3 Met nieuw elan Het was een hectisch jaar voor Aluchemie. Maar ook een jaar met nieuwe mogelijkheden. Toen ik juni 2007 bij Aluchemie binnenkwam, zag ik een organisatie die toe was aan nieuw elan. Samen met de Aluchemisten ben ik aan de slag gegaan. Dit leidde tot ons verandertraject SLIM: standaardiseren, leren, informeren en motiveren. Met nieuwe energie de toekomst van het bedrijf vormgeven, dat was nodig. En die mogelijkheden hebben we zichtbaar gemaakt op het gebied van organisatie, verantwoordelijkheden, kwaliteit, leveringen en kostenbeheersing. Ieders kennis, inzet en betrokkenheid is essentieel om onze doelstellingen te realiseren. Om tevreden klanten te houden, die weer weten dat Aluchemie tot de wereldtop behoort. Het is goed om te zien hoe de motivatie van medewerkers in korte tijd is gegroeid. Ook de samenwerking met de vakbonden en Ondernemingsraad is de afgelopen jaren sterk verbeterd. Leuk dat Aluchemie daarvoor begin 2008 de sociale innovatietrofee (AWVN) kreeg uitgereikt. De toekomst Het Masterplan dat in 2007 is ontwikkeld, zal Aluchemie totaal op z n kop zetten. In positieve zin wel te verstaan. Een plan richting 2020, met vervanging en uitbreiding van oude installaties door nieuwbouw. Dat is méér dan slechts een facelift voor een veertigjarig bedrijf. Tot 2012 wordt al 195 miljoen euro geïnvesteerd. Een nieuwe generatie technologieën doet haar intrede, zoals onze rookgasreinigingsinstallatie die uniek is in de wereld. Om die reden is onze milieuvergunning voor de komende jaren weer verlengd. Ons doel is veilig en verantwoord werken aan toenemende productie en hogere kwaliteit, met een sterke vermindering van de milieudruk. Vanzelfsprekend gaan wij Aluchemisten de komende jaren aantonen dat elke stap van ons Masterplan voor vernieuwing en uitbreiding een prima investering is. Uit Visie 2013 spreekt ons doel de beste en meest productieve anodenproducent ter wereld te worden. Nieuwe eigenaar Rio Tinto Met de overname van Alcan door Rio Tinto, kregen we op 25 oktober 2007 ook een nieuwe eigenaar. Aluchemie is nu onderdeel van de businessgroep Primary Metals in de divisie Rio Tinto Alcan. De culturen van beide bedrijven lijken op elkaar, met de aandacht voor veilig en gezond werken hoog in het vaandel. Door een sterke speler te zijn in alle onderdelen van de keten van grondstofwinning tot aluminiumproductie, heeft Rio Tinto Alcan de kracht om zich wereldwijd verder te ontwikkelen. Op weg naar het miljoen Rio Tinto Alcan overweegt zijn meest prestigieuze project onder te brengen bij Aluchemie. Het gaat om de AP50, het grootste formaat anode ter wereld van 75 cm hoog. Onze engineers kijken nu naar de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe vormmachine die deze reuzenanode kan maken. Want wij zouden dit graag in het eerste kwartaal van 2009 al realiseren. Maar ondertussen staan we ook met beide benen op de grond. We weten dat we voor de uitdaging staan in korte tijd op veel fronten te verbeteren: onderhoud, kwaliteit en verantwoord werken. De basisregels zijn duidelijk vastgelegd in onze projecten Back to Basics voor de Massafabriek en de Ovens, net zoals de verantwoordelijkheden. We willen groeien en dat kunnen we ook. We gaan op weg naar het miljoen, door tussen 2010 en 2020 elk jaar een nieuwe oven neer te zetten van honderd kiloton. Maar vooral door kwaliteit te leveren die ons tot wereldspeler maakt! When I arrived at Aluchemie in June 2007, I saw an organisation that was in need of some new zest. Together with the Aluchemists I set to work. This resulted in our new management of change campaign SLIM: standardise, learn, inform and motivate. Working on the future of the company with new energy, that was what was needed. And we have revealed these new opportunities in the area of organisation, responsibilities, quality, deliveries and cost control. The knowledge, effort and commitment of everyone is essential to achieve our goals. To retain satisfied customers, who will once again know that Aluchemie is among the world s leaders. It is good to see how the motivation among our employees has improved in such a short time. Cooperation with the trade unions and the Works Council has also improved considerably during the past few years. And it was a great moment when, at the start of 2008, Aluchemie received the social innovation trophy (AWVN) in recognition of all its efforts. The future The Masterplan that was developed in 2007 is a turning point in Aluchemie s history. In a positive sense, of course. A plan to take us through to 2020, with the replacement and expansion of old systems with new ones. That is more than just a facelift for a forty-year-old company. We are already investing more than 195 million euro until A new generation of technologies will be introduced, such as our fume treatment plant which is unique in the world. For this reason, our environmental permit has been renewed once again for the coming years. Our aim is to work safely and responsibly on increasing the volume and quality of our production, while at the same time reducing our impact on the environment drastically. Naturally, us Aluchemists will be demonstrating during the coming years that each step in our Masterplan for renewal and expansion is an excellent investment. Our Vision 2013 expresses our aim to be the best and most productive anode producer in the world. New owner Rio Tinto With the acquisition of Alcan by Rio Tinto, we also had a new owner on 25 October Aluchemie is now part of the Primary Metals business group in the Rio Tinto Alcan division. The cultures of both companies are very similar, with priority given to safe and healthy working practices. By being a strong player in all parts of the chain, from mineral extraction to aluminium production, Rio Tinto Alcan has the strength and resources to develop further around the world. Towards a million Rio Tinto Alcan is considering giving its most prestigious project to Aluchemie. This is the production of the AP50, at 75 cm high the largest anode in the world. Our engineers are now working on developing a new moulding machine that can produce this giant anode, because we want to get this project up and running as early as the first quarter of But in the meantime we keep our feet firmly on the ground. We know that we have the challenge to improve things in many areas in a short period of time: maintenance, quality and responsible working practices. The basic rules are clearly laid down in our Back to Basics project for the Paste Plant and the Furnaces, as are the responsibilities. We want to grow, and can certainly do so. We are heading towards a million, by installing a new hundred-ton furnace every year between 2010 and But above all by delivering top quality that will make us a truly global player! 4 Van koolstofanode tot consumentenproduct Aluchemie produceert in Rotterdam- Botlek koolstofanoden in verschillende maten en specificaties. Deze grote blokken koolstof hebben de positieve eigenschap dat er veilig een hoge elektrische stroom doorheen kan worden geleid. En dat is noodzakelijk voor de productie van aluminium. De basis voor aluminium wordt gewonnen uit de erts van het mineraal bauxiet. Als aluminiumoxide (aluinaarde) wordt het bij een temperatuur van C in smelterijen verwerkt tot aluminium. Door de toevoer van elektriciteit ondergaan het aluminiumoxide en de anoden in het smeltbad een chemische reactie. Het aluminium komt hierdoor vrij en stroomt als vloeibaar metaal in opvangbakken. Het wordt gevormd, gekoeld en verder verwerkt. Van het aluminiumoxide zelf blijven alleen slakken over. Ook het anodemateriaal wordt bij dit proces voor het grootste deel verbruikt. Productieproces: malen, vormen en bakken De belangrijkste grondstoffen voor de productie van anoden zijn petroleumcokes en steenkoolteerpek. Dat zijn eigenlijk restproducten uit andere processen, die in de koolstofanoden van Aluchemie een nuttige toepassing vinden. Petroleumcokes zijn namelijk een bijproduct van de aardoliedestillatie. Steenkoolteerpek wordt gemaakt uit teer dat vrijkomt in de cokesfabrieken van de staalindustrie. Ook de anoderesten die de aluminiumproducenten na hun processen naar Aluchemie kunnen terugsturen, worden weer verwerkt als grondstof. In de eerste fase van het productieproces worden de petroleumcokes en anoderesten gebroken en waar nodig gedroogd. Dan worden ze gesorteerd, gemalen en verwarmd. Daarna wordt een nauwkeurig bepaalde hoeveelheid pek als bindmiddel toegevoegd en wordt het geheel tot een massa gekneed. In de mallen