1 Nog iets over apposities (bijstellingen) Herman Heringa, syntax seminar 5 april 2006 Vorige keer Paradigma Intonatie contour vertoont parenthetical dip (Schelfhout, 1999; Coppen et al., 2006). De toonhoogte daalt duidelijk aan het begin van de appositie en de hele constructie wordt iets onderdeel van de intonatiecontour van de dragerzin. 2 Attributief vs. echt Volledig vs. gedeeltelijk Niet-nominale appositie Burton-Roberts (1975): appositionele constructie blijft niet beperkt tot NP s. Ook volledige zinnen, werkwoorden, adjectieven en adverbialen: 1. You won t be totally alone, that s to say, there ll be others to help you. 2. [He] ran absolutely raced [up the hill.] 3. [They] sent him to Coventry, refused to speak to him. 4. [Under] normal, peacetime, [conditions.] 5. [They met] here, in London. Meyer (1992): De meeste niet-nominale apposities bestaan uit zinnen: 6. I was going to make a very stupid remark. I was going to say that nothing that tastes nice is poisonous. Acuña-Fariña (1999): Eigenlijk moet alleen niet-nominale en niet-adverbiale appositie echte appositie genoemd worden. Hierbij is sprake van een zinsdomein ipv een lokaal domein. Er is geen sprake van equivalentie tussen anker en appositie, maar van volledige overname van de functie in de zin. Deze constructies lijken het meest op correctie. Strict vs. zwak Quirk et al. (1985): onderscheid tussen stricte en zwakke apposities. Bij stricte appositie behoren anker en appositie tot dezelfde categorie; bij zwakke niet. Quirk et al. noemen voor zwakke appositie slechts voorbeelden van een NP met een CP: 7. His only interest in life, playing football, [has brought him many friends.] 8. [She has] a problem: should she charge them for the damage or should she forget about it? 9. Their solution, to appoint a committee, [is deplorable.] 10. For them to pay him a commission his own suggestion [seemed an acceptable idea.] Meyer noemt ook andere voorbeelden: 11. [The occupation of the territory by the colonial power was] wholly indefensible, the wicked work of evil men. 12. [Garret had a wife and four daughters] somewhere, in Worthing or Horsham or Lewes. Appositie markeerders Appositionele constructie kan ook expliciet weergegeven worden door markeerder of indicator. Burton-Roberts (1975): een constructie is alleen appositioneel als een appositie

3 markeerder mogelijk is, deze maakt de constructie immers tot appositie. Daarmee worden attributieve apposities uitgesloten. 13. * Mr. Pontefract, that s to say, an upholsterer, [has big feet.] 14. * [He introduced me to] the young man, that s to say, the heir to a fortune. Quirk et al. (1985): Over het algemeen worden appositie markeerders vóór de appositie in de zin geplaatst. Sommige markeerders kunnen (of moeten) achter de appositie staan. 15. Dickens s most productive period, that is (to say) the 1840s, [was a time when public demand for fiction was growing at a tremendous rate.] 16. Dickens s most productive period, the 1840s that is (to say), [ ] 17. Many people, including my sister, [won t forgive him for that.] 18. Many people, my sister included, [won t forgive him for that.] Hoewel de mogelijkheid tot plaatsing van de markeerder achter de appositie in het Nederlands beperkter is, komt het wel voor. Ook de Nederlandse variant van included, incluis, staat verplicht achteraan. 19. In bepaalde periodes, de jaren 1840 bijvoorbeeld, [steeg de vraag naar fictie enorm snel.] 20. Veel mensen, mijn zus incluis, [zullen hem dat niet vergeven.] Markeerders drukken de semantische relatie tussen anker en appositie uit. Niet elke markeerder kan daarom in alle appositionele constructies voorkomen. Semantische indeling Over het algemeen wordt de indeling van Quirk et al. (1985) gehanteerd. Zij gebruiken een indeling in drie groepen: equivalence, attribution en inclusion, met een schaal van meest naar minst appositief. Equivalence kan een markeerder hebben, attribution heeft nooit een markeerder en inclusion heeft (bijna) altijd een markeerder. Equivalence wordt verdeeld in vier groepen: appellation, identification, designation en reformulation. Bij appellation, benaming, zijn beide NP s definiet en is de tweede typisch een eigennaam: 21. The company commander, Captain Madison, [assembled his men.] Bij identification is het anker indefiniet en de appositie meer specifiek. Er is niet, zoals bij appellation, een één-op-één relatie tussen beide. 22. A company commander, Captain Madison, [assembled his men.] 23. [She still enjoys] such books: science fiction, detective stories, historical novels.

4 Designation is het omgekeerde van appellation en identification. De appositie is minder specifiek dan het anker. Beide NP s zijn over het algemeen definiet. 24. Captain Madison, the company commander, [assembled his men.] 25. Land, brains, wealth, technology in other words everything we need [are plentiful in our country.] Reformulation kan onderverdeeld worden in vier groepen: a) Herformulering op basis van taalkundige kennis: synonymie. 26. [This is what is sometimes referred to as] an intentional terminological inexactitude, in other words a lie. b) Herformulering op basis van feitenkennis: 27. Fred, or Ginger as he is usually called, [ ] Herformulering kan ook negatief zijn (en dan dus geen synonymie): 28. [You should have consulted] an ophthalmologist, not (that is) an optician, [for your eyes.] c) Precisering: 29. [They started going to] the church, the Catholic Church. 30. [You could cut the atmosphere with] a knife, (and) a blunt knife [at that.] 31. the women and only the women. d) Revisie: redactie, zelf-correctie van referent, nuance, vergissing of claim: 32. [His party controls] London, Greater London that is to say. 33. [She puts such] vitality (or rather virility) [into her play.] 34. The thirst thing, I mean the first thing [to remember is ] 35. All families, well those who can afford to, [will be going away for their holiday.] Attribution is predicatie, zoals vorige keer besproken in onderscheid met echte appositie, typisch met een indefiniete appositie: 36. Captain Madison, a company commander, [assembled his men.] 37. The house, an imposing building, [dominates the street.] Inclusion wordt opgedeeld in exemplification (38, 39) en particularization (40): 38. [They visited] several cities, for example Rome and Athens.

De appositie drukt een aparte propositie uit, vergelijkbaar met een presuppositie. De waarheid van het totaal is niet afhankelijk van de waarheid van de appositie. In feite bestaat de appositionele constructie uit twee zinnen: 41. [Did] Jane, my best student, [graduate with a distinction?] 42. Jane is my best student. 43. Did Jane graduate with a distinction?
