3 Het signaal In 2010 was heel duidelijk het signaal Social, Mobile, Global. De komst van de tablet en Ipad zou de wereld veranderen, was toen het devies. Ongeveer 4 maanden later zou niemand in Nederland dit meer tegenspreken. We zijn massaal aan de nieuwe devices gegaan en zien dat de tablet, zowel aan de consumentenkant als in het bedrijfsleven, niet meer weg te denken is. Dit jaar staat in het teken van talent en spirit. Iedere sessie die de CIO s hebben bijgewoond ging over talent of het zoeken naar talent. Is er een groot te kort aan talent. Nee, dat nog niet, maar het wordt wel schaars en de aanwas is onvoldoende om de vraag aan nieuwe ontwikkelingen te kunnen bijbenen. Geen techniek? Zeker Big Data. De cijfers van unstructured data liegen er niet om. 5% gestructureerd in informatiesystemen zoals wij die kennen. Met ongeveer 5 biljoen devices en sensoren is de opslag van ongestructureerde data niet meer te stoppen. Business Analytics is het tover woord. Kortom nog sneller verwerking en opslag is nodig om Big Data aan te kunnen. Hier is de markt en natuurlijk Oracle druk mee bezig. Conservatieve programma s helpen niet om te komen tot echte innovatie. Out-of-the-Box denken is het credo (overigens leuk restaurant in San Francisco; zie verder in het verslag) en je moet talent hebben om de concurrentie voor te blijven. Of het nu startup s zijn, op hoge leeftijd met emeritus zijnde hoogleraren, de inspiratie spat eraf. De kunst van story telling zit in het bloed van deze gedreven mensen. Ze nemen je volledig mee in hun wereld. Of het nu Salim Ismail ( Singulerity University), Pattie Maes( MIT Media Lab), Bart Decrem (Taplous Walt Disney), Safra Catz (Oracle), Richard L. Nolan (Harvard), Thomas Kurian (Oracle), Mark Gorenberg (Hummer Winblad), George Westerman (Harvard) of één van de andere sprekers, ze ging er volledig voor om 22 CIO s uit de Benelux te woord te staan. De verhalen waren enerverend. Ieder op zijn/haar domein. Nieuwe ontwikkelingen zijn natuurlijk big data, social, mobile en cloud. Echter in tegenstelling tot afgelopen jaar ging naar het laatste thema geen belangstelling meer uit. Mobile blijft hot, cloud is er gewoon. Social is eigenlijk al min of meer geïntegreerd en geaccepteerd in de bedrijfsprocessen. Dit bleek ook wel uit de lancering van Oracle s Fusion en de public cloud oplossing. De social media aspecten zoals facebook, linkedin, twitter en yelp doen gewoon mee in het productie proces. De PC is over. Daar was iedereen het wel over eens. Het gevecht om arbeid capaciteit en talent is begonnen. De schaarste neemt over de gehele linie toe. De bedragen die voor nieuwe talenten worden neergeteld is soms enorm. De meeste bedrijven hebben forse bonussystemen voor werving. Opleiding en bijblijven is een must. De Universiteiten en de bedrijven geven aan dat een papiertje van 10 jaar geleden niet betekent dat je voor eeuwig op het pluche kan zitten. Nee, permanente educatie, CxO programma s zorgen dat de business en IT-manager bij blijven in de laatste ontwikkelingen. Het gaat niet alleen meer om techniek, maar om wat jij kan bijdragen aan de verbetering van de economie of de business van morgen. Veel lees plezier. Bob van Graft Pagina 3

6 Peter Hinssen CIO Open Innovation Tour 2011 Recommendation of this Tour The Money Making CIO Perhaps we sometimes feel a little nostalgia for the old days of IT. The days when the CIO wasn't called the CIO yet, but when EDP managers ruled the datacenter. Remember when we still had the datacenters? God, that seems like a long time ago. Remember the days when users didn't know anything about computers? Remember the constant confusion we could create in our organizations whenever we would introduce something new? And remember how much the users NEEDED us, begged us to help them, because we were the only ones who could command that monster in the basement. That seems like ages ago. Last century. Today, our world looks very different. Today the users are bringing in the new technology, the new tablets, smartphones and apps. And we have difficulty in catching up with the users. We have difficulty in maintaining relevance in our organizations, and we constantly have to do our very best to keep up. No wonder we feel a little nostalgic for the past. Biography of Peter Peter Hinssen is co-founder of Across Group and CEO of Across Technology. An entrepreneur, lecturer and writer, he is also the former