1 Onderzoeksgemeenschap rond het Ontwerp van stedelijke Geluidslandschappen (OOG) Collectif de Recherche sur la Conception des Paysages Sonores Urbains Research Community on the Design of Urban Soundscapes Bondige omschrijving van de wetenschappelijke krachtlijnen van de samenwerking die door de Wetenschappelijke Onderzoeksgemeenschap wordt beoogd Lawaai is heden ten dage alomtegenwoordig, en dit legt een zware hypotheek op ons welzijn, vooral maar niet alleen voor wie in een stedelijke omgeving woont, werkt, ontspant... Omgevingsgeluid speelt een belangrijke rol in de perceptie van de kwaliteit van de leefomgeving, en er is een groeiende publieke bezorgdheid omtrent het verstorend effect van een ongunstige leefomgeving op de volksgezondheid. Het huidige beleid zet vooral, en in eerste instantie terecht, in op het reduceren van het (tijdsgemiddeld) geluiddrukniveau. Dit leidt echter niet noodzakelijk tot een betere levenskwaliteit. Gemiddelde geluidniveaus verklaren slechts een deel van de variantie in geluidhinder; spectrale of tijdsgerelateerde aspecten hebben eveneens een invloed. Daarnaast is het algemeen aanvaard dat de perceptie van omgevingsgeluid niet enkel door de fysische blootstelling aan geluid wordt bepaald. Persoonlijke factoren, zoals gevoeligheid voor geluid of aanpassingsvermogen, en contextuele factoren, zoals topografie, landschap, bebouwing, weersomstandigheden of de aanwezigheid van natuurlijke elementen, beïnvloeden de impact van geluid op een individu. Meer nog, het reduceren van de impact van omgevingsgeluid tot louter hinder, geluidniveaus en wetgeving, is een negatieve aanpak, waarbij de mogelijke positieve effecten van een passend geluidklimaat op welzijn niet in rekening worden gebracht. Binnen de akoestisch ecologische visie, een recente ontwikkeling in het onderzoek naar omgevingsgeluid, wordt een meer positieve, proactieve en holistische weg bewandeld. Vertrekkend vanuit het besef dat de perceptie van geluid deels afhangt van omgevingsaspecten en zelfs van de gemoedstoestand van de luisteraar (men gebruikt de term soundscape of geluidslandschap om dit te benadrukken), beoogt men het creëren van aangename en duurzame (leef)omgevingen, als bijdrage tot een betere levenskwaliteit. Akoestisch ontwerp streeft naar een passend geluidslandschap bij elke context, waarbij omgevingsgeluid niet als lawaai wordt beschouwd, maar als een waardevol en inzetbaar ontwerpmiddel. Hiervoor is het noodzakelijk dat kennis aanwezig binnen verschillende wetenschapsdomeinen (akoestiek, architectuur en ruimtelijke planning, psychologie en sociologie etc.) wordt samengebracht. Het dient te worden vermeld dat akoestisch ontwerp traditionele lawaaibestrijding complementeert: dit laatste zal steeds noodzakelijk zijn wanneer het geluidklimaat ontoelaatbaar sterk verstoord is door een ongewenst geluid. De voorliggende wetenschappelijke onderzoeksgemeenschap zal via het onderzoek door de verschillende partners een bijdrage leveren in het vergaren van kennis, de ontwikkeling van modellen en de uitbouw van instrumenten ter ondersteuning van ontwerpers en politici bij de planning van stedelijke en landelijke omgevingen. Daarnaast zal de onderzoeksgemeenschap de kwaliteit en samenhang van het interdisciplinair onderzoek rond geluidslandschappen aan de Vlaamse onderzoeksinstellingen verhogen door het samenbrengen van de expertise die bij de verschillende partners aanwezig is. De gezamenlijke onderzoeksthema s van de verschillende partners kaderen binnen twee centrale uitdagingen. Enerzijds, het bepalen van geschikte akoestische indicatoren voor de evaluatie van geluidslandschappen (bestaand of in ontwerp) met een goede balans tussen wetenschappelijke validiteit (gegrond in auditieve perceptie) en technische toepasbaarheid in het akoestisch ontwerpproces. Anderzijds, het zoeken naar innovatieve en wetenschappelijk onderbouwde technieken voor akoestisch ontwerp en beleidsondersteuning. Om deze wetenschappelijke doelstelling te concretiseren zullen gemeenschappelijke scientific playgrounds gebruikt worden. Twee toekomstige stadsontwikkelingen, de Waalse Krook in Gent en Nieuw Zurenborg in Antwerpen, werden met dit doel voor ogen reeds geselecteerd. 1/10

Timothy Van Renterghem, deeltijds docent Bondige omschrijving van de specifieke inbreng van deze onderzoekseenheid De Onderzoeksgroep Akoestiek bezit reeds een ruime ervaring binnen het onderzoek naar geluidslandschappen. De huidige focus ligt vooral op het bottom-up modelleren van de perceptie van omgevingsgeluid, o.a. als complementaire techniek aan het gebruik van luistertesten bij auralisatie. Dit omvat o.a. het modelleren van auditory scene analysis van omgevingsgeluid, bronherkenning, cognitieve en emotionele reacties op geluid, en inter-individuele variatie, aan de hand van synthetische populaties. Het gebruik van doorgedreven computationele technieken staat hierin centraal. Dit onderzoek kadert binnen een FWO en een IWT/SBO project (IDEA) en maakt deel uit van een Europese COST Action (TD0804) en een FP7 coordinatie actie (ENNAH). Belangrijkste onderzoeksthema's van de onderzoekseenheid Binnen de Onderzoeksgroep Akoestiek wordt reeds meer dan 15 jaar onderzoek verricht naar omgevingsgeluid en de invloed daarvan op de mens. De klemtoon ligt hierbij op het vergaren van wetenschappelijke kennis rond, en het bestuderen van technieken voor het