Monitoring by using (yellow) sticky traps is often used to detect which plagues are present in the crop and in which densities. Different plagues and beneficials can be found on different locations in the crop. This means the height where the sticky trap is suspended determines what you catch. When white fly (both greenhouse and tobacco), Macrolophus pygmaeus and Nesidiocoris tenius are targeted, we advise to hang the sticky traps near the head of the plant. For Macrolophus and Nesidiocoris, this will strongly increase the chance of trapping. It is also the most practical suspension height. In the case where sticky traps are suspended deeper in the crop, the amount of trapped whitefly will increase but less Macrolophus and Nesidiocoris will be found on the plates. Since Macrolophus is in general more difficult to trap than whitefly, we should mainly focus on increasing the chances of catching this insect. The suspension height with the highest amount of Macrolophus trapped is preferred. Nesidiocoris is also found in the head, these insects will also be found on the sticky trap when it is suspended there. Sticky traps can be compared between themselves and the amount of Macrolophus will not be underestimated when this height is used as a standard. When the crop grows or is lowered, the suspension height of the sticky trap will have to be adapted as well. Vooral voor Macrolophus en Nesidiocoris zal dit de vangkans aanzienlijk doen toenemen en het is praktisch werkbaar. Worden vangplaten dieper in het gewas opgehangen, dan zullen meer witte vliegen terug te vinden zijn maar minder Macrolophus. Omdat de vangkans van Macrolophus in het algemeen kleiner is dan de vangkans van witte vlieg is moet vooral met dit organisme rekening gehouden worden. De positie die Macrolophus bevoordeeld heeft dus de voorkeur. Daarnaast zal een praktische overweging ook doorslag gevend zijn. Van Nesidiocoris is het ook bekend dat ze in de kop voorkomen, ze zullen dus ook terug te vinden zijn op de vangplaat op deze positie. Het is een goed idee om altijd van deze hoogte uit te gaan. Zo kunnen vangplaten onderling vergeleken worden en wordt de populatie Macrolophus in het gewas niet onderschat. Wanneer het gewas zal zakken of groeien moet de vangplaat dus mee de hoogte van de kop volgen. Practice abstract 2 Optimal trap density for monitoring whitefly in tomato crops. Optimal trap density for monitoring whitefly in tomato crops. Sticky traps are a standard tool for monitoring flying pests (whitefly, thrips, aphids) in greenhouse vegetables. Also beneficials such as the predatory bugs Macrolophus pygmaeus and Nesidiocoris tenuis are attracted to sticky traps and can be monitored. For most insects the precision of monitoring increases with higher number of yellow traps. For commercial growers, the monitoring intensity is not only a matter of precision, but also of cost and benefit. Manual counting of whiteflies on sticky traps every week or two weeks is very labour-intensive. In practice, monitoring is often done with a lower trap number and/or lower frequency than recommended for best reliability. The optimal trap density for the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) was determined under Belgian tomato production conditions. This research showed that at least 40 yellow sticky traps per hectare, i.e. 1 sticky trap per 250 m², are necessary to get a reliable representation of the whitefly population in the tomato crop. That means 1 sticky trap every 10 rows and within the row about every 15 meters. In de praktijk wordt daarom vaak gemonitord met minder vangplaten en/of aan een lagere frequentie dan aanbevolen voor de beste betrouwbaarheid. De optimale vangplaatdensiteit voor de kaswittevlieg (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) werd bepaald onder Belgische tomatenteelt omstandigheden. Dit onderzoek toonde aan dat minstens 40 gele vangplaten per hectare, d.w.z. 1 vangplaat per 250 m², nodig zijn om een betrouwbaar beeld te verkrijgen van de wittevliegpopulatie in je tomatenteelt. Dat komt neer op 1 vangplaat om de 10 rijen en binnen de rij ongeveer om de 15 meter. In bell pepper, Macrolophus pygmaeus can be used to control Aphids. This predatory bug will mostly be found in the head of the plant, Aphids on the other hand are spread over the entire length of the plant. Macrolophus, as a generalists, feeds on other plagues or even plant material. In order for them to prey on Aphids, they have to appear close to each other. This can be achieved by leaf cutting at the bottom of the crops. Aphids are now