2 TOELICHTING De catastroe die Jaan o 11 maart heet getroen heet een enorme indruk o me gemaakt en me die geraakt. Een van de redenen hiervoor is dat ik net een stuk had geschreven voor de Philharmonic Winds Osakan en hun dirigent Yoshihiro Kimura toen het gebeurde. Een andere reden is de veelvoud aan ilmjes die o Youtube zijn gelaatst: verschrikkelijke scènes, ik heb nog nooit zoiets gezien. Door deze dingen kwam het zoveel dichterbij dan zoveel dramatische gebeurtenissen uit het verleden, waarover ik had gehoord o de radio o gelezen in de krant. En boveno dit alles is er het gigantische en onvoorzienbare lange termijn eect van radioactieve straling. Ik voelde de behoete iets te doen. Maar wat kan een comonist uit een ver weg gelegen land als Holland anders doen dan een muziekstuk comoneren? Ik besloot dus een elegie te schrijven, gebaseerd o volksmelodieën uit de zwaarst getroen gebieden. Ik schree mijn vriend Koji Kakutani, die me romt inormatie toezond over enkele traditionele volksmelodieën uit de reecturen Iwate, Miyagi en Fukushima. Hij voegde eraan toe dat de heer Kimura bereid was het toekomstige stuk uit te voeren. Ik koos één melodie uit elk van deze reecturen en baseerde de elegie o deze drie melodieën. Dit zijn, in de volgorde waarin ze in de muziek voorkomen: - Aizu Bandai-san, een lied over de vulkaan van de berg Bandai in Fukushima - Tairyou Utaikomi, een visserslied uit Miyagi - Nanbu Usioi Uta, een herderslied uit Iwate Partituur en artijen zijn gratis verkrijgbaar in de vorm van Sibelius o PDF bestanden. Een verzoek daartoe kan worden gezonden naar alexander@comitas.org. Inkomsten via auteursrechtenorganisatie BUMA doneer ik aan de organisatie Gakki or Kids (htt:// die zich er o toelegt muziekinstrumenten aan te schaen voor kinderen uit de getroen gebieden. Ik ben me er zeer van bewust dat deze bescheiden comositie o geen enkele manier de last kan verlichten van het verlies van amilieleden, vrienden en dierbare bezittingen, en het leed van verwondingen en ziektes. Maar ik hoo dat de muziek enige troost moge bieden en dat mensen het straaltje hoo mogen ervaren waarmee het stuk eindigt. Eduard de Boer, mei 2011 INTRODUCTION The catastrohe that came over Jaan on March the 11 th made an enormous imression on me and touched me deely. One o the reasons or this was that I had just written a iece or the Philharmonic Winds Osakan and their conductor Yoshihiro Kimura when it haened. Another reason was the multitude o movies that were osted on Youtube: horrible scenes, unlike anything I have ever seen. Because o all this, it came so much closer than so many dramatic events rom the ast that I had heard about on the radio or read about in newsaers. And on to o it all there is the huge and unoreseeable long-term imact o radioactive radiation. I elt the urge to do something. But what can a comoser in a araway country like Holland do, other than comose a iece o music? So I decided to write an elegy, based on olk melodies rom the most heavily aected areas. I wrote to my riend Koji Kakutani, who romtly sent me inormation about some traditional olk melodies rom the reectures Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, adding that Mr. Kimura would be willing to erorm the uture iece. I chose one melody rom each o these reectures and based the elegy on these three melodies. In order o aearance, they are: - Aizu Bandai-san, a song about the volcano o mount Bandai in Fukushima - Tairyou Utaikomi, a ishermen s song rom Miyagi - Nanbu Usioi Uta, a cow herding song rom Iwate Score and arts can be obtained or ree, in the orm o Sibelius or PDF data, by sending a request to alexander@comitas.org. Royalties are donated to the organisation Gakki or Kids, that has committed itsel to urchasing musical instruments or children rom the areas that were struck by the tsunami. I am very much aware o the act that this modest comosition cannot in any way relieve the burden o having lost relatives, riends and belongings o ersonal value, and the grie o injuries and illnesses. But I do hoe that the music may give some comort and that eole may exerience the ray o hoe with which the iece ends. Eduard de Boer, May 2011
