3 Merk op: onderscheid tussen zinnen waarbij slechts de volgorde van anker en appositie veranderd is: 35. A recent winner of the IL state lottery, Albert Svensson, (has announced that he plans to move to Bermuda.) De appositie in attributieve constructies is meestal onbepaald. Quirk et al. (1985) laten echter zien dat syntactisch bepaalde NP s semantisch onbepaald kunnen zijn en dan ook een attributieve constructie vormen: 37. (He introduced me to) the young woman, the heir to a fortune. 38. ( I don t know what I would have done if I had seen him, exclaimed) Mary, the prey of violent and obscure emotions. Burton-Roberts (1975): als bij onbepaalde NP s het lidwoord te parafraseren is door a certain, is sprake van echte appositie: 39. A soldier, a man in uniform, (came in just now.) Dat de attributieve constructie gezien wordt als een gereduceerde relatiefzin wijst op een zinsachtige structuur. Dit blijkt ook uit de mogelijkheid van zinsadverbia en floated quantifiers: 40. Pontefract, at that time our best upholsterer, (died at sixty.) 41. Pontefract, not our best upholsterer, (died at sixty.) 42. (They elected as chairman) Edna Jones, also a Cambridge graduate. 43. Quirk et al./ Burton-Roberts: onderscheid tussen attributieve apposities en adverbiale clauses zonder werkwoord met een concessieve of causale betekenis: 61. An even-tempered man, Paul nevertheless became extremely angry when he heard what had happened. 62. The heir to a fortune, her friend did not care about passing examinations. 63. A millionaire, Pontefract showered Money everywhere. Staat deze clause vooraan de zin, dan is het verschil duidelijk: het subject wordt nu ingevuld door het tweede deel van de constructie. Ook de komma(-intonatie) verdwijnt: 64. A lazy group, the farmers were poor. 65. A lazy group, the farmers, (was all that remained after the revolution.) De clause kan echter ook op de plaats van de appositie komen, waardoor het verschil zeer subtiel wordt en alleen uit de mogelijkheid van de concessieve of causale betekenis blijkt:

5 66. Ron Pall, a blatant liar, (used to be in my class at school.) 67. Ron Pall, a blatant liar, was expelled from the group. Volledig vs. gedeeltelijk Quirk et al.: onderscheid tussen volledige en gedeeltelijke appositie. Drie criteria voor appositie: I. Beide delen van de appositionele constructie kunnen weggelaten worden zonder de grammaticaliteit van de zin te veranderen. II. Elk deel vervult in de resulterende zinnen dezelfde syntactische functie. III. Er is geen verschil tussen de originele zin en één van de resulterende zinnen voor wat betreft de extralinguistische referentie. Volledige appositie voldoet aan alle criteria; gedeeltelijke aan één of twee niet. Hieronder voorbeelden van schending van respectievelijk criterium I, II en III: 68. An unusual present (was given to him for his birthday), a book on ethics. 69. Normal Jones, at one time a law student, (wrote several best-sellers). 70. The reason he gave, that he didn t notice the car till too late, (is unsatisfactory.) Meyer (1992): er is geen duidelijke grens tussen appositie en andere grammaticale relaties (zoals coördinatie, modificatie en complementatie), maar er zijn syntactische, semantische en pragmatische criteria, die een bepaalde constructie meer of minder appositief maken. Dit is een glijdende schaal. Niet-nominale appositie Burton-Roberts.: appositionele constructie blijft niet beperkt tot NP s. Ook volledige zinnen, werkwoorden, adjectieven en adverbialen: 71. You won t be totally alone, that s to say, there ll be others to help you. 72. (He) ran absolutely raced (up the hill.) 73. (They) sent him to Coventry, refused to speak to him. 74. (Under) normal, peacetime, (conditions.) 75. (They met) here, in London. Meyer: De meeste niet-nominale apposities bestaan uit zinnen: 76. I was going to make a very stupid remark. I was going to say that nothing that tastes nice is poisonous. Acuña-Fariña (1999): Eigenlijk moet alleen niet-nominale en niet-adverbiale appositie echte appositie genoemd worden. Hierbij is sprake van een zinsdomein ipv een lokaal domein. Er is geen sprake van equivalentie tussen anker en appositie, maar van volledige overname van de functie in de zin. Deze constructies lijken het meest op correctie.

6 Strict vs. zwak Quirk et al.: onderscheid tussen stricte en zwakke apposities. Be stricte appositie behoren anker en appositie tot dezelfde categorie; bij zwakke niet. Quirk et al. noemen voor zwakke appositie slechts voorbeelden van een NP met een CP: 77. His only interest in life, playing football, (has brought him many friends.) 78. (She has) a problem: should she charge them for the damage or should she forget about it? 79. Their solution, to appoint a committee, (is deplorable.) 80. For them to pay him a commission his own suggestion (seemed an acceptable idea.) Meyer noemt ook andere voorbeelden: 81. (The occupation of the territory by the colonial power was) wholly indefensible, the wicked work of evil men. 82. (Garret had a wife and four daughters) somewhere, in Worthing or Horsham or Lewes.
