3 04 05 choreografie Juanjo Arques decorontwerp Krijn de Koning ROULETTE Choreograaf Juanjo Arques en beeldend kunstenaar Krijn de Koning kenden elkaar niet toen ze ten behoeve van Dutch Doubles een eerste verkennende afspraak maakten. Ballet betekende voor De Koning sowieso een sprong in het diepe. Al gauw ontdekten de twee echter een gemeenschappelijke fascinatie voor beweging en voor het organische. In wezen kijken we op dezelfde manier naar het construeren van iets. Of het nu om een ballet of een bouwwerk gaat: we zien het als iets wat leven heeft, organisch tot stand komt en geen duidelijk afgebakende grenzen heeft. Het leven is een roulette, die gedachte is het uitgangspunt van hun gezamenlijke creatie. Of, in de woorden van John Lennon. Life is what s happening while you re making other plans. Hoe mensen elkaar ontmoeten, wat de ene ontmoeting voor effect heeft op de andere, hoe liefdespartners elkaar vinden: het zijn onvoorspelbare, grillige processen die voortdurend aan verandering onderhevig zijn. Dat besef inspireerde Arques tot een cyclische choreografie die volgens de Spanjaard vier bewegingsstromen kent: ontmoeten, Choreographer Juanjo Arques and visual artist Krijn de Koning did not know each other before their first exploratory meeting for Dutch Doubles. For De Koning, ballet itself was a leap in the dark. However, the pair soon discovered a shared fascination for movement and for the organic. Essentially, we take the same view of constructing something. Whether it s a ballet or a building, we see it as something that s alive and is created organically, and which doesn t have clearly defined boundaries. Life is a roulette wheel. This is the idea that forms the starting point of their joint creation. Or, in the words of John Lennon, Life is what s happening while you re making other plans. How people meet each other, what effect one meeting has on another and how lovers find one another: these are all unpredictable, capricious processes that are continually subject to change. This realisation inspired Arques to choreograph a cyclic work, which according to the Spaniard has four movement flows : meeting, investigating, reflecting and meeting again. De Koning plays with the theme using colour and spatial onderzoeken, reflecteren en weer ontmoeten. De Koning speelt rond het thema met kleur en met dimensies van ruimte. Zijn decorontwerp suggereert een universum waar alles kan gebeuren en bevindt zich anders dan bij dans doorgaans gebruikelijk midden op het toneel. Het is een fysiek obstakel, waar de dansers niet omheen kunnen. Wel is er een deur, maar wat is daarachter? En wat laten ze achter als ze naar binnen gaan. Wat is binnen, wat is buiten? De musici van Slagwerk Den Haag bevinden zich tussen de dansers. Beide groepen dragen maskers, om een zekere anonimiteit te suggereren. Vanuit de orkestbak antwoordt Holland Symfonia met een viool kwartet van Jacob Ter Veldhuis, waardoor een muzikale dialoog tussen de slagwerkers en de strijkers ontstaat. Volgens Arques kun je de nieuwe creatie van hem en De Koning het best vergelijken met een puzzel waarvan pas op het einde duidelijk zal zijn of alle stukjes in elkaar passen. Tot dan kan alles nog veranderen. dimensions. His set designs suggest a universe where anything can happen. The scenery is placed unusually for dance in the centre of the stage. It is a physical obstacle, which the dancers cannot get around. There is a door but what is behind it? And what do they leave behind if they go through it? What is inside and what is outside? The musicians of Slagwerk Den Haag are amongst the dancers. Both groups wear masks, to suggest a certain anonymity. From the orchestra pit, Holland Symfonia responds with a violin quartet by Jacob Ter Veldhuis, creating a musical dialogue between the percussionists and the string players. Arques says that his new creation with De Koning can best be compared to a puzzle, where you don t know whether all the pieces will fit together until the end. Up to then, everything can still change.

