3 Voorwoord Beste excursieleden. Hierbij de gids voor de New York excursie van 2007 van de Instituut Bouwkunde van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Het is een gids met achtergrond informatie van de stad, nuttige informatie betreffende reis en verblijf. Zoals eerder vermeld is de excursie richting New York een stuk goedkoper geworden dankzij Jeroen Kaldenbach van Kaldenbach Recruitment. De sponsoring houdt in; het vervoer van en naar het vliegveld maar ook het museumbezoek. Verschillende projecten worden toegelicht en daarnaast bevat het de inhoud van het programma. In korte tijd is er zoveel mogelijk adequate informatie verzameld en verwerkt in dit hopelijk handzame boekje. Het was werkelijk te veel werk om elk project uitgebreid te documenteren. Bij druk kunnen nog eventuele wijzigingen in het programma zijn aangebracht, welke niet meer meegenomen zijn in de gids. Hiervan wordt u uiteraard tijdig op de hoogte gebracht. Wij hopen dat deze handleiding tijdens de excursie goed bruikbaar is en inspirerend genoeg om als basis te dienen voor u om New York te exploreren. Neem daarom ook hiervoor het programma van de dag te voren door. Namens de excursiecommissie heel veel plezier in New York. 7 Algemene Informatie TIJD New York hanteert de Eastern Standerd time en ligt 5 uur achter op Greenwich Mean Time. Wij zitten in GMT+1. Het scheelt dus 6 uur met Amsterdam. REIS Amerika uit is geen probleem maar bij het inchecken op schiphol wil de douane beambte alles van je weten. Hij is vooral erg geïnteresseerd in je bagage. Verwacht dus vragen als: is die bagage van jou? Heb jij die bagage zelf ingepakt? Wat is het doel van je reis? Ook heeft de douane het recht om ongevraagd je bagage te openen. Zorg ervoor dat ze dit makkelijk kunnen. (Ze zijn niet verantwoordelijk voor eventuele schade aan koffersloten etc.) Hoe stom het ook klinkt, het is aan te raden voor de heren om glad geschoren bij de incheckbalie op schiphol te verschijnen. Neem een pen mee in je handbagage. GELD Let op! Alle bankbiljetten lijken op elkaar, zorg dat je weet wat je geeft want zodra je het afgeeft stoppen ze het meteen weg. Er zijn biljetten van $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 en $100 en ze zijn allemaal groen en even groot. Als je daar wilt pinnen, controleer dan of je een wereldpas hebt. En zorg dat je weet hoe je die kan blokkeren als je die kwijt raakt. Dit geldt natuurlijk voor je mobiele telefoon en je eventuele creditcard. LET OP! Let op bij het kopen van apparatuur of het geschikt is voor ons lichtnet. Bij ons 220V/230V & 50Hz, in Amerika 110V/120V & 60Hz. Ook DVD s zijn niet geschikt voor de Europese spelers. DVD s zijn regio gebonden.

Als je elders gaat ontbijten zorg dan dat je op het verzameltijdstip terug bent. CITYPASS Alle deelnemers krijgen een zogenaamde Citypass ( Hierin zitten de entreekaartjes voor de diverse musea volgens programma. Bewaar deze goed hij is 63 dollar waard. METRO Het gemakkelijkste vervoermiddel in Manhattan is de metro. Redelijk veilig, maar draag geen opzichtige juwelen en houd waardevolle spullen uit zicht. Reis je s nachts met de metro neem dan de middelste wagon, waar de conducteur zit. Alle deelnemers krijgen een METROPAS ter waarde van $24. Ongelimiteerd met de metro en de locale bus tot middernacht. 7 dagen, die ingaan als je hem voor het eerst gebruikt.

