4 Academy of Ancient Music Het orkest en koor van de Academy of Ancient Music zijn wereldberoemd dankzij de authentieke uitvoeringen van muziek uit de tijd van de barok en Weense klassieken. Authentiek betekent: door middel van zorgvuldig onderzoek en, voor zover mogelijk, dankzij het gebruik van eerste uitgaven. Deze historisch-geïnformeerde benadering was baanbrekend toen het orkest in 1973 werd opgericht door dirigent Christopher Hogwood, en onder de leiding van dirigent Richard Egarr behoort de AAM nog steeds tot de voorhoede van de barokorkesten. Oorspronkelijk opgericht als een opname-orkest, beschikt de AAM over een indrukwekkende catalogus van meer dan 300 cd s, die met talrijke onderscheidingen zijn bekroond, waaronder de Brit Award, de Gramophone Award, de Edison Klassiek en de MIDEM Award. De vijfde cd op het eigen label van het orkest werd uitgebracht in oktober 2016, met muziek van de componist en tijdgenoot van Monteverdi, Dario Castello. Tot de eerdere opnames in deze AAM-serie behoort o.a. de originele versie uit 1727 van JS Bachs Matthäus Passion, die een triomf werd genoemd in Gramophone magazine. In 2010 lanceerde de AAM de serie AAMplify, een onderwijsprogramma waarmee het orkest de volgende generatie van jonge musici en publiek mee helpt ontwikkelen. De AAM presenteert in samenwerking met partners in het hele land workshops, masterclasses en andere innovatieve projecten voor jongeren. Tot de hoogtepunten van het seizoen behoren o.a. optredens met Jordi Savall, de tiende verjaardag van Richard Egarr als Music Director van de AAM en Monteverdis Vespers; en een project rond het ontstaan van Bachs Orkestsuite in D. De AAM is Associate Ensemble van het Barbican Centre in Londen en Orchestrain-Residence aan de Universiteit van Cambridge.

5 Richard Egarr Of het nu aan het toetsenbord is, in solorecital of kamermuziek, als dirigent, of bij zijn mondelinge inleidingen bij zijn optredens - in al zijn musiceren combineert Richard Egarr een vrolijk gevoel voor avontuur en een scherpe, onderzoekende geest. Sinds 2006 is Richard Egarr Music Director van de Academy of Ancient Music, en Associate Artist van het Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Zijn carrière als gastdirigent voerde hem langs orkesten als het London Symphony Orchestra, het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest en het Philadelphia Orchestra. Dit seizoen debuteert Egarr bij het Fins Radio Symfonie Orkest, St Paul Chamber, Utah Symphony Orchestra en Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, en keert hij terug naar het Seattle Symphony Orchestra, NDR Hannover, defilharmonie, Residentie Orkest, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia en Tasmanian Symphony. Ook is hij wederom gastdirigent bij de Händel en Haydn Society in Boston. Al snel na zijn aantreden bij de AAM richtte Egarr het koor van de AAM op, waarmee hij sindsdien vele opera s en oratoria uitvoerde. In de nabije toekomst staat onder andere een Purcell opera cyclus op het programma, bij het Barbican Centre, waar de AAM Associate Ensemble is. Richard debuteerde in 2007 in Glyndebourne met de uitvoering van een geënsceneerde versie van de Matthäus Passion. Daarnaast inspireert Egarr jonge musici, als docent aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, de Britten Pears Foundation, en Nederlandse Opera Academy (waarmee hij La Clemenza di Tito, Le nozze di Figaro en Rossini s Il Signor Bruschino uitvoerde). Hij is visiting artist aan de Juilliard School in New York. Ook als solist is Egarr dit seizoen te bewonderen, o.a. met recitals in Wigmore Hall, Bozar en Carnegie Hall, in het kader van een tournee door Noord- Amerika. Zijn uitgebreide discografie op Harmonia Mundi omvat solowerken van J.S. Bach, Händel, Mozart en Louis Couperin; zijn opname van de Partitas van Bach wordt uitgebracht in februari Met de Academy of Ancient Music nam hij zeven Handel discs op (bekroond met Gramophone Award in 2007 en de MIDEM en Edison awards in 2009), en, recentelijk, JS Bachs Johannes Passion en Mattheus Passion op het eigen label van de AAM. In 2015 dirigeerde Egarr een uitverkochte uitvoering van Gilbert en Sullivans HMS Pinafore op het Edinburgh International Festival, live opgenomen en uitgebracht op Linn Records in Egarr volgde een opleiding als koorknaap in York Minster, op Chetham s School of Music in Manchester, en als orgel-student aan Clare College Cambridge. Zijn studie bij Gustav en Marie Leonhardt was voor hem een belangrijke inspiratiebron op het gebied van de historische uitvoeringspraktijk.

