3 Jaarverslag Turkije Instituut 2008 Annual Report Turkije Instituut 2008 In dit jaarverslag biedt het Turkije Instituut u een overzicht van de activiteiten van het afgelopen jaar. Het Turkije Instituut heeft zich in 2008 primair gericht op het vestigen van naamsbekendheid, zowel onder het algemene publiek als binnen een netwerk van relevante organisaties en instanties in Nederland, Vlaanderen, Brussel en Turkije. Daarnaast werkte het Instituut aan de opbouw van een database van geïnteresseerden en deskundigen in binnen- en buitenland, en aan de vormgeving en inhoudelijke invulling van de website ( In dit verslag worden bovenstaande speerpunten nader toegelicht. Aan het einde vindt u een overzicht van alle activiteiten. This report provides a comprehensive overview of the activities that were developed by the Turkije Instituut during the past year. Throughout 2008, the Turkije Instituut has focused on establishing a brand name, both among the general public and within a network of relevant organizations and institutions in the Netherlands, Flanders, Brussels, and Turkey. Alongside its activities, the institute has worked towards building a database of interested individuals and organizations, as well as Dutch and foreign experts. Also, the Instituut has created and written content for its website, (in Dutch). 3 This report shall take a closer look at the Turkije Instituut s output of A list of events is attached at the end of this report.

4 Voorwoord Foreword 4 Het Turkije Instituut kan terugkijken op een enerverend eerste (anderhalf) jaar. Nadat de initiatiefnemers in het voorjaar van 2007 van start gingen met de verwezenlijking van hun plannen, nam het Instituut in oktober 2007 zijn intrek in het Metropole Office in Den Haag - met dank aan de ondersteuning door de Gemeente Den Haag. Betrokkenen van het eerste uur committeerden zich aan het Instituut als sponsor of namen plaats in het bestuur of de wetenschappelijke adviesraad (WAR) van de stichting. Sinds de officiële opening op 27 november 2007 heeft het Instituut vele, uiteenlopende activiteiten geïnitieerd en (mede-) georganiseerd (meer dan 20) en een netwerk van geïnteresseerden opgebouwd. Onderliggende doelstelling was steeds om objectieve informatie over Turkije aan te bieden aan een breed Nederlands publiek. Wat heeft dat eerste jaar nu teweeggebracht? De belangstelling voor Turkije is in Nederland toegenomen. Dat is uiteraard niet alleen op het conto van het Instituut te schrijven. Toch menen we dat het Instituut hier wel degelijk een positieve rol in heeft. Sinds de toekenning van Turkije s kandidatuur in 1999 wordt het Turkse EU-toetredingsproces op de voet gevolgd door de Nederlandse media. De laatste jaren echter verbreedt de focus zich en is er ook aandacht voor de politiek-maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen in Turkije en de economische mogelijkheden die het land biedt. De dynamiek van Turkije wordt steeds meer onderkend, een ontwikkeling waaraan het Turkije Instituut actief een bijdrage levert. We hebben het afgelopen jaar samengewerkt met verschillende organisaties, instanties (waaronder diverse ministeries) en individuen (zie ook pagina 14). Vaak besteedden zij voor de eerste keer aandacht aan Turkije of in ieder geval aan thema s die nu eens niet direct aan het EU-toetredingsproces raakten. Zonder uitzondering hebben onze partnerorganisaties van 2008 aangegeven in 2009/2010 de samenwerking te willen continueren en structureel aandacht te willen schenken aan ontwikkelingen in Turkije. Dat heeft voor 2009 al geleid tot vastomlijnde plannen en initiatieven voor activiteiten met bijvoorbeeld debatcentrum Tumult (Utrecht), Stichting Kulsan en Felix Meritis (Amsterdam). Bezoekers van onze bijeenkomsten spreken hun waardering uit voor de onderwerpen die we aansnijden en de manier waarop we informatie over het voetlicht brengen. De kennis en berichtgeving over Turkije in Nederland laat soms te wensen over. Het Turkije Instituut heeft mijns inziens in zijn eerste jaar bewezen dat hiaat te kunnen vullen. De interesse voor onze activiteiten en de vele verzoeken om informatie wijzen bovendien op de behoefte aan een beter begrip van het veelzijdige en dynamische hedendaagse Turkije. The Turkije Instituut can look back on an exciting first year (and a half). In the spring of 2007, a small group of enthusiasts initiated the process of setting up a foundation and in October 2007 the Turkije Instituut staff moved into the Metropole Office Building in The Hague - thanks to the generous support of The Hague Municipality. Those who were involved from the very beginning committed themselves to the organization by taking up a seat in the institute s Board or Academic Advisory Council. Since the official opening on 27 November 2007, the institute has initiated and co-organized a wide variety of events (over 20) and built up an extensive network of interested individuals and organizations. The underlying aim was always to provide objective information about Turkey to a general public. What has the first year brought about? In the Netherlands, the interest in Turkey has grown. While this cannot, of course, be attributed solely to the efforts of the Turkije Instituut, we do feel the institute has contributed significantly to raising general awareness of contemporary Turkey. Since the EU Council s decision to grant Turkey candidacy status in October 2005, Dutch