chairman of Porthus and has been an Entrepreneur in Residence with McKinsey & Company. In the Nineties, Peter Hinssen was founder and CEO at e-com Interactive, a leading Internet consultancy firm, where he implemented some of the first large-scale Internet and e-commerce projects in Europe. Peter is currently involved as a coach to executives to develop future innovation perspectives, and is a board advisor on subjects related to innovation and IT. He develops executive education workshops and awareness sessions to bridge business challenges with IT solutions, and to leverage the innovation potential of IT. He lectures on IT Strategy and Technology & Organization future challenges at various business schools in Europe such as London Business School (UK) and TiasNimbas Business School (Netherlands), and is a visiting faculty at Antwerp Management School (Belgium). Peter is a passionate keynote speaker frequently welcomed at Global CIO forums and conferences around the world. Peter's first book "Business/IT Fusion" (2008) has recently been reprinted and over 5000 copies have been sold. The book provides a roadmap for the journey to completely rethink and radically transform IT. In his second book "The New Normal" (2010), Peter explains the New Normal concept an idea which suggests we are now halfway in the digital revolution. He prepares the reader for the future: we have already gone through a lot of changes but what lies ahead will be even more challenging. I recently heard Dale Kutnick, one of the Gartner leaders and an industry veteran for more than 30 years talk about the 'Lose List'. He said that CIO's today should make two lists: The 'Score List' on which you write down all the projects that IT could do that would 'score' with the business, and the 'Lose List' where we should write down all those projects where 'we could only lose'. I've done this exercise with quite a few CIO's and the results are extremely surprising: most CIO's come up with an extremely long inventory of projects that fit in the 'Lose List'. That's depressing enough. But when we look at the projects that are on the 'Score List' (like for example Social Media Intelligence, or Mobile Apps to name a few), most CIO's realize that they don't have the right skills and competencies in their IT department to actually successfully implement those 'Score List' projects. 7 Not Good. Last year we had an amazing trip to Silicon Valley. We were inspired by Stanford, energized by the visits to Google, ebay and Facebook, and sparked and galvanized by the atmosphere of the place. But many of us went back to our IT departments and realized that it wasn't just about 'innovation', and it certainly wasn't just about 'technology innovation' any more: it is BUSINESS innovation that matters. In today's world, the CIO will become irrelevant in the organization if the CIO can't become an integral part of the value creation of our companies. If we just keep focusing on cost, and efficiency, then we will see our impact perish. But if we become crucial in the value dialog, than we can generate a new leash on life for the IT department, and the CIO. We call this next generation CIO the 'Money Making CIO'. The 'Money Making CIO' isn't just there to run the IT infrastructure, and develop the IT application landscape. The 'Money Making CIO' is there to leverage technology for their companies to focus on innovation. To help their companies win in the marketplace. To help their organizations become more competitive. To help our companies become winners in business innovation. So what are the characteristics of the 'Money Making CIO'? That's exactly what we want to find out with this second version of the tour. This time, we will visit not only Silicon Valley, but on our way back to Europe, we will visit the Boston area as well. Where the focus of the Silicon Valley visit is still on innovation, the stopover in Boston will focus primarily on the value creation aspect of IT, and focus on business innovation. In Silicon Valley we want to understand what's 'hot'. We will start by revisiting the Venture Capital firm of Hummer Winblad, where the managing partner Mark Gorenberg will give us a 'state of the union' on the 'buzz' in Silicon Valley: what is upcoming, what is hot, and what are the 'must-know' technologies everyone is talking about. Mark will also introduce one of his startups, Karmasphere, who focus