2 Bloed Blood Be kind to me was de zin die Henry Kissinger uitsprak een seconde voordat hij door Richard Avedon gefotografeerd werd. Van origine was Avedon modefotograaf en op het werk dat hij toen maakte was iedereen even jong, mooi en aantrekkelijk. Toen hij zich met het fotograferen van de machtigen der aarde ging bezighouden, bleek niet iedereen zo jong, mooi en aantrekkelijk te zijn. Zijn foto s waren zoals de mensen eruit zagen en dat in zwart wit en pittig afgedrukt, prachtig. Maar Henry was niet zo blij met z n foto. Be kind to me, were the words uttered by Henry Kissinger seconds before he was photographed by Richard Avedon. Originally, Avedon had been a fashion photographer, and his work at that time was intended to make everyone look young, beautiful and attractive. When he turned his talents to photographing the world s most powerful men, it seemed that not everyone was so young, beautiful or attractive. His pictures showed people as they really looked: in black and white and crisply defined, the effect was stunning. But Henry was not too happy with his photo. Dagen hing in rond op een paar afdelingen, witte jas aan en camera in de aanslag, het verhaal van de jager en z n prooi. Ik sloeg toe als ik mooie concentratie zag in gezichten, het licht goed stond, vormen goed uitkwamen, kortom al die dingen die moeten samenvallen om een sterk beeld te schieten en een mooi verhaal te vertellen. My favourite place to work is the street, and in particular the people you find there. Usually, the people I photograph there do not get to see the pictures I take. At Sanquin, things were different. Day after day I spent hanging around various departments, with my white coat and camera at the ready, like a hunter waiting for his prey. I struck when I detected a wave of concentration sweep over people s faces, when the light was right, when shapes stood out in other words, when all the necessary factors were in place to create a good picture and an interesting story. Enthousiast liet ik mijn foto s zien aan enkele mensen die ik gefotografeerd had. Ze waren er niet blij mee, terwijl ik wist dat ze er prachtig opstonden. Na wat navraag werd het duidelijk; ze stonden er niet lachend op, dat was het. Onmiddellijk moest ik denken aan de uitvinding die een Japanse camerafabrikant een jaar geleden geïntroduceerd heeft; je drukt op de knop, de camera stelt automatisch scherp en wacht dan nog even met het maken van de foto, want de software in de camera detecteert de vorm van de mond en pas als de mondhoeken zich omhoog krullen, dan besluit de software van de camera dat de foto gemaakt mag worden, en klik dus. In de serie die ik nu voor Sanquin maak ziet u geen lachende gezichten, maar juist daarom zijn die mensen zo mooi. Kissinger mocht ik ook een keer fotograferen, hij staat nog op mijn website. Tegen mij zei hij: You ll get one minute en na dertig seconden draaide hij zich om en liep zonder iets te zeggen weg. Reinier Gerritsen Suitably buoyed up, I showed my photos to several people I had photographed. They were not pleased, although I knew that they looked fabulous. After talking for a while, it became clear why: they were unsmiling that was the reason. It immediately reminded me of an invention that a Japanese camera manufacturer had introduced a year ago: you press the button; the camera focuses automatically and then waits before actually taking the picture. This is because the software in the camera detects the shape of the mouth and only allows the camera to function to click when the corners of the mouth curl upwards. You won t see any smiling faces in the series I am currently making for Sanquin, but it is precisely this that makes the people so beautiful. I also had one chance to photograph Kissinger; he is still on my website. He said to me, You ll get one minute. Thirty seconds later he turned round and walked away without another word. In 1992 kreeg hij de jaarlijkse Rijksmuseum opdracht, Bedrijfscultuur in Nederland. Bekende projecten van hem zijn Matti, verslag van de nieuwe generatie ROC leerlingen in Amsterdam en The Europeans, een portret van het nieuwe Europa. In 2010 komt zijn nieuwste boek uit: Wall Street Subway, gelijk met de tentoonstelling in het Nederlands Fotomuseum. Zijn werk is aangekocht door bedrijfscollecties en musea. Reinier Gerritsen (1950) started his career by designing an album cover for Jimi Hendrix. He was given the prestigious yearly Rijksmuseum assignment Company culture in the Netherlands in Other well-known projects of his are Matti, a book about the new youth culture in Amsterdam schools, and The Europeans, a portrait of contemporary Europe. His new book Wall Street Subway will be published in the Spring of 2010, simultaneous to an exhibition at the Nederlands Foto Museum. 19 Sanquin Sanquin Sanquin verzorgt op non-profit basis de bloedvoorziening in Nederland en bevordert bloedtransfusiegeneeskunde zodanig dat wordt voldaan aan de hoogste eisen van kwaliteit, veiligheid en doelmatigheid. Zij levert producten en diensten, verricht wetenschappelijk onderzoek en verzorgt onderwijs, opleidingen bij- en nascholing. Sanquin geeft het tijdschrift Bloedbeeld uit, bestemd voor hen die gebruikmaken van haar producten en diensten: medisch specialisten, klinisch chemici, ziekenhuisapothekers, ziekenhuizen en onderzoeksinstellingen in Nederland. Bloedbeeld wordt ook gezonden aan landelijke advies- en beleidsorganen op het gebied van de gezondheidszorg, overheid en media. Het verschijnt vier keer per jaar. Naast artikelen over de ontwikkelingen en activiteiten binnen Sanquin op het gebied van productie, diagnostiek, onderzoek en onderwijs wordt in Bloedbeeld ook een fotografisch beeld van Sanquin gegeven. Jaarlijks wordt hiertoe een opdracht gegeven aan een fotograaf. In 2009 werd de opdracht verstrekt aan Reinier Gerritsen. Deze bundel omvat het resultaat van deze opdracht. Reinier Gerritsen heeft door middel van de fotografie de mensen van Sanquin in beeld gebracht. Hij is begonnen bij het callcenter bij Bloedbank Regio Noordoost, en via de donors kwam hij bij bloedbewerking, onderzoek, productie en uiteindelijk de verzending, kortom de natuurlijke gang door het bedrijf of het proces van a tot z. Sanquin is the national not-for-profit blood supply organization in the Netherlands. It advances blood transfusion medicine in such a way as to comply with the highest demands of quality, safety and efficiency. Sanquin supplies products and services, performs scientific research, and provides education and training. Sanquin publishes the quarterly, Bloedbeeld. It is intended for the clients of Sanquin s products and services: medical specialists, clinical chemists, hospital pharmacists, hospitals and research institutions in the Netherlands. Bloedbeeld is also sent to national advisory bodies and policy makers in health care, the government and the media. Besides articles on the internal developments and activities in the field of production, diagnostics, research and education at Sanquin, Bloedbeeld also shows a photographic impression of Sanquin. Each year Sanquin commissions a photographer to do this, and the 2009 commission was awarded to Reinier Gerritsen. This volume shows the results of his work. Reinier Gerritsen has used photography to portrait the people of Sanquin. He started at the call center at Blood Bank North East Region, and via the blood donors he photographed blood processing, research, production and finally the distribution, to put it briefly the natural course through the company or the process from a to z.
