During this reception Scouts will be decorated for their annual support.

7 Afgelopen 10 maart waren wij als bestuur te gast in Valkenwaard, waar een groep van enthousiastelingen is gestart met grafadoptie op Valkenswaard War Cemetery. Succes! Uiteraard hebben wij ook een mooi bloemstuk gelegd ter ere van de gevallenen. Zie voor meer informatie: Last 10 March, we were guest in Valkenswaard, where a group of enthusiasts has launched grave adoption on Valkenswaard War Cemetery. Good luck! Zijn zoon Wim heeft het stokje overgenomen en is de huidige adoptant. Old adoption certificate from 1945 of Mr. Nic Jetten. Mr. Nic Jetten adopted the grave of Pte. J.H. Parrott. His son Wim is the current adopter.

13 The Highland Light Infantry (HLI) was formed in the 1881 Army reforms by merging the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) and the 74th (Highland) Regiment of Foot, which became its 1st and 2nd Battalions respectively. Both these regiments were highland units, but the new unit recruited in Glasgow, so it became the only highland regiment given the lowland uniform of trews (trousers). Did you know? A Matter of Life and Death: The actor David Niven was an officer in the regiment between the two World Wars. No skirts allowed: The HLI were the only highland regiment to wear trews (tartan trousers) as part of their full dress. Kilts were not authorised until Straight from hell: The regimental nickname was 'Hell's Last Issue', inspired by the unit's initials of HLI.

He fought with 4/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. September/October 1944 the 4/5th Battalion was attached to the 52nd Lowland Infantry Division. They took part in the daunting, vital, and complicated 5-week Battle of Scheldt. The 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division earned high praise in it's part of the success with opening the port of Antwerp enabling Allied use for supply lines through NW Europe. After 5 weeks of battle, the 52nd stayed at Walcheren Island through November On December 5, the 52nd was was transferred to the British XXX Corps. By the time of John McKay's death, the 4/5th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers was around the River Meuse. Securing bridges over the River Meuse was what his unit was tasked with during the Battle of the Bulge; with John McKay and buddy, Jack Blackburn, both in the 4/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers, falling in battle December 16, He is buried not far from where he fell near the Meuse, at Brunssum Cemetery in the Netherlands. When brothers fall in War, our minds undoubtedly turn to the grief of their dear fathers and mothers. However, on April 29, 1935 (her 22nd wedding anniversary), Mary Flora McKay, age 49, died of a stroke. Her husband Neil, age 55, died 4 years later on September 12, The parents of Don and John were spared the grief of their son's deaths, but not so the 5 surviving siblings of the McKay family, having lost so many family members in a short period of time. We remember him, his older brother Donald, and their families they left behind. This humble family from Glasglow sacrified much and we remember and honor your loved ones.