Kennedy airport, NYC Lokale tijd Naar Hotel Carter Kennismaking met de stad Avond vrij Bijzonderheden Als de hele groep door de DOUANE is, verzamelen in de hal van het vliegveld en bij elkaar blijven (Niet naar buiten om te roken en binnen mag je niet roken). Dick Vonk belt de bus die ons naar hotel Carter brengt. Aangekomen bij het Hotel: Let bij het uitstappen uit de bus goed op het langs rijdende verkeer en laat geen bagage achter op de stoep, kijk even of alles mee genomen is. Bij binnenkomst in het Hotel even naar achteren lopen in de lobby en niet allemaal voor het loket of de ingang blijven staan. Dick Vonk en André de Ruiter regelen de kamer s en de verdeling van de sleutels. Als iedereen zijn spullen op de hotelkamers heeft gezet wordt er verzameld in de lobby achterin het Hotel voor een wandeling naar The Empire State Building. Hier worden de Metropasses en de Citypasses uitgedeeld. Die tweede heb je meteen nodig voor het observatie platform van het Empire State Building.

NY Public Library & NY Public Library South Court Style New York Public Library South Court Davis Brody Bond LLP 2002 Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street Midtown Modernism In 1897 kregen de architecten Carrère & Hastings de eretaak om een ontwerp te maken te maken voor de centrale vestiging van de Public library van New York. De eerste directeur van de bibliotheek had een lichte, stille, ruime leeszaal voor ogen waar miljoenen boeken konden worden opgeslagen, die zo snel mogelijk ter beschikking van de lezers konden worden gesteld. Deze ideeën werden verwezenlijkt in het gebouw van Carrère & Hastings, dat wordt beschouwd als het fraaiste beaux arts-ontwerp in New York. Ondanks dat de bouw de gemeente 9 miljoen dollar had gekost, oogstte het ontwerp in 1911 veel lof.

New York Public Library South Court Style New York Public Library South Court Davis Brody Bond LLP 2002 Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street Midtown Modern The first permanent addition to the New York Public Library in 89 years, the South Court Building is a three-story infill structure in the open south courtyard of the Center for the Humanities Building. In an area that once served as an entrance for horse carriages, it accommodates the Library's growing public education program as well as the administrative / staff support space. This South Court Building stands as a prominent, modern addition to the Library yet also serves to enhance the original landmark building. The entire structure is sky lit, and the floor is set back from the existing stonewalls of the courtyard, revealing the facades to the public for the first time. The original foundation walls are exposed at the bottom of a glass staircase, which descends from the first floor to the auditorium. This successful integration of the original building into the new structure was an important design aspect of this project and the architects worked closely with the Library to achieve a sense of modernity without damaging the original building s integrity.

Grand Central Station Style Grand Central Station Warren & Wetmore, Reed & Stern East 42nd Street at Park Avenue Lower Midtown Beaux-Arts In 1871 opende Cornelius Vanderbilt een spoorwegstation in 42nd Street. Door de aanwas van het passagiersaanbod moest het meermalen vergroot worden. Uiteindelijk werd het gesloopt om plaats te maken voor het huidige gebouw, dat in 1913 zijn poorten opende. Het is sindsdien een van de symbolen van de stad. Het station valt op door zijn hoge hal en de manier waarop voetgangers- en treinverkeer van elkaar gescheiden zijn. Het gebouw bestaat uit een stalen frame, bekleed met marmer en pleisterwerk. In 1998 waren ze klaar met de restauratie.

16 3. Chrysler Building Style Chrysler Building William van Alen 1930 Corner east 42 st. Lexington Avenue Midtown Art deco Enkele maanden na de voltooiing in 1930 van de 320 m hoge toren kwam er een gebouw gereed dat hoger was: het Empire State Building. Maar het 77 verdiepingen tellende Chrysler Building ut 1930 is nog steeds een van de bekendste en geliefdste monumenten van de stad. Het ontwerp van de dakspits werd tot op het laatste moment geheim gehouden. De spits, die in de brandschacht was gebouwd, werd binnendoor naar het dak gehesen en moest verzekeren dat het gebouw hoger zou worden dan de Bank of Manhattan, wat net was voltooid door Van Alen s aartsrivaal, H. Craig Severance.

