2 Vader en zoon Skidelsky schreven hun boek How Much is Enough Money and the Good Life vanuit de vaststelling dat de moderne interpretatie van het goede leven en van vooruitgang blijkt neer te komen op ongebreidelde consumptie. Zij stellen daartegenover een set van basisgoederen die van belang zijn voor menselijk geluk, met name gezondheid, veiligheid, vrije tijd, respect, vriendschap, persoonlijkheid en harmonie met de natuur. Niettegenstaande dat dit ook kan worden bediscussieerd, geeft het toch een bredere definitie van geluk dan metingen gebaseerd op bnp en economische groei. Hoe kunnen we onze kapitaal- en arbeidsmarkten hervormen als voorwaarde om tot een meer ethische samenleving op mensenmaat te komen? ucsia en de Federatie van oudleerlingenbonden van de Vlaamse jezuïetencolleges leggen de vraag voor aan toonaangevende binnen- en buitenlandse economische experts. 3 programma deel 1 14:00 Welkom door Luc Braeckmans academisch onderdirecteur ucsia 14:05 Inleiding door Olivier Wouters voorzitter Federatie oudleerlingenbonden Vlaamse jezuïetencolleges Lord Skidelsky is emeritus professor politieke economie aan de Universiteit van Warwick. Zijn driedelige biografie van de economist John Maynard Keynes (1983, 1992, 2000) werd bekroond met meerdere prijzen. Een herziene uitgave van zijn boek over de huidige crisis Keynes: The Return of the Master, werd in 2010 gepubliceerd. Hij werd member in The House of Lords in 1991 en is Fellow van de British Academy sinds Hij is directeur van Rusnano Capital en voormalig directeur van Janus Capital and Sistema jsc. Zijn recente boek, How Much is Enough? The Love of Money and the Case for the Good Life, geschreven met zijn zoon Edward, verscheen in Skidelsky werkt aan een nieuw boek, The Language of the Virtues, dat zal worden uitgegeven bij Princeton University Press. 14:10 The Future of Work: In Need of a Proper Moral Debate Lezing door Robert Skidelsky Emeritus Professor Political Economy, University of Warwick Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large, Cornell University In his recent book, How Much is Enough? The Love of Money and the Case for the Good Life, Robert Skidelsky states that the material basis for our updated version of Keynes s Economic Possibilities is rooted in the logic which gave rise to his possibilities in the first place: the long-term decrease in the demand for labour resulting from continuous improvements in labour productivity. We can either turn this to our advantage by greatly expanding the domain of shared work and leisure a solution which at least some European countries have adopted or continue with the Anglo-American system of want-creation powered by insatiability, maintained at the cost of growing job insecurity and income inequality, and heedless of humanity s future. He makes a plea for social arrangements in favour of the good life,... in which moneymaking is not central. This presupposes a state that makes its ethical choices explicit, so that we may have a proper moral debate, rather than pretending that it acts solely as the agent of the isolated consumer. 4 programma deel 2 15:30 The Financial Crisis: Towards a New Ethics and Governance Structure for the Financial Sector? Lezing door Luc Coene gouverneur van de Nationale Bank van België lid van de raad van Bestuur en de Algemene Raad van de Europese Centrale Bank Luc Coene is gouverneur van de Nationale Bank van België. The presentation will first focus on the causes of the financial crisis which contributed to an overdevelopment of the financial sphere: low interest rates, the search for yield and flaws in prudential regulation and supervision. With an increasing demand for high yield investments, the financial sector produced products which promised a high yield and were (apparently) safe. From 2007, the problems with these products came to the fore. They were a major cause of the financial crisis. Behind the production of these high yield products were significant flaws in the ethics and governance structure of the financial sector (some of the most serious problems related to bonuses), facilitated by weaknesses in the regulation and supervision (both from a micro- and macro-prudential perspective) of the financial sector.