van de vormmachines krijgt de anode de gewenste vorm. De anoden die de vormmachine verlaten, de zogenaamde groene anoden, gaan vervolgens in een bakoven. Het bakproces dat volgt, neemt twee weken in beslag. Gedurende deze periode worden de anoden gebakken bij een temperatuur van rond de C. Tijdens dit proces verdwijnen de vluchtige bestanddelen uit het pek en wordt het bindmiddel omgezet in vaste koolstof. Voor een zeer gering deel komen deze vluchtige bestanddelen terecht in de gassen die gedurende het bakken vrijkomen. De gassen uit de oven worden voor de emissie in de lucht, gereinigd in de rookgasreinigers. Na de eindverwerking (reiniging, controle en verpakking) zijn de anoden gereed voor verzending. Naast Nederland zijn Noorwegen, IJsland en Duitsland de landen waar aluminiumproducenten de anoden van Aluchemie gebruiken. ALUCHEMIE RIO TINTO ALCAN 4 Carbon anodes: essential for Aluminium Aluchemie produces carbon anodes in various sizes and specifications in the Rotterdam area. Large blocks of carbon are used because a high electrical current can pass through them safely. This is necessary for the production of aluminium. The base component for aluminium is alumina which is extracted from bauxite. Alumina ore smelts (the process of separating a metal from its ore) at 950 C. With the addition of an electric current the aluminium oxide and the carbon anodes undergo a chemical reaction. The resulting pure aluminium flows as a liquid metal into containers leaving behind slag. The anode material is mostly consumed in the process and the aluminium is formed, cooled and processed further. Production process: crushing, forming and baking The most important resources for anode production are petroleum cokes and coal tar pitch. Both of these are residual products from other industrial processes. Petroleum cokes are a by-product of natural gas distillation and coal tar pitch is a by-product of the steel industry. The anode butts can be returned to Aluchemie and reprocessed into raw material. During the first phase of the process, the petroleum cokes and anode butts are broken and, if necessary, dried. They are sorted, crushed and heated. Thereafter, a carefully determined amount of pitch is added as a binding agent before paste is carefully mixed. Mechanically, the anode will be given the desired shape. The resulting so-called green anodes are then placed in a baking furnace. The subsequent baking process takes two weeks, during which the temperature is raised to approximately 1150 C and at the end of the cycle cooled down to approximately 200 C. During this process the volatile components evaporate from the pitch as gases which are filtered by the fume treatment plant before being released into the air. After final processing (cleaning, checking and packaging) the finished anodes are ready for shipping to our customers.

5 Wereldwijd stijgende vraag De vraag naar aluminium neemt wereldwijd sterk toe, en dus ook de vraag naar grondstoffen en hulpstoffen voor het aluminiumproces. De huidige anodenproductie van Aluchemie is ton per jaar, maar ook een verdubbeling daarvan zou direct aan aluminiumproducenten verkocht kunnen worden. Want aluminium is licht én sterk, slijtvast en bestand tegen zuren. Bovendien zijn de aluminiumproducten aan het eind van hun levensfase eenvoudig weer te gebruiken voor nieuwe aluminiumproducten. Omdat het goed vormbaar is, wordt aluminium bij uitstek toegepast als constructiemateriaal in gebouwen, windmolens, vliegtuigen en ruimtevaart. Ook in alledaagse toepassingen komen we aluminium tegen: van aluminiumfolie tot frisdrankblikje, van kabels tot keukengerei en kampeeruitrusting en van meubilair tot auto s en jachten. 5 Increasing demand worldwide Demand for aluminium is increasing sharply around the world and So is the demand for ore and secondary materials for the aluminium production process. Aluchemie s current anode production is 475,000 tonnes per annum, but even double this amount could be sold direct to aluminium producers each year. This is because aluminium is light but strong, durable and acid-resistant. What s more, at the end of their useful life aluminium products can be easily recycled into new products. Since it is easy to mould, aluminium is an excellent construction material for use in buildings, windmills, aircraft and spacecraft. We also come across aluminium in all kinds of day-to-day uses, from aluminium foil to drink cans, from cables to kitchen utensils and camping equipment and from furniture to cars and yachts.

6 Aluchemie, onderdeel van Rio Tinto Alcan Aluminium & Chemie Rotterdam B.V., zoals de volledige naam van de vestiging luidt, maakt sinds 25 oktober 2007 deel uit van Rio Tinto Alcan. Op die datum versterkte multinational Rio Tinto ( medewerkers) zijn positie door het grotere Alcan ( medewerkers) over te nemen. De Rio Tinto Productgroep is nu met ruim medewerkers in vijf divisies wereldwijd de nummer 1 in zowel de winning van bauxiet (grondstof voor aluminium) als de productie van aluminium. Het beleid is erop gericht de synergie tussen beide bedrijven te benutten om ook op het gebied van alumina de koploper te worden. De sterke positie van het bedrijf komt voort uit de strategie om in alle essentiële onderdelen van de keten actief te zijn. Van mijnbouweigenaar voor de grondstofwinning tot productie van halffabrikaten voor ondermeer de eigen smelterijen van metalen. De aandacht van Rio Tinto voor mijnbouw en bewerking van mineralen is breed. In het portfolio bevinden zich aluminium, koper, diamanten, kolen, uranium, goud, ijzererts en industriële mineralen als borax, titaniumdioxide, zout en talk. niumsmelterijen in Noord-Europa. Het transport gaat voor 96% per schip; slechts 4% wordt over de weg vervoerd. Vertrouwde basis Veel Aluchemisten werken al lang bij het bedrijf en dat is bijzonder. Het gemiddelde dienstverband is 16,53 jaar. En 47% van de medewerkers is zelfs al langer dan 20 jaar bij Aluchemie in dienst. Dat er sinds oktober 2007 een nieuwe eigenaar is, verandert niets aan de dagelijkse taakstelling van kwaliteit bieden en veilig werken bij vormen en bakken van anoden. Wat wel van belang is, is dat ook de nieuwe eigenaar de voorgenomen investeringen ondersteunt. Het betekent dat de medewerkers een toekomst van vernieuwing en uitbreiding van Aluchemie voor zich weten. Daarvan deel kunnen uitmaken, zal voor veel mensen een extra uitdaging zijn. Na jaren van bezuinigingen heeft het bedrijf dit nodig, daar is iedereen het over eens. Primary Metals De productie van koolstofanoden bij Aluchemie is onderdeel van de businessgroep Primary Metals in de divisie Rio Tinto Alcan. ALUCHEMIE RIO TINTO ALCAN 6 Aluchemie produceert al sinds 1966 in de Botlek in een volcontinu proces. Met de productie van ton koolstofanoden is het bedrijf een van de grootste anodeproducenten ter wereld. The company s strong position is the result of its strategy to be active in all essential parts of the chain. From a mining company for extracting the ore to the producer of semifinished products for its own metal smelters. Rio Tinto is involved in a wide range of mineral mining and processing activities. Its portfolio includes aluminium, copper, diamonds, coal, uranium, gold, iron ore, and industrial metals such as borax, titanium dioxide, salt and talc. Primary Metals The production of carbon anodes at Aluchemie is part of the Primary Metals business group in the Rio Tinto Alcan division. Aluchemie has been producing on a 24/7 basis in the Botlek since With an annual production of 475,000 tonnes of carbon anodes, the company is one of the largest anode producers in the world. Its products are sent to aluminium smelters in northern Europe. 96% of the anodes are transported by ship and 4% by road. Long time employments Many Aluchemists have been working for the company for many years, and that is something quite special. The average length of service is years, and 47% of the employees have been with Aluchemie for more than 20 years. The fact that there has been a new owner since October 2007 has not changed a thing in the day-to-day tasks of providing quality and working safely to form and fire anodes. It is important, though, for the new owner to support the planned investments. This means that employees can look forward to a future of renewal and expansion at Aluchemie. The ability to participate in this process will be an extra challenge for many people. After years of cost savings this is exactly what the company needs. That is something everyone agrees on.