forced to migrate upwards, making Macrolophus as a natural enemy more efficient because it is easier to find a prey. The best results controlling aphids were achieved by cutting leaves until 130 to 160 cm of the leaves remain. Yield and the number of produced fruits are highest when leaves are cut up to 160 to 190 cm, even higher than without intervention. It is advised to cut leaves until 160 cm remains, this should be repeated every two weeks. An experienced work force will quickly run through this and it increases the chances of biological control of Aphids by Macrolophus. Chemical applications can be avoided. De beste resultaten om bladluis te bestrijden worden geboekt bij een bladpluk waarbij 130 tot 160 cm van het gewas over blijft. De productie en aantal geproduceerde vruchten ligt het hoogst bij bladpluk van 160 tot 190 cm en liggen ook hoger dan wanneer niet wordt ingegrepen. Er wordt aangeraden om tweewekelijks blad te plukken tot 160 cm blad overblijft. Voor een geoefende werkkracht kan dit heel snel gaan en het zorgt ervoor dat de bladluizen gecontroleerd worden door Macrolophus. Chemisch ingrijpen tegen deze plaag kan dan vermeden worden. Macrolophus pygmaeus can sustain a population on sweet pepper in the absence of prey. It is a useful beneficial against several pest species such as thrips, whiteflies and aphids and should be released preventively so it can attack pests from the moment they appear in the greenhouse. Macrolophus pygmaeus should be introduced at a density of at least 1 bug per m² greenhouse and soon after planting, preferably within a week, to allow sufficient time for population build-up and dispersal before pests arrive. Releases should happen on a several locations within the greenhouse, each location consisting of a few plants. Four release locations per 500m² is a good rule of thumb. The first M. pygmaeus generation (±7 weeks) requires supplemental food to guarantee a swift population build-up. Artemia spp. cysts give the best results in greenhouse conditions and should be applied every two weeks, starting on the day of release and then three more times, at a rate of 0.04g per plant. Food needs to be supplemented in a full field fashion to facilitate dispersal of the predatory bugs in the greenhouse. Aphid control by M. pygmaeus is considerably improved by leaf pruning the lower leaves of sweet pepper plants. The foliage length of the plants should be kept at a length of 160cm-190cm. This can be done by pruning once a month up to 160cm and then letting the plants grow until they reach a foliage length of 190cm. Leaf pruning may also improve the biological control of aphids by specialists and of caterpillars by M. pygmaeus. The effect of pruning on sweet pepper production is limited and if present, tends to improve total production. A yellow sticky trap for monitoring flying insects in a tomato crop has a standard size of 25 by 10 cm. Nothing says that is the optimal size to obtain reliable counts of these insects. If there are many insects on the sticky trap, you can probably count a smaller area and vice versa. We studied this hypothesis using a extensive photo dataset of yellow sticky traps from a tomato crop with few and a lot of whiteflies (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) and the predatory bug Macrolophus pygmaeus. These sticky traps were divided into smaller squares and the number whiteflies and Macrolophus pygmaeus was counted per square. With a statistical analysis method it was determined how many squares you have to count exactly to obtain a reliable count of these two insects. The analyzed data shows that the more whiteflies on the sticky trap, the smaller the area of the sticky trap you have to count to maintain a high accuracy of the data. Continuous adjustment and recording of the necessary counting area quickly becomes too complex for the growers and scouters in the greenhouse. We therefore simply state that up to 50 whiteflies you have to count the complete sticky trap and from 50 whiteflies only 30% of the surface of the sticky trap. Select the same area on each trapping plate and record when only 30% of the sticky trap is counted. This way you can correct the counts afterward to the total area. Research has shown that the number of Macrolophus predatory bugs on a sticky trap can be very variable. The catch probability is also much smaller than that of whiteflies. For Macrolophus pygmaeus the rule is very simple: count the complete sticky trap. A lot of predatory bugs are needed before you can reduce the necessary counting area.

