Allereerst de aankondiging van het Dipteraweekeinde dat van 24 tot 26 mei 2002 in de Weerribben wordt gehouden en waar iedereen natuurlijk naar toe gaat! Zie hiervoor bladzijde 25! Verder heeft de redactie wederom een familiespecialist zo ver weten krijgen een inleidend verhaal te schrijven. Deze keer is het Herman de Jong die met een stuk over Tipulidae een nieuwe nederlandse tabel aankondigt. Naast de verzoeken van medewerking van Bart Achterkamp (Episyrphus balteatus) en Bob van Aartsen en John Smit (boorvliegen) tevens het verslag van een onderzoekje naar dipterenbezoek op schermbloemen van Alexander Deelman. En gelukkig is de rubriek Literatuur terug: een overzicht van meer dan elf bladzijden dipteralitereratuur van Pjotr Oosterbroek en een recensie van Liane Lankreijer. 2 EEN NIEUWE TABEL TOT DE NEDERLANDSE TIPULIDAE IN AANTOCHT door Herman de Jong Abstract: An overview of the Tipulidae genera occurring in the Netherlands and the rest of the world is presented. Present and past research in the Netherlands and some ecological observations are discussed. Inleiding Tot de meest opvallende groepen van muggen horen ongetwijfeld de Tipulidae, de langpootmuggen. Met hun lange, afhangende poten zijn de doorgaans grote muggen in vlucht direct herkenbaar als Tipulidae. Een met krabbelende poten tegen een vensterraam heen en weer zwalkende langpootmug is een voor iedereen bekend verschijnsel. De vleugelslag van de grotere soorten produceert een duidelijk waarneembaar klapperend geluid waardoor zo n tipulide, als hij niet al direct werd opgemerkt, alsnog de aandacht trekt. Daarentegen kunnen ze in rust, zeker wanneer de vleugels over elkaar worden geslagen, goed gecamoufleerd zijn. Anders dan menigeen denkt steken niet alle muggen en totdenietstekendehorenookdetipulidae.infeitezijn de meeste soorten voor de mens volkomen onschadelijk en dat is meteen de voornaamste reden waarom deze groep relatief weinig aandacht krijgt. Van de vele beschreven soorten is slechts een handjevol schadelijk indelandbouwenoverdiesoortenzijndanookmeer gedetailleerde studies beschikbaar. Van de andere soorten is veelal alleen het volwassen insect beschreven enisonbekendhoedelarvestadiaendepoperuitzien, laatstaandatbekendiswatdeecologievanzo nsoort is. Overigens is deze situatie in Noordwest-Europa nog relatief gunstig omdat van zo n 20% van de hier voorkomende Tipulidae de pre-adulte stadia werden bestudeerd. Wereldwijd zijn er ongeveer soorten Tipulidae beschreven, maar in Nederland komen minder dan 100 soorten voor. Vele hiervan zijn met enige oefening in hetveldopnaamtebrengen:waarzemisschienophet eerste oog nogal uniform lijken, blijken de in Nederland voorkomende Tipulidae bij nadere beschouwing een grote kleur- en vormenrijkdom te vertonen. Tipulidae kunnen in een reeks van verschillende biotopen voorkomenenookditaspectmaaktzetoteenbijzonder inspirerend onderwerp van studie. De larven van Nederlandse soorten vertonen een grote schakering in habitatkeuze: sommige zijn volledig aquatisch, andere semi-aquatisch tot terrestrisch, of volledig terrestrisch maar levend in verschillende bodemtypen, terwijl weer andere houtbewonend zijn. Voor zover bekend leven de larven van Tipulidae doorgaans van afgestorven plantenmateriaal, maar sommige leven van de jonge scheuten van levende planten. Tipulidae die tot de laatste categorie behoren kunnen grote economische schade veroorzaken; in Nederland zijn dit vooral Tipula (Tipula) oleracea en T. (T.) paludosa. De volwassen insecten zijn doorgaans in beschaduwde en vochtige biotopen te vinden, slechts enkele soorten zijn aangepast aan drogere omstandigheden. In Nederland worden bijvoorbeeld Nephrotoma submaculosa en Tipula(Odonatisca) nodicornis in drogere en zandige omgeving aangetroffen. Verspreiding internationaal Vertegenwoordigers van de Tipulidae komen voor van de toendra tot aan de evenaar. Zoals in andere diergroepen zijn sommige hogere taxa in hun verspreiding beperkt tot een continent of een deel daarvan. Zo kent Afrika exclusieve taxa als Dolichopeza (Afrodolichopeza), Dolichopeza (Trichodolichopeza), Goniotipula, Zuid Amerika Elnoretta, Tipula (Eumicrotipula), Tipula (Pectinotipula), en Valdiviana, Australië Acracantha, Clytocosmus, Leptotarsus (Phymatopsis) en Platyphasia en Nieuw Zeeland Austrotipula, Ischnotoma ( Aurotipula), I. ( Chlorotipula) en Leptotarsus ( Maoritipula). Exclusief voor het Noordelijk Halfrond zijn onder andere Angarotipula, Brithura, Dictenidia, Prionocera, Tanyptera en Tipula (Lunatipula). Nederlandse fauna De Nederlandse Tipulidae-fauna telt negen genera, waarvan er enkele onderverdeeld zijn in subgenera (tabel1opbladzijde6).uitnederlandwerdentotnu toe 91 soorten bekend. De meeste hebben hier gevestigde populaties, andere zijn alleen bekend van incidentele vangsten. Hier gevestigde soorten zijn soms zeer algemeen, zoals de massaal in graslanden voorkomende Tipula (Tipula) oleracea en T. (T.) paludosa, andere daarentegen schijnen in uitzonderlijk kleine populaties voor te komen en worden bijzonder De Vliegenmepper (2002, nummer 1) 2

3 weinig aangetroffen. Voorbeelden van de laatste zijn Nephrotoma croceiventris lindneri, N. lamellata, Tipula (Lunatipula) selene, Tipula (Platytipula) autumnalis, Tipula(Pterelachisus) pauli en T.(P.) winthemi. Enkele soorten werden in het verleden weinig verzameld en hadden daardoor de reputatie zeldzaam te zijn. Door vangsten met behulp van malaisevallen kwam in dit beeld voor sommige soorten verandering: Nephrotoma aculeata en Tanyptera nigricornis bijvoorbeeld blijken lokaal helemaal niet zo zeldzaam te zijn, waarbij Tanyptera nigricornis ook nog eens van een flink aantal locaties bekend is. In hoeverre deze verschuiving in zeldzaamheid een gevolg is van een natuurlijke toename van aantal en omvang van populaties of een artefact is van gehanteerde vangstmethodes is voorlopig een onderwerp van speculatie. Tot de dwaalgasten horen de in Noord Amerika voorkomende Nephrotoma ferruginea, de Iberische Tipula(Acutipula) repanda en de West-MediterraneTipula(Tipula) mediterranea die alle van een enkel exemplaar in Nederlandse omgeving bekend zijn(oosterbroek& De Jong 2001). Dergelijke incidentele vangsten van uitheemse soorten, met name van soorten afkomstig uit het West-Mediterrane gebied, zijn vaker te verwachten en zullen van tijd tot tijd worden gedaan. Omdat het Mediterrane gebied enkele honderden soorten van Tipulidae telt, is een goede kennis van die fauna een voorwaarde om zo n incidentele vondst in Nederland vast te kunnen stellen. Interessanter dan dergelijke toevallige bezoekers zijn wellicht soorten waarvan bekend is dat ze in de ons omringende landen voorkomen. Met name in de subgenera Pterelachisus en Savtshenkia van het genus Tipula kunnen door natuurlijke uitbreiding van arealen soorten in de Nederlandse fauna opduiken die hier tot nu toe nog niet werden aangetroffen. Herkenning Over het algemeen zijn Tipulidae grote, lang en slank gebouwde muggen met bijzonder lange poten. Nu zijn er enkele andere groepen van Diptera waarop deze algemene karakteristiek van toepassing is en daarom volgt hieronder een opsomming van die kenmerken die zekerheidgevenofeenmugwelofniettotdetipulidae moet worden gerekend. Onderzoek in Nederland In Nederland wordt al lang onderzoek gedaan aan Tipulidae. In de negentiende eeuw betrof dit vooral het scoren van soorten voor de fauna, waarbij