7 Veertig jaar PAR Nico Driessen en Joop Bennis, respectievelijk 38 en 30 jaar in dienst bij Aluchemie, zijn als penningmeester en voorzitter de gezichten van de personeelsvereniging. Tachtig procent van de medewerkers is lid en dat zegt wel wat. Hoogtepunt was en is het Sinterklaasfeest bij Aluchemie, met prachtige cadeaus en lenige Pieten. Gezelligheid onder elkaar, met collega s die je goed en minder goed kent, dat is de opzet van de personeelsvereniging. De klaverjasavonden met een bedrijvencompetitie waar soms wel 320 man aan meededen, krijgen in deze tijd concurrentie van fi etstochten op de Veluwe of Oosterhout, bowling en andere sportieve prestaties. In 2007 vierde de PAR haar veertigjarig bestaan met een wokavond in Hoogvliet, muzikaal opgeluisterd door de band Traveller, met daarin collega Mark Zwart. Ook nieuwe medewerkers herkennen tijdens hun introductie direct de betrokkenheid van Nico en Joop: die personeelsvereniging is toch eigenlijk te leuk om los te laten. Gelukkig zijn er ook activiteiten voor oud-medewerkers, dus na Nico s pensionering in 2009 zullen we hem nog zeker wel eens bij Aluchemie zien. Op telde Aluchemie 383 medewerkers. Eighty per cent of employees are members, and that is remarkable. The main event was and is the Sinterklaas party at Aluchemie, with wonderful presents and active Pieten. The joy of getting together with colleagues you know or don t know so well, that is the idea of the personnel association. The traditional Klaverjas evenings, with a competition between companies that sometimes attracted as many as 320 participants, now have competition from cycle tours in the Veluwe or Oosterhout, bowling and other sports activities. In 2007 the Personnel Association celebrated its 40th anniversary with a diner in Hoogvliet, with music provided by the band Traveller, from our colleague Mark Zwart. New employees recognise the involvement of Nico and Joop during their introduction too. The personnel association is in fact just too much fun to give up. Fortunately there are also activities for former employees, so even after Nico retires in 2009 we will certainly still be seeing him at Aluchemie from time to time. 8 Aandacht voor de omgeving Naast de productie is het voornaamste doel van Aluchemie geen overlast veroorzaken met onze bedrijfsactiviteiten. Een goede buurman zijn voor de omgeving, is namelijk de basis voor de license to operate. In dit maatschappelijk jaarverslag geven we een beeld van onze inspanningen voor veilig en verantwoord werken. In 2007 kon Aluchemie vieren dat er 1000 dagen was gewerkt zonder verzuimongeval. Dat is een mooi resultaat. Aluchemie blijft veel aandacht besteden aan veilig en gezond werken, door nog meer te kijken naar voorvallen die een ongeval zouden kunnen veroorzaken. Waar wonen wij? Deze rookgasreinigers worden in versneld tempo vervangen door nieuwe installaties met de modernste technieken. In 2009 en 2010 kunnen we deze volledig in gebruik nemen, waarna geurklachten met zeker 95% zullen verminderen. Donaties Ook in 2007 konden organisaties in de omgeving een beroep doen op Aluchemie voor ondersteuning van hun activiteiten. Zo hebben we voor ruim 7000 euro bijdragen geleverd aan de kleurboekenactie Kind en ziekenhuis, aan een boekje over veiligheid op straat voor kinderen van scholen in Rozenburg en Rotterdam, aan het Sophia Kinderziekenhuis en aan Kika, de stichting Kinderen Kankervrij. Dit laatste project kwam voort uit een bijdrage van medewerkers van de afdeling Haven, die hun budget voor een teambuildingevenement beschikbaar stelden voor Kika. Dit mooie gebaar werd ondersteund door een bijdrage van Aluchemie. Dankzij de medewerkers die hun kerstcadeau schonken aan een goed doel, hebben we namens hen ook zo n 1300 euro kunnen overmaken aan de Kankerbestrijding, Hartstichting, het Aidsfonds, Wereld Natuur Fonds en Unicef. Being a good neighbour for the area is in fact fundamental for our licence to operate. This annual environmental report describes our efforts to achieve safe and sound working practices. In 2007 Aluchemie was proud to report that 1000 days had been worked without an accident leading to absence. That is an excellent result. Aluchemie continues to devote much attention to safe and healthy working practices by investigating even more closely any incidents that could have caused an accident. One aspect, however, that we were not satisfied about in 2007 was the increase in the number of odour complaints compared to On page 16 we explain that the complaints are due to process failures in a number of outdated fume treatment plants. We are speeding up the replacement of these plants with new systems fitted with the most modern technology. We will be able to put these into full operation in 2009 and 2010, after which the number of odour complaints should certainly be reduced by 95%. Donations As in previous years, organisations in the region were able to count on Aluchemie s support for their activities in To mention just a few examples: we contributed more than 7000 euro to the Kind en ziekenhuis [Child and Hospital] colouring book campaign, a road safety booklet for children at schools in Rozenburg and Rotterdam, the Sophia Children s Hospital and Kika, the Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij [Children Cancer-Free Foundation]. This latter project was due to a contribution by our harbour colleagues, who donated their budget for a team-building event to Kika. This fine gesture was supported by a contribution from Aluchemie. Thanks to some employees who donated their Christmas gift to a good cause we were also able to make a donation of some 1300 euro on behalf of them to the Dutch Cancer Foundation, the Heart Foundation, the Aids Fund, the World Wildlife Fund and UNICEF.

