H a v e m a n c u l t u r a l d i v e r s i t y c u l t u r a l d i v e r s i t y in het atelier van Zhuan Hong Yi Zhuang Hong Yi is wat je noemt een universele kunstenaar die zich zowel door zijn geboorteland, het land waar hij is opgegroeid als door het land waar hij verblijft laat inspireren. In Zhuang s kunstwerken lees je naast zijn persoonlijke verhaal ook zijn dubieuze verhouding tot China en haar cultuur en geschiedenis. Verder komt vooral de uitzonderlijke gedrevenheid en zijn excellente vakmanschap naar voren. Echter ook de bijzondere manier van omgaan met materialen en de typische wijze waarop hij gebruik maakt van verzadigd papier en bestaande patronen, met name het Chinese rijstpapier. Hetzelfde geldt ook voor de eigenzinnige wijze waarop hij recentelijk keramiek toepast in zijn kunstwerken. Al de werken worden gekenmerkt door het zich verbeten eigen willen maken van materiaal en techniek hetgeen leidt tot een bijna ongelooflijk kunstenaarschap. Door zijn verblijf in het hoge Noorden, waar hij tot zijn grote geluk bij de onvergetelijke galeriehouder Albert Waalkens belandde, werd Nederland voor hem en later voor zijn gezin, het tweede vaderland. Hij toetste zijn mogelijkheden op alle mogelijke manieren in het Westen van Nederland en ontwikkelde zich in een bijna niet te vatten tempo tot een gewaardeerde kunstenaar. Inmiddels stelt hij tentoon in binnen- en buitenland waar hij ook weer zijn ervaringen opdoet en bezit hij sinds een aantal jaren een atelier in Beijing. Alles aan opgedane kennis en ervaringen wordt verwerkt in zijn kunst met een niet te stuiten enthousiasme op een geheel originele manier. Hij heeft dan ook internationaal een eigen onmiskenbaar handschrift veroverd, hetgeen hem tot een belangrijk en interessant kunstenaar maakt. In zijn beschouwing tracht Petran Kockelkoren in het kader van de Culturele Verscheidenheid het belang van kunst zoals die wordt gemaakt door Zhuang Hong Yi en de culturele context ervan te duiden. Zijn invalshoek is zoals wij als werkgroep Qua Art - Qua Science van Petran gewend zijn een filosofisch interessante die tegelijk weer vele vragen oproept. Hij legt met grote nadruk Zhuang s moderniteit bloot, onderkent zijn materieverkenningen, kundigheid en inzicht en constateert tenslotte bijna jaloers de ontspannen manier waarop in zijn kunstwerken al die aspecten worden verwerkt. Wij danken beiden voor de plezierige manier waarop zij meegewerkt hebben aan het tot stand komen van dit nieuwe hoofdstuk in de QAQS- geschiedenis. Zhuang Hong Yi is what you could call a universal artist who is inspired by the land of his birth, the land where he grew up, and by the land in which he now lives. In Zhuang s artworks you can read, aside his personal story, his suspicious attitude towards China, its culture and history. Furthermore, the most evident aspect of Zhuang s work are the artist s unique drive and excellent craftsmanship. These qualities are manifest in the artist s exceptional way of working with materials, as well as the idiosyncratic manner in which he makes use of saturated paper and existing patterns, particularly Chinese rice paper. The same is true of the distinctive way in which he has recently incorporated ceramics into his artworks. All the works are distinguished by a barely-contained mastery of material and technology, something that has led to an almost unbelievable artistry. As a result of his time in the high North of the Netherlands, where he was very fortunately was taken up by the unforgettable gallerist Albert Waalkens, the Netherlands became for him, and later for his family, a second homeland. He explored his possibilities in every thinkable way while in the West of the Netherlands managing to become an esteemed artist in an almost inconceivably short amount of time. Since then he has had numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and in other countries, has built up international experience and has a studio in Bejing once again. Zhuang processes all his gathered experience and knowledge in his artworks in a completely original way and with an unstoppable enthusiasm. Internationally, he has also developed an unmistakeable signature style, something that makes Hong Yi an important and interesting artist. In his essay, Petran Kockelkoren discusses the importance of art as it is made by Zhuang Hong Yi within the framework of cultural diversity, as well as considering its cultural context. His perspective is one that the Qua Art - Qua Science workgroup is used to: a philosophically-intriguing while at the same time raising many questions. He exposes Zhuang s modernity with great emphasis, recognises his material explorations, expertise and insight, and finally remarks, almost jealously, on the relaxed way in which