4 06 07 choreografie Ton Simons video Rineke Dijkstra ROMANCE Mozart op zijn persoonlijkst. Zo typeert choreograaf Ton Simons Romance, het middendeel van Mozarts twintigste pianoconcert. De compositie spoorde Simons aan om na het grootschalige architectonische bouwwerk dat hij in 2012 voor Het Nationale Ballet creëerde* dit keer een veel persoonlijker en kwetsbaarder werk te maken. Over de vraag met welke kunstenaar hij dit werk wilde maken, hoefde Simons eigenlijk geen moment na te denken: fotografe en videokunstenaar Rineke Dijkstra. Omdat hij haar oeuvre al heel lang bewondert en er een bijzondere sensibiliteit voor kwetsbaarheid in herkent. Op Simons verzoek dacht Dijkstra na over de mogelijkheid om in Romance iets met video te doen. Ze vroeg zich af hoe ze haar voorkeur voor stills en ingehouden emoties zou moeten combineren met dans, omdat dans nu eenmaal per definitie expressief en in beweging is. Zo ontstond het idee voor een drieluik, waarbij het middendeel Simons choreografie voor twee dansers als het ware wordt omarmd door videobeelden van het danserskoppel. Dijkstra laat zien hoe ze zich in opperste Mozart at his most personal. This is how choreographer Ton Simons describes Romance, the middle section of Mozart s piano concerto nr. 20. The composition prompted Simons to make a much more personal and vulnerable work this time (following the large-scale architectural structure that he created for Dutch National Ballet in 2012*). Simons had no hesitation in answering the question of which artist he wanted to collaborate with on this piece: photographer and video artist Rineke Dijkstra. He has admired her oeuvre for a long time already, seeing in it an exceptional sensitivity to vulnerability. At Simons request, Dijkstra thought about the possibility of doing something with video in Romance. She wondered how she could combine her preference for stills and pent-up emotions with dance, as dance is by definition expressive and in motion. This generated the idea of a triptych, in which the middle section Simons choreography for two dancers is embraced, as it were, by video images of the dance couple. Dijkstra shows how they prepare for their performance in the utmost concentratie voorbereiden op hun performance en, daarna, hoe ze afgaan, uitgeteld na de elf minuten durende marathon die Romance volgens Simons is. Simons en Dijkstra bieden, zeggen ze, met hun romance binnen één kader twee manieren aan om naar iets te kijken. Ze hebben ieder voor een eigen aanpak gekozen, maar wel gebruikmakend van dezelfde elementen én, toch ook, beïnvloed door elkaar. Het beeld heeft effect op de choreografie en andersom. Dat geeft, hopen ze, aan hun beider werk een extra dimensie, en aan het geheel een extra gelaagdheid. Immers: door iets op twee manieren te laten zien, is de kans dat je er betekenis in kunt ontdekken ook groter. *) The Nature of Difference, gemaakt voor het programma Present/s (2012) concentration, and then how they go off stage exhausted after the eleven-minute marathon, as Simons describes Romance. In their romance, say Simons and Dijkstra, they offer two ways of looking at something within one frame of reference. They have each chosen their own approach, while using the same elements and still being influenced by one another. The images affect the choreography and vice versa. They hope that this lends an extra dimension to their individual work, and adds extra layers to the whole. 5 8 9 choreografie Hans van Manen harp Remy van Kesteren DANCES WITH HARP Het was alsof ik bij de autoraces zat, zegt Hans van Manen over de eerste keer dat hij Remy van Kesteren live hoorde musiceren. De kracht waarmee hij speelde, de veelheid aan klankkleuren. Alsof de prachtigste Ferrari s voorbij kwamen. Dat Van Manen in het publiek zat was voor Van Kesteren een gelukkig toeval: kort daarvoor had de jonge harpist een compositie gespeeld die, zo had iemand hem gesuggereerd, misschien wel geschikt zou zijn voor een ballet van Van Manen. Maar ja, hoe kom je met Nederlands meesterchoreograaf in contact? Die compositie, het tweede deel van Mouvements Eclatants van de Argentijns- Nederlandse Carlos Micháns, is nu het openingsstuk van Dances with Harp. Een geweldig gek modern werk voor soloharp, dat Remy met een ongelooflijke aandacht en intensiteit speelt, aldus Van Manen. De overige muziekstukken hebben ze, elkaar voedend en inspirerend, samen gekozen. Composities van Frederic Monpou, Heitor Villa-Lobos en Bach die níet voor harp geschreven zijn, maar die door Van Kesteren speciaal voor Dutch Doubles zijn bewerkt en gearrangeerd. En die Van It was as if I was at Formula 1, says Hans van Manen about the first time he heard Remy van Kesteren performing live. The power of his playing and the multitude of timbres. As if the most beautiful Ferraris were driving past. For Van Kesteren, it was a happy coincidence that Van Manen was in the audience. Not long before, the young harpist had played a composition that somebody suggested might be suitable for a Van Manen ballet. But how do you come into contact with the master choreographer of the Netherlands? This work, the second part of Mouvements Eclatants by the Argentinian-Dutch composer Carlos Micháns, is now the opening piece of Dances with Harp. A wonderfully crazy modern work for solo harp, which Remy plays with incredible focus and intensity, says Van Manen. They chose the other pieces of music together, encouraging and inspiring one another. There are compositions by Frederic Monpou, Heitor Villa- Lobos and Bach that are not written for harp, but have been specially arranged by Van Kesteren for Dutch Doubles. They inspired Van Manen to choreograph a series of variations, in which pas de deux alternate with sections for three boys. The Manen tot een reeks choreografische variaties geïnspireerd hebben, waarbij pas de deux en delen voor drie jongens elkaar afwisselen. De duetten belichten de uiteenlopende kwaliteiten van drie dansparen; de jongensdelen knallen er tussendoor. Het contrast is groot, daar kan geen muur tegenop, aldus de choreograaf. Buitengewoon nieuwsgierig is Van Manen naar het effect van de muziek op de choreografie. Het harpspel zal, zegt hij, sfeerbepalend zijn, waardoor het resultaat heel anders zal zijn dan bij bijvoorbeeld pianobegeleiding. Van Kesteren voelt zich nu al verrijkt door de ervaring. In de balletstudio s zoekt hij zijn ruimte: Ik speel toch steeds anders, kan de muziek niet elke avond op dezelfde manier opdreunen. Dat is niet mijn ding. Geen probleem, aldus Van Manen: De dansers zijn reuze intelligent, die vinden hun weg daarin wel. duets emphasise the different qualities of three dance couples, and the boys sections burst in between them. The contrast is great, there s no denying it, says the choreographer. Van Manen is extremely curious as to the effect of the music on the choreography. The harp-playing will determine the atmosphere, he says, which will give a very different result to piano accompaniment, for instance. Van Kesteren already feels enriched by the experience. He finds his own way in the ballet studios. I play differently all the time, and I can t just churn out the music the same way every evening. That s not my thing. Van Manen has no problem with that. The dancers are extremely intelligent. They ll find a way around it.