overigens onder de verzamelnaam Tipulidae vertegenwoordigers van de huidige families Cylindrotomidae, Dixidae, Limoniidae, Pediciidae, Ptychopteridae, Tipulidae en Trichoceridae bijeen werden gebracht. De negentiendeeeuwse overzichten van Van der Wulp& Snellen van Vollenhoven, Van der Wulp en Van der Wulp & De Meijere laten een gestage toename zien van het aantal voor Nederland genoteerde soorten van Tipulidae in de huidige strikte zin. Overigens was de kennis toen nog zobeperkt,datpersoortveelalinenkelewoordenkon worden aangegeven welke Nederlandse exemplaren bekend waren. Hetfaunistischwerk,datindeeerstedecenniavande twintigsteeeuwvooralinhandenwasvanj.c.h.de Meijere, resulteerde in de fameuze Naamlijst van Nederlandsche Diptera van De Meijere(1939). Hierin worden 60 soorten van Tipulidae s.str. genoemd. Naast faunistisch onderzoek werden in de twintigste eeuw ook meer specialistische studies aan Tipulidae gedaan. W. H. de Jong (1925) promoveerde aan de toenmalige Landbouwhogeschool te Wageningen op een studie over emelten en hun bestrijding. Theowald van Leeuwen(als Broeder Theowald; 1957b) publiceerde een studie aan de larven en poppen van de West- Europese Tipulidae. Dit werk, dat veel tot dan toe onbekende informatie bevat, geldt nog steeds als het uitgangspunt voor de kennis van larven en poppen van de Europese Tipulidae. Tijdens de voorbereiding van zijn publicatie over larven en poppen verzamelde Theowald van Leeuwen veel materiaal en de zo verkregen informatie over de Nederlandse fauna legde hij vervolgens vast in een uitgave van de Wetenschappelijke Mededelingen van de KNNV (Theowald 1957a). De WM bevat een tabel voor de determinatie van de toen bekende Nederlandse Tipulidae, aangevuld met informatie over biologie, verspreiding, habitat en vliegtijden per soort. Theowald van Leeuwen richtte aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam een onderzoeksgroep op die de systematiek en biogeografie van de Tipulidae tot onderwerp had. Hetvoertteveromhieralhetwerkvandezegroepde revuetelatenpasserenenikzaldevelepublicatieshier niet opnemen, maar het belangrijkste kan kort worden genoemd. Zelf verzorgde Theowald onder meer de voltooiing van het Tipulidae-deel van Lindners Die Fliegen der palaearktischen Region. Jos den Hollander bestudeerde medio zeventiger jaren de fenologie van de in Nederland voorkomende soorten van het subgenus Tipula. Pjotr Oosterbroek begon in diezelfde tijd aan zijn onderzoek aan het genus Nephrotoma, wat zou resulteren in een lange reeks van artikelen waarin de West-Palaearctische, Japanse en Noord-Amerikaanse soorten van het genus gedetaileerd werden behandeld. Samen met Theowald verzorgde Pjotr Oosterbroek een 10-delige serie over de biogeografie van de West- Palaearctische Tipulidae. Een studie naar de fylogenie van de Tipuloidea op grond van de pre-adulte stadia werd eveneens onder beider auteurschap gepubliceerd. Nog weer later publiceerde Pjotr Oosterbroek samen met Greg Courtney de eerste met computerprogramma s berekende analyse van de verwantschapsrelaties van de families van de muggen (zie ook Oosterbroek 1995). Ook voor het verzorgen van catalogi was deze onderzoeksgroep van groot belang: Oosterbroek en Theowald schreven het Tipuloidea-deel van de Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera, terwijl Oosterbroek de Tipulidae sensu lato De Vliegenmepper (2002, nummer 1) 4

5 voordecatalogofthedipteraoftheaustralasianand Oceanian Regions voor zijn rekening nam. Inmiddels beschikt Pjotr Oosterbroek over een uitgebreide taxonomische en geografische database waarin alle beschreven soorten van Tipuloidea zijn opgenomen, circa soorten in totaal. Ida Tangelder werkte enkele jaren aan een fraaie studie naar de Nephrotoma dorsalis groep, en Dick Vermoolen publiceerde een revisie van de Tipula (Acutipula) maxima groep. Herman de Jong schreef een aantal artikelen over met name West-Mediterrane Tipulidae. Nieuwe Nederlandse tabel Naast de meer omvattende publicaties van Theowald (1957a) en Oosterbroek& De Jong(2001) bestaat de specifiek op Nederland betrekking hebbende literatuur vooral uit korte meldingen van nieuwe soorten voor de fauna. Al langer bestond de behoefte aan een geactualiseerd determinatiewerk voor de in Nederland voorkomende Tipulidae en het is dan ook verheugend dat de redactie van de Wetenschappelijke Mededelingen vandeknnvonsverzochtheeftomzo npublicatiete schrijven. Bestaande tabellen tot de Noordwest- Europese Tipulidae zijn doorgaans gedateerd, met name waar het de nomenclatuur aangaat, en vaak onnodig ingewikkeld. Verder zijn ze vanuit een Nederlands perspectief gezien vaak te uitgebreid, waarbij nog komt dat de betere tabellen in het Russisch zijn gepubliceerd. Een nieuwe publicatie met tabellen tot de Nederlandse Tipulidae biedt de mogelijkheid om een breed publiek te bereiken en de Nederlandse fauna als speciaal onderwerp van onderzoek voor het voetlicht te brengen. Al enkele jaren geleden werden voor eigen gebruik opzetjes gemaakt om het determineren van materiaal te vereenvoudigen. De grote hoeveelheden Tipulidae die Volkert van de Goot vanaf het eind van de tachtiger jaren uit malaisevalmonsters sorteerde vormden een andere bron van inspiratie. Inmiddels zijn de basistekstenvoordetabellentotopdesoortenvande verschillende genera en subgenera gereed. Dick Langerak, de aan het Zoölogisch Museum van de Universiteit van Amsterdam verbonden tekenaar, maakte meer dan 340 illustraties die het determineren zullen vereenvoudigen en meer zekerheid zullen geven over de juistheid van de determinaties. Als laatste grote klus worden nu de bestaande collecties gedigitaliseerd, zodat eenvoudig verspreidingskaartjes en vliegtijddiagrammen kunnen worden vervaardigd. Pjotr Oosterbroek nam hiervoor de collecties van de Wageningen Universiteit en van het Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum / Naturalis te Leiden voor zijn rekening. De grote collectie van het Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam werd al deels door hem bewerkt, maar de grote bulk van die collectie moet nog gedigitaliseerd worden. Samen met het in de loop van de jaren gedetermineerde malaiseval-materiaal bevat de database op dit ogenblik een kleine records, met daarin zo n exemplaren. DenieuweWMzaltabellentotopdesoortbevatten, waarbij alle nu uit Nederland bekende soorten worden behandeld. Daarnaast wordt nog een twintigtal in de omgeving van Nederland voorkomende Tipulidae opgenomen en enkele grotere Limoniidae. Deze laatste omdat ze gemakkelijk voor Tipulidae kunnen worden aangezien. Van alle uit Nederland bekende soorten zullen verspreidingskaartjes worden gegeven en per soort zal, voor zover beschikbaar, informatie over de biologie worden verstrekt. In het algemene inleidende deel van de WM zullen practische wenken voor het doen van waarnemingen en het vangen, prepareren, etiketteren en conserveren van materiaal worden behandeld. Een bespreking van de bouw van volwassen Tipulidae, voor zover dat nodig is om de tabellen goed te begrijpen, staat eveneens op het programma. Het ligt in de bedoeling het manuscript van de WM dit jaar af te ronden, waarna de KNNV tot uitgave kan overgaan. Afwezig met kennisgeving: Paul Beuk, Willem Hurkmans, Henk Meuffels, Willem Renema. Opening Even na uur opent de voorzitter de vergadering enstaathijmeteenkorteterugblikstilbij10jaar Sectie Diptera. Samengevat is zijn conclusie