6 Elizabeth Watts Elizabeth Watts was een veelbelovend archeologe, maar toch koos ze voor haar grote liefde, de muziek. Ze bereidde zich voor op een muziekstudie, werd aangenomen op het Royal College of Music en ervoer haar zangopleiding als een intense en wonderbaarlijke ervaring. Inmiddels heeft zij in haar korte carrière naam gemaakt en is zij een van de meest gewaardeerde lyrische sopranen van dit moment. Barbara Kozelj De uit Slovenië afkomstige Barbara Kozelj begon haar zangstudie in Ljubljana. Deze vervolgde ze in Amsterdam waar haar zangpedagoge Sasja Hunnego met bewondering over haar talent sprak: Haar Sloveense melancholische ziel en de warmte van haar persoonlijkheid klinken door in haar prachtige stem. Belangrijk voor haar carrière waren de dirigenten Paul McCreesh en Richard Egarr, die haar veelvuldig engageerden voor producties met barokmuziek en opera van onder meer Bach, Händel en Vivaldi. Met Egarr zong zij de Matthäus-passion in het Concertgebouw. Hetzelfde werk zong zij onder Iván Fischer in Carnegie Hall in New York. Barbara Kozelj zong veel grote operarollen bij onder meer De Nationale Opera en de Opera van Essen, waar ze als vaste gast aan verbonden is. Voor het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest zong ze de hoofdrol in de gevierde kinderopera Help Heksen HeXen en maakte ze het afgelopen seizoen indruk met haar vertolking van Vivaldi s Stabat Mater met het Nederlands Kamerorkest. Andrew Tortise Andrew Tortise studeerde aan het Trinity College in Cambridge en wordt momenteel gecoacht door Iris dell Acqua. Recent zong de Engelse tenor The Spirit of the Masque Gloriana (ROH Covent Garden), Peter Quint The Turn of the Screw (Lyon), David Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg en Ferrando Così fan tutte (Welsh National Opera), Lucano L incoronazione di Poppea en in Bachs Weihnachtsoratorium (Theater an der Wien) en Matthäus-Passion (Glyndebourne). Toekomst o.m.: Joerodivy Boris Godoenov (ook tijdens BBC Proms), Marzio Mitridate en Kunz Vogelgesang Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (ROH Covent Garden), en concerten met de Academy of Ancient Music, de Scottish Chamber Orchestra en The Monteverdi Choir onder leiding van Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Lukas Jakobski Lukas Jakobski, geboren in Polen, maakte deel uit van het Jette Parker Young Artist Programme van de Royal Opera House Covent Garden van 2009 tot 2011, waar hij o.a. de rol zong van Pietro in Verdi s Simon Boccanegra, Tall Engelsman in Prokofjevs The Gambler, Koning Aida en Angelotti Tosca. Lukas begon zijn muzikale opleiding als fagottist alvorens zich te wijden aan zijn zangcarrière aan de Academie voor Muziek in Poznan. In 2004 verhuisde hij naar Londen om te studeren bij Graeme Broadbent aan het Royal College of Music, waar hij o.a. werd onderscheiden met de Kathleen Ferrier Bursary prijs en de Concordia Serena Nevill prijs.

7 Toelichting Händels Messiah Rond 1740 besefte Händel dat zijn operaloopbaan ten einde was. Geconfronteerd met een onverschillig publiek overwoog hij zich geheel terug te trekken. Maar in de zomer van 1741 werd hij uitgenodigd door de Lord lieutnant van Dublin om voor die Ierse stad een geestelijk oratorium te schrijven. De componist zocht daarvoor samenwerking met zijn vriend Charles Jennens die heel vernuftig een libretto samenstelde met fragmenten uit het Oude en Nieuwe Testament die alle betrekking hadden op een niet-dramatische uitbeelding van Christus als de verlosser van de mensheid. De wezenlijke stemming die Jennens wenste te creëren, was er eentje van bezinning: de ten tonele gevoerde personen worden niet met naam en toenaam genoemd hoewel er natuurlijk een duidelijke suggestie is van een verhaal in het deel dat betrekking heeft op Christus geboorte. De eerste uitvoering vond 13 april 1742 in de New Music Hall in Dublin en de recette van het concert werd verdeeld tussen twee ziekenhuizen en een gevangenis. Ooit gaf George Bernard Shaw het volgende commentaar op de vrijwel niet te vermijden onmogelijkheid om het bijzondere, nieuwe karakter van het werk volledig op waarde te schatten: We zijn allemaal in de kerk getraind op Händel en dus zijn we eraan gewend geraakt dat we Händel zingen alsof hij niets te betekenen heeft. Dat mocht voor Engeland gelden, gelukkig is ook daar de situatie inmiddels ten goede gekeerd. Haast maat na maat is met betekenis geladen en het werk bezit een haast visionaire kwaliteit wanneer de overgang van het duister naar het licht wordt geschetst. Uit het gebruik van de solisten, het koor en het orkest blijkt Händels grote gevoel voor proporties, voor timing, voor drama, maar ook voor het zinnelijk genoegen aan klank. Er is een overdaad aan prachtige, bovendien rijk geschakeerde aria s (met een minimum aan recitatieven) van het grootse He was despised in da capo vorm tot het simpele, lyrische How beautiful are the feet. Even geweldig zijn de koren met een vaak ceremonieel karakter en vaak met een fugatisch contrapunt om de nadruk te leggen op de manier waarop een religieuze ervaring harmonisch kan samengaan met blije, eerbiedige muziek.