17 4. Scandinavia House Style Scandinavia House Polshek Partnership Park Avenue, between E37 and E38. Midtown Late Modern (International Style III) Scandinavia House is the headquarters of The American-Scandinavian Foundation, an American non-profit organization that works to build cultural and educational ties between the United States and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Scandinavia House offers a wide range of programs, including art, design, and historical exhibitions as well as film series, concerts, lectures, symposia, language courses, and children's programs that illuminate the contemporary vitality of the Nordic countries. Designed by architect James Stewart Polshek, Scandinavia House opened to the public in 2000.

The Morgan Library & Museum Style Morgan Library expansion project Renzo Piano Madison Avenue Midtown Modern Piano's museum is constructed around a light-filled central courtyard, open and cheerful, from which visitors can take in views of new and old New York. You seem to enter a time-layered city and walk toward greenery. On one side of the courtyard are glass-walled offices, facing inward toward the atrium or courtyard. (Curatorial napping will become more difficult.) On the opposite side are galleries. Immediately at hand is a new twenty-foot cube of exhibition space, inspired by Platonic Renaissance proportions, that's suffused with natural light.

19 6. The Empire State Building Style The Empire State Building Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, William F. Lamb as chief designer Fifth Ave., bet. W33 and W34 Midtown Art Deco Het Empire State Building is het hoogste gebouw van New York. Kort na de Wall Street Crash, in maart 1930, begon men met de bouw en toen het gebouw in 1931 gereed was, bleek het zo moeilijk om huurders te vinden dat het de bijnaam Empty State Building kreeg. Slechts de populaire uitkijkpunten hebben hete gebouw voor faillissement behoed. Inmiddels heeft het gebouw meer dan 110 miljoen bezoekers mogen verwelkomen en is het uitgegroeid tot symbool van New York.

20 American Radiator Building Style American Radiator Building Raymond Hood & André Fouilhoux west, 40 th street, between 5 th & 6 th Avenue, south of Bryant Park Midtown Art Deco, Neo-Gothic Het American radiator Building (later hernoemd tot American Standard Building) is een gebouw van 103 meter (23 verdiepingen) hoog in de wijk Manhattan in New York. Het is in 1924 door de architecten Raymond Hood en André Fouilhoux ontworpen. Het ontwerp kwam kort na de door Hood en Howells ontworpen Chicago Tribune Tower en vormde een serieuze poging tot een architecture parlante (waarbij gebouwen hun eigen functie of identiteit duidelijk maken). De zwarte baksteen van de voorgevel van het gebouw (die steenkool symboliseert) werd gekozen om een indruk van massiviteit op te roepen en het gebouw krachtig neer te zetten. Het door de gotiek geïnspireerde bovengedeelte en delen van de façade zijn versierd met goudkleurige terracotta (als symbool voor vuur).

22 Achtergrondinformatie Oud en nieuw komen samen in dit zuidelijke puntje van Manhattan: koloniale kerken en oude Amerikaanse monumenten staan in de schaduw van de wolkenkrabbers. Dit is het oudste gedeelte van de stad, uit de tijd dat New York nog de hoofdstad van het land was. De geschiedenis gaat terug tot 1626, het jaar waarin de Nederlandse Peter Minuit één van de beroemdste grondaankopen uit de geschiedenis deed. Hij kocht het eiland Man-a-hatt-ta voor $24 aan kralen en snuisterijen van de Algonkin-Indianen. Tegenwoordig bevindt zich hier het financiele hart van de stad: Wall street, Stock exchange en de Twin Towers hebben hier gestaan, op Ground Zero zal de Freedom Tower komen te staan.