Met gerichte vragen aan de directie en informatie naar de achterban is duidelijkheid te verschaffen. In de roerige jaren die achter Aluchemie liggen, was dat een flinke klus. Met het nieuwe beleid en alle innovaties die het moederbedrijf voor Aluchemie in petto heeft, stijgt het vertrouwen van mensen in het bedrijf waar velen al zo lang aan verbonden zijn. De aandacht voor de waardering van medewerkers vertaalde zich ook in de OR-agenda voor Leeftijden Gemiddelde leeftijd 45,5 6 t/m 24 jaar t/m 29 jaar t/m 34 jaar t/m 39 jaar t/m 44 jaar t/m 49 jaar t/m 54 jaar t/m 59 jaar jr en ouder De enquête over het personeelsbeoordelingssysteem (IPCM, Individual Performance Career Management) had een flinke respons van 65%; er is ingestemd met een proefjaar. Daarnaast was aandacht voor leeftijdsbewust personeelsbeleid, als antwoord op toenemende vergrijzing en verloop. De arbeidsomstandigheden voor veilig en gezond werken blijven hoog op de agenda staan. De VGWM-commissie houdt zich bezig met de risico-inventarisatie uit 2007 en het plan van aanpak dat daaruit voorkomt. Want de blootstelling van mensen aan ongezonde stoffen moet vermeden worden: met technische maatregelen, good housekeeping, preventief onderhoud, persoonlijke beschermingsmiddelen en goed toezicht op de uitvoering. Niet alleen de goede salariëring en de zekerheid voor de toekomst binden mensen aan Aluchemie, maar vooral ook dat je je prettig voelt bij het werk en de sfeer. 10 Omslagpunt 2007: Masterplan Toekomst Aluchemie Dé grote uitdaging in 2007 was de ontwikkeling van een Masterplan voor de toekomst van Aluchemie. Het bracht meteen meer dan voldoende uitdaging voor de komende 10, 15 jaar mee: goedkeuring en uitvoering van de opeenvolgende stappen van het Masterplan dat Aluchemie helemaal op z n kop gaat zetten. En dat in de goede zin van het woord. Niet een plan voor uitsluitend vervanging, maar voor uitbreiding, vernieuwing en verbetering. De eerste fase van Aluchemie stamt namelijk uit Het Masterplan gaat uit van vernieuwing op alle fronten: nieuwe installaties met stateof-the-art technieken, hogere efficiency en milieuprestatie. Het Masterplan heeft naast een bedrijfseconomische en technische ook een sociale component: vertrouwen in de toekomst van het bedrijf. terrein nieuw te bouwen, gaat behoorlijk ver. Bovendien luidt het devies: tijdens de verbouwing gaat de verkoop gewoon door. Oftewel: volop blijven produceren en ondertussen vernieuwen en uitbreiden. En ook de bestaande installaties vernieuwen en verbeteren. Meer produceren, betere kwaliteit, dus hogere efficiency. Wat we leerden van de revisie van oven 4 in 2007, was dat de oven wel efficiënter werkt, maar nog steeds een basisontwerp van 1966 heeft. Terwijl je meer efficiëntie uit een oven kunt halen als je die groter maakt en anders inricht. Het nieuwe idee is nu om als een soort dambord voor de nieuwe ovens een plek leeg te maken en een andere plek te bezetten. Het gaat om nieuwe ovens met 60% meer capaciteit per stuk. Dit vraagt om hoge investeringen, maar de totaalsom van investeringen en extra opbrengst overtuigt. Het moederbedrijf eist van ons wel een uitgebreide procedure met heel wat beslissingsstappen. Die moeten we elke keer weer zien te verdienen. Teamleider Engineering Arent Tissingh kent Aluchemie sinds zes jaar, toen hij bezig was met o.a. de bouw van oven 7 en rookgasreiniger 6. Sinds eind 2007 is hij volop Aluchemist en verantwoordelijk voor ontwikkeling van het Masterplan. Na anderhalve dag intensieve brainstorm met twee process engineers, ontstond het beeld dat er veel meer uit Aluchemie te halen was. ALUCHEMIE RIO TINTO ALCAN 10 Niet vervangen maar vernieuwen We presenteerden de directie een visie op de toekomst. Geen vervanging, maar vernieuwing en uitbreiding. De eerste lay-out van dat idee sprak mensen aan, dus ga je onderzoeken of het een haalbare kaart is. Want het voorstel om ovens te slopen en elders op het Turning point 2007: Masterplan for the future of Aluchemie The main challenge in 2007 was the development of a Masterplan for the future of Aluchemie. It immediately generated more than enough challenges for the next 10 to 15 years: approval and implementation of successive steps of the master plan that will completely turn Aluchemie upside down in a positive way. Not only a plan for replacement, but one for expansion, renewal and improvement. The first phase ofaluchemie goes right back to The Masterplan tackles renewal on all fronts: new systems with state-of-the-art technology, higher efficiency and environmental performance. The Master plan has a economical and technological, but also a social component: confidence in the future of the company. Manager Engineering Arent Tissingh has known Aluchemie for six years, during which time he has been involved in various projects such as the construction of furnace 7 and fume treatment plant 6. Since the end of 2007 he is an employee of Aluchemie with the responsibility for developing the Masterplan. After a day and a half of intensive brainstorming with two process engineers, the outcome was that the Aluchemie plant has much more possibilities. Not replacement, but renewal We presented the management team a vision of the future. Not simply replacement, but renewal and expansion. The first draft of that idea was generally agreed upon so you go on examining whether this option is feasible. Because the proposal to demolish furnaces and build new ones elsewhere on the site is pretty drastic. What s more, the motto is: business as usual during the building work. To put it another way: maintain full production levels while at the same time renewing and expanding. And also renew and improve the existing systems. More production, better quality, and so greater efficiency. What we learnt from the overhaul of furnace 4 in 2007 was that although the furnace operates more efficiently, its basic design is still from Whereas you can achieve more efficiency from a furnace if you enlarge it and set it up differently. The new idea now is to clear space in front of the new furnaces, a kind of chequerboard idea, and to make use of a different place. These will be new furnaces, each one with 60% more capacity. This demands considerable investment, but the total package of investment and extra return is convincing. However, the parent company does require us to put forward a detailed procedure setting out a whole series of decision steps.

11 Voortschrijdend technisch inzicht Andere inzichten in receptuur, grootte en procescondities voor anoden leiden ook tot deelprojecten in de gigantische vernieuwingsoperatie die Aluchemie in gang heeft gezet. Daarnaast is het een verplichting vanuit de Wet Milieubeheer om bij vervanging van installaties de best beschikbare techniek toe te passen. De nieuwe RTO-techniek bij rookgasreiniger 5 is inmiddels al weer verder ontwikkeld en wordt toegepast in RGR (rookgasreiniger) 6 en 7. Wel is het zo dat RGR 7 vanwege milieuverplichtingen zo snel op RGR 6 volgt, dat de evaluatie van rookgasreiniger 6 niet kan worden meegenomen. De volgende stap voor toepassing van nieuwe inzichten komt dan weer met de bouw van een nieuwe oven en bijbehorende rookgasreiniger tussen 2009 en In 2011 start dan weer de bouw van de tweede extra oven. Beide ovens bieden aanzienlijke capaciteitsuitbreiding. Om die goed te kunnen voeden, wordt ook de massafabriek waar de anoden worden gevormd, uitgebreid en verbeterd. Ook komt daar een nieuwe rookgasreiniger, zodat de emissies naar de lucht minimaal zullen zijn. projecten. Belangrijk is dan ook het meetbaar maken van de doelen: het Masterplan is pas afgerond als er daadwerkelijk een hogere productie wordt gemeten met een aanzienlijke daling van de emissies. Iedereen is nodig De enorme vernieuwingsoperatie die Aluchemie voor ogen staat, vraagt om betrokkenheid van alle mensen op het terrein. Want de productieomgeving moet blijven draaien, moet onderhouden worden, terwijl mensen nu in de ontwerpfase meedenken over de specificaties voor de toekomst en getraind worden in nieuwe methodes. Kortom: de nieuwe toekomst van Aluchemie gaat niet onopgemerkt voorbij! In totaal heeft de projectgroep Masterplan zo n deelprojecten ontwikkeld die Aluchemie technisch veranderen en verbeteren met bestaande en nieuwe installaties. Twintig eigen engineers en twintig externen moeten dat in goede banen gaan leiden. De grote uitdaging voor 2008 is het proces van conceptontwerp tot strategische beslissing met goedkeuring door het moederbedrijf van alle gedefinieerde 11 Advanced technological insight Other insights into the specification, size and process conditions for anodes also give rise to subprojects in the huge renewal operation that Aluchemie has embarked on. The Master plan project group has developed a total of 50 to 60 subprojects that will modify and improve the technology at Aluchemie with existing and new systems. Twenty of our own engineers and twenty external engineers will be responsible for ensuring that the entire process runs smoothly. The biggest challenge for 2008 is the process from concept design to strategic decision, with the parent company s approval of all the defined projects. We therefore must make all our objectives verifiable: the master plan is only complete if genuinely higher production is measured with a significant reduction in emissions. Everyone is needed This huge renewal operation we are embarking on at Aluchemie demands the commitment of everyone on the site. This is because the production environment must continue to function and be maintained, while even during the design phase people will already be thinking about future specifications, and must be trained in the new methods. In short: the new future of Aluchemie will be recognized by many people!