Zhuang combines all of these aspects in his work. De technologische cultuur die een beeldtaal verspreidt die vast zit aan apparaten en programmatuur, dreigt oudere culturele lagen te verdringen of anders te absorberen in de vorm van herkenbare sjablonen. Techniekfilosofen van het eerste uur, zoals Ellul uit Frankrijk, Heidegger uit Duitsland en Mumford uit de V.S. vreesden dan ook dat de wereld er overal hetzelfde zou gaan uitzien, met McDonald, Nike, Sony enzovoort. In relatie tot cultuuruitingen spreekt men wel van een mondiale Disneyficatie. De gevolgen van de globalisering deden zich voor het eerst en het scherpst voelen in kunst en architectuur. Dat zijn dan ook bij uitstek de sociale domeinen waarin culturele identiteit wordt gevormd en behoed. In het geschetste krachtenveld staan voor kunstenaars verschillende wegen open waarlangs ze een tegenstem kunnen inbrengen, maar die wegen kennen telkens hun eigen gevaren. Kunstenaars van heel diverse culturele herkomst proberen in te tekenen op het internationale circuit van biënnales, kunstbeurzen en toonaangevende galeries in wereldsteden. Om in dit kunst-discours mee te kunnen tellen, maken veel kunstenaars een knieval voor een postmoderne vermenging en vermenigvuldiging van geijkte cultuuriconen. Daar tegenover kan men proberen het cultuureigene te benadrukken, maar dan rijst tevens de verdenking van reactionair folklorisme. Het is moeilijk om met behoud van eigen culturele esthetiek een artistiek boeiend bod te doen voor erkenning op internationale podia. Zhuang Hong Yi, een Chinese kunstenaar, is erin geslaagd om globalisering te verzoenen met de articulatie van een eigentijdse culturele identiteit die zijn herkomst niet verloochent. Aanvankelijk maakte hij indruk met grote pasteuze bloemschilderijen in Chinese stijl. Maar wat is eigenlijk Chinese stijl? Waarin onderscheidt die zich van Europese of Amerikaanse stijlen? Hier een poging dat duidelijk te maken. With the increase in mobility and the rapid spread of digital networks even the most far-flung places on earth cannot escape the reach of overlapping spheres of influence. The technological culture which spreads one aesthetic, an aesthetic that is bound up with machines and software, threatens to supersede older, cultural layers, or to distil them into recognisable clichés. The first thinkers to consider technology-- Ellul, in France, Heidegger in Germany and Mumford in the United States-- all worried that the world would look the same the world over (McDonald s, Nike, Sony, etc). There is a recognition of a possible global Disneyfication of cultural expressions. The consequences of globalisation were first and most sharply felt in art and architecture. These are also the most salient social spheres in which cultural identity is formed and preserved. In the spheres of influence sketched above there are many different paths open to artists, from which they can sound a contrary note, but the paths themselves also have inherent dangers. Artists from diverse cultural backgrounds attempt to participate on the international circuit of biennales, art fairs and prominent galleries in world-class cities. In order to be included in this art discourse, many artists make a concession to the postmodern mixing and multiplication of stock cultural iconography. In contrast, it is possible to emphasize the culturally-specific, but this tends to raise suspicions of reactionary folklorism. It is difficult to keep one s own cultural aesthetic and while producing an inspiring offering for recognition on international stages. Zhuang Hong Yi, a Chinese artist, has successfully reconciled globalisation with the articulation of a contemporary cultural identity, in a way that does not disavow his background. He begins by making an impression of a large, impasto flower painting in the Chinese style. But what actually is Chinese style? How does it differ from European or American styles? I will attempt to provide a clarification. Since the Renaissance, the Western aesthetic tradition has been characterised by a geometric construction of perspective (initiated by Brunelleschi in 1425 and described by Alberti in 1435 in De Pictura ), or by diverse forms of resistance against it (from Van Gogh to Picasso and Mondriaan). Western painting offers a window onto reality. Within that window the world is hierarchically laid out using formal rules. The Chinese aesthetic, in contrast, is based on totally different principles. Within classic Chinese aesthetics, the world is not formally understood as being under control, but rather manifests itself as a profusion of impressions that invite us to read them as a pattern. With a comparable attitude one can see faces in clouds, or divine human fate with sticks dropped at random. The