2 From September 2009 two existing research masters (Art History and History of Architecture) will be replaced by a new English-language interdisciplinary research master, Visual Arts, Media and Architecture (VAMA). The research master will concentrate on the study of current developments in visual arts, architecture and media - from a theoretical and historical perspective. These developments - among them, the role of the new media and the growth of the 'creative industries' - have led to complex relationships between art, architecture, media and society. In the research master both the visual and material manifestation, presentation and representation of these relationships will be examined theoretically and historically. Moreover, the arts and the media will not just be studied as separate domains, but will also be examined in their wider, socio-cultural context and mutual interaction. The two-year research master's is aimed in particular at the talented student with an academic bachelor's diploma in art, media and culture. We specifically target students who cherish a critical attitude, make associations based on a profound knowledge of their research subject and wish to develop into independent academic researchers. The research master offers a two-year programme and consists of 120 credits. Several courses are obligatory, but there is also plenty of opportunity for individual trajectories that allow for a personal profile, on the basis of electives and tutorials (27 ec) and the thesis (30 ec). Zij maken kennis met instellingen en instrumenten op het gebied van architectonisch en stedebouwkundig erfgoed in de praktijk. Inhoud vak In de colleges worden erfgoedtheorieen besproken en komt de geschiedenis van de monumentenzorg in Nederland aan de orde. Inzicht wordt geboden in de achtergrond van diverse restauratieopvattingen. Voorbeelden van de hedendaagse omgang met gebouwd erfgoed worden door gastsprekers uit het werkveld besproken. Inhoud vak Architectuurrecensies verschijnen in verschillende media: kranten, weekbladen, internetsites, vaktijdschriften Deze artikelen bespreken vaak recent uitgegeven boeken of recent opgeleverde bouwprojecten, tentoonstellingen, ontwerpwedstrijden of publieke debatten. In sommige gevallen gaat het om een informatief verslag. In andere gevallen betreft het een uitvoerig onderbouwde beschouwing. Dit vak bediscussieert, analyseert en verkent de plaats van de actuele architectuur- en designkritiek in vergelijking met dat van enkele decennia geleden. 9 Max Horkheimer referred to as the culture industry. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, does the culture of the masses still present a threat to High Art, as Adorno and Horkheimer then feared? Or have the arts today completely lost out in the battle against standardisation, leveling, commercialisation and popularisation? Has art finally become a lucrative business in the modern economy, a mere component of the entertainment sector, or can it still operate autonomously and critically? And if so, what are the visual and discursive, material and conceptual strategies at hand? Or has the picture never been as pessimistic as Adorno and Horkheimer painted it? Is there still a division to be drawn between elite and popular, bourgeois and everyday culture, or do we need other terms to assess present-day developments and events in the art world and the cultural sphere at large? The institutionalisation of the sphere of the visual arts since the nineteenth century and the ensuing distribution into different sites and institutions serve as the historical and theoretical framework for these questions and queries. The aim is to explore the development and change of the classical sites and institutions of the arts the museum, the studio, the exhibition and the market under the influence of the rampant phenomena of the cultural industries in the twentieth century. What is left of their historically defined function of providing a critical space of exemption, if not opposition, within the bourgeois public sphere? To what extent can they still produce, preserve and distribute aesthetic and historical knowledge while neither immediately nor entirely being subjected to ideological instrumentalisation or economic interests? Do they still serve as places for critical resistance and radical negativity, or have they turned into sites of meek affirmation and obedient approval? Form of tuition The course program alternates between a theoretical course and an editorial session. The themes discussed during the theoretical course (centred around one institution: museum, studio, exhibition and market) serve as a critical framework for written essays by the students, which will be openly discussed and edited during the following editorial session. Bosma Teaching method(s) Seminar Course objective The comparative analysis and active use of relevant theories of the image in art history, comparative arts and media studies and the history of architecture Course content This course examines different conceptualizations of the image in the context of historical transformations of the arts, particularly during the twentieth century, and developments in contemporary visual culture. The course focusses on the critical reading and discussion of key texts, in conjunction with research subjects that are of interest to the participants. The course is not about 'applying' theory, but it does aim to find use value in the theories by confronting them with specific images and cultural practices. Form of tuition Lecture and seminar. 12 Lesmethode(n) Excursie, Werkcollege Doel vak Het opbouwen van analytisch inzicht in en het kritisch leren omgaan met vraagstellingen, methoden en antwoorden in het kunsthistorisch onderzoek naar de kunst van de vroegmoderne periode; het verwerven van kennis en inzicht in de historiografie van dit terrein van het kunsthistorisch onderzoek. Inhoud vak De cursus bestaat uit 3 onderdelen. (1) Ten eerste wordt aan de hand van een literatuurlijst kennis gemaakt met de soorten vraagstukken, methoden en antwoorden in het (nationale en internationale) kunsthistorisch onderzoek naar de 'oude kunst' sinds de 19e eeuw. Daarnaast worden teksten gelezen over belangrijke kwesties als het belang van stijlgeschiedenis, het iconologisch onderzoek en de plaats van de kunst in de cultuurgeschiedenis. (2) Ten tweede kiest iedere student een recente publicatie (uit het nietmuseale veld), waarover een referaat en een klein werkstuk wordt geschreven met speciale aandacht voor vraagstelling en methodiek en voor de (eventuele) relatie met de voorgeschiedenis van het kunsthistorisch onderzoek. (3) Ten derde worden twee tentoonstellingen bezocht (nader te bepalen), die worden geanalyseerd op vraagstelling, methoden en antwoord(en). Davidts Werkcollege Doel vak Het kunnen onderkennen en analyseren van de belangrijkste kunsttheoretische, geschiedfilosofische en wetenschapsmethodologische problemen bij de bestudering van de moderne en hedendaagse kunst. Inhoud vak In de inleiding op het boek Painting as Model (Cambridge, Mass.: The MIT Press, 1995) stelt de kunsthistoricus Yve-Alain Bois dat hij onder meer van de filosoof Roland Barthes geleerd heeft dat theorie niet op kunst 'toegepast' kan worden: "concepts must be forged from the object of one s inquiry or imported according to that object s specific exigency." De belangrijkste opgave voor de kunsthistoricus, zo stelt Bois, bestaat erin te vertrekken van het kunstobject: "the main theoretical act is to define this object, not the way around. To define an object, one has to know it intimately." Deze methodologische uitdaging ligt aan de basis van de collegereeks methodologie. Hoe vallen kunsttheorie en kunstobject met elkaar te verzoenen? Welke historische, theoretische, kritische en artistieke bronnen kunnen aangewend worden bij het lezen en het begrijpen van de betekenis van het kunstwerk. De cursus is gestructureerd rond de 4 inleidingen tot het boek Art Since Modernism Antimodernism - Postmodernism [ed. Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Alain Bois & Benjamin H.D. Buchloh (London: Thames and Hudson, 2004)]. De collegereeks bestaat telkens uit een closereading van een van de 4 inleidingen [Hal Foster, Psychoanalysis in Modernism and as Method ; Benjamin H.D. Buchloh, The Social History of Art: Models and Concepts ; Yve-Alain Bois, Formalism and Structuralism ; Rosalind Krauss, Poststructuralism and Deconstruction ], waarbij de respectievelijke methodologische invalshoeken worden gekaderd en verder uitgelicht. In de daaropvolgende colleges geven studenten referaten op basis van historische en hedendaagse teksten uit een aanvullende literatuurlijst. Hoewel recente theoretische auteurs centraal staan, worden hun standpunten en benaderingen ook historisch gecontextualiseerd. De problematische status van klassieke kunsthistorische methoden in de omgang met moderne en hedendaagse kunst komt ook aan bod, evenals de sterke invloed die andere disciplines (literatuurwetenschap, filosofie, semiologie, sociologie) sinds de jaren zeventig op de bestudering van kunst hebben gehad. Doorheen de cursus wordt bovendien veel aandacht geschonken aan geschriften van kunstenaars. Verstraete Teaching method(s) Seminar Course objective This course offers an introduction to concepts and practices of intermediality. It offers a survey of the major concepts used in contemporary debates on the synergy between the arts and the media, and teaches the students not only to get a grip on those terms, but also to understand them in relation to each other. On the basis of these key terms, students acquire a good understanding of the theoretical debates on intermediality, while learning to analyze concrete objects and practices. Students are asked to relate the terms and theoretical issues discussed to their own disciplinary backgrounds. A close reading of installations, art works, texts, will be part of the training. At the end of the course students not only understand the major (theoretical) aspects concerning intermediality, but they can also present a sophisticated analysis in writing. Course content We will read such concepts as text, medium, mediation, intertextuality; reproduction in a variety of theoretical texts, and relate them to concrete art works and practices. Form of tuition Seminar. The course combines seminars with in- class presentations by the students. Students will be encouraged to make use of blackboard or websites to exchange ideas and information. Inhoud vak Onder de koepel van de Bijzondere Vraagstukken worden jaarlijks wisselende werkcolleges aangeboden die nauw aansluiten bij lopend onderzoek van de staf Beeldende Kunst of kaderen binnen specifieke onderzoeksprojecten en -initiatieven (publicaties, tentoonstellingen, conferentie). Deze gerichte werkcolleges bieden studenten de gelegenheid om, onder intensieve begeleiding van docenten, zich methodisch en inhoudelijk voor te bereiden op het onderzoekswerk voor de masterscriptie. Flore Teaching method(s) Seminar Course objective The aims are: training students in research strategies dealing with the history of (interior) architecture and in developing and presenting critical reflections. Course content In the past few decades, in many contemporary cities, buildings with historical value have been redesigned or altered in order to house new functions. Houses were converted into house museums, post offices into cultural centres, socialist meeting centres into public theatres... This process often corresponded with a conscious rebranding of the historical buildings and their new functions within the contemporary urban culture. The different actors involved in the process of conversion have to deal with the historical content of the buildings. But to what extent and what kind historical information on the buildings physical appearance, its interior arrangements, its use or meanings is taken into account? This seminar approaches this question through several international case studies. Special attention is paid to questions of interior design and on the different sources, including oral history, for obtaining information on the historical use and meaning of buildings. L.J. de Vries Teaching method(s) Seminar Course objective Being able to take a position in theoretical debates, to substantiate methodological choices and to point out innovative research possibilities in the field (part 1). Being able to comment substantially on other people's research proposals. Being able to defend and make a case for different points of view, to lead a debate, to question and discuss different sets of values from different perspectives (part 2). Being able to write a research proposal which meets the criteria for research proposals by NWO and to give a substantiated oral and written presentation at a high level of abstraction (part 2). Course content The Research Design seminar consists of two parts which take place consecutively during the fourth term of year one and the second term of year two of the Research Master course. Students will be taught to step-by-step design a research proposal which meets the highest requirements. In the first part of the course the emphasis will be on positioning oneself in scientific debates, on the making of methodological choices and the search for future research possibilities that will lead to innovations in the research. This will be done by means of in-depth discussions of theoretical articles, other sources and research proposals. Form of tuition The seminar course consists of two terms of; seven weekly meetings of four hours each. All students will be expected to be well- prepared and to participate actively and autonomously at all times. Students will take on the roles of presenter, commentator and discussion leader. Type of assessment Oral and written presentations, comments on presentations by other students. Students will be assessed on their class participation, written assignments, oral presentations and their peer reviews of fellow students.
