2 EVENTS, INCIDENTS & OPERATIONS Police board Rainbow Warrior at Port Kembla The New Zealand captain of the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior has been arrested after a protest action at a port south of Sydney early today. Police said the captain would be taken to Port Kembla Police Station for questioning as soon as the Warrior was berthed at a port wharf. At 1am (AEST), a tugboat was pulling the Warrior away from its position blockading a container ship at Port Kembla harbour, a NSW Police spokeswoman said. The rest of the 22-member crew were helping police with their inquiries, she said. Greenpeace had achieved part of its objective in drawing public attention to the genetically engineered (GE) shipment, the organisation's GE campaign co-ordinator, John Hepburn, said. "We had hoped to be position until dawn; it's very disappointing to see the Warrior tugged away," Mr Hepburn said. "Now thousands of tonnes of GE soy feed will make its way into the Australian food chain unlabelled after the ship docks in Melbourne." The Rainbow Warrior had been blockading the harbour since yesterday, preventing container ship The Rhein from leaving with a shipment of genetically engineered soy bound for Melbourne. The Rhein and its shipment were at the centre of a protest action in Brisbane last week. MAYFLOWER ENERGY MBO THE specialist wind turbine installation vessel Mayflower Resolution will continue to be operated by Mayflower Energy Limited which has been sold by administrators Deloitte & Touche to a management buy-out team led by its Mayflower Energy s MD Paul Gibson. The business is being sold as a going concern. Nick Dargan, joint administrator of the Mayflower Group said: We received significant interest in the business but after reviewing all the offers concluded that the MBO was the most viable option. The MBO ensures that the business key asset, the Mayflower Resolution vessel, remains in the renewable energy sector and that the jobs of remaining employees are protected. Pakistani team arrives in London A HIGH powered Pakistani team led by the communications minister Senator Babar Khan Ghouri is in London for a meeting with Tasman Spirit s insurer The American Club to resolve the oil spill damages issue. Although still not a member of any international conventions covering oil spill damages, Pakistan is hoping for a satisfactory compensation package following the release of the Karachi Eight last week. They had been detained for nearly nine months for alleged negligence in the grounding of the Greek Aframax tanker Tasman Spirit and subsequent spill of more than 28,000 tonnes of crude oil. Na de plechtigheid poseerde de actrice samen met kapitein Dirk van den Berg voor de boeg van het schip. De Westerdam komt op 31 juli voor een eendaags bezoek naar Rotterdam. (Foto Frans Schellekens) Venetië - Kapitein Dirk van den Berg van de Westerdam, het nieuwste cruiseschip van de Holland America Line, is in training voor de Olympische Spelen. In augustus is hij, als de Westerdam als hotelschip ligt afgemeerd in de haven van Athene, gastheer voor de Russische delegatie.,,president Poetin krijgt de hut naast die van mij,'' vertelt Van den Berg.,,Kunnen we mooi elke avond klaverjassen.'' Van den Berg (60) heeft afgelopen dagen eindelijk kunnen varen met 'zijn' schip. Gistermiddag is de Westerdam in Venetië gedoopt door actrice Renée Soutendijk. Voorafgaand aan die gebeurtenis heeft de Westerdam een driedaagse 'proefcruise' gemaakt op de Adriatische Zee.,,Eindelijk was het dan zo ver,'' zegt de uit Arnhem afkomstige Van den Berg, die al twaalf jaar gezagvoerder is en al vanaf het begin van zijn carrière voor de Holland America Line vaart.,,het was een mooie ervaring om vanaf het najaar de afbouw en de oplevering van het schip mee te maken, maar het werd de hoogste tijd om te gaan varen.'' De kapitein was donderdagmiddag dan ook zó blij, dat hij toen de Westerdam door het Canale della Guidecca langs het beroemde San Marco-plein en het Palazzo Ducale voer, de scheepshoorn een paar keer extra liet loeien.,,ik zag dat de kade bij het het plein vol stond met mensen. Daar stonden vast ook een heleboel mensen bij die aan het schip hebben meegebouwd. Dat extra saluut was speciaal voor die mensen.'' Gistermorgen bij terugkeer in Venetië, dat de jaarlijkse gedenkdag van de heilige Marcus vierde, was het veel te vroeg voor zo'n luide groet. De