5 media coverage on Turkey s accession process has improved. In recent years, however, the focus has expanded to include socio-political developments in Turkey and the economic possibilities the country has to offer. Thus, Turkey s dynamics are increasingly acknowledged, a development in which the Turkije Instituut is playing an active part. During 2008, we have cooperated with various organizations, institutions and individuals (see page 14). In many instances the respective organizations were dealing with either Turkey or topics other than EU-Turkey relations for the first time. Without exception our partners have indicated an interest in future cooperation and in keeping Turkey on their agenda. This has already led to a number of projects and initiatives for , e.g. in conjunction with Tumult debating centre in Utrecht and Kulsan Foundation in Amsterdam. Audiences that have attended our activities have expressed their appreciation for our approach of (often unfamiliar) themes relating to Turkey. In the Netherlands, knowledge and media coverage of Turkey is sometimes lacking. In my view, during the last year the Turkije Instituut has proven to be able to fill this gap. The interest for our activities and the many requests for information strongly indicate a need for a better understanding of the diversity and dynamics of contemporary Turkey. 5 F.A. 6 Activiteiten 2008 Activities Het Turkije Instituut organiseerde het afgelopen jaar zowel publieksbijeenkomsten en expertenconferenties als activiteiten voor en in samenwerking met sponsoren. In 2008, the Turkije Instituut organized public events and expert conferences as well as events catering for and in cooperation with sponsors. Publieksbijeenkomsten Public events Het Turkije Instituut organiseerde in 2008 in totaal twaalf publieksbijeenkomsten. Zeven ervan organiseerde het Instituut in opdracht van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. De doelstelling van het project was om een breed Nederlands publiek te informeren over politieke en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen in het moderne Turkije. Uitgangspunt voor alle publieksactiviteiten was de samenwerking met partnerorganisaties om naamsbekendheid te genereren en te profiteren van de achterban van de desbetreffende organisatie. Inhoudelijk was het streven de economische en sociaal-politieke ontwikkelingen in Turkije voor het voetlicht te brengen. Dat resulteerde in thematisch uiteenlopende bijeenkomsten. Gemene deler was echter steeds de actualiteitswaarde en relevantie voor een breed geïnteresseerd publiek. Bovendien identificeerde het Instituut een aantal kernthema s die het onderwerp waren van zowel een publieksbijeenkomst als een expertenconferentie: de betrekkingen tussen Turkije en de Europese Unie, de rol van religie in de Turkse samenleving, en de positie van vrouwen in Turkije. The Turkije Instituut organized twelve public events in total, seven of which were part of a project commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project objective was to disseminate information about current social and political developments in Turkey amongst the general Dutch public. The starting point for all events was collaboration with partner organizations in order to both establish a brand name and benefit from theirs. Regarding themes and topics, the aim was to bring economic and socio-political developments in Turkey to the fore. As a result, the meetings were thematically diverse. However, the common denominator was always the news value and relevance of the activity for a generally interested, non-expert audience. Also, the institute identified a number of core themes as central to both the public and expert meetings: relations between Turkey and the EU, the role of religion in Turkish society, and the position of women in Turkey. Taksim - Kars. Modernisering, democratie en de toekomst van Turkije Taksim - Kars. Modernisation, democracy and the future of Turkey Op 31 januari vond de eerste publieksbijeenkomst van het Turkije Instituut plaats in de Lutherse Kerk in Utrecht. In samenwerking met debatcentrum Tumult organiseerde het Instituut een avond over democratisering in Turkije. Gastsprekers waren hoogleraar Internationale Betrekkingen Baskın Oran en Europarlementariër Joost Lagendijk. De avond trok ongeveer 100 bezoekers. The Turkije Instituut s first public event took place on 31 January in the Lutheran Church in Utrecht. In cooperation with debating centre Tumult, the institute organized an evening on democratisation in Turkey. Guest speakers were professor of International Relations at Ankara University Baskın Oran and Europarliamentarian Joost Lagendijk. Number of attendees: ca. 100.

