4 A Detailed Clinical Model (DCM) is an information model of a discrete set of precise clinical knowledge which can be used in a variety of contexts (HL7) The purpose of Detailed Clinical Models are to provide precise semantic consistent data and terminology specification that are comparable and sharable between multiple care providers, health enterprises and standards-based Healthcare Information Technology (HIT). The DCM can be used for multiple objectives. Examples of such objectives are: clinical data collection and communication clinical care continuity of care (CCR/CCD) electronic exchange of information lifetime storage and retrieval linked to the context in which this took place quality measurement research management and policy making aggregation of data for other purposes A DCM is intended to be agnostic or neutral with respect to reference model and platform. For a DCM to be used in applications, it needs to be transformed into platform specific artefacts, for example HL7 templates or ISO or openehr archetypes. HL7 definition
