2 Knowledge vs Perceptions Knowledge and Beliefs Test Uninformed knowledge and perceptions First in May 2010, repeated November 2011 Representative samples of Dutch respondents Perceptions of CCS much more powerful direct predictors of CCS attitude than knowledge about CCS, CO2, and related concepts But knowledge and perceptions are related Could knowledge play a significant role as predictor of perceptions? p

3 Model development Assumed that attitude towards CCS is predicted by perceptions about CCS and that perceptions are predicted by knowledge about CCS and CO2 Examined all relations between CCS attitude and the possible predictors, e.g. perceptions of climate change, knowledge of CO2, etc. Left out everything unrelated to CCS attitude Built a model with remaining predictors Aim: predict as much variation in CCS attitude as possible with as few predictors as possible Results provide recommendations for national communication and information strategies

5 What does NOT predict CCS attitude? Correct knowledge about natural characteristics and sources of CO2 e.g. is released when we exhale : Knowing that t climate change mitigation is the only goal of CCS Knowledge of energy mix (fossil, renewables, nuclear) Perceptions of climate change Perceived risk that investments in CCS will create a lock-in Perceived risk that CCS will be too costly and/or decrease property value Perceived inconvenience caused by CO2 transport

6 Implications The model suggests that communication and information about CCS to a general public should focus on: Educate about The characteristics, sources, and effects of CO2 aimed at correcting wrongly held beliefs about CO2 Debate (not persuade!) about The benefits of CCS The risks of leakage of CO2