on 'Big Data Analytics on Hadoop'. Last year we heard 'Hadoop' for the first time, this year the startups are in the Valley, next year this will become mainstream technology. Then we will visit VISA. VISA is not a Silicon Valley startup, but one of the established players in the financial services field, headquartered in San Francisco. But where the credit card business of VISA hardly changed over the last twenty years, suddenly the world of finance is being shaken up by technological innovation. Paypal is snapping at their heels, Google launches the Google Wallet (in cooperation with MasterCard). All of a sudden, it's NOT about technological innovation, but it's about business innovation. At VISA we want to understand how technology is reshaping the world of finance, how business innovation, value creation and technological innovation go hand in hand, and what the role of the CIO is in all of this? Next stop is Twitter. Perhaps the most famous startup in San Francisco, with 200 million users who generate 65 million tweets a day. It is sometimes described as the "SMS of the Internet". But how will they make money? How will they turn their technological innovation into real value? What is the business model behind twitter, and when will they show their value creation potential? 8 One of the hottest startups in Silicon Valley is LinkedIn. Everyone uses LinkedIn, and it has grown exponentially in the last couple of years to become one of the largest business communities. Recently, the IPO of LinkedIn was hugely successful, and has shown that social media is not just fun, but has become a value creating concept as well. But how does LinkedIn do that? How does LinkedIn create value from their online community? We will visit LinkedIn, one of the big hotshots of the Valley, and not talk about technology, but about business model innovation. In the late afternoon, we will visit Disney, and meet Bart Decrem, the CEO of Tapulous. Originally from Belgium, he now lives and works in Silicon Valley. Bart moved to the US to study law at Stanford University. In 1999, Bart co-founded Eazel, an open source Linux desktop start-up. Eazel failed, and shut down in In 2003, Bart helped run Mozilla, and coordinated the launch of Firefox. In 2008, Bart helped found Tapulous, one of the leading iphone companies, which was acquired by Disney in He now runs Disney's interactive and mobile division, DisneyMobile, based in San Francisco. But how does Disney do that? How can a large, and established player like Disney acquire a small Silicon Valley startup, and leverage the innovation of the small venture in the Big Disney? How can you take the technological innovation of the startup, and turn that into the real value creation of the large company? In the evening, we will spend the time with Susan Cramm. A former CFO and CIO, she is an expert on IT leadership. She is the author of '8 Things We Hate About IT', and writes the Harvard Business Review blog on IT management. Susan spends her time with CIO's to help them in their progression from cost-focus towards value-creation. Silicon Valley is an area that inspires. It tickles our technological roots, and gets us excited about the 'New New thing'. Boston is different. Boston is more down to earth, more business, more rooted in reality. The first visit to Boston is Harvard. Harvard Business School will welcome us, and Richard Nolan will talk to us about the '21st century corporation'. What challenges will your company face in the coming years, and what can your role be in all of this? Richard Nolan has been studying the field of IT management for many years, and is the author of "The Adventures of an IT Leader". Then Harvey Koeppel, Executive Director of the Center for CIO Leadership, will discuss his views on the next generation CIO. Harvey was the CIO of Citigroup, and now runs the Center for CIO Leadership. He will match the vision of Richard Nolan with the skills and competencies necessary for the next generation CIO to focus on value creation. Harvard is a stimulating setting to contemplate on business, on value, and on the future. But when it comes to the technological view on the future, there isn't a better place than the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. And the hottest place at MIT is the MIT Media Lab. Devoted to research projects at the convergence of design, multimedia and technology, the MIT Media Lab was founded by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte. Today, one of the stars of the MIT Media Lab is Professor Pattie Maes. Pattie was born and raised in Belgium, but has been at MIT for more than 20 years. She became world famous with her 'Sixth Sense' demo on TED. TIME selected her as a member of the Cyber-Elite (the top 50 technological pioneers of the high-tech world), and the World Economic Forum honored her with the title Global Leader for Tomorrow. Pattie will give us a tour of the MIT Media Lab, and talk about her views on marrying technology and business innovation. Bob van Graft Pagina 8