25 2. Ground Zero Ground Zero 11 september 2001 Liberty street Lower Manhattan Het World Trade Center was een kantorencomplex in Manhattan, NY, waar ongeveer mensen werkten. Het complex werd vooral gekenmerkt door twee wolkenkrabbers, de Twin Towers. Beide torens werden in de ochtend van 11 september 2001 getroffen door een vliegtuig. Enige tijd later storten ze met een exorbitante snelheid van 10 verdiepingen per seconde in. Later op de dag stortte ook nog WTC toren 7, een 47 verdieping tellend gebouw in. Dat gebouw was echter niet door een vliegtuig geraakt. Het zijn de eerste en tot nu toe enige gebouwen met een stalen frame die zijn ingestort. Hoe en waarom de gebouwen zijn ingestort is tot op heden onbekend. De 1 ste toen werd gebouwd in 1972 en had een hoogte van 417 meter. De 2 de toren werd voltooid in 1973 en had een hoogte van 415 meter. Elke toren had 110 kantoorverdiepingen. Gedurende korte tijd ( ) waren de Twin Towers de hoogste gebouwen ter wereld. De gebouwen zijn ontworpen door de Amerikaanse architecten Minoru Minoru Yamasaki en Antonio Brittiochi. Na de aanslagen is een plan opgesteld om het oude WTC te vervangen. De plannen leidden tot veel discussie over de toekomst van het complex. Verschillende architecten maakten ontwerpen. Uiteindelijk is het ontwerp (de Freedom Tower) van Daniel Libeskind uitgekozen. Op de precieze plaats van de voormalige Twin Towers zal een monument voor de slachtoffers van de ramp worden gebouwd.

26 Freedom Tower Freedom Tower Daniel Libeskind 2011 (verwachting) Lower Manhattan De Freedom Tower is de naam van het nieuwe World Trade Center in New York, waarvan de voorgangers zijn ingestort na de terroristische aanslagen op 11 september De toren is een ontwerp van de architect Daniel Libeskind. De toren zal worden gebouwd in de noordwest hoek van het 6,5 hectare grote World Trade Center gebied. De toren zal een hoogte krijgen van 1776 voet (541 meter) wat het jaar 1776 symboliseert, het jaar waarin het Amerikaanse Congres de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring aanneemt. De hoogte tot het hoogste dak zal 415 meter bedragen. Op 27 april 2006 is de bouw van de funderingen officieel begonnen, de bouw zal worden afgerond in Naast de Freedom Tower komen er 5 andere torens: WTC 7 (inmiddels voltooid), 200 Greenwich, 175 Greenwich, 150 Greenwich en Tower 5.

WTC Site World Trade Center Site Vesey Street, West Street, Washington Street and Fulton Street Lower Manhattan The World Trade Center site is the 16-acre (6.47-hectare) real estate on which the WTC complex stood in New York until the September 11, 2001 attacks. The site is located in lower Manhattan island and most of the site (where its buildings except 7WTC were located) is bounded to the north by Vesey Street, to the west by the West Side Highway, to the south by Liberty Street and to the east by Church Street. In the northern portion of the site across Vesey Street, the former location of 7WTC is bounded to the west by Washington Street, to the north by Barclay Street, and to the east by West Broadway. Because the lease for the World Trade Center was purchased in July 2001 by Silverstein Properties Inc. owner Larry Silverstein from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) for $3.2 billion, Silverstein controls the rebuilding on the site.

World Financial Center Style World Financial Center César Pelli and Adamson Associates West Street Lower Manhattan Post modern The World Financial Center is a complex of buildings across West Street from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan in New York City, overlooking the Hudson River. This complex is home to offices of major corporations including Merrill Lynch and American Express as well as Dow Jones and its Wall Street Journal division among others. The entire complex is owned by Brookfield Properties, except for the space occupied by American Express. Designed by César Pelli, with Adamson Associates, the complex was built by Olympia and York between 1985 and 1988 on landfill used to build Battery Park City. The fill material came from dirt excavated during the building of the World Trade Center, as well as garbage, dirt and debris. Portions of the complex, especially the Winter Garden, were severely damaged in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but has since been reopened after significant repairs.

