4 Curriculum Vitae & Acknowledgments Curriculum Vitae Reinier Abraham Boon was born on the 30th of August 1981 in Krimpen aan den IJssel. He graduated from high school (VWO) in May In September of that year, he started his Medical Biology study at the University of Amsterdam. During this five-year study, he did two major research projects, one of six months at the department of Molecular Cytology of the University of Amsterdam and one of nine months at the department of Cell and Developmental Biology of the John Innes Centre (Norwich, England). His Masters thesis, entitled MEF2 in cardiovascular disease, was written in collaboration with the department of Medical Biochemistry of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. He received his Masters degree ahead of schedule in June 2004, two weeks after he had already started his PhD project at the department of Medical Biochemistry of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam under the supervision of Dr. A.J.G. Horrevoets and Prof. Dr. H. Pannekoek. From September 2007 until February 2008, Reinier worked on his PhD project at the Molecular Cardiology department of the J.W. Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. S. Dimmeler. After his stay in Frankfurt am Main, he continued his PhD project under the supervision of Prof. Dr. A.J.G. Horrevoets at the department of Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology of the Free University in Amsterdam, where he is currently working as a post-doctoral fellow. As of December 2008 he will continue his career as a post-doctoral fellow at the Molecular Cardiology department of the J.W. Meestal bestaat dit deel van het proefschrift uit zeer persoonlijke boodschappen aan dierbare mensen die verder eigenlijk niet direct hebben bijgedragen aan het proefschrift. Die boodschappen schrijf ik uiteraard ook in mijn proefschrift, maar dan persoonlijk en met de hand in de individuele exemplaren. De mensen die direct hebben bijgedragen aan mijn proefschrift wil ik graag en plein public bedanken: Ten eerste wil ik natuurlijk mijn beide promotoren bedanken. Hans, je emeritaat halverwege mijn promotietraject heeft ertoe geleid dat wij elkaar nog maar weinig zagen en dat je geleidelijk het stokje geheel hebt overgedragen aan Anton. Ondanks dat heb je me toch altijd bijgestaan met raad en daad. Ik ben vereerd dat ik als een van je laatste promovendi de bul van jou in ontvangst mag nemen. Anton, op de een of andere manier hebben wij in het begin erg aan elkaar moeten wennen, maar het ging ondanks dat op wetenschappelijk vlak meteen goed. Dankzij onze nauwe samenwerking ben ik je meer en meer gaan waarderen als mentor, inspirator, co-promotor en promotor. Jouw idee om een tijdje te gaan werken in een vooraanstaand buitenlands lab heeft voor mij uitstekend uitgepakt en ik stel het dan ook zeer op prijs dat je me daar bijna een half jaar betaald verlof voor hebt gegeven. Stefanie, I would also like to thank you for your excellent supervision during my fivemonth stay in Frankfurt am Main. You made me feel welcome in your lab in a personal way and always made time for me despite your very busy schedule. Your incredibly elegant way of leading a lab is an inspiration for me. Van al mijn collega s in het AMC wil ik er een paar in het bijzonder uitlichten: Rob, jij hebt mij in de eerste maanden uitstekend op sleeptouw genomen, waardoor ik met mijn promotieproject een vliegende start kon maken. Daarvoor, maar ook voor de gezellige sfeer op het lab, wil ik je van harte bedanken. Joost, bij zo ongeveer elk hoofdstuk uit dit boekje staat jouw naam. Jouw bijdrage aan dit proefschrift is dan ook van zeer grote waarde. Ik vond het altijd erg prettig om met jou samen te werken en dit soort 1-2-tjes, alias Batman en Robin projecten, zijn daardoor met veel succes afgerond. Tevens was het natuurlijk altijd erg gezellig op de vele congressen en cursussen en op jouw promotie(feest) heb ik me ook erg vermaakt als paranimf. 10 Ruud, jouw expertise op zowel moleculair als celbiologisch gebied is van onschatbare waarde voor de hele vakgroep en ik heb daar dan ook menigmaal dankbaar gebruik van gemaakt. Je eigen promotie is ondanks je drukke neventaken lekker vlot gegaan en ik vond het een eer om jouw paranimf te mogen zijn. Jakub, ook jij hebt mij erg geholpen op het lab. Zeker in het eerste jaar, maar ook daarna kon ik altijd bij je terecht voor tips, trucs en academische input (of het nu om fotografie ging of om wetenschap). Mijn dank hiervoor is erg groot. Haje to! Hans vt, bedankt voor je hulp in de eerste jaren van mijn promotie. Jammer dat je weer naar de patiënten toe moest, want het was altijd gezellig praten over wintersport, 195

11 Chapter 10 vrouwen en wetenschap. Binnenkort hoop ik jouw boekje te mogen ontvangen. Anita, op jou kon ik altijd rekenen als mijn cellen doorgezet moesten worden, terwijl ik weer eens ergens anders moest zijn. Ook heb ik jouw oplossingen en chemicaliën meer dan eens geleend. Bovendien kon je mij als het even tegen zat altijd weer opbeuren door bijvoorbeeld even gezellig te gaan lunzen. Dan was er bij de medische biochemie op het AMC nog een andere groep die atherosclerose bestudeerde en daarvan wil ik ook iedereen hartelijk bedanken: Carlie, Thijs, Peter, Mariska, Claudia, Jasper en Maarten. Thijs en Peter: heel erg bedankt voor de collegialiteit, jullie wetenschappelijke input en de gezelligheid in de AIO-kamer, danwel op cursussen en congressen. Binnenkort hebben jullie een soortgelijk boekje af en met de laatste loodjes daarvoor wil ik jullie veel succes wensen. Ook de stagiaires Frank, Mohammed, Arnold en Marja wil ik graag bedanken voor hun inzet en enthousiasme. Dat heeft zeker bijgedragen aan dit proefschrift. Arnold, bedankt dat je mijn paranimf wilt zijn en dat je het volledige proefschrift op spelling en lay-out hebt gecontroleerd. Riekelt, jij ook hartstikke bedankt voor het optreden als paranimf. Alle andere mensen van de afdeling medische biochemie van het AMC: hartelijk bedankt voor de goede sfeer! Mijn nieuwe collega s van de afdeling moleculaire celbiologie en immunologie aan de VU wil ik graag bedanken voor het warme welkom. Vanaf nu zal ik wat meer in het lab dan achter mijn computer te vinden zijn. En uiteraard wil ik ook alle tot nu toe nog niet genoemde co-auteurs van de hoofdstukken in dit proefschrift bedanken voor hun aanzienlijke bijdrages.