12 Klanttevredenheid, dat is kwaliteit Hvordan går det? Wie geht s? Hvernig gengur? De tevredenheid van de klant moet ons uitgangspunt zijn, is de stellige overtuiging van Teamleider Customer Services Erwin Smits. Na flinke dips in de afgelopen jaren hebben we in 2007 weer resultaat gezien in een dalend aantal kwaliteitsklachten. Vooral dusting, het te snel uit elkaar vallen van anoden in het proces van aluminiumproductie, moeten we zien te voorkomen. We hebben daarvoor het roer radicaal omgegooid: de klant centraal gesteld en de vakkennis van de operators vergroot. We bezoeken regelmatig de klant om meer inzicht te krijgen in hun productieproces en de relatie met de specificaties die wij aanleveren. Zo n 66% van onze productie gaat naar Noorwegen. We doen er goed aan de taal van de klant te spreken. Niet alleen technisch, maar ook in de communicatie. Mijn collega is IJslander en studeerde ook in Noorwegen, dus spreekt beide talen. Ikzelf leer nu ook de Noorse taal erbij. En we volgen in Noorwegen een cursus om het productieproces van de klant te verkennen en nog beter te begrijpen wat daar nodig is. eigen mensen wat hun aandeel is in de kwaliteit die we afleveren. In het spanningsveld van techniek en mensen ontstaat kwaliteit: goed onderhoud voor storingsvrije installaties, bediend door mensen die doen wat ze moeten doen. Strategie Supply Chain 1. Gerespecteerde leverancier zijn, dus aandacht voor HSE en continu verbeteren van proces en product; 4. Alert blijven op concurrentie in een markt waar de kostprijs continu onder druk staat: direct hoge kwaliteit leveren, zonder afkeur. Hoe gaat het? Korte communicatielijnen, dat is zowel voor de klant als voor ons als producent prettig. Aluchemie ontwikkelt voor elke klant een individuele website. De reacties en opmerkingen bespreken wij elke week met de productiemensen. Aan de directie rapporteren we elke twee weken. ALUCHEMIE RIO TINTO ALCAN 12 Customer satisfaction, that s quality A satisfied customer; that must be our objective, is the firm conviction of manager Customer Services Erwin Smits. After some sharp dips during the past few years, in 2007 we have begun to see results again in the decrease in number of quality complaints. Dusting in particular, where anodes break down in the aluminium production process too fast, is something we must aim to prevent. To do this we have made some radical changes: the customer is central, the operators expertise has been increased. We visit the client regularly to obtain a better understanding of their production process and how this relates to the specifications we supply. Some 60% of our production goes to Norway. We would do well to speak the customer s language. Not only on technical matters, but also in communication. My colleague is Icelandic and also studied in Norway, so he speaks both languages. I myself am learning Norwegian too, and we are Onze uitdaging voor 2008? Verder bouwen aan de supply chain. 13 Back to Basics Verhogen van de productie en van de kwaliteit. Daarvoor startte Aluchemie in 2007 een groot programma: Back to Basics. Het is net zo eenvoudig als het klinkt. Dus terug naar het basisrecept met beproefde en vastgestelde instellingen. Door de productiedruk waren in de loop der jaren allerlei menselijke handigheidjes in het productieproces geslopen die niet voor alle onderdelen even effectief waren. Daarnaast zorgden bezuinigingen op onderhoud en nieuwe technische mogelijkheden voor extra processtoringen. Dat tij is met het nieuwe management in 2007 met succes gekeerd. Aluchemie beschikt nog steeds over een kern van mensen met de nodige expertise in onderhouds- en productieprocessen. Tijdens intensieve sessies met vertegenwoordigers uit de productie- en onderhoudsgroepen zijn heldere richtlijnen voor productie en installaties afgesproken. Met deze nieuwe waarheid wil Aluchemie constant hoge kwaliteit leveren. Want dat is precies wat de afnemer in de aluminiumindustrie nodig heeft in deze gespannen markt. Ook is in 2007 een procesbeheerssysteem ontwikkeld om dusting met kwaliteitsklachten bij klanten te voorkomen. Drie productspecialisten, waaronder een senior process engineer, versterken de aandacht voor kwaliteit. Kijkje in de keuken Hoge kwaliteit leveren is voor 50% afhankelijk van materiaal en voor 50% van de mens die daarmee omgaat. Een goede machinist scoort beter op de kwaliteit van de anoden in de oven. Want je moet secuur zijn. Maar in een oven met slechte muren of achterstallig onderhoud zal de kwaliteit minder zijn. Vergelijk het met bakken in de oven thuis: met de juiste voorbereidingen heb je niet veel nodig om het goed te doen. Maar in de rommel en met slechte ingrediënten valt er niets lekkers van te maken. Zo heeft de kwaliteit van de gebakken anoden direct met de grondlaag te maken. Een vakman als kraanmachinist pakt de onderste blokken snel en soepel mooi en strak in. Als de grondlaag niet goed is, wordt minstens de helft van de onderste laag afkeur door deformaties aan de zijkant van de anoden. Zo is er een direct kwaliteitsverband tussen het werk van kraanmachinisten en van procesoperators. Goede, open communicatie ondersteunt het gewenste eindresultaat. Niet alleen door de supervisors, maar door alle Aluchemisten. 13 Back to Basics Increase the production and quality. To achieve this, Aluchemie started up a major programme: Back to Basics in It is as simple as it sounds. Back to the basic formula, with well-tested set-ups. Because of production pressure, over the years all kinds of human tricks had invaded the production process. Tricks that were not effective for all elements of this process. With the arrival of the new management we have now managed to turn the tide in Aluchemie still has a group of key people with the necessary expertise in maintenance and production processes. Clear guidelines for production and systems have been agreed during intensive sessions with representatives from the production and maintenance groups. With this new reality, Aluchemie aims to deliver high quality consistently. Because this is precisely what the customer in the aluminium industry needs in this tight market. A process management system was also developed in 2007 which aims to prevent dusting with quality complaints from customers. Three product specialists, including a senior process engineer, reinforce the attention given to quality. A look behind the scenes Delivering high quality depends for 50% on the material, and 50% on the people handling it. A good operator produces better quality anodes in the furnace. Because you have to be absolutely meticulous. But a furnace with bad walls or overdue maintenance will produce poorer quality. Compare it to home baking using your own oven: with proper preparation it doesn t take much to do it properly. But you can t make anything delicious in messy surroundings and with poor ingredients. In the same way, the quality of the calcined anodes is directly related to the ground layer. A skilled crane operator will pack the bottom blocks quickly and smoothly, and put them in position neatly and tightly. If the ground layer is not good, at least half of the anodes calcined on the bottom of the furance will be rejected because of deformations along the sides of the anodes. So there is a direct quality link between the work of the crane operators and that of the process operators. Good, open communication helps to achieve the desired result. Not only by the supervisors, but by all employees working at Aluchemists.

