4 OUR mission Het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut te Rome (KNIR) is een Campus of Excellence van Nederlandse universiteiten in het historische en culturele hart van Europa. Het KNIR is het oudste en grootste van de Nederlandse Wetenschappelijke Instituten in het Buitenland (NWIB). Al ruim honderd jaar staat het KNIR voor hoogstaand onderzoek en interdisciplinair onderwijs in de geesteswetenschappen, waarbij het een brugfunctie vervult tussen de Nederlandse universiteiten en de academische wereld in Italië. Het KNIR organiseert cursussen voor studenten van alle niveaus en opleidingen, en het stelt beurzen en onderdak in Rome ter beschikking aan excellente studenten en onderzoekers in verschillende disciplines. Met de eigen statige villa, de unieke bibliotheekcollectie en een rijk programma van congressen, lezingen en culturele activiteiten biedt het KNIR dé wetenschappelijke toegang tot de Eeuwige Stad waar Nederlandse studenten en onderzoekers zich kunnen laven aan grensoverschrijdende perspectieven. 5 Il Reale Istituto Neerlandese a Roma (KNIR) è un centro di studi umanistici dal profilo marcatamente interdisciplinare, attivo negli ambiti della ricerca e dell insegnamento. Come più grande e antica istituzione accademica olandese all estero, il KNIR vanta una lunga tradizione di scambi internazionali, fungendo da anello di congiunzione tra le università dei Paesi Bassi e gli atenei italiani. L istituto organizza corsi per studenti meritevoli a tutti i livelli e offre alloggio e borse di studio a studiosi e ricercatori in una varietà di discipline. Grazie alla biblioteca specializzata e al dinamico programma di conferenze ed eventi culturali, il KNIR apre ai Paesi Bassi le porte della Città Eterna. The Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) is a center of expertise in the humanities with a strong profile of interdisciplinary research and teaching. The largest and oldest Dutch academic institution abroad, the KNIR upholds a longstanding tradition of international exchange, acting as a liaison between Dutch universities and academic institutions in Italy. The KNIR organizes courses for outstanding students and offers residence and scholarships to both beginning and advanced researchers in a variety of disciplines. With its specialized library and dynamic program of academic conferences and cultural events, the KNIR is the Dutch gateway to the Eternal City.

6 WHAT WE OFFER Het KNIR biedt een unieke wetenschappelijke omgeving waarin studenten en onderzoekers van Nederlandse universiteiten kunnen excelleren in een bij uitstek interdisciplinaire en internationale context. De academische stafleden vertegenwoordigen de disciplines oudheid, kunstgeschiedenis, geschiedenis en erfgoedstudies, die van oudsher de kerndisciplines van het Instituut vormen. De stafleden begeleiden studenten en promovendi die het KNIR bezoeken en verzorgen talrijke cursussen, excursies, stages, workshops, summer schools en master classes. Onderwijs Het Instituut biedt excellente studenten een academisch curriculum dat nauw aansluit bij dat van de deelnemende universiteiten. Na een eerste kennismaking in de bachelorfase volgt een verdiepingsmodule in de graduate fase, daarna een tutorial ten behoeve van individueel onderzoek en tot slot een traineeship dat de brug slaat tussen wetenschap en maatschappij. Onderzoek Het KNIR faciliteert en begeleidt Nederlands onderzoek in Italië en in het bijzonder in Rome; het bevordert en versterkt de wetenschappelijke contacten tussen Nederland, Italië en de internationale academische gemeenschap. Het KNIR verricht ook eigen onderzoek op het gebied van de kerndisciplines, met een groeiende aandacht voor interdisciplinaire samenwerking en openheid naar wetenschapsgebieden buiten de humaniora.