7 Over de grenzen van Turkije Beyond the borders of Turkey In Studium Generale Leiden vond het Turkije begin 2008 een waardevolle partner. In de Studium lezingenreeks Over de grenzen van Turkije verzorgde het Instituut drie van in totaal zeven goed bezochte avonden in Leiden. Op 27 februari 2008 debatteerden Joost Lagendijk (Europarlementariër GroenLinks) en René Couperus (Wiardi Beckman Stichting) over Turkije en de EU. Op 5 maart gaf Kutsal Yesilkagit (Universiteit Utrecht) inzicht in de civiel-militaire verhoudingen in Turkije. Op 12 maart sprak Sinan Ülgen van de Turkse denktank EDAM over Turkije s relatie met Europa. As part of the Studium Generale Leiden (Leiden University) series Beyond the borders of Turkey and in close cooperation with Studium Generale, the Turkije Instituut organized three (out of seven) well-attended meetings in Leiden. On 27 February, Joost Lagendijk (Europarliamentarian Dutch GreenLeft) and René Couperus (Wiardi Beckman Foundation) debated the pros and cons of EU-membership for Turkey. On March 5, public administration expert Kutsal Yesilkagit (Utrecht University) provided insight in civic-military relations in Turkey. On 12 March, Sinan Ülgen of Turkish think-tank EDAM spoke about Turkey s relationship with Europe. Erik-Jan Zürcher, Ümit Cizre Turkse politiek Turkish Politics In mei en juni organiseerde het Instituut twee bijeenkomsten over het Turkse politieke landschap in Den Haag. Columnist Mustafa Akyol (Turkish Daily News) sprak op 28 mei over de zogeheten sluitingszaak tegen regeringspartij AKP. Op 18 juni volgde politicologe Ümit Cizre (Bilkent Üniversitesi) met een betoog over de huidige polarisering in Turkije. Beide redelijk bezochte (40 personen) bijeenkomsten vonden plaats in Novotel in Den Haag. 7 In May and June, the Turkije Instituut organized two meetings in The Hague on the Turkish political landscape. On 28 May, columnist Mustafa Akyol (Turkish Daily News) spoke about the so-called closure case against the ruling AKP. On 18 June, political scientist Ümit Cizre (Bilkent University) followed suit with a lecture on current political polarisation in Turkey. Both reasonably attended (40 persons) events took place at Novotel, The Hague.