14 Back to Benchmark ALUCHEMIE RIO TINTO ALCAN 14 In de jaren 90 was Aluchemie wereldleider in de hoogwaardige productie van anoden. Die positie terugwinnen, dat is het doel voor de komende jaren. Tal van projecten en trainingen zijn daarvoor opgezet, zoals de Kaizen. Kaizen Het Japanse woord kaizen verwijst naar een aanpak in productiviteitsverbetering. Het doel is een proces of systeem uit elkaar te halen en opnieuw in elkaar zetten op een betere manier. Aluchemie werkt graag met kaizens. In een korte intensieve periode van 1-5 dagen is er resultaat. Een vereiste is wel dat er goed voorwerk is verricht door alle betrokken afdelingen, zodat de juiste feiten op tafel kunnen komen. Dan worden allerlei ideeën voor een oplossing gegenereerd, waarbij de Back to Benchmark During the 1990s Aluchemie was the world leader in anode production. The target for the coming years is to regain this position, for which numerous projects and training programmes have been set up, like Kaizen. Kaizen The Japanese word kaizen refers to an approach in productivity improvement. The idea is to take a process or system apart, and then rebuild it in a better way. Aluchemie is very keen on kaizens. Results can be achieved in a short, intensive period of 1 to 5 days. However, success depends on good preparations made by departments concerned: the correct facts on the table and all relevant people present. Then all kinds of ideas for a solution will be generated, with the group deciding which idea is the most feasible. After presenting the proposal to the management or a specialist, such as a safety expert, it will be clear whether or not the proposal progresses to the implementation phase. groep beslist welk idee het beste uitvoerbaar is. Early warning system The required production quality at the customer is embedded in the basic rules for the production process. We follow a weekly rhythm and know what parameters produce a risk of problems at the customer. Such a parameter, for example, is sodium. This element (salt) is in the raw materials and the anode butts that customers send back to Aluchemie for processing. Sodium has an effect on dusting, but a customer does not want an anode that dusts in the aluminium bath. The resistance of the substance created causes process malfunctions such as deformations, temperature problems or short-circuiting, resulting in production loss. So it is best to use a raw material containing as little sodium as possible. The customer must also supply anode butts that are as clean as possible. If checks on the incoming material show this is not the case, as low dosages as possible of this sodium-rich material should be used. Other parameters besides sodium are the mould temperature, height and specific gravity of the material. Early warning system De vereiste productkwaliteit bij de klant zit verankerd in de basisregels voor het productieproces. We hanteren een weekritme en weten welke parameters risico op problemen bij de klant laten zien. Zo n parameter is bijvoorbeeld natrium. Dit element (zout) zit in grondstoffen en in de resten die Aluchemie voor verwerking terugkrijgt van de klant. Natrium heeft een effect op dusting, maar een klant wil geen anode die stoft in het aluminiumbad. Door de weerstand van het stof ontstaan daar processtoringen zoals deformaties, temperatuurproblemen of kortsluiting. Dan valt de anode eerder uit elkaar en ontstaat productieverlies. Dus het beste is grondstof met zo weinig mogelijk natrium te gebruiken. Daarbij is het van belang dat de klant zijn anoderesten ook zo schoon mogelijk aanlevert. Als de ingangscontrole op het materiaal aantoont dat dit niet het geval is, moet er zo weinig mogelijk van dit natriumhoudend materiaal gedoseerd worden. Andere parameters naast natrium zijn in de massafabriek de vormtemperatuur, hoogte en soortelijk gewicht van het materiaal. En bij de ovens zijn gastemperatuur, onderdruk en omzettijdverlies de kritische factoren. Het blijft een uitdaging om een steeds robuustere anode te ontwikkelen voor de klant. And with the furnaces, gas temperature, underpressure and conversion time loss are the critical factors. It remains a constant challenge to develop an ever more robust anode for our customers.

15 Beleid en vergunningen Verantwoord naar mens en omgeving Het beleid van Aluchemie en de strategische partners stelt de veiligheid en gezondheid van mensen en omgeving voorop in alle managementen bedrijfsprocessen. Gecertificeerde managementsystemen voor gezondheid, veiligheid, milieu en kwaliteit vormen de basis daarvan. Zo beschikt Aluchemie over een gecertificeerd OHSAS arbomanagementsysteem. Dit systeem vormt samen met het gecertificeerde ISO milieuzorgsysteem en het gecertificeerde ISO 9000 kwaliteitszorgsysteem, het integrale Aluchemie KAM-systeem. In 2006 is de audit voor hercertificering van OHSAS positief verlopen. In 2007 is dat ook gebeurd voor ISO 9001 en in 2008 staat ISO voor het milieuzorgsysteem weer op het auditprogramma. Milieuwetgeving Industriële productiebedrijven zoals Aluchemie moeten voor de emissies die door de productie ontstaan, voldoen aan de Wet milieubeheer en de Wet verontreiniging oppervlaktewateren. Hierop baseert de overheid de verstrekte milieuvergunningen: de provincie voor de Wet milieubeheer en Rijkswaterstaat voor de Wet verontreiniging oppervlaktewateren. De overheid ziet toe op naleving van de vergunningen. Met de nieuwe RTO-techniek voor rookgasreiniger 5, die in 2003 in gebruik is genomen, erkende Aluchemie de noodzaak tot vermindering van emissies naar de lucht en van geurhinder. Daarvoor blijkt het noodzakelijk de verouderde rookgasreinigers te vervangen en deze opnieuw te bouwen volgens s werelds best beschikbare technieken. Het gaat hier om hoge investeringen, waar veel mensen van Aluchemie intensief aan werken, naast de dagelijkse aandacht voor productie die verantwoord is voor mens en omgeving. Na de investeringsbeslissing van het moederbedrijf is in 2005 direct gestart met het ontwerp van de volgende nieuwe rookgasreiniger nummer 6 die in 2009 in gebruik zal worden genomen. Daarin wordt de inmiddels verder vernieuwde RTO-techniek toegepast. Het Masterplan dat Aluchemie in 2007 ontwikkelde, gaat uit van vernieuwing op alle fronten: nieuwe installaties met state-of-the-art technieken, hogere efficiency en milieuprestatie. In 2007 is oven 4 gereviseerd en verlengd en is gestart met de engineering van rookgasreiniger 7, die vanaf 2009 gebouwd zal worden. Meer over het Masterplan staat op pagina Nieuwe vergunning Gedeputeerde Staten van Zuid-Holland hebben op 22 december 2006 een nieuwe beschikking in het kader van de Wet milieubeheer afgegeven. De MOB (mobilisation for the environment) heeft op 24 januari 2007 bij de Raad van State beroep aangetekend tegen de beschikking. Voornaamste punt was de discussie over het al dan niet toepassen van de best beschikbare technieken bij de rookgasreinigers 1 t/m 4. Op 21 december 2007 heeft de Raad van State uitspraak gedaan. Als gevolg van de uitspraak ontving Aluchemie van het college van Gedeputeerde Staten een vergunning in het kader van de Wet milieubeheer. Daarin is een vergunde waarde opgenomen voor de PAK-emissies van rookgasreiniger 5 en de nog te bouwen rookgasreinigers 6 en 7. Verder zijn met Gedeputeerde Staten afspraken gemaakt over de termijnen waarbinnen rookgasreiniger 6 en 7 moeten worden geplaatst. 15 Policy and permits Responsible towards people and the environment The policy of Aluchemie and its parent company Rio Tinto Alcan gives top priority to the safety and health of people and the environment in all management and business processes. This is based on certified management systems for health, safety, the environment and quality. For example, Aluchemie possesses a certified OHSAS health and safety management system, which together with the certified ISO environmental care system and the certified ISO 9000 quality care system forms the integrated HSE & Q system. During 2006 the audit for the recertification of OHSAS was successfully completed. This was also done for ISO 9001 in 2007, and ISO for the environmental care system is once again on the audit programme for Environmental legislation Industrial production companies such as Aluchemie must comply with the Environmental Management Act and the Pollution of Surface Waters Act with regard to emissions generated by production. The government bases the environmental permits it issues on these Acts: the province for the Environmental Management Act and the Directorate of Public Works and Water Management for the Pollution of Surface Waters Act. The government oversees compliance with the permits. With the new RTO technology for fume treatment plant 5 that started operating in 2003, Aluchemie recognised the need to reduce emissions into the air as well as odour complaints. This makes it necessary to replace the outdated fume treatment plants and rebuild them using the very best available technology in the world. This involves huge investments from many people at Aluchemie, next to their day to day attention for safe production.. Once the strategic partners had decided to make the investment, a start was made in 2005 on designing the next fume treatment plant, number 6, which will be put into operation in 2009 using the RTO technology that has undergone further innovation in the meantime. The Masterplan that Aluchemie developed in 2007 is based on innovation on all fronts: new systems with state-of-the-art technology, higher efficiency and environmental performance. Furnace 4 was rebuilt in 2007 and a start has been made with the engineering for fume treatment plant 7, which will be built from 2009 onwards. Read more about the Masterplan on pages New license The Government of the Provincce of Zuid-Holland issued a new agreement on 22 December 2006 under the Environmental Management Act. The MOB (mobilisation for the environment) lodged an appeal against the decision with the Council of State on 24 January The main issue was the discussion as to whether or not to use the best available technology for fume treatment plant 1 to 4. On 21 December 2007 the Council of State delivered its verdict. As a result, Aluchemie got a permit from the Provincial Executive under the Environmental Management Act, containing a permitted value for PAH emissions of fume treatment plant 5, 6 and 7 which are yet to be built. In addition, agreements were made with the Provincial Executive on the time frame for the installation of fume treatment plant 6 and 7.

