Presentaties De oralpresentations en de posterdiscussions vinden plaats in Studio 3 (plenaire zaal). De posters staan opgesteld in aangrenzende ruimtes. Alle voordrachten en presentaties vinden plaats onder leiding van moderatoren. Op de dag zelf worden abstractboeken ter beschikking gesteld. Voertaal De voordrachten in de plenaire zaal zijn Engelstalig. De presentaties bij de poster walk around mogen in de Nederlandse taal gehouden worden. Evaluatie U ontvangt in de week na de Wetenschapsdag een (digitaal) evaluatieformulier. Wij verzoeken u vriendelijk deze in te vullen. Het organiserend comité stelt uw mening zeer op prijs. 3 Geachte collegae, Dit jaar vindt de Wetenschapsdag van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Anesthesiologie voor de zesde keer plaats! Het organiserend comité is verheugd u een interessant en afwisselend programma te kunnen aanbieden. De commissie constateert een duidelijk stijgende lijn in de kwaliteit van de ingezonden abstracts. Het is goed om te zien dat meer en meer collegae belangstelling tonen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek binnen de Anesthesiologie, van medisch student tot ervaren staflid, van beginner tot doorgewinterde onderzoeker. Voor het eerst heeft de commissie ook abstracts uit het buitenland toegezonden gekregen. Ook dit jaar is een tweetal zeer gerenommeerde sprekers als gastsprekers uitgenodigd, Steven Shafer en Maryam Khosravi. In dit programmaboekje worden zij aan u voorgesteld. Ook heeft de commissie de ontvanger van de Young Investigator Grant 008 gevraagd om de eerste onderzoeksresultaten te presenteren. De Wetenschapsdag is bedoeld om onderzoekers en alle geïnteresseerden de mogelijkheid te geven elkaar te ontmoeten en te inspireren. 9 Ronald Deumens, Ph.D. SHORT BIOGRAPHY Postdoctoral fellow, Department of Anesthesiology, Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, The Netherlands Dr. Deumens obtained his M.Sc. degree cum laude from the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (00), and his Ph.D. degree from the Maastricht University (006). Dr. Deumens visited the Norman and Sadie Lee Research Center of the Medical Research Council in London, UK (00), where he acquired special cell culture techniques. Dr. Deumens joined the Department of Anesthesiology at the Maastricht University Medical Center in 006 and during this time he worked for one year as a research fellow at the Department of Neuropathology of the RWTH University Hospital in Aachen, D ( ) and for three months as a research fellow at the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of California San Diego, USA ( ). Currently he is also research coordinator at the Department of Anesthesiology of the Maastricht University Medical Center. Novel Avenues in Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury Pain: Targeting Inflammation The complex interplay between immune cells and neurons strongly contributes to central neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury (SCI). This process of neuroinflammation does not only elicit degeneration of spinal tissue, but also triggers sensitization of spinal nociceptive neurons. The finding that wide-range immune suppression has limited if any benefit on SCI outcome suggests that SCI-induced inflammation has favorable characteristics. Indeed, it was shown that formation of a peri-lesional scar is a vital aspect of SCI inflammation as it limits expansion of tissue damage. Hence, scar development per se should not be impeded by immune suppressant therapeutics for SCI. In the present research project, novel avenues in immune modulatory therapies are taken aiming at early enhancement of scar formation in order to reduce tissue loss due to inflammatory processes. These novel approaches are then compared to wide-range immune suppression at the level of spinal tissue preservation as well as outcome on central neuropathic pain.

10 Steven Shafer Critical Thinking in Anesthesia Dr. Shafer completed his undergraduate education at Princeton University, medical school at Stanford University, anesthesia residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and post-graduate fellowship in clinical pharmacology at Stanford University. He was on the faculty at Stanford for 0 years, leaving in 008 to join the faculty of Columbia University, where he is Professor of Anesthesiology. He is also Adjunct Professor of Anesthesia at Stanford University, Adjunct Professor of Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California at San Francisco, and Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia. SHORT BIOGRAPHY Dr. Shafer s research interests are the clinical pharmacology of intravenous anesthetic drugs. He has published extensively on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of most of the intravenous hypnotics and opioids using in anesthetic practice. However, his interest is less in the drugs themselves than in the mathematical models that characterize drug behavior. These include conventional pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models, inverse models (used to drive target controlled infusion systems), Bayesian models (used to handle model uncertainty), models of drug interaction, and models that relate drug behavior to in silico pharmacogenetics. His work has resulted in over 00 research publications, numerous editorials, several dozen book chapters, and 7 patents. His FAER lecture will tie unidentified flying objects, Iraq, Bayesian inference, CPR guidelines, extrasensory perception, television game shows, Barack Obama, secondary endpoints in clinical trials, cold fusion, intelligent design, magnetic therapy, Pi, Fox News, and Richard Feynman to the role of physicians in distinguishing scientific evidence from pseudoscientific nonsense.

11 Maryam Khosravi How much oxygen is enough? Caudwell Xtreme Everest is a research project coordinated by the Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme (CASE) environment medicine - doctors using extreme physical environments to investigate human physiology. Caudwell Xtreme Everest placed a research team on the summit of Mount Everest in 007 and made the highest ever measurement of the level of oxygen in human arterial blood on the Balcony at 8400m. This was the centrepiece of an extensive programme of research into hypoxia (low oxygen levels), altitude illness and human performance at extreme altitude. The CASE team hopes that the lessons learned from studying humans in life at the limits of survival can be brought back to the bedside to help in the care of critically ill children and adults. 12 De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Anesthesiologie roept op tot indienen van een aanvraag voor de voor een periode van twee jaar De onderzoeker, het onderzoek en de infrastructuur De aanvrager is reeds gepromoveerd of bevindt zich in de laatste fase van zijn promotieonderzoek en is lid van de NVA (promotiedatum binnen één jaar). Naast wetenschappelijke ambitie beschikt de aanvrager over een duidelijk en goed uitgewerkt plan voor vervolgonderzoek. De resultaten van het voorgestelde onderzoek dienen voor de anesthesiologie belangrijke klinische of fundamentele onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden. Multidisciplinaire onderzoeksamenwerking wordt sterk aangemoedigd. Op de afdeling of binnen de vakgroep waar hij/zij werkt is een goede infrastructuur voor onderzoek en een senioronderzoeker die als begeleider en klankbord functioneert. Matching : de afdeling draagt bij aan de kosten van het onderzoek Een dergelijke persoonsgebonden tweejarige NVA subsidie kan slechts voor een deel kostendekkend zijn. Van de instelling waar de onderzoeker werkzaam is, wordt verwacht dat deze een bijdrage levert aan het project welke minimaal gelijk is aan de toegekende subsidie ( matching ). Deze bijdrage kan bestaan uit het ter beschikking stellen van (een deel van) de onderzoektijd, onderzoekassistentie (research nurse) of laboratoriumfaciliteiten.