Niets zegt dat dit de optimale grootte is om betrouwbare tellingen van deze insecten te verkrijgen. Zitten er zeer veel insecten op de vangplaat dan kan je wellicht een kleinere oppervlakte tellen en omgekeerd. Deze hypothese hebben we onderzocht aan de hand van een uitgebreide fotodataset van vangplaten uit de tomatenteelt met weinig en met zeer veel witte vliegen (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) en Macrolophus pygmaeus. Deze vangplaten werden onderverdeeld in vele kleinere vakjes en witte vlieg en Macrolophus pygmaeus werden geteld per vakje. Met behulp van een statistische analysemethode werd bepaald hoeveel vakjes je nu precies moet tellen om toch nog een betrouwbare telling te verkrijgen van deze twee insecten. Uit de geanalyseerde data blijkt hoe meer witte vliegen op de vangplaat, hoe kleiner de oppervlakte van de vangplaat die je moet tellen om een hoge nauwkeurigheid van de data te behouden. Het continu bijstellen en registreren van de noodzakelijke teloppervlakte wordt echter al snel te complex voor de telers en scouters in de serre. We stellen daarom eenvoudig dat je tot 50 witte vliegen de volledige vangplaat telt en vanaf 50 witte vliegen slechts 30% van de oppervlakte van de vangplaat. Selecteer telkens dezelfde oppervlakte op iedere vangplaat en noteer wanneer er 30% wordt geteld. Zo kan je achteraf de tellingen corrigeren naar de totale oppervlakte. Onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat het aantal Macrolophus roofwantsen op een vangplaat heel variabel kan zijn. De vangstkans is ook een pak kleiner dan witte vlieg. Hier is de regel zeer simpel: tel de volledige vangplaat. Er zijn al zeer veel roofwantsen nodig vooraleer je de noodzakelijke teloppervlakte kan verminderen. The adults of A. aphidimyza are excellent seekers of aphid colonies in which the female deposits the eggs. The emerging orange colored larvae are those that have predatory capacity: they act by injecting a toxin into the aphid that subsequently gets paralyzed, its content dissolved and is then consumed by the developing larvae. Interestingly, A. aphidimyza can on feed different species of aphids, regardless of its size.

8 This predator is used as a tool always combined with parasitoids for biological control of aphids. Its use in crops is limited, since adults have nocturnal activity and are not active at temperatures below 15-16ºC. In greenhouses of southern Spain, the best time for release is at the end of February - beginning of March. Since its installation is slow, it forms part of a preventive strategy in which the predator is introduced as 1000 pupae deposited on a layer of wetted substrate inside a container. These containers must have small holes (approx. 1 cm), which allow emerging adults to leave and to locate the colonies of aphids in the crop. The estimated number of containers to be introduced in crops is between 6-8 per hectare. N. tenuis is a polyphagous predator that has become the most important natural enemy for the control of whitefly and Tuta absoluta in tomato crops in southeastern Spain. The release strategy of this predator in order to achieve its rapid establishment from the beginning of the crop is carried out through its installation in the seedling stage. This

9 technique involves the introduction of adults of N. tenuis between 7 and 12 days before transplantation, at a dose of between individual / plant, depending on the planting cycle (summer-winter). Afterwards, it is necessary to provide eggs of the moth Ephestia kuehniella as food (10 g / 1000 individuals of N. tenuis), not only in the nursery but also in the commercial greenhouse after the transplant and one week after transplantation. The predator feeds on the crop when there is low availability of prey, so it is important to monitor the populations to avoid damage to plants. The populations of N. tenuis can be managed using different active materials allowed in this crop. During the stage of installation of the predator, it is very important to follow a protocol of good practices in the nursery, related to the sealing of the facilities and especially with the use of chemical products, authorized and compatible with the predator. This method allows a reduction in costs, since the quantity of the introduced predator is lower than when it is inoculated directly in the field. It also facilitates the introduction, reaching a homogeneous distribution and the time required for installation. Yellow sticky traps are a standard tool for monitoring whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci), Macrolophus pygmaeus and Nesidiocoris tenius in greenhouse tomato crops. Winged insects can fly up quickly during scouting, making them difficult to recognize. By hanging sticky traps in the crop, it is quickly clear which flying pests, but also flying beneficials, are present in the greenhouse, even at low numbers. The insects have different qualities and this explains why the numbers on the sticky traps represent the real populations in different ratios. E.g. Adults of Bemisia tabaci fly up less easily than greenhouse whiteflies, so they are found less on the sticky trap. Also the height at which the sticky trap is suspended determines the amount of every insect that is trapped. It is best to hang the traps at the standard level, near the head of the plant. At least 40 yellow sticky traps per hectare, i.e. 1 sticky trap per 250 m², are necessary to get a reliable representation of the populations in the tomato crop. Depending on the pest pressure, it is best to check and replace the sticky traps weekly or every two weeks. They should also be replaced three days after spraying to check whether the treatment was effective. Count pests (white flies) and beneficials (predatory bugs). The number of beneficials on the sticky trap helps to estimate whether a pest is under control or not. It is the predator/prey ratio that determines whether you need to use extra biological control agents or whether you need to intervene chemically. In order to make optimal use of all the information collected during monitoring, it is advisable to present this in a visual way. The grid chart is an interesting tool for this purpose (4). A grid chart is a schematic overview of the greenhouse on which all rows and pole numbers are shown. Each sticky trap is counted weekly or biweekly and then gets a color code for each pest and beneficial. By displaying this on a map of the company, you can clearly see in which zone a problem occurs. By following this up over time, you can see the evolution of the pest or beneficial. This can be a support system in making treatment decisions. Gele vangplaten worden standaard gebruikt in tomatenserres, hiermee kunnen witte vlieg (Trialeurodes vaporariorum en Bemisia tabaci), Macrolophus pygmaeus en Nesidiocoris tenius gemonitord worden. Gevleugelde insecten kunnen tijdens het scouten snel opvliegen, waardoor ze moeilijk te herkennen zijn. Door vangplaten op te hangen in het gewas, is snel duidelijk welke vliegende plagen, maar ook nuttigen, in de serre aanwezig zijn, zelfs bij lage aantallen. De insecten hebben verschillende eigenschappen waardoor hun aantallen op de vangplaat in verschillende verhoudingen de reële populatie voorstellen. Adulten van Bemisia tabaci vliegen bijvoorbeeld minder snel op dan adulten van de kaswittevlieg, waardoor ze minder op de vangplaten te zien zijn. Ook de hoogte waarop de vangplaat wordt opgehangen bepaald in welke hoeveelheden insecten gevangen worden. Daarom worden vangplaten best standaard ter hoogte van de kop opgehangen. Minstens 40 gele vangplaten per hectare, d.w.z. 1 vangplaat per 250 m², zijn nodig om een betrouwbaar beeld te verkrijgen van de populaties in je tomatenteelt. Afhankelijk van de plaagdruk kan je de vangplaten het best wekelijks of om de twee weken bekijken en vervangen. Ook een drietal dagen na een bespuiting worden ze het best vervangen, om na te gaan of de behandeling effectief was. Tel plagen (witte vliegen) én nuttigen (roofwantsen). Het aantal nuttigen op de vangplaat helpt

11 om in te schatten of een plaag onder controle is of niet. Het is de predator/prooi verhouding die bepaalt of je extra biologische bestrijders moet inzetten of dat je chemisch moet ingrijpen. Om alle informatie, die verzameld wordt tijdens het monitoren, optimaal te kunnen gebruiken, is het aan te raden om dit op een visuele manier voor te stellen. Het opmaken van een grid chart is hierbij een interessant hulpmiddel (Figuur 4). Een grid chart is een schematisch overzicht van de serre waarop alle rijen en paalnummers zijn weergegeven. Elke vangplaat wordt wekelijks of om de twee weken geteld en krijgt vervolgens een kleurcode voor elke plaag en nuttige. Door dit weer te geven op een plattegrond van het bedrijf, zie je duidelijk in welke zone zich een probleem stelt. Door dit vervolgens op te volgen in de tijd, zie je de evolutie van de plaag of nuttigen. Op deze gegevens kan je je baseren om een beslissing te maken in verband met een behandeling.
