerste contouren. Verschillende personen voor verschillende te vervullen functies passeren de revue. Op 9 januari van het jaar 2004 wordt de stichting World Wide Acces to Medical Advances, bij afkorting genaamd Stichting WAMA opgericht door drs Peerooz Saeed en drs Christian Daniel Schubart. Dit gebeurt bij Mr C.B. Bakker & Mr C.A. Boswijk notarissen te Aalsmeer. De stichting krijgt haar zetel te Amsterdam en op 13 januari is de stichting ingeschreven bij de Kamer van Koophandel te Amsterdam, onder nummer De stichting stelt zich ten doel het bevorderen van de toegankelijkheid van medisch specialistische zorg door middel van het wereldwijd verstrekken van medische kennis en diensten in regio s waar hier een structureel tekort aan is. Zij tracht dit doel onder meer te bereiken door: - het verlenen van medische hulp - het opleiden van medische hulpverleners en anderen - het bevorderen van kennisoverdracht - technische en facilitaire ondersteuning van medische hulpverleners binnen het kader van de beoogde kennisoverdracht - het bevorderen en doen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek - het uitbrengen van publicaties - het ondersteunen van andere hulporganisaties Tijdens de vergadering op 15 februari 2004 wordt besloten om vanaf maart elke zondag een WAMA borrel te houden om de stichting bruisend te krijgen Bij de ABN-AMRO wordt bankrekening geopend. Werkgroepen Financiën, promotie, logistiek Er wordt nagedacht over eventuele werkgroepen voor de gebieden Financiën, Promotie en Logistiek. Verschillende organogrammen en organisatorische schema s worden opgesteld om de toekomstige projecten goed in te kunnen bedden. Op het gebied van financiën wordt tevens een strategie ontwikkeld over manieren van sponsoring. Een van de ideeën die de revue passeren is dat op de website (die nog ontwikkeld moest worden) bijvoorbeeld in de toekomst artikelen als kunstwerken uit derde wereld landen, agenda s, WAMA-kalenders, WAMA t-shirts WAMA- 6

7 koffiemokken etc.. kunnen worden verkocht. Toen werd ook besloten dit voorlopig niet te doen. Nieuwsbrief De Nieuwsbrief werkgroep wordt in het najaar 2004 opgericht, bestaande uit Maarten Limper en Chris Schubart. In totaal worden er in nieuwsbrieven rondgestuurd naar geïnteresseerden en vrienden. Website en logo Eind 2004 wordt de website aangekocht. Voor de website zijn er verschillende versies content gemaakt. Er wordt zonder kosten een officieel logo, door het bedrijf Kurtontwerp ontworpen en aangeboden. Dit wordt in gebruik genomen na goedkeuring door het bestuur. Werkgroep Afrika De werkgroep Afrika wordt opgestart. Carel Schaars doet onderzoek naar Malawi, Annemarie Winkelhagen en Barbara Schimmer onderzoeken Tanzania, Chris Schubart onderzoekt de mogelijkheden van Kenia en Avital Amir onderwerpt Oeganda aan een studie. In de zomer van 2004 wordt een Symposium georganiseerd om de resultaten van de verschillende studies te bekijken. De mogelijke targets van WAMA worden onder de loep genomen. Besloten wordt dat in het bijzonder Tanzania een goed land is om contacten mee te leggen in de toekomst. Projecten Suriname Er worden diverse voorbereidingen getroffen voor de verkennende reis naar Suriname, in januari Uiteindelijk is het de bedoeling om na deze reis te besluiten of het organiseren van een cursus en een congres in Suriname tot een reële mogelijkheid behoort. Vietnam Een van de landen van aandacht is Vietnam. Er is contact gelegd met het Medisch Comité Vietnam. Hierna is er ook gepraat met de Universiteit van Hanoi. Peerooz Saeed wordt met een team van orbita specialisten uitgenodigd om een bezoek te brengen aan Vietnam. Deze reis is gepland in Deze reis is als oriëntatie bedoeld, hierna volgen in principe meerdere medische missies. 7