verbeteren van de akoestische kwaliteit van de leefomgeving. Daarnaast spitst het onderzoek zich toe op het ontwikkelen van geavanceerde numerieke instrumenten voor beleidsondersteuning. Onderzoeksthema s behandelen de fysische, technologische en psychologische aspecten van omgevingsgeluid, en omvatten o.a. propagatie van geluid in de atmosfeer, geluidskartering, voorspelling van geluids- en geurhinder, modellering van de perceptie van omgevingsgeluid, ontwerp van (stedelijke) geluidslandschappen, MER rapportering van mobiliteitsplannen en industriële projecten en beleidsondersteuning. De groep participeerde in een project in het kader van de Science for Sustainable Development actie van de FOD Wetenschapsbeleid, met de specifieke opdracht SD/TA05B DRUPSSuC: Ontwerp en renovatie van stedelijke publieksruimten in het kader van duurzame steden. Uitgaande van deze ervaring kan de onderzoeksgroep een waardevolle bijdrage leveren tot de doelstellingen van de onderzoeksgemeenschap. De onderzoeksinvulling richt zich hierbij op de brede parametrische omschrijving van het auditieve verwachtingspatroon voor specifieke stedelijke omgevingen. Belangrijkste onderzoeksthema's van de onderzoekseenheid De onderzoeksgroep is actief op het vlak van bouwakoestiek, zaalakoestiek en lawaaibeheersing. Het Laboratorium Akoestiek beschikt over de nodige meetuitrusting, met o.a. geluidisolatiemeetkamers en anechoïsche kamers. Hierbij zijn het akoestisch materiaalonderzoek rond geluidtransmissie en geluidabsorptie erg belangrijke aandachtspunten. Op het vlak van zaalakoestiek zijn in de loop der jaren markante bijdragen geleverd en is er expertise uitgewerkt op het vlak van simulatie. De laatste jaren is op dit vlak vooral onderzoek verricht naar de prognose en de perceptie van richtingsinformatie in het geluidveld dat een toehoorder bereikt (lopend FWO project virtuele akoestiek, VIRTAK). Op het vlak van lawaaibeheersing is er een ruime didactische ervaring en legt de groep zich in hoofdzaak toe op dienstverlening (akoestische MER Vlaamse luchthavens, diverse grote industriële complexen...). De interdisciplinaire samenwerking tussen de masteropleidingen monumentenzorg, landschapszorg en stedenbouw, kan een toegevoegde waarde betekenen voor het onderzoek van stedelijke geluidslandschappen door een plaats te geven aan stilte als intangible aspect binnen de ontsluiting van stedelijke waardevolle gebieden. Belangrijkste onderzoeksthema's van de onderzoekseenheid Het lopend onderzoek focust zich op de interactie van een ontwikkelings- en ontwerpgerichte omgang met cultuurhistorische waarden van stedelijke gebieden en het onderzoeken van de ontsluitingsinterventies van dit erfgoed. Geluiden in relatie tot materiaal, functie, vorm en ruimte zijn in onze westerse cultuur naar de achtergrond verdwenen. Geluidsaspecten maken echter eveneens deel uit van de culturele biografie van stedelijke landschappen, de genius loci van de plek. Het onderzoek naar de wijze waarop auditieve belevingswaarden kunnen ingezet worden als instrument voor revitalisatie van stedelijke kernen, sluit aan bij dit project. She has been working with questions on music/sound/space/architecture for more than twenty years. Since 2004, Catharina Dyrssen is part of the interdisciplinary art based research group Urban Sound Institute, USIT ( Her teaching and research also includes Research by Design theory and methods. USIT has been funded by the Swedish National Research Council from 2005 onward, for two large art/design based research projects (Transmission, and Into Noise) of which Dyrssen is the project leader. Within art based research on sound, USIT is probably the most well known in Scandinavia. The research group has made several exhibitions and design projects and has extensive international contacts. Cresson advocates a qualitative approach liable to help and perhaps influence design strategies and processes. After concentrating initially on the sound space, the laboratory extended the scope of its inquiries in the 1990s to include the many dimensions of in situ sensory perception. Our research addresses phenomena related to light, heat, smell, touch and bodily movement. Research draws on original pluridisciplinary methods, at the meeting point between human and social science, between architecture and engineering science. The laboratory developed its basic methods and concepts, such as sound effects and acoustic, architectural formers and experience of ambiances. Major research topics of the research unit Ambiance remains the central theme in our scientific scheme, but taken in conjunction and articulated with three other terms: environment, project and society. In a sense our aim is to propose a research standpoint from which to start anew on ambiance and to work outwards from it. By proceeding in this way ambiance becomes an operational concept while remaining a thematic concept opening onto contemporary social problems and taking advantage of its practical, heuristic potential. Our scientific scheme centres on three main topics: ambiance and environment, ambiance and project, ambiance and society. Our goal is to study architectural and urban ambiances from the inside, exploring them for their own sake (how they are experienced, how they express themselves and how an ambiance is created), but also to relate them to other fields, testing them there.