29 6. Woolworth Building Style Woolworth Building Cass Gilbert Broadway Upper Midtown Gotisch In 1879 opende de winkelbediende Frank W. Woolworth een nieuw type winkel waar de klanten waren konden bekijken en aanraken en waar alles 5 cent kostte. De winkelketen die hieruit voortkwam leverde hem een fortuin op en heft het winkelbedrijf ingrijpend veranderd. Het gotische gebouw uit 1913, dat dienst deed als hoofdkantoor van dit imperium, was tot 1930 het hoogste gebouw van New York. Het was de eerste grote wolkenkrabber en het fraaiste kantoorgebouw. Het in 2 lagen uitgevoerde ontwerp van architect Cass Gilbert is opgesierd met gargouilles in de vorm van vleermuizen en andere dieren en heeft een dak in de vorm van een piramide met luchtbogen, pinakels en 4 torentjes. Het marmeren interieur bevat veel filigreinwerk, sculpturen en wandschilderingen. De hal is een juweeltje. Hier toonde Gilbert zijn gevoel voor humor in de bas-reliëfs. Men ziet hoe de oprichter zijn centjes zit te tellen, hoe de makelaar een overeenkomst afsluit en hoe Gilbert zelf een model van het gebouw in de armen sluit. Het gebouw werd contant betaald met $13,5 miljoen. Woolworth s hield er in 1997 mee op. Het gebouw is nu eigendom van de Witkoff Group.

New York City Hall Style New York City Hall Joseph Francois Mangin and John McComb, Jr City Hall Park Upper Midtown International Style City Hall, waar het gemeentebestuur van New York zetelt, is een van de fraaiste voorbeelden van vroege 19de-eeuwse Amerikaanse bouwkunst. Het is een statig gebouw in federal-stijl met een vleugje Franse Renaissance, dat werd ontworpen door de Franse emigrant Joseph Mangin en John McComb Jr, de eerste bekende architect die in Amerika was geboren. Op de achterwand van het gebouw werd geen marmerlaag aangebracht, want men verwachtte niet dat de stad zich nog verder naar het noorden zou uitbreiden. Pas bij een renovatie in 1954 werd aan de achterzijde marmer aangebracht en het interieur opgeknapt.

Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn Eclectic: Roman Form, Neo-Gothic arches, Egyptoid Details De in 1883 gebouwde Brooklyn Bridge is een hangbrug over de East River, ze verbindt Brooklyn met Lower Manhattan. De architecten waren John en Washington Roebling, vader en zoon, zij wilden de mooiste brug ter wereld creëren. De brug is 1834 meter lang, en de grootste overspanning is 486 meter. Daardoor had de brug tot de bouw van de Williamsburg bridge in 1903 de langste overspanning ter wereld. Momenteel (2005) is het de 64e hangbrug ter wereld qua overspanning. Door het voltooien van de brug en door zijn recordlengte ontstond een nieuwe opvatting over de stedelijke schaal van New York. In de brug wordt de tegenstelling duidelijk tussen de oude materialen en de nieuwe materialen van het nieuwe tijdperk, de massieve dragers en de 'fijne' bekabeling die het wegdek draagt. De brug werd een nationaal symbool voor de hereniging en de verbondenheid na de burgeroorlog in de jaren '60 van de 19e eeuw.

32 9. Oude gebouwen in Manhattan New York behoorde vroeger aan de Nederlanders. In 1625 arriveerde een Nederlandse schip van de West- Indische Compagnie bij het eiland Manhattan in New York. Zij wilden de bonthandel van deze compagnie in de Hudson vallei beschermen. Ze noemden de stad Nieuw Amsterdam. In 1628 kocht Peter Minuit Manhattan van de Indianen voor snuisterijen ter waarde van 60 gulden. In 1644 viel Nieuw Amsterdam in de handen van de Engelsen, die het New York noemden naar de hertog van York. In 1673 had Nederland het weer even in bezit maar al gauw nadat ze de naam veranderden in Nieuw-Oranje werd het definitief overgedragen aan de Britten bij de Vrede van Westminster in 1674.