8 8 Film: *Mutluluk Film: *Mutluluk Op 21 mei organiseerde het Turkije Instituut de vertoning van *Mutluluk *(2006) in filmtheater Rialto in Amsterdam. Mutluluk is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Ömer Zülfü Livaneli over eerwraak en de botsing tussen traditie en moderniteit en was in Turkije een groot succes. De vertoning trok een volle zaal (ca. 100 personen). On 28 May, the Turkije Instituut organized a screening of *Mutluluk/Bliss *(2006) in film theatre Rialto in Amsterdam. The film is based on the book of Ömer Zülfü Livaneli of the same title and deals with honour killings and the clash of tradition and modernity in Turkey. A huge hit in Turkey, the screening drew a full house in Rialto with ca. 100 viewers. Turkey: Secularism challenged / Publieksbijeenkomst & expertenconferentie Turkey: Secularism challenged / Public meeting & expert conference Op 9 en 10 oktober 2008 organiseerde het Turkije Instituut in samenwerking met het International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) een publiekslezing en expertenconferentie over secularisme en islam in Turkije. Op donderdagavond 9 oktober sprak Hakan Yavuz (University of Utah) in de Beurs van Berlage over secularisme, islam en moderniteit. De volgende dag discussieerden deskundigen over de AKP, de Fethullah Gülen-beweging en de positie van Alevieten in Turkije. Het seminar vond plaats in Leiden en werd bijgewoond door zo n twintig onderzoekers, studenten en geïnteresseerden. In collaboration with the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM), the Turkije Instituut organized a public meeting and an expert conference on secularism and Islam in Turkey. On Thursday evening, 9 October, Hakan Yavuz (University of Utah) lectured on secularism, Islam and modernity (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam). The following day, a group of experts discussed the AKP, the Fethullah Gülen movement and the position of Alevis in Turkey. The expert seminar took place in Leiden and was attended by ca. twenty researchers and students. Kebab & een koekje bij de thee Kebab & a tea biscuit Op 30 oktober werkte het Instituut mee aan Kebab & een koekje bij de thee, een avond over beeldvorming over Turkije die plaatsvond in de Arminiuskerk in Rotterdam. Partners waren Fatusch Productions en Kosmopolis Rotterdam. Opkomst: ca. 50 personen. On 30 October, the Turkije Instituut contributed to Kebab & a tea biscuit, an event on perspectives on and biases about Turkey. The evening took place in the Arminius Church in Rotterdam and was attended by approximately 50 people. Partner organisations were Fatusch Productions and Kosmopolis Rotterdam. Women s Activism / Publieksbijeenkomst & expertenconferentie Women s Activism / Public meeting & expert conference Op 7 november organiseerde het Turkije Instituut een publiekslezing en expertenconferentie over de positie van vrouwen in Turkije. Emine Bozkurt (Europarlementariër PvdA) en Froukje Santing (bestuurslid TI) speelden een belangrijke rol in de voorbereiding van het programma. Hogeschool InHolland Den Haag bood huisvesting aan voor de conferentie. Yakın Ertürk, VN Speciale Rapporteur over Geweld jegens Vrouwen en hoogleraar sociologie, trad op als spreker voor zowel de conferentie overdag als de lezing s avonds in Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. De conferentie werd bijgewoond door een veertigtal beleidsmedewerkers uit het veld, onderzoekers en studenten. De lezing werd bijgewoond door ongeveer 120 geïnteresseerden.

On headscarves in France, Turkey and the Netherlands Op 9 december organiseerde het Instituut samen met debatcentrum Tumult een avond over de hoofddoekenkwestie en de rol van religie in de publieke ruimte in Turkije, Nederland en Frankrijk. On 7 November, the Turkije Instituut organized a public meeting and an expert conference on the position of women in Turkey. Emine Bozkurt (Europarliamentarian Dutch Labour Party) and Froukje Santing (Board member Turkije Instituut) aided in preparing the programme. Hogeschool InHolland (University of Applied Sciences) kindly hosted the conference. Yakın Ertürk, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, acted as the main speaker both during the conference and the evening lecture in Felix Meritis, Amsterdam. The conference was attended by ca. 40 policy advisors working in the field, as well as other researchers and students. The evening lecture drew an audience of ca In cooperation with debating centre Tumult, the institute organized a debate on 9 December on the headscarf issue and the role of religion in the public space in Turkey, France and the Netherlands 9 De Droom van Osman Osman s Dream Op 4 december organiseerde het Instituut in samenwerking met Mets&Schilt Uitgevers de presentatie van de Nederlandse vertaling van Osman s Dream (De Droom van Osman) van Caroline Finkel in Amsterdam. Together with publisher Mets & Schilt, the Turkije Instituut organized the presentation of the Dutch translation of Caroline Finkel s Osman s Dream (De Droom van Osman) in Amsterdam.