9 Zondag 2 oktober 2011 CIO Open Innovation Tour 2011 Start van nieuwe CIO Innovation Tour. Zondag 2 oktober 2011 om 6.15 vertrokken uit Naaldwijk. Om 7.00 uur op Schiphol. Rustig inchecken, door douane en een kop koffie. Vervolgens op tijd naar de gate. Het is een vol vliegtuig, dus op tijd binnen. Met 15 min delay vertrokken om naar sfo. Baby aan boord Keurig op tijd aangekomen in San Francisco. Mooi rustig weer. Vanaf vliegveld naar het hotel en direct al weer diverse telefoontjes. Of ik er al ben. Het ontvangstcomité staat al te wachten. Eerst even korte verkenning vanaf het hotel richting het Oracle event en positie bepalen. We weten de weg weer. Daarna met Bram de Klerck naar het Moscone voor het ophalen van de batch. Het is ontzettend druk. Toch verloopt de registratie voorspoedig. Na intake de tas halen met de overige informatie voor de komende dagen. Nu op naar de openingsspeech van Larry Ellisson bezoekers De opening begint met een reeks van cijfers over het event. Wat bij blijft is het aantal bezoekers in deze week mensen zullen het grootste event in de wereld bezoeken. Een ongekend aantal. Verder heeft Oracle er voor gezorgd dat het spektakel ook online is te volgen via een eigen kanaal op youtube ( Verder zijn er natuurlijk de diverse apps van Oracle te downloaden vanuit itunes, Andorid en RIM/BB marktplaatsen. Uiteraard is de website van Oracle Open World ook voorzien van alle belangrijke linken, ( Kortom we zijn digitaal volledig aanwezig. Uiteraard kregen we eerst de diverse huldigingen van organisaties die mooie Oracle projecten hadden uitgevoerd. De bijbehorende CIO s en CEO s werden daarbij in het zonnetje gezet. Staat in ieder geval leuk op je (project) CV. Wie weet verdient ons Leonardo project ook zo n kans. Tot slot komt ook nog de voorzitter van de GIANTS op het podium. Dat Oracle een sponsor is van vele sportevenementen, mag bekend zijn. Niet alleen de autosport, zeilen maar ook American Footbal behoort tot de talrijke organisaties en activiteiten die de belangstelling hebben van Larry Ellison zelf. De voorzitter reikt hem een ring uit, als dank voor zijn inzet. Keynote Larry Ellison Dan is de grote man zelf aan de beurt om te vertellen wat de nieuwe ontwikkelingen zijn. De eerste plaat geeft het al aan. We beat IBM, we zijn goedkoper en sneller en de ontwikkelingen op hardware gaan onverminderd voort. In diverse slides legt Ellison uit wat de ontwikkeling van de SUN tak heeft uitgevoerd met het hardware segment. De cijfers vliegen om je oren. Bob van Graft Pagina 9

10 Het is allemaal veel sneller en beter geworden dan we ooit hadden mogen dromen. Vervolgens komt de belangrijkste technisch hardware announcement. De positionering van de nieuwe SPARC T4 Super Cluster. Hiermee komt Oracle de SUN aanhang tegenmoet en zorgt ook voor een krachtige eenheid binnen de processing unit. Bob van Graft Pagina 10

11 Later op de avond was er nog een diner met een vertegenwoordiging van het Ministerie van Veiligheid en Justitie en Oracle medewerkers. Zo kwam een einde aan een lange dag, waarin al weer de eerste positieve indrukken en gesprekken hadden plaatsgevonden. Dat zal nog wat worden in de komende dagen! Maandag 3 oktober 2011 Een dag met een aantal speciale ontmoetingen en sessies. Als eerste verkennen we het Moscone center en kijken bij de verschillende leveranciers wat zij te bieden hebben. De applicences op de Oracle suite zijn natuurlijk enorm. Veel leveranciers zijn related aan de brede Oracle product suite. Zo kom je partijen tegen die alles op gebied van hardware uitvoeren, maar ook het beheer van de hardware omgevingen. Verder zijn er talloze bedrijven die op de software stack hun aansluiting vinden. Het onderwerp dashboard, BPM, Projectmanagement en analitics kennen een verscheidenheid aan mogelijkheden en oplossingen. Ook de enorme bookstore laat zien dat software- en hardware ontwikkelingen ook in de geschreven media nog lang niet obsolete zijn. Een kleine impressie van de mensenmassa. Bob van Graft Pagina 11