16 Emissies naar de lucht Duurzaamheid De strategische partners van Aluchemie hanteren duurzaamheid als vanzelfsprekend uitgangspunt van de onderneming. Het is de stellige overtuiging van het bedrijf dat alleen met duurzaam ondernemen werkelijk een meerwaarde kan worden gecreëerd. Dat is goed voor zowel de medewerkers als de omgeving van de bedrijven, en ook voor de mensen die als aandeelhouder willen investeren in een gezonde toekomst voor het bedrijf. Geur Tot onze spijt steeg het aantal klachten over geurhinder van 48 in 2006 naar 67 in Aluchemie doet grondig onderzoek naar alle klachten over geurhinder. Er blijkt een relatie tussen de geurklachten en processtoringen waarbij de DA-filters van de rookgasreinigers 1 tot en met 4 niet gebruikt kunnen worden. De afgassen worden dan omgeleid en niet volledig gereinigd, wat bij deze verouderde techniek tot geurhinder kan leiden. Verder is geurhinder afhankelijk van de klimatologische omstandigheden en de windrichting. Halverwege 2009 is rookgasreiniger 6 klaar die de rookgasreiniger voor oven 1, 2 en 3 zal vervangen. Al een jaar later volgt de nieuwe rookgasreiniger 7. Door de nieuwe techniek en grotere capaciteit zullen processtoringen in de rookgasreiniging zich vrijwel niet meer voordoen. ALUCHEMIE RIO TINTO ALCAN 16 Na rookgasreiniger 5 uit 2003 worden de komende jaren in hoog tempo alle rookgasreinigers nieuw gebouwd naar de laatste stand van de techniek. Emissions into the air Sustainability For Rio Tinto, the parent company of Aluchemie, sustainability is a natural and fundamental principle. It is absolutely convinced that added value can only be genuinely created if it pursues sustainable business practices. This is good for the companies employees and the environment, as well as for those who wish to invest as share-holders in a healthy future for the company. Odour We regret that the number of odour complaints increased from 48 in 2006 to 67 in Aluchemie carries out thorough investigation to the causes of all odour complaints. There is evidently a relationship between such complaints and process failures, during which the DA filters of fume treatment plant 1 to 4 cannot be used. The fumes are then diverted and not fully treated, which may lead to odour complaints. In addition, odour complaints depend on climatologically conditions and wind directions. In the meantime, Aluchemie has switched to using the very latest fume treatment technology; regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO). Thanks to this new technology and greater capacity, process failures in the fume treatment process have been virtually eliminated. Following fume treatment plant 5 in 2003, during the coming years all the fume treatment plants will be replaced according to the latest technology. In mid-2009 fume treatment plant 6 will be completed and will treat the fumes of furnace 1, 2 and 3. Within a year fume treatment plant 7 will follow. Emissions of odours from fumes, just as the other emissions into the air, will then be reduced by at least 95%. The diagram shows a clear relationship between the number of odour complaints and the number of process failures (in bypass) of the fume treatment plants. The variation in numbers is caused by the changing process conditions in combination with measurement inaccuracies of 43% of the PAH measurements. No better measurement method has yet been developed anywhere in the world. After the new fume treatment plants 6 (2009) and 7 (2010) have been put into operation, full combustion of the fumes will take place and these emissions are expected to be reduced by 99% to an absolute minimum.

De hoeveelheid CO 2 wordt berekend uit het aantal tonnen groene anoden, gecalcineerde anoden en het percentage pek. Verzuring SO 2 (zwaveldioxide) De emissie van SO 2 vindt alleen bij de bakovens plaats en ontstaat door de verbranding van de vrijkomende pekdampen en afdekcokes die zwavel bevatten. Het niveau van deze emissie wordt bepaald door het zwavelgehalte in de pek en afdekcokes, die als grondstoffen binnenkomen. In de productspecificatie is hiervoor een maximum opgenomen. Geringe verschillen in het zwavelgehalte leiden tot verschillende emissieniveaus. De emissie in kg per ton anoden schommelt de laatste jaren tussen circa 0,6 en 0,9 kg per ton gecalcineerde anoden. In 2007 was de emissie 0,7 kg per ton gecalcineerde anoden. De hoeveelheid SO 2 is doorgerekend vanuit de meetgegevens van de maandelijkse emissiemetingen, uitgevoerd in het laboratorium van Aluchemie, het debiet (de doorstroming per tijdseenheid) en de bezettingsgraad van de ovens. NO X (stikstofoxide) Aluchemie is verplicht tot deelname aan de NO X emissiehandel en levert volgens een door de NEa vastgesteld protocol gegevens aan over de NO X emissie. In 2007 is deze meetmethode net als elk jaar geverifieerd door de Nederlandse Emissieautoriteit (NEa). De totale NO X emissie voor het jaar 2007 was 169 ton, 9% hoger dan in De schommelingen tussen 2005, 2006 en 2007 worden voornamelijk veroorzaakt door het meetmoment. De emissiemeting vindt onder representatieve omstandigheden plaats door een gecertificeerd extern bureau. Verspreiding lucht Koolwaterstoffen De jaarvracht koolwaterstoffen is bepaald aan de hand van metingen, uitgevoerd door een gecertificeerd extern bureau met propaan (C3H8) als kalibratiestof. De tonnen gemeten propaan zijn omgerekend naar tonnen koolwaterstof. In 2007 bedroeg de jaarvracht 560 ton koolwaterstoffen. Dit is lager dan voorgaande jaren en komt doordat in 2007 oven 4 tijdelijk uit bedrijf is genomen voor vervanging. 17 Increased Greenhouse Effect CO 2 (Carbon Dioxide) The 2007 figure for CO 2 emissions: 246,000 tons (218,000 tons in 2006) has been calculated in accordance with the method set out by the International Aluminium Institute 1. The CO 2 figure is calculated using the amounts of green anodes, calcined anodes and baked pitch. Acidification SO 2 (Sulphur Dioxide) Sulphur Dioxide emissions only occur in furnaces and are caused by burning the released pitch gas and cokes which contains sulphur. The level of SO 2 emissions is dictated by the level of sulphur in the pitch and cokes. Product specifications have been set limiting the maximum allowable sulphur content. Small variations in sulphur lead to different emission levels. The emission in kg per ton of anodes has been between 0.6 and 0.9 kg/ton in past years. The emission figure is determined using details from monthly emission measurements by the Aluchemie laboratory and the measurement of the flow per amount of time and occupancy level of the furnaces. In 2007, SO 2 emission per ton of calcined anode produced was 0.7 kg, reduced from 0.71kg in NO X (Nitrogen Oxide) Aluchemie must participate in the new Nitrogen Oxide emission trading system and provides details of NO x emissions in line with the NEa protocol. Total NO x emission for 2007 was 169 kg. The 9% difference on 2006 figures is mainly due to measurement variables. The measurement is undertaken by a certified external bureau. Dispersal - Air Hydro Carbons Figures for the yearly amount of hydrocarbons are measured by a certified