Westerdam is het derde schip in de zogeheten Vista-klasse van de Holland America Line (HAL). Afgelopen oktober liep het schip nog tijdens de bouw op de Marghera-werf van scheepsbouwer Fincantièri flinke schade op als gevolg van een grote brand op het achterdek. In december 2002 is de Zuiderdam als eerste in de vaart gebracht gevolgd door de Oosterdam, die vorig jaar zomer in Rotterdam is gedoopt. Begin 2006 volgt nog de Noordam. De vier luxe, vijf sterren cruiseschepen bieden elk plaats aan passagiers, die 924 hutten tot hun beschikking hebben, en ruim negenhonderd bemanningsleden. De Westerdam is het eerste schip in de HAL-vloot, waarin meteen alle luxe verbeteringen die de rederij bezig is door te voeren - een verbeteringsprogramma van 225 miljoen dollar - zijn verwerkt. Als de Noordam in de vaart is gebracht bestaat de HAL-vloot uit dertien schepen. Dit jaar maken de schepen samen ruim vijfhonderd reizen vanuit 23 havens en wordt in totaal in bijna driehonderd havens in 63 landen een 'call' gemaakt. Het maken van cruises wordt steeds populairder, vertelt directeur Hans Klinge van reisorganisatie Zeetours in Rotterdam, de op één na grootste cruisespecialist van Nederland. Zeetours heeft vorig jaar fors meer cruisereizen verkocht. Alleen al voor de Holland America Line zag Zeetours het aantal passagiers met vijftig procent groeien tot meer dan vierduizend. 4 ruim tienduizend cruises verkocht. De HAL heeft sinds kort op alle schepen medewerkers die naast Engels, ook Nederlands, Spaans en Duits spreken. Volgens Klinge neemt ook de gemiddelde reissom toe.,,vooral omdat vaker wordt gekozen voor duurdere reizen,'' licht hij toe.,,het is lastig om van de goedkope reizen af te komen.'' Tijdens de eerste drie reizen van de Westerdam heeft Zeetours meer dan driehonderd passagiers aan boord. Klinge:,,In bijna alle gevallen gaat het om reizen van meer dan tweeduizend euro, terwijl er al voor vijftienhonderd euro kan worden geboekt.'' Topman Stein Kruse van de HAL zegt nog geen idee te hebben wat de rederij gaat doen als ook het vierde Vista-schip in de vaart is gebracht.,,we hebben laten zien dat we de extra capaciteit hebben kunnen absorberen,'' vertelt hij aan boord van de nieuwe Westerdam.,,Door een goed en gunstig prijsbeleid zijn we ook in staat zelf extra vraag te creëren. De toekomst ziet er gunstig uit. Amerika staat aan de vooravond van een periode waarin veel babyboomers gaan genieten van hun extra vrije dagen en hun verdiende geld. Er zijn de VS nu meer dan tachtig miljoen mensen van vijftig jaar en ouder. Daar komen er in de komende jaren nog twintig miljoen bij. Op dit moment wordt er elke acht seconden aan Amerikaan vijftig jaar.'' Kruse beschrijft de nieuwe Westerdam als 'een logische evolutie' van de Vista-klasse.,,Er is geleerd van foutjes die we bij de eerste twee schepen hebben gemaakt,'' licht hij toe.,,frans heeft weer goed werk gedaan,'' deelt hij een compliment uit aan de Utrechtse architect Frans Dingemans, onder wiens leiding de huidige schepen voor de HAL zijn ontworpen en ingericht.,,bij de Westerdam zijn we verder gegaan met het succes van de Zuiderdam en de Oosterdam. De Vista-schepen hebben een eigen karakter: helder en jong. De Westerdam is licht aangepast. De Noordam zal niet veel van dit schip verschillen.'' Topman Kruse is niet bang dat, net als in de luchtvaart, cruiseprijzen onder druk komen te staan door nieuwe, goedkope concepten. Later dit jaar gaat de Griekse zakenman Stelios Haji-Ioannou easycruise introduceren als vervolg op het easyjet-succes.,,wat Stelios gaat doen is heel moedig,'' vindt Kruse.,,Ik ben blij met elke innovatie in de cruisemarkt, maar het maken van een cruise is een belevenis. Het nieuwe easycruise is meer een goedkope vorm van vervoer. Ik denk niet dat passagiers willen betalen voor het laten opmaken van hun bed.'' Smaller boxships enjoy the boom THE containership charter market shows no sign of running out of steam with the recent boom in rates definitely trickling down to smaller tonnage. According to Braemar Container Shipping & Chartering: With rates of $13,250 now being obtained for UCC14/RW49 (1,000 TEU geared) class ships, it is apparent that the highs of 1995/6 that many once thought would be unobtainable again are about to be breached. Such vessels are now becoming the workhorse of the feeder trades and it is this demand, brought about by the expansion of main line services, which should sustain high levels for ships in this class. Fixtures concluded in other sectors of the market recently include the B170-class Wehr Flottbek which has been fixed to Evergreen Marine for three years at $19,950 per day. Interestingly, the Merkur Beach, a slightly older B170 has been taken by OOCL for $1,000 more than the Evergreen fixture, although on shorter terms of two years. Meanwhile, trans-pacific newcomer US Lines has fixed the 1,679 TEU Bermudian Express for 20 months at a rate of $20,050 per day. This ship s relatively high service speed of 21kt means its owner gains a premium on more standard ships of this capacity. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 4 4/27/2004

Rebecca Hammann sustained minor damage and continued on voyage. The barge towed by tug Ajaks sustained some damage, the tow proceeded on voyage to Oskarshamn. SHIPYARD NEWS BAE may sell shipbuilding business BAE Systems says it is reviewing the possible sale of its UK naval shipbuilding operations, in a move that could speed a trans-atlantic merger. Europe's biggest defence firm generates larger sales in the United States and continental Europe than it does in Britain, where it has struggled to make naval ship programmes profitable. "BAE Systems notes the recent press speculation regarding a possible sale of its naval shipbuilding businesses and confirms that it is currently reviewing its options regarding these businesses," BAE said in a statement on Monday. A BAE spokesman told Reuters over the weekend that U.S. defence firm General Dynamics and British shipbuilder VT Group VTG.L had expressed interest. Analysts valued BAE's naval shipbuilding operations at 350 million to 400 million pounds. VT declined to comment on Monday, but industry sources said the shipbuilder's potential interest would likely be limited to BAE's surface ships business and support services related to it. General Dynamics was seen as more logical for the submarines side of the operations, suggesting BAE may be seeking two parallel deals. A BAE spokesman declined to comment on such details. BAE Systems' naval division includes a submarine assembly plant at Barrow-in-Furness in northwestern England and its Govan and Scotstoun yards on the River Clyde in Glasgow. Analysts said the operations, with an annual turnover of around 800 million pounds, lose money on an operating basis. Selling them would therefore help draw takeover or merger interest for BAE from Boeing or other U.S. rivals, they said. Boeing Chief Executive Harry Stonecipher said in February he had no interest in buying BAE Systems as he did not want to be in the torpedo and shipbuilding business. Brokerage Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein analysts raised their target price to 213p from 187p on Monday and said the market would view any such deal favourably. BAE BA.L shares were higher than that on Monday, up 3.13 percent at 222-1/4 pence versus a FTSE 100 index up 0.16 percent at 1 p.m. VT was up 0.56 percent at 270-1/2 pence. BAE is currently prime contractor on the British government's aircraft-carrier programme and also builds nuclear submarines and destroyer ships. 7 Maersk Sealand sees more growth The container shipping business is set to go on growing this and next year, according to the head of Maersk Sealand, the container unit of Denmark's A P Moeller-Maersk. 'For 2004 and 2005 it looks as if there will continue to be good economic growth in the various markets, and this will have an effect on the container business,' Maersk Sealand chief executive Knud Stubkjaer told Reuters. The MEARSK KOLKATA entering Rotterdam photo : Piet Sinke Mr Stubkjaer's comments came after he spoke at a container conference in London last week, where his projections diverged from those of analysts, who have forecast a slump in the container market in But Mr Stubkjaer joins other top liner executives who have downplayed the analysts' warnings. Industry analysts have projected that the supply of new shipping tonnage would surpass demand for container transport. Such forecasts have had an impact on the shares of listed shipping companies recently. Last week Ron Widdows, the Singapore-based chief executive officer of APL, dismissed 'rumours' of an imminent sharp drop in shipping freight rates as 'greatly exaggerated'. Container rates have risen over the past year due in part to an export boom in China and the ensuing price rises on routes from Asia to Europe and the US. Mr Stubkjaer too, was not moved. He said: 'Our presentation in London showed that the developments in 2004 and 2005 will be positive.' Maersk Sealand is the Maersk group's biggest unit, generating a turnover of 90 billion Danish crowns (S$24.3 billion) in Mr Widdows who heads NOL's container arm APL said last week that analysts have consistently underestimated the growth in demand for shipping services. 