33 11. Seaport Historic Het drukke Civic Center in Manhattan is het juridische centrum van de stad, de staat en het land. Ook het hoofdbureau van de eiland is er gevestigd. Rond 1880 was het ook de perscentrum van de stad. 37 Achtergrondinformatie Chelsea en het Garment In 1750 was Chelsea een landbouwgebied, in 1830 was het een buitenwijk en na de aanleg van de luchtspoorweg in de jaren 1870 werd het een handelswijk. In 23rd Street waren variété-theaters en toneelhuizen. De warenhuizen van Fashion Row, die vlak naast de luchtspoorweg stonden, richtten zich op de New Yorkse middenklasse, maar toen steeds meer modezaken uitweken naar noordelijker gelegen wijken, ging het slechter met Chelsea. Het werd een wijk met pakhuizen tot de New Yorkers, na het verdwijnen van de spoorweg, de fraaie 19de-eeuwse wijken herontdekten. Terwijl de bloei van Chelsea stagneerde, ging het steeds beter met Herald Square. Soho en TriBeCa Kunst en architectuur zijn bepalend voor de aanblik van deze vroegere industriewijken. SoHo (South of Houston St.) dreigde in de jaren zestig te worden gesloopt. Baruch College Baruch College Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates Lexington Avenue Gramercy & Flatiron Described as a vertical campus, Baruch College in Manhattan contains 40% of Baruch s total campus area in one dense urban building. It is a uniquely New York building, condensing and intensifying the vertical potentials of a multifunctional structure. The conceptual strategy consists of a filled out New York zoning envelope that is strategically carved to create a series of volumetric internal voids, analogous to traditional campus quadrangles.

42 2. The Flatiron Building Style Flatiron Building Daniel H. Burnham & co Fifth Avenue Flat iron district Beaux arts Dit gebouw van de uit Chicago afkomstige architect David Burnham, dat oorspronkelijk Fuller Building heette, was bij de voltooiing in 1903 het hoogste ter wereld. Het gebouw is 22 verdiepingen hoog en telt 87 meter. Als een van de eerste gebouwen met een stalen frame was het een voorloper van de latere wolkenkrabbers. Het gebouw stond vanwege zijn bizarre driehoekige vorm al gauw bekend als het Flatiron ( strijkijzer ). The Porter House The Porter House Gregg pasquarelli of ShoP/Sharples Holden Pasqyarelli Addition West 15 th Street / 60 Ninth Avenue (the corner of Ninth avenue and 15 th street) SoHo The Porter House, a new condominium rising 10 stories above the rapidly changing area known both as Gansevoort market and the meatpacking district, takes its name from the cut of steak. Completing the circle that cut of meat had, long ago, taken its name from a type of building. The 22-apartment luxury development on the corner of Ninth Avenue and 15 th Street offers high ceilings, large layouts and asking prices of $1.1 million for the smallest two-bedroom apartments. The lower part of the $22 million project is a careful restoration of a brick Renaissance Revival warehouse built for Julius Wile, wine importers, in Until recently the building was owned and occupied by a furniture manufacturer. The old part of the condominium is topped with four new sleek full stories with a façade of zinc and glass that cantilevers eight feet over the top of an adjoining building, and two partial floors that wrap down on the back of the old six-story structure. The zinc panels are to be laced with vertical lights that will glow softly in the evening light.

Featuring a 5,000-sq.-ft. rooftop development - including a 45-ft. outdoor pool with underwater music, a rooftop garden and an events loft - the freestanding reinforced concrete building will have zinc-colored metal panels, glass-sheathed French balconies and projecting bay windows. The hotel was designed by New York-based architect Stephen B. Jacobs and interior designer Andi Pepper, the team responsible for the Library and Giraffe hotels.

Perry Street Condominium Towers Style Perry Street Condominium Towers Richard Meier /176 Perry Street Greenwich Village Modern The two Perry Street residential condominiums located in Greenwich Village mark Pritzker Prize architect Richard Meier s first Manhattan project since Westbeth in the late 1960 s, which transformed a massive former Bell Telephone laboratory space into low cost housing for artists. The 16 story towers stand at the north and south corners of Perry and West Street in the West Village overlooking the Hudsen River. Their transparent minimal form will make a striking addition to a section of the New York City skyline otherwise known for its low rise, turn of the (19 th ) century red brick structures.

46 Greenwich Street 497 Greenwich Street project Winka Dubbeldam, Archi-Tectonics Greenwich Street Greenwich Village After graduating from the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam in 1990, Dubbeldam went to the United States. There she worked for Steven Holl, Bernard Tschumi and Peter Eisenman, before establishing her own office, Archi-Techtonics, in Dubbeldam's latest project is the Greenwich Street Project: a six-floor former warehouse building converted into an eleven-floor residential and office building. The new building is a socalled parabuilding: it folds around the existing warehouse on Greenwich Street. Placed on top of the existing structure is a four-floor penthouse of glass and steel. The warehouse remains clearly visible, but has been thoroughly gutted to enhance its functionality. Only the brick facades and the floor remain intact.