12 Ronde tafel conferentie Veiligheid en Justitie In de middag was er een sessie, waarbij vertegenwoordigers van Justitie, Rechtspraak, Openbaar Ministerie en de Politie uit diverse landen waren uitgenodigd. Een gezelschap van ongeveer 40 mensen zat in de zaal. Vanuit Oracle werden diverse thema s benoemd die actueel waren. De vragen werden gesteld aan een expertteam vanuit het veld, terwijl de mensen aan tafel een reactie konden geven op de stellingen of de uitkomst van eerdere discussies. Onder de panelleden bevond zich PG Henk van Brummen van de Raad voor de Rechtspraak. Belangrijke punten die langs kwamen, waren onder andere de rol van de centrale organisatie (departement) versus de autonomie van de verschillende uitvoerende onderdelen, zoals Politie, OM of Rechtspraak. Wordt een rol gezien als Goal Keeper of meer van facilitiator. Ook het aspect data kwam uitgebreid aan bod. Data of informatie moet actueel, betrouwbaar en toegankelijk zijn. Gesteld wordt dat data van de wieg tot het graf beschikbaar moet zijn. Verder werd er ook nog gediscussieerd over de global trends in data information. Belangrijke trends die langs kwamen, waren: Sharing informatie (across borders) Named standards o Product: sourceforce.net Court system Role based system Skills (and the problems to keep them) o Allocation from resources o Education Tooling, such as C.A.M Instant reporting o PLE configured o Bridged for apps identity and access management o credentials such as ICANN o MAP ICANN to SCANN Case management o Across borders o Across organizations and people Ook was er een goede discussie over infrastructuurmanagement en licenties. De vraag uit het publiek was: wie gaat er voor de kleine landen betalen om toch te voldoen aan de voorwaarde van deelname in het bestrijden van bijvoorbeeld fraude, criminaliteit of cybersecurity. Veel landen willen wel, maar kunnen het gewoon niet betalen. Ook Oracle werd gevraagd om hier over na te denken. Tot slot werd er nog uitgebreid stil gestaan bij de ontwikkelingen van biometrie. Zowel de technische kant als de politieke en financiële kant werd belicht. Alle sprekers waren het er over eens dat biometrics veel belangrijker gaat worden in het systeem van veiligheid, handhaving en berechting. De stappen die in de technologie worden gezet zijn momenteel enorm. Oplossingen zoals Oracle deze momenteel biedt helpen onze organisaties grote stappen voorwaarts. Ook hier geldt weer de wet van de remmende voorsprong. Een aantal organisaties was hier al mee bezig, maar de nieuwe ontwikkelingen gaan zo snel dat het zowel financieel als organisatorisch niet bij te houden is. Ook het ontberen van talent werd gezien als een groot issue. Bob van Graft Pagina 12

13 Meeting Loren Mahon CIO Open Innovation Tour 2011 Vanuit Oracle was geregeld dat Bram de Klerk en Bob van Graft een gesprek hadden met Loren Mahon. Onderwerp was Transforming Your Business the Oracle Way. Het werd een zeer onderhoudend en goed gesprek. Loren was erg open om aan te geven hoe de veranderingen binnen Oracle in de afgelopen jaren hadden plaatsgevonden. In de afgelopen jaren was de mantra van Oracle niet veranderd. Dat kon met zoveel overnames niet goed gaan. De nieuwe weg werd: Better; Faster and Cheaper. Business Engineering at Oracle 4 zeer belangrijke pijlers liggen als grondslag onder deze verandering From To Simplify Old Way Best Way Standardize Many Ways One Way Centralize Many Locations Few Locations Automate Manual Automated. Simplify (old method) Een basis principe binnen Oracle. Haal zoveel mogelijk extra stappen uit het proces. Maak het eenvoudig. Het reduceren van processtappen levert in de uitvoering 1) reductie van lasten en 2) verbeteringen van de slagvaardigheid van de organisatie op. Sandardize (one best Global Process) Maak het proces zo dat het over de gehele organisatie op dezelfde manier is uit te voeren en wijs proces eigenaars aan. Zij zijn de gatekeepers en bewaken of er niet weer extra zaken (old method) bij komen. Dit betekent het beleggen van de proces eigenaars op het hoogste niveau met mandaat. Centralize (date, Processes, Systems and Decisions) Door het doorlopen van bovenstaande processtappen, is het ook veel eenvoudiger