dat de huidige florerende toestand van de Sectie eigenlijk in alles de wensen van 10 jaar geleden in vervulling hebben doen gaan, inclusief de vrees dat de muggen minder aandacht zouden krijgen. Tevens staat de voorzitter kort stil bij het overlijden van Volkert. Vliegenmepper De voorzitter roept alle leden op kopij te blijven maken voor de Vliegenmepper. Paul Beuk, die jarenlang de rubriek Nieuwe literatuur trouw verzorgde, is niet meerinstaatdatindetoekomsttedoen.derubriek dreigt daardoor te verdwijnen. Pjotr Oosterbroek en Ben Brugge stellen zich beschikbaar om de rubriek over te nemen. De nieuwe redactie is voornemens oude jaargangen van de Vliegenmepper te archiveren op CDrom. Er wordt nog nagedacht over een digitale verspreiding (alleen voor belangstellenden: anderen blijven een papieren versie ontvangen). Vanuit de vergadering wordt gesuggereerd de Vliegenmepper niet te en maar via een website openbaar te maken. Het is goed mogelijk dat de NEV dit zou kunnen hosten. Herkiezing bestuur Het bestuur van de sectie(voorzitter: Aat Barendregt, secretaris: Theo Zeegers, ping: Paul Beuk) stelt zich herkiesbaar en wordt bij acclamatie herkozen. Van minstenszogrootbelangistevermeldendatookde redactie en de kampcommissie in de bestaande bezettingen hun werkzaamheden voortzetten(redactie: LaurensvanderLeij,AndrévanEck,Jaapvander Linden; Kampcommissie: Laurens van der Leij, André vaneck). Contributie voor 2002 Dekontributieisal10jaarfl10,--.Voorheteerstis volgens het bestuur een lichte contributieverhoging noodzakelijk in verband met inflatie en de hogere kosten voor de Vliegenmepper. De omschakeling naar de euro lijkt een goed moment om een contributieverhoging voor de komende jaren door te voeren. De vergadering is hiervan wel overtuigd, maar is niet overtuigd van de noodzaak tot draconische verhogingen. Bovendien is zij vooralsnog niet van mening dat verliezen bij kampen uit de centrale kas gecompenseerd moeten worden. Daarom wordt besloten: * De contributie voor het jaar 2002 vast te stellen op 7,50 euro. * Aan de hand van de feitelijke afrekening over 2002 pas een beslissing te nemen over de contributie voor de jaren 2003 en verder. Veldweekend 2002 Al eerder werd besloten dat het veldweekend in 2002 zou plaatsvinden van mei en dat er naar gestreefdzouwordenomdezetehoudenindewieden / Weerribben. Het vinden van een betaalbare boerderij stuit op grote moeilijkheden. De kampcommissie krijgt het fiat om een onderkomen te zoeken tot een maximumbedrag van fl 800,--. Pjotr stelt voor op de middag van de wintervergadering een introductiecursus voor een onbekende familie te organiseren. Hij neemt op zich dit voor 2003 te organiseren. De suggestie wordt gedaan in de voorafgaande Vliegenmepper dan een introductie op die familie te geven, zoals onlangs met de Dolichopodidae gebeurd is. Aartsen Een klein jaar geleden is er een werkgroep boorvliegen (Tephritidae) bij EIS-NL in het leven geroepen. Het coördinatorschap is in handen van beide ondergetekenden. Deze werkgroep is in het leven geroepen ten eerste omdat de eerste auteur van deze mededeling, in samenwerking met de tweede auteur, een tabel voor de Nederlandse boorvliegen aan het voorbereidenisententweedeomdathettijdwordtdat de spaarzame gegevens van de Nederlandse boorvliegen centraal verzameld worden. Natuurlijk is hetzodataandehandvan decollectievanbobvan Aartsen een redelijk beeld verkregen kan worden van de verspreiding van de Nederlandse soorten. Echter om een vollediger beeld te krijgen willen we iedereen oproepen om zijn of haar gegevens van boorvliegen door te geven. Dit moet dus aanzienlijk uitgebreid worden. Binnen afzienbare tijd zal de collectie van Bob van Aartsen hieraan toegevoegd worden. Maar alle waarnemingen zijnmeerdanwelkom,ookalzijnhetermaarenkele. Hetisdebedoelingdatervandemeestesoorteneen verspreidingskaart in de tabel wordt opgenomen. De gegevens kunnen op verschillende manieren aangeleverd worden. De mensen zonder computer of databestand kunnen gebruik maken van de standaard waarnemingsformulieren van EIS. De mensen met computerdanweleendatabestandwilikvragenomde gegevens digitaal aan te leveren. Hiervoor maakt het niet uit in welk database programma de gegevens zijn opgeslagen(orde, Faunist, Access, Dbase of eventueel Excell).Demensendiegraageenopzetvooreendatabase willen hebben kunnen deze bij de eerste auteur aanvragen. Tevens kan er een soortenlijst opgevraagd worden met de bijbehorende naamcodes. Ook kunnen beesten ter controle voorgelegd worden aan de eerste auteur. De gegevens kunnen doorgegeven worden aan EIS of Postbus 9517, 2300 RA in Leiden) of direct aan de eerste auteur of Opditmomentisereendatabestandmetdegegevens van de eerste auteur en die van Frans Raemakers, evenals enkele losse waarnemingen van verschillende waarnemers die ter controle aan de eerste auteur zijn voorgelegd. 10 RECENSIE Liane Lankreijer Stikke trui, verslag van 9 jaar inventariseren; Insecten, herpetofauna, flora Insectenwerkgroep KNNV- Afdeling Arnhem 184 p., met 16 kleurenfoto s Afdeling Arnhem van de Insectenwerkgroep KNNV heeft 9 jaar lang de voormalige(1982) zandgroeve de Stikke Trui geinventariseerd op een groot aantal insectengroepen: (dag)vlinders, aculeaten, haantjes, snuitkevers, wantsen, libellen, waaiervleugeligen en loopkevers en wat de diptera betreft op roofvliegen (Asilidae), wolzwevers (Bombyliidae), geurvlieg! (Coenomyidae), blaaskopvliegen (Conopidae), luisvliegen (Hippoboscidae), spillebeenvliegen (Micropezidae, Tanypezidae), Platystomatidae, snavelvliegen (Rhagionidae), pissebedvliegen (Rhinophoridae), slakkendoders (Sciomyzidae), wapenvliegen(stratiomyidae), zweefvliegen(syrphidae), dazen (Tabanidae), sluipvliegen (Tachinidae), boorvliegen(tephritidae) en viltvliegen(therevidae). Bij een inventarisatieverslag denk je al gauw aan lange soortenlijsten, maar de auteurs hebben van dit boekje een heel prettig leesbaar geheel gemaakt en voorzien van enkele fraaie foto s van de onderzochte groepen en het gebied. Per familie wordt een introductie op de levenswijze gegeven en wordt een relatie gelegd met de levenswijze van de groep in relatie tot het gebied (voortplantings- en ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden, voedselbronnen). Steeds worden enkele bijzondere soorten eruit gelicht vanwege hun zeldzaamheid of vanwege hun zeggingskracht voor dit gebied. De soortenlijsten zijn wijselijk achterin opgenomen. Zoweldeleekalsdekennerkanmetditwerkjeuitde voeten. Het geeft beleidsmakers en beheerders van gebieden die wat minder van insecten weten misschien een kijkje in de keuken van wat het begrip biodiversiteit nou eigenlijk inhoudt. Met name de beschrijving van de biologie van de in Stikke Trui voorkomende waaiervleugeligen (orde Strepsiptera) vond ik zeer fascinerend!voor de kenners is het natuurlijkaltijdleukomtezienwelkesoortenindit specifieke gebied voor komen. microklimaat. Ook de aangelegde poelen zijn in de droge Veluwe een welkome afwisseling. Dit weerspiegelt zich in de diptera die in het gebied gevangenzijn(alvraagikmeafwaardiespheginaelegans vandaan kwam gevlogen). Het leuke is dat hier is gekozen voor een insteek op de fourageermogelijkheden(bloembezoek, predatoren, parasieten) en de voortplantingsmogelijkheden in het gebied (eiafzet, ontwikkeling van de larven: fytofaag/zoöfaag, parasitair). Ook spreken de soorten tot de verbeelding: Ectophasia crassipennis, Eriozona