7 Lopende KNIR projecten: Hadrianvs Challenging Testaccio Mapping the Via Appia Beyond Colonization Landscapes of Early Roman Colonization Salento Isthmus Republican Empire Beurzen Ten behoeve van onderzoek op het terrein van de geesteswetenschappen verstrekt het KNIR beurzen voor een verblijf te Rome. Deze beurzen zijn in het bijzonder bestemd voor studenten in de masterfase van hun studie, voor aspirant promovendi en postdocs, en voor promovendi en postdocs die verbonden zijn aan één van de zes universiteiten die deelnemen aan het KNIR. Evenementen Het Instituut is een erkend internationaal podium voor wetenschappelijke bijeenkomsten en draagt bij aan de verbreiding van de Nederlandse cultuur door middel van culturele manifestaties, zoals boekpresentaties of concerten, veelal georganiseerd in samenwerking met partners. Verblijf Het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut te Rome is gevestigd in een statige villa gelegen aan de rand van het Romeinse stadspark Villa Borghese. Het KNIR biedt Nederlandse studenten en onderzoekers individuen en groepen mogelijkheden voor een studieverblijf voor korte of langere tijd. De bibliotheek van het KNIR is voor hen dag en nacht open en biedt een ideale studieplek. Il personale assiste gli studenti e i dottorandi ospitati dal KNIR e organizza numerosi corsi, visite guidate, stage, workshop, summer schools e master classes. Insegnamento L Istituto offre agli studenti meritevoli un curriculum accademico che ben si armonizza al piano di studi delle università partecipanti. A una prima fase esplorativa (bachelor) seguono un modulo di approfondimento (graduate), un tutorial mirato alla ricerca individuale e, infine, un tirocinio (traineeship) che fa da ponte tra ricerca e società. Ricerca Il KNIR agevola e accompagna la ricerca accademica olandese in Italia e a Roma in particolare; promuove e rafforza i contatti scientifici tra Paesi Bassi, Italia e la comunità accademica internazionale. Inoltre, lo stesso personale del KNIR svolge attività di ricerca nell ambito delle discipline chiave dell Istituto, con un attenzione sempre maggiore alla cooperazione interdisciplinare e una crescente apertura ai settori scientifici estranei alle scienze umanistiche. 9 Soggiorno Il Reale Istituto Neerlandese a Roma ha sede presso una splendida villa alle soglie del parco cittadino di Villa Borghese. Il KNIR offre a studenti e ricercatori olandesi, singoli o in gruppo, la possibilità di usufruire di soggiorni di studio di breve o più lunga durata. Per loro la biblioteca dell Istituto luogo di studio ideale è sempre aperta. Borse di studio A sostegno della ricerca in ambito umanistico, il KNIR offre borse per soggiorni di studio a Roma. Le borse sono destinate, in particolare, a studenti iscritti a un corso di laurea magistrale, (aspiranti) dottorandi e dottori di ricerca facenti capo a una delle sei università che partecipano al KNIR. 10 The KNIR offers a unique academic environment in which students and researchers from Dutch universities can excel in an international interdisciplinary setting. The scientific staff of the KNIR represents the Institute s traditional core disciplines: archaeology, art history, history and heritage studies. The staff guides and assists the undergraduate and graduate students who visit the KNIR and provides a range of courses, excursions, internships, workshops, summer schools and master classes. Teaching The KNIR offers outstanding students an academic curriculum that complements the programs of the participating universities. The introductory program for undergraduates is followed by an in-depth module for graduate students, a tutorial on how to conduct individual research and finally the Institute is offering a traineeship that bridges the gap between academia and society. Research The KNIR facilitates and supervises Dutch research in Italy, and in Rome in particular, fostering and encouraging contact between research communities in the Netherlands, Italy and the international academic community. The KNIR also conducts its own research in the core disciplines, with a growing focus on interdisciplinary cooperation and openness to areas of scholarship outside the humanities. 11 Current KNIR projects: Hadrianvs Challenging Testaccio Mapping the Via Appia Beyond Colonization Landscapes of Early Roman Colonization Salento Isthmus Republican Empire Accommodation The Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome is housed in a stately villa on the edge of Rome s Villa Borghese park. The Institute offers accommodation to Dutch students and researchers individuals and groups for short study trips and longer stays. The KNIR library is always open to guests of the Institute and is an ideal place to study. Scholarships The KNIR awards scholarships for research in the humanities in Rome. These scholarships are available to Master s students, aspiring PhD students and postdocs, and PhD students and postdocs who are affiliated with one of the six universities associated with the KNIR. Events The Institute is a recognized international venue for scientific conferences and symposia, and promotes Dutch culture by hosting events such as book presentations and concerts, often organized in cooperation with partners.