10 Expertenconferenties en speciale bijeenkomsten Conferences and special events 10 Naast de bovengenoemde expertenbijeenkomsten (Turkey: Secularism Challenged en Women s Activism) organiseerde het Turkije Instituut een aantal speciale/besloten bijeenkomsten. Apart from the aforementioned conferences (Turkey: Secularism Challenged and Women s Activism), the Turkije Instituut organized several special/closed events. Turkey Seminar 2008 Turkey Seminar 2008 In samenwerking met sponsors KPMG en Fortis organiseerde het Turkije Instituut op 19 februari 2008 een Turkey Seminar. Het seminar vond plaats in het hoofdkantoor van KPMG in Amstelveen. Hoofdspreker was Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ, bestuurslid van Doğan Holding en voorzitter van TÜSİAD (Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association). Het seminar werd bijgewoond door zo n 100 vertegenwoordigers van Nederlandse bedrijven geïnteresseerd in het ontplooien van activiteiten in/met Turkije. at Doğan Holding and head of TÜSİAD (Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association), was the keynote speaker. Around 100 representatives of Dutch corporations interested in developing and expanding activities in Turkey, attended the seminar. Hugh Pope, Cyprus Hugh Pope, Cyprus Op 4 maart organiseerde het Turkije Instituut een besloten bijeenkomst met journalist en onderzoeker Hugh Pope (International Crisis Group, Wall Street Journal) over de Cyprus kwestie. Ongeveer 20 genodigden namen deel aan de levendige discussie in de vergaderzaal van het Metropole Office (waar het Instituut gevestigd is). On 4 March the Turkije Instituut held a closed conference on the Cyprus issue. Around 20 invitees participated in a lively discussion featuring journalist Hugh Pope (International Crisis Group, Wall Street Journal). The meeting took place in the conference room of the Metropole Office, where the Turkije Instituut is located. On 19 February 2009, the Turkije Instituut organized a business seminar on Turkey. Organized in cooperation with sponsors KPMG and Fortis, the seminar took place at KPMG headquarters in Amsterdam. Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ, board of directors member Sinan Ülgen, Kamercies Buitenlandse Zaken en Europese Samenwerking Sinan Ülgen, Parliamentary Commitees Foreign Affairs and European Cooperation Tijdens een besloten bijeenkomst op 13 maart sprak Sinan Ülgen voor de Vaste Kamercommissies Buitenlandse Zaken en Europese Samenwerking. During a closed conference on 13 March, Sinan Ülgen spoke to the Commitees for Foreign Affairs and European Cooperation. Ali Babacan Ali Babacan Op 26 maart hield minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Ali Babacan op VNO-NCW in Den Haag een lezing over het Turkse buitenlandse beleid.

11 Het Turkije Instituut organiseerde de bijeenkomst in samenwerking net VNO-NCW en Instituut Clingendael. De bijeenkomst werd bezocht door ruim 80 personen. On 26 March, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan held a lecture on Turkish foreign policy. The event, which took place at VNO-NCW, was organised by the Turkije Instituut in cooperation with VNO-NCW and the Clingendael Institute. The lecture was attended by more than 80 people. Triangel Berlijn Triangle Berlin Het Turkije Instituut leverde een belangrijke bijdrage aan de totstandkoming van een seminar voor zo n 25 Nederlandse, Turkse en Duitse journalisten, wetenschappers en studenten over media en de multiculturele dialoog. Het seminar werd in opdracht van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken georganiseerd door Pilgrims Consultancy en vond plaats op de Nederlandse Ambassade te Berlijn op 29 en 30 mei. The Turkije Instituut made a significant contribution to the realization of a seminar for about 25 Dutch, Turkish and German journalists, scientists and students. Media and multicultural dialogue were the main themes of the seminar, which was organized by Pilgrims Consultancy by order of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and took place on 29 and 30 May at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Berlin. Turkey, the European Union and enlargement fatigue Turkey, the European Union and enlargement fatigue Op 26 en 27 juni organiseerde het Turkije Instituut in samenwerking met het Centre for European Security Studies (CESS) een expertenconferentie over de betrekkingen tussen Turkije en de Europese Unie. In Kasteel Oud-Poelgeest in Oegstgeest kwamen zo n 40 deskundigen bijeen om te debatteren over het toetredingsproces, veiligheidsvraagstukken en democratisering in Turkije. On 26 and 27 June the Turkije Instituut organized an expert conference on the interrelations of Turkey and the European Union. The conference took place in cooperation with the Centre for European Security Studies (CESS). Around 40 specialists gathered at Castle Oud Poelgeest in