om te centraliseren. Deze stap levert de meeste voordelen op. Dit is ook de zwaarste stap omdat veel mensen zaken moeten loslaten. Door het goed invoeren van proces owners, is ook het besturingsmodel heel eenvoudig. De proces eigenaars beslissen HOE het moet gebeuren. Ook de invoering van Shared Services gebeurt in dit proces. Het model biedt dan een optimale mogelijkheid voor controling the cost ; increase Customer Satisfaction by improving Service Levels en het forceren van standaards. Automate Processes Als laatste stap in dit proces komt het automatiseren.belangrijke punten hierbij zijn: Use an integrated application architecture Integrate systems enterprise-wide Reduce paper flow with employee self-service Organize around end-to-end processes Reduce process complexity De uitkomsten van deze stappen leiden tot een unified data model ; lower costs and fewer errors. Tot slot is de outcome: better customer service, strong internal controls and easier compliance efforts and fast integration of new acquisitions Bob van Graft Pagina 13

14 Belangrijkste lessen uit deze verandering: Executive level support Organize around end to end process Consolidate and simplify as much as possible Automate and standardize business processes Move to a shared service model Implement self service everywhere. Zoals aangegeven was het een zeer informatief en interessant gesprek, waaruit bleek dat wij als Veiligheid en Justitie ook op de goede weg zitten. Kijkende naar de complexiteit en het integraal management van MINVenJ, zijn de uitgangspunten voor deze exercitie anders. Kortom bij Oracle zeer strak geregeld en waarbij we hier zeker punten van kunnen overnemen. Na ruim 50 minuten afscheid genomen van Loran. Bob van Graft Pagina 14

15 Start CIO Innovation Tour CIO Open Innovation Tour 2011 Maandagavond was het verzamelen in de lobby van het Palace hotel. Bijna alle deelnemers waren present. Een enkeling zou later aansluiten. We werden naar restaurant Credo gebracht voor een eerste kennismaking, of voor sommigen een hernieuwde kennismaken. Jan Ronse, directeur Oracle Benelux, opende de avond met een warm welkom aan alle deelnemers van de Open Innovation Tour (#OIT11). Jan gaf namens Oracle aan hoe verheugd zij waren met de aanwezige deelnemers. Jan blikte terug op de CIO Innovation Tour van 2010, het succes van deze tour en de wijze waarop deelnemers enthousiast hadden gereageerd om in te schrijven voor de tour van Als eerste bedankte hij Yvonne Bregman en Hanneke van Leeuwen die wederom al het voorwerk van deze tour voor hun rekening hadden genomen. Vervolgens ging hij kort in op het programma van de komende dagen. Een vol en intensief programma die zeker voor de deelnemers weer de nodige inspiratie zou brengen. Toen werd het tijd om de deelnemers kennis met elkaar te laten maken. tour van 2010 kwamen natuurlijk ook direct de verhalen los. Door een aantal maal van tafel/groep te wisselen (zo na 15 minuten) hadden alle deelnemers al bijna in de eerste keer contact met elkaar gehad. Dit jaar was de deelname vanuit België en Luxemburg iets groter. Vervolgens zijn we aan tafel gegaan. Ook daar ontstonden direct levendige discussies. Het politieke klimaat in zowel Nederland als België geeft voldoende aanleiding tot gesprekken, maar ook de financiële crisis en de consequenties in de verschillende branches bracht voldoende gesprekstof teweeg. De opzet was om aan de hand van een aantal kaartjes het ijs te breken tussen de deelnemers. Al snel ontstonden er gezellige- en open gesprekken tussen de verschillende deelnemers. Vragen als waarom deze tour, hoe zou je jezelf omschrijven, wat is je favoriete boek of muziek tot aan zou je een liedje willen zingen gaf voldoende stof tot gesprek. 16 Ook de technologische ontwikkelingen passeerde de revue, mede gelet op het feit dat reeds een aantal deelnemers de speech van Larry Ellisson hadden gehoord (en dingen die ze gemist hadden). Ook de ruimte die geboekt was, was speciaal bedoeld om inspiratie op te doen. Op de wanden waren zeer veel spreuken te lezen. Veel met een knipoog, maar ook hele bijzondere, geschreven door bijzondere mensen. Als VC is Mark zeer goed op de hoogte van alle ontwikkelingen in de markt. Een Venture Capatalist (VC) wordt door startups niet alleen pgebruikt om roducten gefinancieerd te krijgen, maar ookvoor de contacten. Bij Mark gaat het niet alleen om geld, maar ook om betrokkenheid van de mensen en