syrphoides, Mallota cimbiciformis, Xantogramma citrofasciatum Tochbleefiknalezingvanditboekjemeteenvraag zitten, want het blijft toch wat vreemd om zo n artefact (een commerciele zandgroeve) opeens tot natuurgebiedtebestempelenenhetbeheervanditgebieddan ook nog te richten op het voorkomen van successie, om dichtgroeien met berken te voorkomen. Dit raakt echter een bredere discussie over de vraag wat je natuur noemt. Ik kan me echter goed voorstellen dat de Insectenwerkgroep Natuurmonumenten adviseert om de grote variatie van microbiotopen in dit gebied te behouden en het hiervoor benodigde beheer uit te voeren. Vanwege de brede insteek op ecologische relaties is dit boek een welkome afwisseling tussen de soortgerichte literatuur die de dipterologen-boekenkasten domineert. Kortom, een aanrader! The fly community is primarily affected by soil humidity and the amount of organic matter while the vegetation structure and species composition only indirectly influence the fly communities. There was no correlation between plant species richness and the fly diversity indices. Based on our results and literature data, we hypothesise that the direct effects of the vegetation is more evident for herbivorous insects than for species that do not feed on plants. The investigated families show a clear response to microhabitat differences in the soil factors, which makes them promising indicators for soil health and as tool for monitoring environmental changes. Disney, R.H.L The preservation of small Diptera. - Entomologist's Monthly Magazine 137 ( ): Drake M The importance of temporary waters for Diptera (True-flies). - Freshwater Forum 17: Frouz, J. & Makarova, O.L Succession of communities of Diptera larvae in decaying fungi. - Biologia Bratislava 56: The effect of season on a community of dipteran larvae decomposing decaying fungi was studied. Dried and rewetted mushrooms were placed in litter-bags and exposed to the floor of a mixed forest near Moscow in four different seasonal aspects: spring, early and late summer and autumn. In total 25 morphospecies of dipteran larvae were found. No exclusive fungivorous species were revealed among the dominants, while saprophagous species with some affinity to decaying fungi prevailed. In all cases a higher larval abundance was found soon after the start of exposure and decreased later. The season of exposure affects larval the community in two different ways: due to temporal coincidence with the colonizers' occurrence and due to food quality. The food quality of autumnal treatment differs substantially from the others. Overwintering of fungi under snow, results in leaching of some nutrients, a slower rate of decomposition and lower abundance of dipteran larvae. The occurrence of the most numerous species (Trichocera sp., Psychoda spp.) was highly seasonal with the exception of Metriocnemus atratulus. Hence the time of exposure and stage of decay are considered as the main factors affecting the species composition of the dipteran community. Haslett, J.R Biodiversity and conservation of Diptera in heterogeneous land mosaics: A fly's eye view. - Journal of Insect Conservation 5: Classical landscape ecology views spatial heterogeneity of habitats at relatively large 'human scales', and it is at such scales that most decisions of land management and nature conservation are made. The present paper makes use of a wider range of spatial scales to examine land mosaics from the 'fly point of view'. Taking examples from the Diptera faunas of mountainous land mosaics, it is demonstrated that: (i) large scale, 'patch content' landscape management has a direct bearing on Diptera community structure, (ii) borders between large scale patches are not necessarily perceived by flies (or other insects) in the same way as we perceived them, (iii) border complexity between patches at any scale may be as important as patch content as an axis of habitat definition. In this sense, 'border' is not to be confused with 'edge effects'. It is concluded that attention to both patch content and patch border complexity of land mosaics, viewed at the relevant spatial scales, is necessary for future successful conservation of Diptera biodiversity and for the efficient use of these insects in environmental assessment studies. In contrast, most saproxylic Diptera were specific to microhabitat or breeding site. The most important microhabitats were decaying sap under bark and decaying sapwood. Most red-listed species are restricted to Strathspey and north-east Scotland where relatively large stands of native boreal trees exist. The sequence of postmortem changes in soft tissues usually gives an idea of how long an individual has been dead. However, modification of the decomposition process can considerably alter the estimate of the time of death. A body after death is sometimes subject to depredation by various types of animals among which insects can have a predominant role in the breakdown of the corpse thus, accelerating the decomposition rate. 13 ATHERICIDAE Gerke, N. & Boettger, K The life cycle of Atrichops crassipes Meigen, 1820 (Diptera: Athericidae) at the Lower Schierenseebrook, a lake outflow in the North German Lowland. - Aquatic Insects 23: The merolimnic fly Atrichops crassipes (Diptera: Athericidae) has a biennial life cycle in Lower Schierenseebrook, a lake outflow in the North German Lowland. Instar analysis based on larval head capsule length and width reveals five instars. The growth rate of successive larval instars remains nearly constant around 1.4, thus following Brooks' rule. Larvae hatch in July and August; the first hibernation occurs mainly during the third instar. Larvae develop to the fourth instar by the next summer and hibernate a second time as fifth instars. The last larval instar leaves the water at the end of May and pupates in the soil. The approximately two-months flight period of the imagines begins around the middle of June. Females lay their eggs on the undersides of leaves of littoral trees, from which the hatching larvae fall into the water. Notes Faunistiques de Gembloux 44: BOMBYLIIDAE Kastinger, C. & Weber, A Bee-flies (Bombylius spp., Bombyliidae, Diptera) and the pollination of flowers. - Flora Jena 196: The paper reviews briefly the presently available information on beeflies (Bombylius, Bombyliidae, Diptera) and their role in the pollination of flowers. It combines literature data and the results of field studies carried out over three consecutive flowering seasons in the surroundings of Vienna (Lower Austria). Field work concentrated on factors affecting flower visit frequencies of bee-flies to evaluate their role as potential pollinators. The results indicate that the significance of bee-flies in pollination is commonly undervalued. Though there are no plants that are exclusively pollinated by bee-flies and though a clearly defined type of "bee-fly flower" does not exist, significant relations between bee-flies and flower size, shape and coloration can be recognized. Bee-flies visit numerous taxa of different families, but prefer groups with hypocrateriform, tubular, disk and lip flowers, while other floral types, such as keel and funnel flowers, receive less attention. The preferred colours of the flowers visited are purple, violet, blue and white. Yellow flowers, and still more reddish or pink flowers