10 Curriculum Vitæ Esther Engelhard was born in Hoorn (the Netherlands) in 1984 and moved to East Africa (Kenya and Uganda) at age four where she attended a diverse range of local and international schools. In 1997 her family returned to the Netherlands where she attended the International School of Maastricht and Piter Jelles Montessori in Leeuwarden. After completing the first year of the courses Chemistry, and Biology and medical laboratory studies, she started her Bachelor in Medicine at the University of Groningen. During her medical training she developed an particular interest for the intersection of culture, human rights and health. To further delve into this topic, she pursued a variety of activities, including medical rotations in Mexico city, medical anthropology courses at the University of Amsterdam and an internship at a multidisciplinary treatment centre for refugees with trauma-related psychopathology in Diemen. After a short period of working as a medical doctor at a treatment centre for obesity, she started her PhD research at the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam. During the course of her PhD she obtained a master s degree in Epidemiology. After completing her dissertation she intends to continue her dedication to improving health equity and standards of care by pursuing a career in public health. 119

12 Dankwoord (Acknowledgements) I would like to start off by thanking the people who entrusted us with their data and took the time and effort to participate in the survey study. It is you who made this research project and its potential contribution to improving outpatient HIV care possible. Allereerst wil ik de mensen bedanken die ons toevertrouwd hebben met hun data en de tijd en moeite hebben genomen om mee te doen met de vragenlijst studie. U heeft dit onderzoeksproject, en de mogelijke bijdrage ervan aan de verbetering van de hiv-zorg, mogelijk gemaakt. Projectgroepleden Ik heb geluk gehad dat ik tijdens dit project omringd was door zoveel hiv-zorg en -onderzoek deskundigen. Jullie hebben de bijzondere tocht van de hiv-zorg/bestrijding in Nederland bijgewoond. Sterker nog, jullie hebben een belangrijk aandeel gehad in het uitzetten van haar koers. Suzanne, zoals bij alles wat je onderneemt was je toewijding binnen dit project ongekend. Je was altijd benaderbaar, en dankzij jouw ervaring en positie binnen de hiv-zorg was de landelijke deelname uitstekend. Bedankt voor deze unieke kans die ik kreeg om mijn wetenschappelijk en epidemiologische vaardigheden verder te ontwikkelen. Colette, ook jij maakte zonder uitzondering tijd vrij om mee te denken, advies te geven en te toveren met de indrukwekkende weelde aan data. Bedankt voor alle uren en moeite die je in het project hebt gestopt. Kees, jouw integriteit, optimisme, relativeringsvermogen en doelgerichtheid zijn goud waard en hebben veel betekend voor mij en het project. Heel veel dank voor alle inzichten, tijd en metroritjes. Peter, het was een eer om inbreng te krijgen van iemand met zo n (kleur)rijke persoonlijke en professionele achtergrond. Veel dank voor je zorgvuldigheid, eerlijkheid en persoonlijke betrokkenheid. Pythia, het is niet voor niets dat ik met regelmaat het advies kreeg vraag even hoe Pythia erover denkt. Overleg met jou resulteerde doorgaans, dankzij jouw schat aan wetenschappelijke ervaring en slimme geest, in opheldering, nieuwe invalshoeken en inspiratie. Frank, ik heb kunnen voortborduren op jouw mooie, uitvoerige werk. Bedankt voor het delen van je kwaliteit van hiv-zorg ervaringen en je medisch inhoudelijke kennis. Ook je oprechtheid en gevoel voor humor heb ik zeer gewaardeerd. Marlies! Hoe verfrissend waren mijn uitstapjes naar het groene Nijmegen. Ik had de indruk dat we dezelfde taal spraken en dat was een grote oppepper. Daarnaast hebben je persoonlijke belangstelling en raad veel voor mij betekend. 121

14 Vrienden, kennissen Miriam, Diana, Rinske, wat bof ik met zulke schatten van vriendinnen. Het koste nogal wat moeite soms om me uit mijn proefschrift en mijmeringen te trekken maar jullie zette door, bedankt daarvoor. Sita, Ingo, Annelies, Olga, alle lieve vriendenweekenders, mijn fantastische literaturfest maatjes, onze Bratwurst vrienden, bedankt voor jullie fijne gezelschap en prettige afleiding.