'Not only is there no excess capacity, but also the world's supply of container ships that exists today is fully employed,' he said. Mid-May deadline for northern isles THE Scottish Executive, the country s administrative assembly, has set May 14 as the deadline for new tenders to provide daily ferry services between the Orkney and Shetland islands and northern Scotland. The tender was brought to an end recently following the need for the Executive to pay an additional 13.4M ($24M) on top of the 31M it has paid over the last 18 months in order to keep these essential services running. 8 infrastructure problems preventing the company using one of its ships for six months and competition from other operators. Despite this, NorthLink is now considering whether or not to retender. The service was previously operated by P&O Scottish Ferries, but P&O is cutting back its ferry activities and is thought unlikely to tender. One possible bidder is the Faroese company Smyril Line. The Executive is hoping that a new service might be running by early next year. Rickmers Seoul latest vessel to join Rickmers-Linie fleet RICKMERS-LINIE has named its latest vessel the Rickmers Seoul. According to the carrier, South Korea plays an important role in its Asian business dealings and as result the company decided to name the new vessel after the capitol of South Korea Following a naming ceremony for the new vessels in Masan, South Korea, on April 22, guests were given guided tours on the new Superflex Heavy vessel The vessel is being used on Rickmer's round-the-world Pearl String Service. Ferry relaunched on River Severn A ferry service, which was first started 300 years ago, is to be relaunched on the River Severn in Shropshire. There has been no ferry at Hampton Loades for four years after the old one sunk after 35 years of service. A new ferry will be launched from Chelmarsh, in Shropshire, on Monday thanks to a 17,000 grant from the Countryside Agency. It has been re-built at Blists Hill Victorian Museum at Ironbridge. Captain Carolyn Stait will take up the top post at HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane in June. The 32-year-old, from Dorset, is the only woman among the 45-strong crew of the ship, which is based at HM Naval Base Clyde. Piet Sinke AIRCRAFT / AIRPORT NEWS Boeing gaat door met 7E7 De Amerikaanse vliegtuigbouwer Boeing gaat definitief door met de bouw van de 7E7 Dreamliner. Dit energiezuinige vliegtuig met ruim tweehonderd stoelen moet het antwoord worden op de A380, het nieuwe reuzentoestel van Airbus. Boeing kondigde de officiële lancering van de 7E7 maandag aan, kort nadat de Japanse luchtvaartmaatschappij All Nippon Airways (ANA) een zeer forse order voor het nieuwe vliegtuig had aangekondigd. ANA is de eerste maatschappij die de 7E7 bestelt. De onderneming, die ook al de bouwprogramma's van Boeing voor de 767 en de 777 in gang zette, wil in totaal vijftig toestellen afnemen voor een bedrag van circa 6 miljard dollar (5,1 miljard euro). De Japanners kunnen in 2008 over de eerste Dreamliner beschikken. Boeing biedt de 7E7 sinds december aan zijn klanten aan. Het concern zegt inmiddels gesprekken te hebben gevoerd met meer dan vijftig luchtvaartmaatschappijen. De 7E7 gebruikt volgens Boeing 20 procent minder brandstof dan de huidige toestellen met een vergelijkbare grootte. Het toestel biedt daarnaast meer comfort, zoals een grotere bagageruimte, ruimere stoelen en gangpaden en grotere ramen. Boeing heeft eerder nog overwogen om ook een reuzentoestel te gaan ontwikkelen. In de A380 van Airbus passen minstens vijfhonderd passagiers. Na bestudering van de luchtvaartmarkt besloot Boeing echter zijn kaarten op de 7E7 te zetten. Volgens de Amerikaanse vliegtuigbouwer is er gezien de krappere winstmarges in de luchtvaartindustrie en de wens bij luchtvaartmaatschappijen om snel van luchthaven naar luchthaven te hoppen meer behoefte aan een kleiner toestel.