de uiteindelijke resultaten van de producten. ( Mark laat zien hoe de investeringswereld er uit ziet. 40% van investeringsgeld wordt ingezet in Silicon Valley. Software en Media doen daarvan 41%. De ontwikkelingen in de IT gaan met name over Social, Mobile and Cloud. De grootste ontwikkeling zit in mobile devices en sensors. Zo n 5 Biljoen devices/sensors zorgen voor een enorme dataload.. De offload van data brengt een gehele nieuwe dimensie met zich mee. Mark geeft aan dat de PC-markt eindig is. Bij 2020, there will be 50 billion connecte devices, all producing data. Last year exabytes of data were created, and it s doubling every 14 months. Every company will have a big data strategy and deploy some from of analytics. #2 New Software, Hardware Architectures No SQL, New SQL and flash memory. This is the first significant challenge to SQL dominance in 30 years, and it will make databases a growth area again. Hadoop is emerging as a leader in No SQL databases. MapReduce is one of the new techniques for analyzing non-transaction optimized databases. #3 Real-Time Analysis To be current and even predictive, data has to be assessed in real time. By 2008 Omniture was already analyzing more than 1 trillion transactions per quarter running on a real-time network of about open-source-based servers. Large retailers were running minute campaigns, side by side with different sites, to determine which created the besteresults to use in campaigns. It was a concept unavailable even a couple of years before. #4 The Adaptive Web The adaptive Web is the next generation of targeting. Wisdom of the crowds is used to help create sites for each individual customer. Clicks, conversion and engagements are being trumped by packges that can understand the intent of those engagements. Baynote is a company that observes engagement patterns among like-minded individuals to understand user intent to automatically adapt the online experience to the individual. Baynote s slogan is stop analyzing. Start adapting. #5 Verticals, Specialization and Integration Verticals and specialization are fostering new algorithm development for analytics. IBM in 2009 bought SPSS and announced a new vertical strategy for analytics. Algorithms and techniques increase their value in vertical domains. Signal Demand has improved predictive analytics for commodity businesses, and matches supply- and demand-site data to guide their customers to better pricing and product mixes. Star Analytics, focuses on financial services and automates both the workflow and integration of all the other business intelligence products to create enterprise financial pictures. #6 Social Marketing Social marketing is letting companies run campaigns that include social sites. The best influencers can greatly expand the qualified prospect list and increase the funnel mid-campaign. Mesuring return on investment is key. 18 #7 Going Beyond the Web Media areas beyond the Web applications are improving their effectiveness with analytics. AceMetrix delivers ondemand television advertising analytics. The company has patents pending that measure the creative effectiveness of in-market TV advertising and lets the benchmark against existing ads from competitors. Klip, combines analytics and targeted rewards to increase game use. #8 Real-Time Dashboards Hummer Winblad is seeing new companies that gather real-time data from around the organization and simplify it to create easily customizable simple-to-read dashboards that executives can monitor in real time. #9 Visualization Deloitte sees visualization as the top tech trend of Visualizations are growing at a pace reminiscent of the early days of online video. There were 10 million viewers of visualizations in That is expected to grow to 40 million by next year. Publishers post eight infographics a week now, compared with tow days a week last year. #10 Unstructured Data Understanding and qualifying unstructured data is important. HW is seeing more companies proposing algorithms to discover intelligence in unstructured content and analysze it to understand sentiment from s to articles to analyst reports. IBM Watson is the new gold standard in contextual analysis. Hadoop Mark Gorenberg had Martin Hall van Karmasphere meegenomen. Vorig jaar tijdens de #OIT10 vertelde Mark al over Karmasphere en de ontwikkelingen rond Big Data.. Hier zie je dus de kracht van een VC. Zij zien ontwikkelingen