4 Gender differences in crying frequency and psychosocial problems in schoolgoing children aged 6 to 10 years Caroline Vangrieken Abstract Background Literature study shows that several investigations until now indicate the period between 9 years old and adolescence as the period in which the gender difference in crying frequency arises. The school-age population has been too little explored however, and therefore, it can not be excluded that the gender difference can be detected earlier. In this study, three correlations are investigated. The first is the difference in crying frequency between girls and boys. The second correlation is the connection between psychosocial problems and crying frequency. Finally, it shall be checked whether the coherence between psychosocial problems and crying frequency is stronger for girls than for boys. Aim The aim of this study is to examine a sex difference in crying frequency in children between 6 and 10 years old at school, as well as a possible coherence of psychosocial problems and crying. Participants, procedure, design After 41 teachers spread over 10 schools were personally approached, 37 teachers from 9 schools completed the questionnaires with regards to 687 pupils between 6 and 10 years old, 371 boys and 316 girls. Results The results showed that the crying frequency does not differ between girls and boys. A negative correlation was found between age and crying frequency. Furthermore, there is a positive correlation between psychosocial problems and crying frequency. However, this positive correlation is not stronger for girls than for boys. Conclusion It can be concluded that there is no gender
5 difference in crying frequency. As girls and boys grow older, they cry less at school. Both for girls and boys, the higher the score on psychosocial problems, the higher the score on crying frequency. Keywords: crying, psychosocial problems, gender differences, SDQ