are much less attractive. The hitherto existing records on plants visited by bee-flies in Europe are summarized (Tab. 7). The activity of the bee-flies depends strongly on weather conditions; a significant correlation was found between visit frequency and solar irradiation. Low flight activity in shade and shade-avoidance explains why plants pollinated predominantly by bee-flies (e.g., Pulmonaria officinalis) show a markedly different seed set in forest and in open habitats. Pan- Pacific Entomologist 77: The first occurrence of Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) in continental Europe is reported here, This species was caught in a locality of southeastern Spain, using wind-oriented traps baited with lk,er and fish. The implications of this new distribution are discussed. CERATOPOGONIDAE Borkent, A Leptoconops (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), the earliest extant lineage of biting midge, discovered in million-year-old Lebanese amber. - American Museum Novitates 3328: As predicted by phylogenetic patterns, the genus Leptoconops Skuse is recorded for the first time from Lower Cretaceous Lebanese amber, dated at million years. Two species are described as new: L. amplicatus, known from 1 male and 11 females, and L. antiquus, known from 2 females. These likely represent the earliest lineage(s) within the genus and are placed in a new subgenus, Palaeoconops. Previous analysis of Lebanese amber Ceratopogonidae (22 species, 126 specimens) indicated that these specimens represent a past community with high species diversity but with a low abundance of individual species. Leptoconops amplificatus is the first of 24 species of Ceratopogonidae known from this deposit to have intraspecific associations in a single piece of amber, likely reflecting their restriction to ancient beach habitats. CHIRONOMIDAE Delettre, Y.R An annotated checklist of Chironomidae (Diptera) trapped in Brittany (France) since International Journal of Limnology 37: The chironomid fauna ot the Western part of France has been notably understudied; few data are available on species distribution for the region. This paper provides some information obtained from several studies conducted in the eastern part of Brittany. Although a small part of this region is considered, the checklist comprises 94 species, four of which are recorded for the first time in France. Saether, O.A. & Kyerematen, R.A.K Towards phylogeny and zoogeography of the genus Rheotanytarsus Thienemann et Bause, 1913 (Diptera: Chironomidae). - Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 144: Additions and corrections to the generic diagnosis of the genus Rheotanytarsus Thienemann et Bause is given. A list of all described species is given. Tanytarsus apenninicus Rossaro (1993: 233) is a junior synonym of Rheotanytarsus nigricauda Fittkau (1960: 397). R. kwangungensis Ree (1989: 211) probably is a junior synonym of Tanytarsus thermae Tokunaga (1940: 304), but not formally synonymized. The genus can be divided into four groups based on pupa alone, the 'ceratophylli', 'pellucidus', 'nigricauda', and 'curtistylus' groups. The first three appear to be clearly monophyletic, while the 'curtistylus' group is not. In order to determine the phylogeny of the genus all previously described species were re-examined from specimens available or from the literature. Different parsimony analyses were performed. The preferred tree using constraints based on the pupal types and species pairs repeatedly found in parsimony analyses yielded 15 groups: the aestuarius group consisting of 2 species only, the acerbus group with 6 species, the muscicola group with 13 species, the monotypic pentapoda group, the pellucidus group with 9 species, the sessilipersonatus group with 3 species, the globosus group with 5 species, the ororus group with 7 species, the aquilus group with 6 species, the thermae group with 5 species, the trivittatus group with 7 species, the curtistylus group with 3 species, the exiguus group with 6 species, the orientalis group with 4 species, and the guineensis group with 17 species. The preferred tree has the aestuarius group as the sister group of the remaining species with the De Vliegenmepper (2002, nummer 1) 13

14 following sequence (aestuarius gr. ((acerbus gr., muscicola gr.) (pentapoda gr. ((pellucidus gr. (sessilipersonatus gr. ((globosus gr., ororus gr.) (aquilus gr. (thermae gr., trivittatus gr.))))) (curtistylus gr. ((exiguus gr., orientalis gr.) guineensis gr.)))))). Geographic coevolutionary analyses were performed using Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA). Based on the area cladogram ancestral area analyses using the methods of Bremer (1992) and a modification of Ronquist (1994) and Michelsen (1994) counting terminal shifts only were also done. The genus Rheotanytarsus likely originated in Pangea prior to the final split between Africa and South America, but much later than the first break-up of the continents in the south. The ancestral area probably included Northeast Africa and South Asia. The genus shows a warm/eurythermic vicariant Gondwanan pattern with multiple sister group relationships between the South Asia subregion and the Afrotropical regions. The East Asia - North America linkage is likely of post-miocene origin. African - West Palaearctic and South Asian - West Palaearctic vicariance are found in several groups. The evidence for West African - Brazilian vicariance is present, but very limited. Notes Faunistiques de Gembloux 44: CULICOMORPHA Saether, O.A Phylogeny of Culicomorpha (Diptera). - Systematic Entomology 25(2): The phylogeny of the families of Culicomorpha and their closest relatives are cladistically reinvestigated adding published information from several sources. A revised data matrix is presented and some characters are discussed. Different outgroups and options used, characters unordered or ordered, the results reweighted or not and the results discussed. Nymphomyiidae in all cladograms, alone or together with Thaumaleidae, forms the sister group of the traditional Culicomorpha and should be included in this infraorder as suggested by others. Superfamily Chironomoidea is not monophyletic as Thaumaleidae or Nymphomyiidae + Thaumaleidae form the sister group to the remaining traditional Culicomorpha. The mutual relationships of Chironomidae, Simuliidae and Ceratopogonidae are variable between cladograms. They form a monophyletic group with Chironomidae and Simuliidae as sister groups when characters are unordered and reweighted or when some characters are ordered, others unordered and the result reweighted. When the characters are ordered, or when a combination of ordered and unordered are used they form a Hennigian comb with the phyletic sequence Chironomidae/Ceratopogonidae/Simuliidae. When characters are ordered and reweighted the phyletic sequence is Chironomidae/Simuliidae/Ceratopogonidae. Culicoidea is monophyletic in all cladograms, but the division into superfamilies is not warranted. Four grassland and one reed marsh sites within the 'Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen' Nature Reserve (B.O.) (Ghent) were sampled with white water traps from March 1993 until March Subsequently, these soil faunas were compared with those of reed marsh habitats in 'Het Meetjeslandse Krekengebied' (M.K.) sampled in