Oegstgeest in order to debate the Turkish accession process, security issues and democratization. Lunchmeeting biculturele high potentials en Turkse opiniemakers Luncheon bicultural high potentials and Turkish opinion makers Op verzoek van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken verzorgde het Turkije Instituut op 3 december een lunchmeeting tussen jonge 11 Ümit Cizre, BuZa Ümit Cizre, Foreign Affairs Op 19 juni organiseerde het Turkije Instituut een bijeenkomst voor ca. 80 beleidsmedewerkers van Buitenlandse Zaken met Ümit Cizre. On 19 June the Turkije Instituut organized a meeting for around 80 policy officers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting featured Ümit Cizre, professor of political science at Bilkent University.

De Turkse delegatie (8 personen) bezocht Nederland op uitnodiging van Buitenlandse Zaken om een beeld te krijgen van de Nederlandse multiculturele samenleving. At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Turkije Instituut hosted a luncheon on 3 December, which brought together young opinion makers from Turkey and Dutch high-potentials with a Turkish background. The Turkish delegation consisted of 8 people visiting the Netherlands at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation s mission was to acquire an insight into Dutch multicultural society. Stageproject HBO-studenten Internship project HBO students In samenwerking met Hogeschool InHolland Den Haag initieerde het Turkije Instituut een stageproject voor HBO-studenten. Turks- Nederlandse en Nederlandse studenten Management, Marketing en HR lopen gedurende 4 maanden stage bij Turkse vestigingen van sponsoren van het Instituut (zie pagina 16). Het Turkije Instituut en Hogeschool InHolland Den Haag werkten samen aan de totstandkoming van het project dat officieel startte op 5 maart Onderen andere de Turkse vestigingen van sponsoren Aegon en Eureko nemen stagiairs op. In cooperation with Hogeschool InHolland (The Hague University of Applied Sciences), the Turkije Instituut initiated an internship project for Higher Vocational Education (HBO) students. Turkish-Dutch and Dutch students of Management, Marketing and Human Resources receive on-the-job training for the duration of 4 months at several Turkish branches of the institute s sponsors (see page 16). The Turkije Instituut and Hogeschool InHolland cooperated in the realization of the project, which officially commenced on 5 March The Turkish branches of Aegon and Eureko, among others, accept interns. Sponsoractiviteiten Sponsor activities In de afgelopen anderhalf jaar heeft het Turkije Instituut in samenwerking met sponsoren verschillende activiteiten georganiseerd. In de eerste plaats was dat het Turkey Seminar 2008 (zie pagina 10) met KPMG en Fortis. Het Instituut verleende haar medewerking aan voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten van Aegon en ING met hun Turkse counterparts. Op 16 juni 2008 organiseerde het Instituut in samenwerking met ING een sponsorlunch. In november 2008 vertrok een omvangrijke Nederlandse onderwijsen handelsmissie naar Turkije. Ook het Turkije Instituut was aanwezig, onder meer voor het officieel ondertekenen van samenwerkingsovereenkomst voor het stageproject voor HBO ers. During the past one and a half years, the Turkije Instituut has organised several activities in association with sponsors. The Turkey Seminar 2008 (see page 10) was set up in cooperation with KPMG and Fortis. Furthermore, the Turkije Instituut took part in the organization of informational meetings between KPMG as well as Fortis and their Turkish counterparts. On 16 June, the institute organized a sponsor luncheon in conjunction with ING. In November 2009 a sizeable Dutch educational and trade mission visited Turkey. The Turkije Instituut was also present, a.o. for the official signing of the partnership agreement on the internship project. Maar ook geschiedenis, film, arbeidsmarkt, studie/stage in Turkije en de Turkse economie. Het Instituut bemiddelde bovendien tussen vraag naar en aanbod van informatie door uit het netwerk van deskundigen te putten voor aanvragen voor lezingen en bijdrages aan tijdschriften. Zie het overzicht vanaf pagina 21. The Turkije Instituut contributed to the debate on (developments in) Turkey and the Netherlands in various ways. Staff members of the Institute, director Lily Sprangers in particular, acted as guest speakers on several occasion. The predominant themes were the relations between Turkey and the EU/Europe and social-political developments within Turkey. History, film, the labour market, education in Turkey and the Turkish economy were, however, also covered. Furthermore, the Turkije Instituut mediated between demand and supply of information by drawing on its network of experts upon requests for lectures and contributions to publications. These activities are outlined from page 21 on.

