5 Effects of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program on Existential Fulfillment Y. Ducaneaux-Teeuwen Summary Background Many researches among a big variety of participants have shown that the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program has been proven to be effective in reducing fear, stress and pain related complaints. The question is if this program makes a positive contribution to existential fulfillment. The main question however is what effect the MBSR program has on women in the area of existential fulfilment. Aim The aim of this research is to find out to what extent the MBSR-program is effective on women on the criterion of existential fulfillment with the sub dimensions self-acceptance, self-actualization and self-trancendention. Participants, procedures and research design A group of 34 women responded voluntarily to posters, flyers and news ads. Ultimately 27 women have completed the MBSR program. The age of the participants varied from 26 to 56 years of age with an average of 48.7 years of age. The participants were matched by age, marital state and parenthood. After the intake interviews the participants were divided into an experimental and a control group, based on preference of starting date. The control group
6 received a similar training later on. Compilation of data was conducted previous to the program and immediately after. Research instruments The level of existential fulfilment was measured with the Existential Fulfillment Scale (EFS- 32), (Loonstra et al, 2007). Results The results showed that the participants showed no significant improvement in the area of existential fulfilment with as dimensions self-acceptation, self-actualisation and selftranscendention. Conclusion It has been concluded that the MBSR program has not been a useful addition to the level of existential fulfilment for these participants. This research concludes with a summary of a number of limitations within this experiment and gives recommendations for further exploration. Key words Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR); women; existential fulfillment; selfacceptation; self-actualisation; self-transcendence; self-alienation; meditation.