Comparisons of species communities were carried out by means of multivariate analysis techniques. The DCA and CCA on the B.O. sites produced a clear separation between the grassland and the reed marsh communities. Light intensity and soil humidity were among the most important factors determining species distributions. The comparison between the B.O. and M.K. communities revealed that sampling sites were clustered according to their geographical location rather than to habitat type. Overall species richness and diversity was not significantly different between grasslands and reed marshes. However, conservation quality estimates of the sites using the Site Conservation Quality Index (SCQI) indicated that reed marshes comprise a considerably larger number of rare and Red Data Book species. Moreover, besides typical reed marsh-inhabiting species, reed marshes also house species with other ecological affinities sometimes in rather high abundance. As a result, reed marshes are considered highly valuable for the survival of several wetland dolichopodid species. (Diptera) as a tool in nature conservation, a Red Data Book of this taxonomical group was generated for Flanders, Belgium. All distribution data on species in Belgium between 1887 and 1999 were gathered from collections as well as personal sampling efforts by the first two authors. This resulted in about 21,000 records of Empididae, Hybotidae, Microphoridae and Atelestidae with 16,119 records for Flanders (northern Belgium) and 4776 for Wallony (southern Belgium). All species were assigned to Red Data Book categories which are based on a combination of a rarity and a trend criterion. Rarity is expressed as the proportion of the total number of UTM 5 km squares sampled in which the species have been found since The trend criterion is interpreted as the change of the species rarity between and A comparable number of UTM 5 km squares was investigated during the two time periods. A total of 259 species were recorded in Flanders. Twenty-seven or 10% of them are considered as 'extinct in Flanders', 10 (4%) as 'critically endangered', 12 (5%) as 'endangered', 11 (4%) as 'vulnerable', 99 species (38%) as 'susceptible' or 'rare', 65 species (25%) as 'safe' or 'at low risk' and 34 species (13%) are assigned to the category 'data deficient' due to taxonomic problems or a lack of ecological data. Only one of the common species shows a recent decrease of more than 50% and is classified as 'nearly threatened'. Current threats in most species are related to the alteration or destruction of their favoured habitats. The species can be arranged according to the colour of the swollen segment of palpus, the number of flagellar segments and the structure of male genitalia. On the basis of the colour of the swollen segment of palpi the species can be divided into two groups, the number of flagellar segments into four groups, and the structure of the genitalia into three groups. Morphological differences between the groups are discussed with an emphasise on genital differences. NANNODASTIIDAE Papp, L. & Mathis, W.N A review of the family Nannodastiidae (Diptera). - Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington 103: The two genera and five species currently assigned to the family Nannodastiidae are reviewed. The genera, Azorastia Frey and Nannodastia Hendel, are very similar and closely related, although each was originally described in a different family, Asteiidae and Ephydridae respectively. Adults of both genera are very small, lengths often less than 1 mm, and exhibit many highly derived, often reduced, structures, making their phylogenetic placement enigmatic. Thus, we remain unsure of the family's phylogenetic relationships and placement in acalyptrate classification or even of the group's status as a family. Nannodastia atlantica is newly described (type locality: Belize. Stann Creek District: Glover's Reef (Long Cay)) and is the first record of this genus in the New World. OESTRIDAE Pape, T Phylogeny of Oestridae (Insecta: Diptera). - Systematic Entomology 26: The phylogeny of Oestridae was analysed at the generic level using 118 characters from all developmental stages and including morphology, ontogeny, physiology and behaviour. Four major clades were given subfamilial rank with the phylogenetic relationship (Cuterebrinae (Gasterophilinae (Hypodermatinae + Oestrinae))). The subdermal parasites of the African elephant, Neocuterebra squamosa Grunberg and Ruttenia loxodontis Rodhain, had their most probable affiliation subordinate to the clade of stomach parasites, although their exact position needs further investigation. Genus Ochotonia Grunin, which is known from a single third-instar larva only, was the probable sister group of all other Hypodermatinae. Twenty-five oestrid genera were recognised as valid and those containing more than one species were defined through lists of autapomorphies. Cuterebra Clark was proposed as a senior synonym of Alouattamyia Townsend, Andinocuterebra Guimaraes, Pseudogametes Bischof and Rogenhofera Brauer. The clade of hypodermatine ungulate parasites (Hypoderma Latreille + Pallasiomyia Rubtzov + Pavlovskiata Grunin + Przhevalskiana Grunin + Strobiloestrus Brauer) remained largely unresolved, and genus Przhevalskiana emerged without defining characters. PHORIDAE Buck, M Identification of females of European Conicera Meigen, with a discussion of certain features of the reproductive anatomy of female Phoridae (Diptera). Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift 48: The presence of a sclerotized ring at the base of the common spermiduct is reported for the first time in females of the phorid genus Conicera Meigen. This character is species- specific and proves to be the only reliable one in distinguishing females of certain closely related species of Conicera. Using other newly discovered genitalic and non- genitalic characters the first key to European Conicera females is presented. On a broader perspective the occurrence of vaginal sclerites is investigated in twenty other phorid genera using light microscopy. Results from this and previous studies indicate that internal sclerites are widely distributed throughout the family but often are not homologous. Furthermore, the internal genitalia of Conicera tibialis are studied by dissection, uncovering the unusual morphology of its spermathecae. The findings are compared to the very scarce previously published data on spermathecae in the family. According to this the number and morphology of phorid sper- De Vliegenmepper (2002, nummer 1) 16

