DAAN MANNEKE BIOGRAFIE Daan Manneke werd geboren op 7 november 1939. Opleiding Hij begon zijn professionele muziekstudie aan het Brabants Conservatorium te Tilburg (1963-1967): orgel bij H. Houët en Louis Toebosch, compositie bij Jan van Dijk; nadien orgelstudie bij Kamiel D'Hooghe (Brussel) en compositie bij Ton de Leeuw (Amsterdam). Deze laatste studie werd afgerond met de 'prijs voor compositie'. Werkzaamheden Sinds 1972 is Daan Manneke verbonden aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium te Amsterdam. Eerst als docent improvisatie en analyse van de 20ste-eeuwse muziek, vervolgens ook als docent hoofdvak compositie. Daan Manneke is oprichter en dirigent van het kamerkoor Cappella Breda. Publikaties Naast diverse artikelen in verschillende muziektijdschriften publiceerde hij in 1978 het Werkboek voor improvisatie en groepscompositie (Amsterdam: Annie Bank, 1978). Houët and Louis Toebosch, composition with Jan van Dijk. Later he studied organ with Kamiel d'hooghe in Brussels and composition with Ton de Leeuw in Amsterdam. Activities From 1972 Daan Manneke teaches at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam: at first improvisation and analysis of 20th century music and later also composition. Daan Manneke is founder and conductor of the chamber choir Cappella Breda. Publications He has published several articles in music periodicals. Prizes In 1967 he won the Prize for Young Artists from the Province of Zeeland. Daan Manneke: biografische gegevens Daan Manneke werd geboren op 7 november in 1939 in Kruiningen (Zeeland). Een veelzeggende naam: Manneke is afgeleid van het Vlaamse mannekijn, 'paspop' (waar dan weer het 'Franse' woord mannequin van is afgeleid). Vlaamse voorouders, aan moederszijde is er nog een Spaans soldaat die in de Tachtigjarige oorlog in Zeeland bleef hangen. De afkomst resulterend in een onhollandse, ruime(re) blik, die, via Gezelle, reikt tot in het land van Verlaine en Rimbaud. Boerenzoon gebonden aan aarde en seizoenen. Een rechtzinnige vader, gesteld op orde, een meer spiritueel voelende moeder. Orthodox-protestants gezin, een radio is niet in huis, wel een bijbel. De psalmen zijn zijn dagelijkse kost. Al vanaf zijn prille jeugd is zingen de gewoonste zaak van de wereld. Zeeland is nog zonder hordes toeristen: een archipel van tegenstellingen en kleinschalige gemeenschappen. Daan Manneke kreeg zijn eerste muzieklessen van Adriaan Kousemaker, muziekdocent en - uitgever in Goes. Vanaf 1959 volgt een studie aan het Brabants Conservatorium in Tilburg bij Jan van Dijk (compositie) en Huub Houët en Louis Toebosch (orgel). Vervolgstudie bij Kamiel D'Hooghe in Brugge en Brussel. Leven en composities krijgen definitief vorm door de kennismaking, lessen (vanaf 1966) en vriendschap met Ton de Leeuw, in Nederland jarenlang de enige voorvechter en kenner van de niet-westerse muziek. Een inspiratiebron voor het leven. Het is Ton de Leeuw die hem in contact brengt met Olivier Messiaen, bij wie hij enige lessen volgt. Na jarenlang organist te zijn geweest wordt Daan Manneke in 1972 docent aan het Amsterdamse Sweelinck Conservatorium, vanaf 1986 docent compositie, een functie waarin hij inmiddels een groot aantal leerlingen heeft opgeleid. Daan Manneke is oprichter van het kamerkoor Cappella Breda (1976), een koor waarmee hij tal van - ook voor zijn denken over muziek - belangrijke programma's heeft gebracht en brengt: van Venetiaanse dubbelkorigheid tot Bruckner, Arvo Pärt en onbekende Renaissancecomponisten. Wezenlijk voor Daan Manneke's denken over muziek is zijn grote belangstelling voor improvisatie, de andere kant van de vaak organisch gegroeide, strenge vorm. Actie tegenover reflectie, inval tegenover uitgebalanceerde vorm. Als geen ander weet Manneke in cursussen een heel publiek tot improviseren (en wat is dat anders dan het overboord gooien van versleten denkpatronen) te brengen. In 1977 publiceerde hij Omgaan met muziek, een werkboek voor eigentijdse improvisatie. Een boek waaruit grote belangstelling blijkt voor de opleiding van jonge musici. Een belangstelling die ook blijkt uit Signalen van veraf en dichtbij, een serie van ruim veertig korte stukken voor kleine ensembles (1981). Inmiddels schreef Manneke een groot en veelzijdig oeuvre van meer dan 150 werken. Voor zijn vele verdiensten op muzikaal terrein ontving Daan Manneke in 1999 de cultuurprijs van de provincie Noord-Brabant.