Founded in 1982, Storefront for Art and Architecture is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing innovative positions in art, architecture and design. Our program of exhibitions, events and publications are intended to generate dialogue and collaboration across geographic, ideological and disciplinary boundaries. The Storefront Facade In 1993, Storefront commissioned a collaborative building project by artist Vito Acconci and architect Steven Holl. The project replaced the existing facade with a series of twelve panels that pivot vertically or horizontally to open the entire length of the gallery directly onto the street. The project blurs the boundary between interior and exterior and, by placing the panels in different configurations, creates a multitude of different possible facades. Now regarded as a contemporary architectural landmark, Storefronts facade is visited by artists, architects and students from around the world.

48 12. Scholastic Inc. Style Scholastic Aldo Rossi Broadway SoHo Post-Modernism There are easy ways to expand a headquarters. Then there is the way chosen by Scholastic Inc. at 557 Broadway: Construct an entirely new building on a prime site in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic, one of the most scrutinized landmark precincts in New York; containing almost twice the floor area that zoning rules allowed on the site; designed by Aldo Rossi, the celebrated Italian architect who had never before worked in the city and who died in a car accident before the project began; requiring the service of the tallest freestanding tower crane ever erected in New York; on property leased from seven different members of a single family, where another tenant was already in place; next door to an artists' co-op whose units would lose light, air and even whole windows; with foundations not only on sandy soil but so close to the subway platform that one could almost hear the announcements aboard the N and R trains as they passed.

49 14. Prada Flagship Store Prada flag store Rem Koolhaas, OMA Broadway, at Prince St. SoHo $40 million for 23,000 square feet of retail space? Even by New York City standards, the sum was certainly large enough to create a great deal of interest in Prada's flagship store well before it opened. For a company $785 million in debt, and that has tried unsuccessfully going public on three different occasions, opening this store was certainly meant to be an attention-getting device. Rem Koolhaas' design for the store, which opened in December 2001, had an opening event that featured celebrity guests and even the then New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani - and thus it would seem the design did at least partially what Prada wanted.

Renowned for its galleries, museums, boutiques, restaurants and nightlife, Soho is a landmarked district set amidst unique cast iron architecture. Minutes from Wall Street, Tribeca, Greenwich Village, Little Italy and Chelsea. A little history... built in 1890 for John Jacob Astor II, the 6 story, 84,000 square foot brick building has been cited by the New York City Preservation Commission as a singularly outstanding example of the Romanesque Revival period by noted Architect William Schickel.

Yale Hockey Rink Style Yale Hockey Rink - Yale whale Eero Saarinen Sachem Street New Haven Expressionist Modern Situated on the Yale campus, the rink is of standard size and seating is arranged round it for 2,800 people. the rink is used for other purposes the accommodation can be increased to 5,000. The building s plan is elliptical and cast-concrete walls run round the two long edges of the ellipse. These walls slant upwards and outwards at an angle of 15 degrees; above them the drama of the roof occurs. A central arch spans the major axis of the ellipse and from this great spin-like arch, cables take out two catenary curves in both directions. The concave and the convex forms create a mutual tension and through this a dynamic building emerges.

Knights of Columbus Building Style Knights of Columbus Building "Kevin Roche, John Dinkeloo & Associates LLC", or 'Roche-Dinkeloo' Columbus Plaza New Haven Modernism A 23-story office building primarily faced with glass shaded by massive overhangs of weathering steel, it has at its four corners tile-sheathed, circular concrete columns that contain lavatories and fire stairs and, in conjunction with the building's elevator core, support its structural girders. Steel overhangs are omitted from its more gently handled bottom three stories. The four corner cylinders of this office fortress are brick-concrete pipes; the ceiling joists are brown, weatherproof steel. The elevators operate within a central core, while escape stairs and sanitary facilities are housed inside the pipes. The Coliseum with its ice hockey stadium and multi-purpose hall occupies the neighboring site beside the city expressway. A car-park for 2400 vehicles was created inside the huge, fourstorey roof section and accessed via two spiral ramps.

