2 Language B Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) are language acquisition courses for students with some previous experience of learning the language. While studying the language, students also explore the culture(s) connected with it.

3 Positie IB Het International Baccalaureate werd in 1968 in Zwitserland opgericht als non-profit onderwijs-organisatie. Aan de allereerste examens deden zeven, vooral internationale, scholen in zes verschillende landen mee. Inmiddels wordt het diplomaprogramma aangeboden op meer dan 2000 kwaliteitsscholen met ruim kandidaten in zo n 140 landen. De diploma s en certificaten worden wereldwijd door ruim 1800 universiteiten en hogescholen erkend. In Nederland mag het IB-programma alleen worden aangeboden door internationale scholen en door erkende tto-scholen.

6 Interactive oral activity Based on the core: Three classroom activities assessed by the teacher. 10% SL Standard Level External assessment 70% Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes): Receptive skills Text-handling exercises on four written texts, based on the core. 25% Paper 2 (1 hour 30 minutes): Written productive skills One writing exercise of words from a choice of five, based on the options. 25% Written assignment: Receptive and written productive skills Intertextual reading followed by a written exercise of words plus a 100-word rationale, based on the core. 20% Internal assessment 30% Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB. 30% Individual oral (8 10 minutes) Based on the options: 15 minutes preparation time and a 10-minute (maximum) presentation and discussion with the teacher. 20%

7 HL Higher Level External assessment 70% Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes): Receptive skills Text-handling exercises on five written texts, based on the core. 25% Paper 2 (1 hour 30 minutes): Written productive skills Two compulsory writing exercises. Section A: One task of words, based on the options, to be selected from a choice of five. Section B: Response of words to a stimulus text, based on the core. 25% Written assignment: Receptive and written productive skills Creative writing of words plus a 150-word rationale, based on one of the literary texts read. 20% Internal assessment 30% Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB. Individual oral (8 10 minutes) Based on the options: 15 minutes preparation time and a 10-minute (maximum) presentation and discussion with the teacher. 20% Interactive oral activity Based on the core: Three classroom activities assessed by the teacher. 10%

8 Core- subjects There are three topics in the core. Communication and media ( advertising bias in media censorship internet mail press radio and television sensationalism in media telephone.) Global issues ( drugs energy reserves food and water global warming, climate change, natural disasters globalization international economy migration (rural urban, or international) poverty and famine racism, prejudice, discrimination the effect of man on nature the environment and sustainability. Social relationships ( celebrations, social and religious events educational system language and cultural identity, or self-identity linguistic dominance minorities multilingualism nationalism, patriotism, fanaticism relationships (friendship, work, family) social and/or political structures social behaviours and stances taboos versus what is socially acceptable. These three topics are compulsory at SL and HL. Students are required to study at least two aspects from each core topic.

9 Options There are five topics in the options. Cultural diversity ( beliefs, values and norms culinary heritage how culture is learned intercultural assimilation interlinguistic influence language diversity migration population diversity subcultures the concepts of human beauty verbal and non-verbal communication.) Customs and traditions ( celebrations, social and religious events dress codes, uniforms etiquette and protocols fashion food historical events national costumes the arts. Health ( concepts of beauty and health diet and nutrition drug abuse epidemics health services hygiene illnesses, symptoms of good/ill health mental health physical exercise surgery traditional and alternative medicine. ) Leisure ( entertainment exhibitions and shows games hobbies recreation social interaction through leisure sports travelling. ) Science and technology ( entertainment ethics and science ethics and technology impact of information technology on society natural sciences renewable energy scientific research social sciences.) Teachers select two topics. At least two aspects must be studied from each selection.

10 Voor HAVO-4 TTO leerlingen is het vak English B verplicht. Helaas is het rooster- technisch niet mogelijk om de 5 lesuren die voor dit vak staan voor deze leerlingen samen te clusteren. De schoolleiding wil toch TTO-senior-college aanbieden. Daartoe is de volgende oplossing gekozen. In HAVO-4 moeten de TTO-senior-college leerlingen 3 van de 4 reguliere lessen Engels in hun eigen klas volgen, samen met de niet-tto leerlingen. Daarnaast krijgen zij nog 2 lessen English B, die op 7 e uren vallen en die ze wel samen met alle HAVO-4 TTO leerlingen volgen. In HAVO 5 kunnen de 5 lesuren English B wel geclusterd worden en volgen de TTO-senior-college leerlingen geen lessen regulier Engels. De TTO-leerlingen moeten net als de reguliere leerlingen die het vak Engels volgen werken volgens hun PTA. Voor de TTO-leerlingen betekent dit wel dat zij de schrijfvaardigheidstoetsen en idioomtoetsen voor het vak English B maken. Dit geldt ook voor hun mondeling (PTA periode 5). Ook de leesboeken worden behandeld en afgehandeld bij de English B lessen. Daarnaast moeten zij in periode 2 en 3 een leesvaardigheidstoets doen en in periode 4 luistervaardigheid. Dit zijn dezelfde werken die de reguliere HAVO-4 leerlingen ook maken. In de reguliere lessen biedt Of Course grammatica en lees- en luister-vaardigheidsonderdelen. De grammatica onderdelen dienen als ondersteuning voor de schrijfopdrachten van English B. Tijdens de reguliere lessen Engels mogen de leerlingen ook werken aan opdrachten voor English B volgens een studieplanner.
