Wereldwijd engagement voor duurzaamheid Als één van de voornaamste leveranciers wereldwijd van bouwmaterialen, is Holcim Ltd mee verantwoordelijk voor de toekomst van onze planeet en maatschappij. Daarom produceert Holcim in de ongeveer 70 landen waar de Groep vestigingen heeft, bouwmaterialen die zo duurzaam mogelijk zijn. Jarenlang al engageert de Groep zich voor de duurzame toepassing van haar producten. Sinds 7 jaar hoort de Groep bij de Dow Jones Sustainability Word Index en de Dow Jones STOXX Sustainability Index. Om duurzaam bouwen nog krachtdadiger te ondersteunen, richtte Holcim in 2003 de Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction (Holcim Stichting voor Duurzaam Bouwen) op. Deze stichting wordt gesteund door Holcim, maar blijft onafhankelijk van haar commerciële belangen. Duurzaam bouwen een plicht Duurzaamheid houdt in dat de huidige generatie voldoet aan haar eigen behoeften zonder de kansen van de toekomstige generaties te beperken. Voor leefbaarheid op lange termijn, moet duurzaamheid de economische, sociale en milieu-impact omvatten dit zijn de drie sleutelelementen. Bewustzijn ontwikkelen, uitmuntendheid promoten De Holcim Foundation stelt zich tot doel professionals en het grote publiek meer bewust te maken van het belang van duurzaam bouwen. Ze is erop gericht wereldwijd beschikbare knowhow in contact te brengen en wil een mindset promoten die duurzaamheid niet alleen ziet in termen van enorme technische uitdagingen, maar die ook architecturale uitmuntendheid omvat, teneinde tot een betere levenskwaliteit te leiden. 2

3 Nieuwe perspectieven ontwikkelen voor onze toekomst: 3 de Internationale Wedstrijd Holcim Awards Holcim Awards for sustainable construction Erkenning van avant-gardistische projecten De Holcim Awards is een internationale wedstrijd voor innovatieve projecten en toekomstgerichte concepten op regionaal en wereldwijd niveau. Deze wedstrijd wil architecten, planners, ingenieurs en projecteigenaars aanmoedigen om in hun werk buiten de traditionele paden van duurzaam bouwen te treden en om ecologische, sociale en economische beschouwingen in overeenstemming te brengen. Alle projecten en concepten in gebieden van architectuur, landschapsarchitectuur, stedenbouw, burgerlijke bouwkunde, mechanische engineering en aanverwante domeinen kunnen deelnemen aan deze wedstrijd. Een evaluatie van duurzaamheid Duurzaamheid is één van de meest besproken topics ter wereld, maar ook het minst goed begrepen. Om de criteria voor duurzaam bouwen beknopt en transparant te maken hebben de Holcim Foundation en haar partner-universiteiten vijf doelstellingen geformuleerd. Deze criteria benaderen duurzaamheid vanuit een holistisch perspectief. De doelstellingen zijn ook een middel om de verschillende projecten van de wedstrijden Holcim Awards te evalueren. Vooruitgang Radicale verandering en overdraagbaarheid Het project moet blijk geven van innovatie en duurzaam bouwen hoog in het vaandel dragen; een kwalitatieve sprong in vergelijking met traditionele processen. Er wordt verwacht dat een radicaal vernieuwende en trendzettende aanpak, en dit ongeacht zijn omvang, overdraagbaar is naar een hele reeks andere toepassingen. Mensen Ethische normen en sociale rechtvaardigheid Het project moet beantwoorden aan de hoogste ethische normen en moet sociale rechtvaardigheid ondersteunen in alle bouwprojectfasen, vanaf de planning en het bouwproces tot de lange termijn effecten op het maatschappelijk weefsel. Het project moet een vooruitstrevend antwoord bieden in het licht van ethische en sociale verantwoordelijkheid. Planeet Ecologische kwaliteits- en energiebesparing Het project moet blijk geven van een verstandig beheer van de natuurlijke rijkdommen, en dit gedurende zijn ganse levensduur, met inbegrip van werking en onderhoud. De zorg voor het milieu op lange termijn, zowel met betrekking tot materiaal- als energieverbruik, moet een integraal onderdeel vormen van de gebouwde entiteit. Voorspoed Economisch rendement en verenigbaarheid Het project moet economisch haalbaar zijn en innovatief wat het gebruik van financiële middelen betreft. De financiering moet kostenbewust gebruik van middelen stimuleren en verenigbaar zijn met de behoeften en beperkingen tijdens de hele levensduur van het gebouw. Vakkundigheid Contextuele en esthetische impact Het project moet een hoge standaard van architecturale kwaliteit voeren inzake de manier waarop het inspeelt op de culturele en fysische context. Ruimte en vorm zijn daarbij van uitzonderlijke betekenis waardoor het gebouw een blijvende esthetische impact heeft op zijn omgeving. Wedstrijd op wereldniveau in twee fasen Elke wedstrijdcyclus duurt drie jaar, vanaf de aankondiging tot de toekenning van de prijzen. Voor elke cyclus wordt in het totaal twee miljoen USD aan prijzengeld toegekend. De wedstrijd verloopt in twee fasen. In de eerste fase worden de beste projecten en concepten gezocht in de vijf werelddelen: Europa, Noord-Amerika, Zuid-Amerika, Afrika en het Midden Oosten, en Azië en de Stille Oceaan Regio. De 15 projecten die de gouden, zilveren en bronzen medaille van de Holcim Awards ontvangen in deze vijf regio s, nemen daarna deel aan de wedstrijd van de Global Holcim Awards en voor de Holcim prijs voor Innovatie. Internationale jury s Holcim Awards Eerst evalueren onafhankelijke jury s de kandidaturen in de verschillende regio s en daarna beoordeelt een wereldjury de finalisten op wereldniveau. Tot de jury s die worden gesteund door de partner-universiteiten, behoren vooraanstaande leden van de wetenschappelijke, bedrijfs- en maatschappelijke wereld. Inschrijving voor de wedstrijd vanaf 1 juli 2010 Voor de tweede wedstrijd Holcim Awards 2008/2009 werden projecten ingediend (50% meer dan voor de eerste cyclus). De projecten waren gelegen in 121 landen; de auteurs kwamen uit 90 landen. In het totaal kregen 52 projecten uit 27 landen Holcim Awards, erkenningsprijzen of Next Generation prijzen. De winnaars van de Global Holcim Awards en Innovatie prijs 2009 werden gevierd tijdens de prijsuitreiking in Fez, Ho Chi Minh City, Beijing en San Francisco. De derde wedstrijdcyclus van de Holcim Awards staat open voor kandidaturen vanaf 1 juli 2010, tot 23 maart 2011 op 3