20 Aan al onze weldoeners. Als penningmeester van onze stichting wil ik graag even het woord aan u richten. Na het invoeren van de financiën in de boekhouding van het eerste kwartaal 2017 is duidelijk te zien dat enkelen onder u onze oproep om een jaarlijkse donatie te doen, ter harte heeft genomen. De adoptanten die beschikken over een adres hebben we een persoonlijk bedankje gestuurd. Dit willen we in deze nieuwsbrief graag nog eens herhalen. Wij zijn u daarvoor heel erkentelijk. Zoals u inmiddels weet, hebben wij in 2016 de regels voor adoptie enigszins aangepast. In plaats van een registratie donatie van 5,00 vragen wij nu de nieuwe adoptanten een JAARLIJKSE bijdrage van het kleine bedrag van 5,00. Aan onze oproep aan de oude adoptanten om tot een jaarlijkse bijdrage over te gaan, hebben velen onder u gehoor gegeven. Diegenen die daarover nog nadenken willen we graag zeggen: ALSTUBLIEFT DOEN! Zonder uw financiële ondersteuning redden we het niet. We grijpen iedere gelegenheid aan om inkomsten te generen. Als voorbeeld: We geven rondleidineng, c.q. uitleg aan de leerlingen van het Romboutscollege. Zij hebben een jaarlijks uitwisselingsprogramma met een school in Hückelhoven (bij Heinsberg), Duitsland. Wij vertellen hen de geschiedenis van ons Oorlogskerkhof en wijzen hen op de vaak héél jonge leeftijd van de jongens die hun leven hebben gegeven voor onze vrijheid. We vragen hen dan of ze een broer hebben die 17 (onze jongste soldaat) of 18 jaar is zodat het beter voor te stellen is. Meestal hebben ze die wel en gaan op zoek naar de graven van die jonge soldaten. En daarvan zijn véél te veel op ons kerkhof. Daarnaast presenteren wij ons op bijvoorbeeld de Veteranendag en binnenkort ook op de viering van het jubileum van het Joint Forces Head Quarters, bij de meesten van u bekend als AFCENT. Door bij deze gelegenheden de speciale postzegels te verkopen, ontvangen wij een bijdrage voor onze stichting. Buiten de adoptiebijdragen is verleden jaar de 50 euro friends in het leven geroepen. Verscheidene bedrijven en particulieren die ons een warm hart toedragen hebben een donatie gestort van 50,00 hetgeen ons een beetje meer adem geeft. Ook deze bedrijven danken wij van ganser harte. Hun logo (voor zover zij liever niet vermeld worden) treft u aan het eind van de nieuwsbrief aan. Als u het leuk vindt om een praatje te maken: de damesbestuursleden zijn herkenbaar aan de zwart/rode poppyshawl en de poppyparaplu (de Rembrella). Iedereen kent Ruud!! Tot dan. See you. 21 To all our benefactors, Being the treasurer of our foundation, I like to address a few words to you. After dealing with our financial transactions of the first term of 2017 it is very clear that some of you complied with our request to make a yearly donation. We sent a personal message to the adoptants with an address to thank them. In this newsletter we like to repeat our thanks. We are very grateful. As you know in the meantime, we slightly adapted the rules for adoption. Instead of an entryfee into the register of only 5,00 we now ask our new adoptant an AN- NUAL contribution of the small amount of 5,00. With our request to the old adoptants to comply to this new rule, many of you have given a positive reaction. Those who are still considering to do so, we like to say: PLEASE DO! Without you financial support we are not able to manage. We embrace every opportunity to raise income. As an example: we receive the pupils of the Romboutscollege. Every year they have an exchange programme with a German school just across the border. We explain the history of our War Cemetery and tell them about the often very young age of the boys who gave their lives for our freedom. We ask them if they have a brother in the age of 17 or 18 years to make it more vivid to them. Very often they have and then go and look for the graves of these young soldiers. There are too many of them in our Cemetery. Apart of this, we present ourselves at i.g. the Veteransday and coming May 31st at the jubilee of the Joint Foprces Head Quarters, known to most of you as AFCENT. By selling the special stamps at these opportunities, we receive a contribution for our foundation. Last year we introduced the 50 euro friends besides our adoptioncontribution. Several firms and private persons that are kindly disposed towards our foundation transferred the amount of 50,00 thus giving us a little more space. You can find their logo (unless they prefer not to be mentioned) at the end of the newsletter. 22 Royal Engineers naar Brunssum - Zondag 12 augustus 2018 Op Zondag 12 augustus 2018 zal een flinke afvaardiging van de Royal Engineers, al dan niet met band Brunssum War Cemetery bezoeken. Dit om de laatste eer te bewijzen aan hun in gevallen strijdmakkers, welke hier in Brunssum liggen begraven. Ook zal men het slagveld net over de Duitse grens bezoeken. De heren willen ook graag in contact komen met de adoptanten van de graven van de Royal Engineers. Royal Engineers visit Brunssum - Sunday 12 August 2018 On Sunday 12 August 2018 a delegation of the Royal Engineers will visit Brunssum, to pay respect to their fallen comrades in , which are buried here in Brunssum. They will also visit the battlefield just across the German border.

23 Het Corps of Royal Engineers of kortweg Royal Engineers is een van de korpsen van het British Army. De Royal Engineers verschaffen genisten en andere technische ondersteuning aan de British Armed Forces. De leden zelf worden ook vaak sappeurs genoemd. Het Corps of Royal Engineers wordt geleid door de Chief Royal Engineer. Het Corps of Royal Engineers is onderverdeeld in verschillende regimenten verspreid over het Verenigd Koninkrijk van Groot-Brittannië en Noord-Ierland en Duitsland. Zowel het hoofdkwartier van de regimenten als de Royal School of Military Engineering bevinden zich in Chatham (graafschap Kent).