Yale University Art Gallery Style Yale University Art Gallery Louis Kahn Chapel Street New Haven Modernism Ambiguous functional requirements, a building to house architectural studios as well as a portion of the University's art collection led Kahn to the creation of a highly flexible space. Pushing technology, Kahn implemented a tetrahedral waffle-slab that formed both the floor of one room and the ceiling of another. Adequate space for building services, including an extensive air-conditioning system, provided a functional basis for this sweeping spatial gesture. The resulting space, enclosing a circulation core, remained free from strict wall definition while retaining elegance through exhaustive material detailing.

Beinecke Rare Book Library Style Beinecke Rare Book Library Gordon Bunshaft Wall Street New Haven Modernism Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library was a 1963 gift of the Beinecke family. The building, designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft, of the firm of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, is the largest building in the world reserved exclusively for the preservation of rare books and manuscripts. It is built at the center of the University, in Hewitt Quadrangle, which is more commonly referred to as "Beinecke Plaza". A sixstory above-ground tower of book stacks is surrounded by a windowless rectangular building with walls made of a translucent Danby marble, which transmit subdued lighting and provide protection from direct light. Three floors of stacks extend under Hewitt Quadrangle. The sculptures in the sunken courtyard are by Isamu Noguchi and are said to represent time (the pyramid), sun (the circle), and chance (the cube). The library also contains an exhibition hall that, among other things, displays one of the 48 existent copies of the Gutenberg Bible, study areas, reading rooms, the catalogue room, microfilm room, offices, and the book storage areas.

Arts and Architecture building Style University Art center Paul Rudolph York Street New Haven Modernism Inspired both by Wright's Larkin Building and Le Corbusier's La Tourette, this sculptural building has been criticized for "style at the expense of content". The asymmetrical building, on an asymmetrical site (a corner), dominates the setting with its bold towers, housing mechanical services, and huge slabs bridging the towers. The building has also been criticized for its lack of functionality and "mysterious" plan--39 different levels on seven stories.

Yale Center for British Art Style Yale Center for British Art Louis Kahn Chapel Street New Haven Modernism Louis Kahn's Yale Center for British Art, based on a repetitive 20-foot-square grid, was formally conceived as a series of highly structured 'roomlike' spaces. Organized around two inner courts which, like the fourth and top floor, are beautifully naturally lighted from above through a coffered skylight system, the whole ambiance of the building is rich, seductive, and well-scaled to the mainly eighteenth and early nineteenth century paintings. The exposed concrete structure with oak paneled inserts has led to a warmer, more sedate feeling, appropriate to the art displayed. As Kahn asked himself questions about light to the interior he made openings in planes; as he broached questions of exhibit he devised systems to place planes in space.

61 8. Breuer House Style Breuer House Marcel Breuer 1945 Sunset Hill Road New Canaan Modernism The structural theme of this hillside house is the daring yet disciplined use of the cantilever. Breuer had been experimenting with using frame walls as trusslike members, and here this potential inherent in wood frame construction is exploited to the utmost. The building cantilevers from its whitewashed concrete base in four directions. To reinforce the truss effect of the frame walls, Breuer has employed diagonal boarding. It is noteworthy that the resulting floating appearance of the house has been achieved without the use of steel structural members. Tension cables of standard marine rigging support the balcony.

Johnson House, "The Glass House" Style Johnson House Philip Johnson 1949 New Canaan Modernism Philip Johnsons first significant building, and still perhaps his most famous, was not for another client at all but, like the Cambridge house, for his own use: it was the Glass House in New Canaan, completed in 1949 with its counterpoint, a brick guest house. "The serene Glass House, a 56-foot-by-32-foot rectangle, is generally considered one of the 20th century's greatest residential structures. Like all of Mr. Johnson's early work, it was inspired by Mies, but its pure symmetry, dark colors and closeness to the earth marked it as a personal statement: calm and ordered rather than sleek and brittle.... The compound was willed to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which plans to run it as a museum.