17 mathecae appears to be variable between and even within genera. However, the sperm-storing organs in some derived genera are probably not homologous to true spermathecae. Two new genera are described, Clistoabdominalis and Dasydorylas. The identity of Eudorylas Aczel, the type genus for Eudorylini, has been obscure since its inception. The genus is re-diagnosed and a proposal to stabilize the genus and tribal names is discussed. An illustrated key to the genera of Pipunculidae is presented and all Eudorylini genera are diagnosed. Numerous new generic synonyms are proposed. SARCOPHAGIDAE Alcock, J The natural history of a miltogrammine fly, Miltogramma rectangularis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society 73: The miltogrammine fly, Miltogramma rectangularis. is a common and widespread brood parasite of the large Australian native bee, Amegilla dawsoni. Recently eclosed flies emerged from the underground brood cells of the bee and walked rapidly across bare ground to reach cover in the vegetated fringe of the nesting area. While walking, the flightless flies were vulnerable to bird and ant predators. but they may have minimized their exposure by maintaining a constant compass orientation until a perch was found. Once perched inconspicuously, the dies spent about an hour inflating and hardening their wings before they were able to Ay. At some sites, males located, courted, and mated teneral females in a scramble competition mating system. Although hundreds of flies emerged from parts of some nesting areas over several weeks, adult females seeking to larviposit on passing bees were generally scarce. The proportion of brood cells lost to the parasite was low (under 5%). As a result, it seems unlikely that parasite pressure by the fly contributes greatly to the male size dimorphism that characterizes A. dawsoni, because even if brood provisions intended for large sons were at greater risk of exploitation by the parasite, the percentage lost would still be too small to outweigh the great mating advantage experienced by the larger males. Kohler, U. & Lakes-Harlan, R Auditory behaviour of a parasitoid fly (Emblemasoma auditrix, Sarcophagidae, Diptera). Journal of Comparitive Physiology (A) 187: Females of the parasitoid fly Emblemasoma auditrix find their host cicada (Okanagana rimosa) by its acoustic signals. In laboratory experiments, fly phonotaxis had a mean threshold of about 66 db SPL when tested with the cicada calling song. Flies exhibited a frequency dependent phonotaxis when testing to song models with different carrier frequencies (pulses of 6 ms duration and a repetition rate of 80 pulses s(-1)) However, the phonotactic threshold was rather broadly tuned in the range from 5 khz to 11 khz. Phonotaxis was also dependent on the temporal parameters of the song models: repetition rates of 60 pulses s(-1) and 80 pulses s(-1) and pulse durations of 5-7 ins resulted in the highest percentages of phonotaxis performing animals coupled with the lowest threshold values. Thus, parasitoid phonotaxis is adapted especially to the temporal parameters of the calling song of the host. Choice experiments revealed a preference of a song model with 9 khz carrier frequency (peak energy of the host song) compared with 5 khz carrier frequency (electrophysiologically determined best hearing frequency). However. this preference changed with the relative sound pressure level of both signals. When presented simultaneously, E. auditrix preferred 5- khz signals, if they were 5 db SPL louder than the 9-kHz signal. SCATHOPHAGIDAE Bernasconi, M.V.; Pawlowski, J.; Valsangiacomo, C; Piffaretti, J.C. & Ward, P.I Phylogeny of the genus Scathophaga (Diptera: Scathophagidae) inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences. - Canadian Journal of Zoology 79: Scathophaga stercoraria has been used for a large number of studies in animal ecology and evolution. Morphological phylogenetic work on the relationships among flies of the family Scathophagidae in general, and the genus Scathophaga in particular, has led to limited or incomplete conclusions. We addressed these relationships by sequencing 810 base pairs (bp) from the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and 738 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cyt b) gene in 16 species of Scathophagidae. Phylogenetic analysis of these two protein-coding genes allows us to resolve relatively well the relationships within the genus Scathophaga, using both separate and combined (COI + Cyt b) data. Most of the phylogenetic trees generated by our data support the following relationships: (((S. analis + S. inquinata) + S. lutaria) + S. cineraria + (S. taeniopa + S. suilla + S. incola) + S. furcata + S. tropicalis). The most noteworthy findings are that (i) S. obscura and S. tinctinervis, which were formerly placed in the genus Coniosternum, form a sibling species cluster; (ii) S. taeniopa and S. suilla, which are morphologically very similar species, are clearly distinct taxa; (iii) S. analis, considered a doubtful species in the Catalogue of Palearctic Diptera, could be a synonym of S. inquinata; and (iv) the South American S. tropicalis and the Old World S. stercoraria are not sister-species. Entomological Science 4: SEPSIDAE Eberhard, W.G The functional morphology of species-specific clasping structures on the front legs of male Archisepsis and Palaeosepsis flies (Diptera, Sepsidae). - Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 133: Several possible explanations for the elaborate species- specific morphology of male front leg clasping organs were tested by comparing six species of Archisepsis, Palaeosepsis and Microsepsis flies. The only previously published hypothesis regarding these clasping organs was refuted by the finding that species-specific portions of the male femur and tibia consistently meshed tightly with prominent veins and folds in the female's wing, rather than meshing with each other. Female wing morphology in the region grasped by the male was relatively uniform and in general did not vary in ways that would prevent non-conspecific males from grasping them, arguing in all but one species against both simple lock-and-key and male-female conflict of interests hypotheses based on morphology. Interspecific differences in male front leg morphology generally represent alternative ways to accomplish the same basic mechanical function of holding tightly onto the relatively invariant female. Despite the fact that female resistance behaviour indicates that male-female conflict over male mounting is common, only one female wing structure in one species resembled an anti-clasper device, giving a second reason to doubt the morphological male-female conflict of interest hypothesis, at least for five of the six species. The positions of probable sensory structures on the wings of females were relatively similar in different species and did not correspond in any obvious way to species-specific features of male clasping structures. This, plus the intraspecific variation in both the positions of these sensilla and the exact site where the male grasped the female's wing, argued against simple 'sensory lockand-key' ideas about male front leg function. By a process of elimination, it appears that generalized female receptors are able to sense species-specific differences in male front legs. This idea was supported by increased female rejection behaviour in cross-specific pairs. Eberhard, W.G Species-specific genitalic copulatory courtship in sepsid flies (Diptera, Sepsidae, Microsepsis) and theories of genitalic evolution. - Evolution 55: Males of Microsepsis eberhardi and M. armillata use their genitalic surstyli to rhythmically squeeze the female's abdomen with stereotyped movements during copulation. Squeezing movements did not begin until intromission had occurred and, contrary to predictions of the conflict-of-interest hypothesis for genitalic evolution, did not overcome morphological or behavioral female resistance. Contrary to predictions of the lock-and-key hypothesis, female morphology was uniform in the two species and could not mechanically exclude