sneller. Big Data was de topic van het Oracle Open World congres, maar ook tijdens de CIO Innovation Tour Op deze eerste dag werden we al geconfronteerd met de eerste groeicijfers. Tevens leerden we al weer de nieuwe eenheid van databytes kennen. Was het in 2010 nog Exabytes, voor 2011 is de term Yottabytes al geïntroduceerd en Zettabytes gepasseerd. Al deze data ontwikkelen hebben natuurlijk een enorme invloed op ons storage gebruik. In de komende jaren wordt daar ook een exponentiele groei in verwacht. Daarnaast verandert het type data ook. Waar het tot op heden met name om gestructureerde data ging, is door de komst van alle mobile devices en de miljoenen sensoren een zeer grote verandering gekomen. Bob van Graft Pagina 18

19 De hoeveelheid ongestructureerde data zal in de komende 3 tot 4 jaar enorm toenemen. De verwachting is dat 5% nog maar gestructureerd zal zijn, dus data die vanuit traditionele informatiesystemen afkomstig zal zijn en de overige data ongestructureerd ( s, foto s, video s etc.) Dit is de reden dat ook alle zoekalgoritme moeten worden aangepast. Hier wordt dan ook de meeste innovatie en ontwikkelingen in verwacht. Zoals reeds eerder is aangegeven is er een wedloop om de systemen die straks al deze ongestructureerde data kunnen verwerken. Hadoop is één van de oplossingen die momenteel als zeer sterk in deze omgeving van ongestructureerde data wordt gebruikt. Het voordeel is dat het volledig gesteund wordt door de Open Source community. Hiermee krijgt het de kracht van vrijheid van ontwikkelingen. Naar verwachting zal straks één van de grote bedrijven, zoals Oracle, IBM, HDS of andere een claim gaan liggen op deze ontwikkeling. Hadoop Use Case, dus richtingen die gebruikt kunnen worden vanuit deze nieuwe filosofie: Operations o Reduce costs using machine, RFID and event data; Important for: Business process optimization, Manufacturing optimization and quality control and assurance. Marketing, Sales and Customer Support o Increase revenues by analyzing customer and machine behavior; Important for: Brand sentiment analysis, Advertising, Improved customer support and Up-selling and crossselling. Risk Management o Decrease exposure with trend and pattern analysis; Important for Risk analysis and Fraud detection. 20 Singularity University NASA Ames Reseach Park - Moffet Field Op weg naar een hele nieuwe wereld. De Singularity University is er niet één met een historie. Eigenlijk bestaat deze universiteit nog maar een paar jaar en is hij opgericht met een heel andere doelstelling dan een normale universiteit. Hier wordt verwacht om buiten de bestaande kaders te denken. Als member van deze University wil je de wereld verbeteren. Hier worden grote vraagstukken, zoals voedsel en watertekort, economische crisis, medische problemen aangepakt. Ze bestaat nog maar drie jaar en heeft in die korte tijd een korps van opinieleiders verzameld die elk in hun gebied de beste denkers ter wereld zijn. Er zitten Nobelprijswinnaars tussen, ondernemers, visionaire denkers, maar ze hebben één ding gemeen: ze denken minstens 25 jaar vooruit. Het zal een bijzondere ervaring worden om hier te mogen spreken met zeer bevlogen docenten. De locatie is al heel bijzonder, namelijk een plaats waar vroeger de grootste hete luchtballonnen (Zeplins) werden opgeborgen. Verder is dit één van de domeinen van de NASA en hebben hier grote geleerden gewerkt. Singularity University 1 is opgericht door Ray Kurzweil ( Een mythische figuur die een fortuin verdiend heeft met zijn uitvindingen.: de synthesizer, maar ook spraakherkenning, een uitvinding die hij trouwens verkocht heeft aan Lernout & Hauspie. Een paar jaar geleden kwam Ray tot de vaststelling dat bijna alles wat wij meemaken 'exponentieel' stijgt. Zeker onze technologische wereld kent een verdubbeling van capaciteit om de 18 maanden. En dat heeft zo zijn consequentie. In 2001 had een computer ongeveer de hersencapaciteit van een insect, in 2011 de hersenen van een muis. Ray heeft heel mooi gezien dat omstreeks 2025 een computer de hersencapaciteit van een mens zal hebben, en tegen 2050 de hersencapaciteit van de hele wereldbevolking. Volgens hem verandert er op dat moment iets fundamenteels: de Singularity. We komen dan terecht in een wereld waar we niet meer beperkt worden door onze menselijke hersencapaciteit. en waar we allerlei wereldproblemen kunnen oplossen omdat kennis ook exponentieel zal stijgen.