external bureau using propane (C3H8) as a control. This means that the amount of propane measured is calculated into a total hydrocarbon figure. The amount transported in 2007 was 560 tons. We make a distinction between condensed tar components (these are 0,10 filtered off during measurement) and volatile tar components (which are absorbed afterwards by a silica gel 0,05 cartridge) 2. The total emission figure is calculated using monthly measurements by Aluchemie s laboratory and the 0, furnace debit level Past emission figures are shown 2007in the graphs. Emission in 2006 for condensed tar components was 7,3 tons (8,0 in 2006) and volatile tar component was 162, 3 tons (162.8 in 2006). Teerbestanddelen Hoewel de overheid geen opgave vraagt van de emissie aan teerbestanddelen, vormt de meting van deze componenten een belangrijk onderdeel van de emissiemetingen bij Aluchemie. We onderscheiden gecondenseerde teerdelen, die tijdens de meting met een filter worden afgescheiden en vluchtige teerdelen die aan silicagel in een nageschakeld patroon worden geabsorbeerd (methode VDI 3467 febr. 1982). De hoeveelheid is berekend op basis van maandelijkse emissiemetingen door het laboratorium van Aluchemie, het debiet en de bezettingsgraad van de ovens. In nevenstaande grafieken is de ontwikkeling van deze emissies weergegeven. De emissie van gecondenseerd teer was in ,3 ton (in ,0 ton). De emissie van vluchtige teerbestanddelen was in ,3 ton, in ,8 ton. PAK s, fluorantheen en benzo(a)pyreen De teercomponenten die vrijkomen bij bakovens, de massafabriek en de vormerij, bevatten onder andere PAK s, fluorantheen en benzo(a)pyreen. Aluchemie laat een gecertificeerd extern bureau jaarlijks PAK-metingen uitvoeren. Ook in 2007 is dit gebeurd, tijdens de daarvoor georganiseerde meetperioden. De variatie van de hoeveelheden worden veroorzaakt door de wisselende procesomstandigheden in combinatie met de meetonnauwkeurigheid van 43% van de PAK-metingen. Daar is wereldwijd nog geen betere methode voor. Na de ingebruikname van de nieuwe rookgasreinigers 6 (2009) en 7 (2010) vindt er volledige verbranding van de afgassen plaats en zullen deze emissies naar verwachting met 99% tot een minimum zijn gereduceerd. Fluoriden De hoeveelheid fluoride is berekend op basis van maandelijkse emissiemetingen door het laboratorium van Aluchemie, het debiet (de doorstroming per tijdseenheid) en de bezettingsgraad van de ovens. De emissie bedroeg 3230 kg inclusief de emissies van 1850 kg die tijdens processtoringen zijn gemeten. De emissie bedroeg in ,01 kg/ton geproduceerde anode. De fluoride-emissie is in 2007 sterk beïnvloed door onderhoudsproblemen bij rookgasreiniger 1. Na technische verbeteringen aan de rookgasreiniger verwacht Aluchemie in 2008 een daling van de fluoride-emissie. Emissie PAK s, fluorantheen en benzo(a)pyreen Jaarvracht in kg benzo(a)pyreen ,2 50,65 fluorantheen Totaal Pak s PAHs, Fluoranthene and Benzo(a)pyrene Tar components released at the furnaces, Paste plant and Molding plant contain PAHs, fluoranthene and benzo(a) pyrene amongst others. On Aluchemie s request a certified external consultant conducted PAH measurements for 2007 emissions. Variation is largely accounted for by changes in processing conditions in combination with the impreciseness of 43% PAH measurements. Fluorides The quantity is calculated based on monthly emission measurements by the Aluchemie laboratory, the flow rate (flow per amount of time) and the capacity utilisation of the furnaces. Emissions were 3230 kg including the emissions of 1850 kg that were measured during process failures. Emissions in 2007 were 0.01 kg per tonne of produced anode. Fluoride emissions in 2007 were strongly influenced by maintenance problems with fume treatment plant 1. After technical improvements were made to the fume treatment plant, Aluchemie expects fluoride emissions to be reduced in Using method VDI 3467 Feb

19 Koolmonoxide Ook de emissie van koolmonoxide (CO) heeft Aluchemie in twee meetperioden door een extern gecertificeerd bureau laten vaststellen. De opgegeven emissie is berekend uit de gemiddelde concentratie, het gemiddelde jaardebiet (de doorstroming per tijdseenheid) en de bezettingsgraad van de ovens. De uitstoot van koolmonoxide fluctueert met de fase waarin het proces zich bevindt en met de kwaliteit van het stookproces. In 2005 was de COemissie ton, in ton en in ton. Stof De hoeveelheid fijn stof aan de installaties is berekend op basis van maandelijkse emissiemetingen door het laboratorium van Aluchemie en het debiet, de doorstroming per tijdseenheid. Bij de berekening van de stofemissie van de ovens is rekening gehouden met de bezettingsgraad. De emissie van fijn stof op basis van de uitgevoerde emissiemetingen bedroeg 18.0 ton in 2007 versus 18.2 ton in 2006 en 29.7 ton in Ook aan de haven vinden stofemissies plaats, met name tijdens overslag van petroleumcokes en tijdens de verlading van koolstofproducten. De aangevoerde petroleumcokes zijn behandeld met een stofbindend middel om stuiven te beperken. De berekening van de stofemissie tijdens belading is gebaseerd op 0,01% verstuiving, waarvan 10% grof stof. Dit geeft een emissie van ca. 32,7 ton fijn stof en ca. 3,6 ton grof stof. De totale hoeveelheid fijn stof bedroeg in ,4 ton ( ,1 ton, ,4 ton). Er is een project gestart om de hoeveelheid stof die vrijkomt bij laden en lossen doorlopend te verminderen. De reductie wordt namelijk mede beïnvloed door procesomstandigheden, het meetmoment en meetonnauwkeurigheden. kg/ton kg/t 0,20 0,15 0,10 0,05 0,00 0,15 0,10 0,05 0, Emissie per ton gecalcineerde anode fijn stof Hierboven is de aan de installaties gemeten stofemissie weergegeven. 19 Carbon monoxide Aluchemie also had an externally certified consultant measure carbon monoxide (CO) emissions during two measurement periods. The emissions recorded were calculated from the average concentration, the average annual flow rate (flow per amount of time) and the capacity utilisation of the furnace. Carbon monoxide emissions fluctuate depending on the phase of the process and the quality of the stoking process. CO emissions were 2,694 tonnes in 2005, 2,088 tonnes in 2006 and 1,707 tonnes in Dusts The amount of dust emission is calculated by Aluchemie s laboratory using monthly emission figures. Furthermore, the occupancy level of each furnace is taken into account before a final figure is given. Total emission for 2007 was 18.0 tons (18.2 in 2006 and 29.7 in 2005). Particle emission occurs in the port during the transit of petroleum cokes and (un)loading of carbon products. Petroleum cokes are treated with a binding agent to limit dispersal. The calculation of emission during (un) loading is based on a figure of 0.01% of dispersal, 10% of which is coarse dust. This gives a 2007 emission figure of approximately 32.7 tons fine dust and 3.6 tons coarse dust. The total fine dust emission for 2007 is 54.4 ton (52.1 tons in 2006 and 65.4 in 2005). The reduction is partly due to process circumstances, the moment of measurement and imprecise measurements. A project will decrease dust emission during loading and unloading.