the genitalia of either species of male. The complex pattern of squeezing movements differed between the two species as predicted by the sexual selection hypothesis for genitalic evolution. Also, evolutionarily derived muscles and pseudoarticulations in the male's genitalic surstyli facilitated one type of movement, whose patterns were especially distinct. We tested whether and how fast the flies, when placed on the edge of a circular dummy flower, found a small central yellow spot and touched it with the proboscis extended. The flies found the central yellow spot more often and faster if guide lines from the margin to the yellow spot were present. Episyrphus balteatus failed to exhibit enhanced behavioural responses, in terms of approaches and landings, to artificial leaves with the highest numbers of aphids, suggesting that females are merely responding to the colour of the artificial leaves. A density-dependent oviposition response was reported in a second bioassay using whole bean plants, although there was an asymptotic relationship. Syrphid responses, which were measured by oviposition over a five-day period, were greatest towards those plants with the highest number of aphids. In a final series of trials, gravid female E. balteatus showed a behavioural preference for filter papers treated with the greatest honeydew concentrations (0.26 mg mul-1 honeydew). More time was spent in the treated areas and syrphids demonstrated more proboscis and ovipositor extensions in these treatments. These bioassays provided an opportunity to isolate some of the individual components of decision-making by female E. balteatus during egg-laying behaviour. A greater understanding of natural enemy behaviour is essential before enhanced control of pest populations in the field can be established. Observations of the larvae of Brachyopa panzeri Goffe, 1945, Mallota cimbiciformis (Fallen, 1817) and Xylota xanthocnema Collin, 1939 are presented. Those 20 hoverflies that were last recorded between 1970 and 1989 in the aerea are listed. Vujic, A The tribe Chrysogasterini (Diptera: Syrphidae) in the Balkan Peninsula, with the description of three new cryptic species. - Studia Dipterologica 6: This paper reviews the species of the tribe Chrysogasterini based on material collected in the Balkan Peninsula. Fifteen species in five genera are recorded, and a review of their distribution is given. Three new cryptic species are recognized and described. Two of them, Chrysogaster mediterraneus spec. nov. and Riponnensia morini spec. nov., were collected in the Mediterranean and Submediterranean areas. The first is related to the west Palaearctic species C. solstitialis (Fallén, 1817) and the second one to R. daccordii (Claussen, 1991), an endemic of Corsica. The third species, Orthonevra montana spec. nov., is found on several Balkan mountains, ranging from Bosnia- Herzegovina and Serbia to Greece. The species is similar to O. tristis (Loew, 1871), characteristic of the Alps and Pyrenees. The existing published keys are modified to incorporate the new species. TABANIDAE Ganeva, D Seasonal activity of Tabanus bromius L., Tabanus tergestinus Egg. and Haematopota pluvialis L. (Tabanidae, Diptera) in Stara Zagora district, Bulgaria. - Acta Zoologica Bulgarica 53: The phenology and the seasonal activity of the dominant species Tabanus bromius L., Tabanus tergestinus Egg. and Haematopota pluvialis L. have been studied in three pastures of Stara Zagora district, South Bulgaria. It has been established that the peak of the seasonal activity of T. bromius is during the first half of July in the three studied biotopes. T. tergestinus has a single peak in the pastures of the villages Kanchevo and Trakia and two peaks in the pasture of the village of Oryahovitsa. H. pluvialis has maximum quantity during the first half of July in the pasture of the villages of Kanchevo and Trakia, while in that of the village of Oryahovitsa - at the end of July. It is noted that the antitabanic activities in the studied region have to be carried out from the beginning of June till the end of July. Ossowski, A., & Hunter, F.F Distribution patterns, body size, and sugar-feeding habits of two species of Chrysops (Diptera: Tabanidae). - Canadian Entomologist 132(2): Two deer fly species, Chrysops mitis Osten Sacken and Chrysops excitans Walker, were collected by sweep-netting around human bait on five collection dates in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. Distribution patterns of the two species at two sites (abandoned airfield and Davies bog), in two habitats (open and forest edge), and at two times of day (morning and afternoon) are analysed. Chrysops excitans was more frequently collected than C. mitis. Regardless of site, both species are more common in the morning than the afternoon collections and both are more common in the open than the forest-edge habitats. Chrysops excitans was the larger species (based on wing length measurements) and its size was constant regardless of site, habitat, and time of day. In contrast, afternoon-collected C. mitis were larger than morning-collected flies at the Davies bog site. The crop contents of 241 flies were identified using thin-layer chromatography. Using melezitose and stachyose as honeydew-indicator sugars, the relative importance of homopteran honeydew and floral nectar as carbohydrate sources for these flies was determined. We found no significant differences among species, sites, habitats, or times of day. Overall, 52.8% of C. excitans and 51.1% of C. mitis had recently fed on homopteran-derived honeydew sugars, underscoring the importance of this carbohydrate source for the haematophagous Diptera. Zeeuws Landschap 17(2): Freidberg, A Systematics of Schistopterini (Diptera: Tephritidae: Tephritinae), with descriptions of new genera and species. - Systematic Entomology: 27: The systematics of tribe Schistopterini (Diptera: Tephritidae) is reviewed and discussed, and a key is given to the fourteen current genera, of which four are new. A cladogram of the type species of the genera plus all other species of one of the new genera (Microtreta) is presented, supporting the monophyly of Microtreta. The new genera include Calloptera (type species Rhabdochaeta asteria Hendel), Microtreta (type species Microtreta fini, sp.n.), Melanopterella (type species Rhabdochaeta nigra Bezzi) and Schistotephritis (type species Camaromyia acrophthalma Bezzi). Microtreta is treated comprehensively; its constituents, deemingi, fini, frontale, jeffreyi and longicornis (all new species), are described from East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Host plants, all of genus Vernonia (Asteraceae), are recorded for the four East African species. Characters of immature stages are described for M. longicornis. Eighteen new combinations are made. Key to the Palaearctic species. - Entomologicheskoe Obozrenie 78(2): A lectotype for Euribia longicauda Hendel is designated. Urophora melanocera (Hering) and U. phaeocera (Hering) are shown to be valid species names and resurrected from synonymy. The following synonyms are established: Urophora notata (Belanovskij, 1951), comb.n. = U. solaris Korneyev, 1984, syn.n.; Urophora longicauda (Hendel, 1927) = U. sciadocousiniae Korneyev et White, 1992, syn.n.; U. spatiosa Becker, 1913 = Euribia angustifascia Hering, 1956, syn.n.