6 10 11 choreografie Jorma Elo kostuums en decor Viktor&Rolf SHAPE Dat de Finse choreograaf Jorma Elo een nieuw werk voor Het Nationale Ballet zou maken, hing al langer in de lucht. Dat hij uitgerekend in Dutch Doubles zijn debuut bij het gezelschap maakt, ziet de vaste choreograaf van het Boston Ballet als een bijzonder geschenk. Het maakte de opwinding nóg groter. Zeker toen artistiek directeur Ted Brandsen een samenwerking met modeontwerpers Viktor&Rolf voorstelde. Elo kende hun werk wel, maar pas toen hij zich er verder in verdiepte, ontdekte hij dat het duo ook heel balletic ontwerpen op zijn naam heeft staan. Elo beweegt zich als choreograaf tussen kleinere, eigentijdse dansgezelschappen en de meest prestigieuze balletgezelschappen ter wereld. En dat is terug te zien in zijn creaties; Elo laat zich niet vastpinnen op één stijl. Maar spitzen en tutu s, daar is hij dol op! Met Viktor&Rolf kwam hij al snel tot overeenstemming: het modeduo zou in Shape zijn visie geven op de tutu. Vijf bijzondere tutu-ontwerpen zijn het resultaat, waaronder een vierkant exemplaar. Ontwerpen die, hoe exclusief en prachtig ook, volgens It had been in the offing for a while that the Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo would create a new work for Dutch National Ballet. The resident choreographer with Boston Ballet sees it as a special present that he can make his debut with the company in Dutch Doubles. It s even more exciting. Especially when artistic director Ted Brandsen proposed a collaboration with fashion designers Viktor&Rolf. Elo slightly knew their work, but it was only when he delved deeper that he discovered the duo had already created some very balletic designs. As a choreographer, Elo works with both smaller contemporary dance groups and the most prestigious ballet companies in the world. And this is reflected in his creations, as Elo doesn t allow himself to be pinned down to one particular style. But he is crazy about pointe shoes and tutus! He soon came to an agreement with Viktor&Rolf. In Shape, the fashion duo would give his vision of the tutu. This has resulted in five special tutu designs, one of which is a square model. According to Elo, the designs however exclusive and beautiful also have a great simplicity, so Elo tegelijkertijd een grote eenvoud kennen en daardoor alle ruimte laten voor de dans. Net als het toneelbeeld het eerste dat Viktor&Rolf ontwierpen voor een balletproductie. Bij zijn creaties laat Elo zich doorgaans als eerste door muziek inspireren. Dit keer kwam daar nog een inspiratiebron bij: het Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, dat, ondanks zijn ongelooflijk rijke kunstcollectie, volgens Elo eenzelfde combinatie van treurigheid én grandeur in zich draagt als de gekozen Beethoven-composities. Maar, waarschuwt hij, verwacht geen nagebootst museum op het toneel. Zijn choreografie is, zegt hij, puur een persoonlijke vertaling van het gevoel dat hij krijgt bij het luisteren naar Beethovens muziek en het zien van de in zijn ogen bijna naargeestig zorgvuldig tentoongestelde museumcollectie. leave plenty of room for the dancing. The same goes for the sets, which are the first that Viktor&Rolf have designed for a ballet production. For his creations, Elo usually takes his initial inspiration from the music. But this time, there was an additional source of inspiration: the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, which despite its incredibly rich art collection, has the same combination of sadness and grandeur as the Beethoven compositions he has selected, according to Elo. However, he warns, we should not expect a copy of a museum on stage. His choreography, he says, is purely a personal interpretation of the feeling he gets while listening to Beethoven s music and seeing the museum collection exhibited, to his mind, with almost dreary care.

Zij maakt haar debuut als dirigent van Holland Symfonia in Dutch Doubles. Holland Symfonia is het vaste orkest van Het Nationale Ballet en het Nederlands Dans Theater. Daarnaast ontwikkelt het orkest innovatieve concertformules en bereikt daarmee een breed publiek. Het orkest speelt in symfonische bezetting bestaande uit 45 musici in vaste dienst en gastspelers. Chefdirigent is Matthew Rowe.