Chinese approach is characterised by reading stones, veined stone surfaces that evoke landscapes. Similarly, there is also the centuries-old tradition of philosopher s stones, gnarled, twisted stones with holes in them, which have been handed down through the centuries, and which have inspired much poetic commentary on the forms and patterns that have been recognised in them. These found, rather than constructed, readings of patterns were meant to be strictly followed, and they formed the basis for the earliest guiding principles of thought regarding Chinese art. Zhuang Hong Yi s flower paintings are Chinese, through and through: they present us with mysterious patterns. But this artist is no neo traditionalist. His canvases are modern in the sense that they are formalist in their colour composition. 6 Cultural Diversity Cultural Diversity 7

4 P e t r a n K o c k e l k o r e n P e t r a n K o c k e l k o r e n De westerse traditie van esthetiek kenmerkt zich sinds de Renaissance door een geometrisch geconstrueerd perspectief (geinitieerd door Brunelleschi in 1425 en beschreven in De Pictura door Alberti in 1435) of door verschillende vormen van verzet daartegen (van Van Gogh tot Picasso en Mondriaan). Het westerse schilderij biedt een venster op de werkelijkheid. Binnen dat venster wordt de wereld door formele regels in het gelid gezet. De Chinese esthetiek echter, stoelt op totaal andere principes. In de klassieke Chinese esthetiek wordt de wereld niet formeel bedwongen maar doet ze zich veeleer voor als een overdaad aan indrukken die uitnodigen om ze te lezen als een patroon. Met een dergelijke instelling kan men gezichten zien in wolken of het menselijk lot gespiegeld vinden in willekeurig gevallen stokjes. Kenmerkend voor de Chinese benadering zijn de zogenaamde leesstenen, dat zijn geaderde steenoppervlakken die voor de kijker een landschap evoceren. Er bestaat ook een eeuwenoude traditie van geleerdenstenen (philosophers stones), dat zijn kronkelig gevormde stenen met gaten erin die men elkaar doorgeeft en die zelfs door de eeuwen heen allerlei geleerde poëtische commentaren over vorm en patroonherkenning rond zich verzamelen. Niet geconstrueerde maar aangetroffen en tot lezing aangeboden patronen waarnaar men zich in handel en wandel moet voegen, vormen de leidraad van de oer-chinese kunstopvatting. De bloemschilderijen van Zhuang Hong Yi zijn door en door Chinees, ze reiken raadselachtige patronen aan voor onze blik. Maar deze kunstenaar is geen neotraditionalist. Zijn doeken zijn modern in die zin dat ze formalistisch zijn in hun kleurschakeringen en dat ze bovendien en dat lijkt bijna in tegenspraak met het formalistische aspect tegelijkertijd materieverkenningen zijn, zowel wat betreft de textuur en zeggingskracht van het papier als het pasteuze van de opgebrachte verf. Ook die aandacht voor de verzadigde materialiteit van het werk is trouwens een Chinese bijdrage aan de westerse moderniteit: formele patronen staan in de Chinese opvatting niet achter of boven de werkelijkheid, zoals denkers en kunstenaars van Plato tot Mondriaan en Kandinsky meenden, maar ze roeren zich van binnenuit in de materiële expressie. Uitgerust met de geschetste inzichten en kundigheden, kan deze kunstenaar zich tenslotte als geen ander op een nieuwe en ontspannen manier tot techniek verhouden. Techniek wordt niet langer gevreesd als de grote culturele gelijkmaker, maar met behulp van techniek kan men ook op zoek gaan naar verborgen patronen in de werkelijkheid. In zijn recente werken experimenteert Zhuang Hong Yi met keramische technieken om zijn bloempatronen zowel in kleurschakeringen als in tactiliteit tot uitdrukking te brengen. Ontwikkeling van culturele identiteit en globaliserend kunstenaarschap gaan niet ten koste van elkaar, maar komen bij hem op gelukkige wijze samen. The attention for the saturated materiality of the work is a distinctly Chinese contribution to Western modernity: in Chinese thought formal patterns stand for something which is neither behind nor above reality, as thinkers and artists from Plato to Mondriaan and Kandinsky believed, but for elements that stir themselves from inside to outside through material expression. Equipped with the outlined insights and expertises, this artist is able, as no other, to relate to technique in a new and easy manner. Technology is no longer feared as a great cultural equalizer-- with the help of technology one can seek out hidden patterns in reality. In his recent works Zhuang Hong Yi experiments with ceramic techniques in order to better express both the colour palette and tactility of his work. Development of a cultural identity and globalised art practice are not lost to one another, they are fortunately brought together in this artist.