15 Netwerk Network Na de openingsbijeenkomst op 27 november 2007 beschikte het Instituut over een adressenbestand van enige honderden individuen, organisaties en instellingen. Het Instituut heeft het afgelopen jaar veel aandacht besteed aan de verdere opbouw van een database van geïnteresseerden en relevante organisaties en instanties. Deze database telt inmiddels (februari 2009) ruim 600 adressen. In het afgelopen jaar heeft het Instituut viermaal een digitale nieuwsbrief verstuurd. Het streven is om tweemaandelijks een nieuwsbrief te versturen. De digitale nieuwsbrief van het Instituut bereikt inmiddels eveneens ruim 600 adressen. Ook beschikt het Instituut over een (groeiend) netwerk van deskundigen die, via bemiddeling van het Turkije Instituut, bereid zijn aan informatieverzoeken van publiek en pers te voldoen. the newsletter, which currently reaches over 700 addresses, on a bimonthly basis. Furthermore, the Turkije Instituut has at its disposal a (growing) network of experts, who, through mediation of the institute, are prepared to accommodate both the general public and the media. The Board, the Academic Advisory Council and the director have made an effort to consolidate both the domestic and the international position of the Turkije Instituut. As of today, the institute is a wellknown point of reference for (Dutch) media and student bodies as well as private citizens. Consequently, the number of requests for contributions to periodicals, radio and TV programmes, lectures and debates is gradually increasing. Het Bestuur, de leden van de WAR en de directeur hebben zich het afgelopen jaar ingezet om de positie van het Instituut zowel nationaal als internationaal te bestendigen. Inmiddels weten de (Nederlandse) media, studentenverenigingen en particulieren de weg naar het Turkije Instituut te vinden. Dat resulteert in een toenemende vraag naar bijdrages aan tijdschriften en radioprogramma s, lezingen en debatten. Voorts onderhoudt het Instituut goede contacten met relevante ministeries (Buitenlandse Zaken, Economische Zaken/EVD, Justitie, Sociale Zaken, Onderwijs, Cultuur & Wetenschap, Verkeer & Waterstaat, Landbouw, Natuur & Voedselkwaliteit) evenals de Nederlandse vertegenwoordiging in Turkije (CG te Istanbul en ambassade te Ankara). The foundation of the Turkije Instituut in November 2007 was made possible by contributions of the Dutch business community and The Hague Municipality. The participant corporations have committed themselves for the duration of two to three years, partly depending on the level of success of the institute s activities. Also, The Hague Municipality provides technical support. 16 In early June 2008, the Turkije Instituut s website ( was officially launched. The website is the virtual gateway to the Turkije Instituut and a hub for information on Turkey. In the course of the year, the website has been supplemented with articles on various subjects such as Turkey and the EU, the Kurds, Ottoman history, honour killings, and the position of women in Turkey. The number of visitors to the site is steadily increasing: in September 2008 the website had been accessed by 800 unique visitors. In October and November this number had risen to almost 1400 and 1500 respectively. In May 2008 the institute s first digital newsletter, which is linked to the website s content, was despatched.
