5 Voorwoord Al 25 jaar wordt een groep Apeldoorners door een ovale bal gefascineerd, allen idyllisch over hun spelletje genaamd rugby. In 1971 introduceerden enkele Britten het spelletje in Apeldoorn. Met goed resultaat, want de Rams bestaat nu al 25 jaar. In dit jubileumboek willen we u een overzicht geven van wat er zich zoal heeft afgespeeld in die kwart eeuw. - Wat betekende het café Van Neck voor de Rams? - Waar speelden we in Apeldoorn? - Wie waren de pioniers? - Hoe waren de bestuurssamenstellingen? - Wat waren de resultaten en wie haalden Oranje? Enkele vragen waar we een antwoord op trachten te geven in dit boek. Daarnaast hebben we aandacht voor de buitenwacht. Hoe denkt men in Apeldoorn over de Apeldoornse rugby-spelers? Ook de sociale kant van de rugbywereld zal in dit boek belicht worden. Zo hebben we onder andere ook andere clubs tijdelijke huisvesting gegeven op Marialust. Dit leuke boek, met verrassende anekdotes en achtergrondinformatie, is een belangrijk naslagwerk met een knipoog naar de toekomst. Wij hebben ons uiterste best gedaan om alle feiten zo correct en compleet mogelijk weer te geven. Desondanks kunnen er enige onvolkomenheden ingeslopen zijn, waarvoor onze excuses. Aanvullingen op de inhoud kunt u kwijt bij één van de auteurs, zodat bij eventuele toekomstige uitgaven hier rekening mee gehouden kan worden. U zult ontdekken dat het boek tweetalig is. Wij hebben enkele leden c.q. oud-leden uitgenodigd hun herinneringen met ons te delen. Enkele artikelen werden in de Engelse taal aangeleverd. Om de charme en structuur van deze verhalen te bewaren, hebben wij besloten deze teksten niet te vertalen. Vervolgens kunnen wij u melden, dat enkele onderwerpen meermaals aan de orde zullen komen. De oorzaak hiervoor ligt in de opzet van het boek. Tot slot wensen wij u veel leesplezier toe en spreken de wens uit dat over 25 jaar (seizoen ) weer een jubileumboek het levenslicht mag aanschouwen. 8 INLEIDING 25 JAAR SAMENSPEL Voor mij en een dertigtal andere directbetrokkenen blijft 6 december 1971 in meer dan één opzicht een gedenkwaardige dag. In de privésfeer betekende die dag voor mijn vrouw en mij iets meer dan gewoon de dag na Sinterklaas, want wij waren toen precies elf jaar getrouwd. Overdag hadden we daaraan al de nodige aandacht én tijd kunnen schenken, zodat het mij werd vergeven dat ik s avonds met het complete voorlopige bestuur ( the board zoals dat toen in goed clubspraakgebruik heette) in het inmiddels afgebroken Café Van Neck tegenover Garage Bakker de eerste - en nog steeds enige - Apeldoornse rugbyvereniging kon oprichten. In de annalen staan de namen van de leden van dat bestuur vermeld, maar eigenlijk werd The Rams, Rugby Football Club Apeldoorn (de officiëel geregistreerde naam) opgericht door de dertig of veertig enthousiastelingen die zich toen al meer dan een jaar in Apeldoorn met rugby bezighielden. Als we dus feestelijk stilstaan bij de oprichting van de Rams (zoals de club kortweg wordt genoemd) moeten we eigenlijk terugdenken aan die groep mannen - én vrouwen - die door hun geestdrift, sportieve instelling, improvisatiekunde en mateloos incasseringsvermogen het mogelijk maakten dat een door hen geaccepteerd (niet gekozen!) voorlopig bestuur de nieuwe vereniging een officiële status gaf. Die eerste Rams waren voornamelijk lieden uit Angelsaksische landen die meehielpen van Apeldoorn een soort tweede silicon-valley te maken, wat jaren later niet zo best bleek te zijn gelukt. Als een soort rugbynomaden kwamen zij in de loop van 1970 schuchter in beeld, toen zij op openbare speelvelden en soms op door vee verlaten weilanden hun onblusbare liefde aan het lederen ovaal beleden en na afloop van de wedstrijd rond hun inmiddels brandende dorst ergens in de binnenstad een vrolijk feest bouwden, samen met hun sportieve tegenstanders. Weldra kregen zij steun van gewone Laaglanders uit Apeldoorn en omgeving die enige - soms zeer beperkte - rugbykennis hadden of die zich op een andere manier tot deze sport der sporten voelden aangetrokken. Rugby trok in die dagen wel wat meer belangstelling dan daarvoor, maar was bij velen nog onbekend en derhalve... onbemind. Op de middelbare school had ik al kennis gemaakt met rugby en enige algemene bedrevenheid in die sport geleerd bij RC t Gooi, de club die toen net zijn koperen jubileum had gevierd. Wat later, in het begin van de jaren zestig, kreeg ik gelegenheid om via de Nederlandse Rugbybond de rugbysport meer bekendheid te geven. Eerst als propagandist en later als bondssecretaris. Toen 'emigreerde ik eind 1967 met mijn gezin uit Het Gooi naar Apeldoorn. Op mijn gemeentelijk Bureau Culturele Zaken kwam ik in contact met Mike Brown, Stewart Morgan, Marcus Bartlett en consorten. Aangezien het omhoogstoten van Apeldoorn in de vaart der volkeren min of meer in mijn takenpakket zat, was het niet bezwaarlijk deze zwervende rugbyers wat structurele support te geven, want sport - en zeker rugby! - mag tot de cultuur worden gerekend. En aldus geschiedde. Het hondendrollenveld aan de Buys-Ballotstraat (het werd later intensief geschoond en nu staan er rustige huizen) was het eerste rugbyspeelveld. Veld 8 in het Orderbos bood gelukkig meer faciliteiten, zoals kleed- en doucheruimte, zodat verkleedpartijen in auto s niet meer hoefden en iedereen zich na afloop fatsoenlijk van modder en zweet kon ontdoen. Wel was daar het moeizame gezeul met vlaggenmasten die telkens over een afstand van een paar honderd meter bij Berg en Bos weggehaald (en teruggebracht!) moesten worden. Het vastbinden en losmaken aan de voetbaldoelpalen was overigens ook geen sinecure. Penningmeester Barry Brookfield spekte er fanatiek de clubkas door persoonlijk uit grote kratten beugelflessen Grolschbier langs de lijn te verkopen, want verschillende toeschouwers kregen meestal al tijdens de wedstrijd dorst. (Dat schijnt nog steeds te gebeuren, heb ik vernomen.) Uitzicht op een eigen veld en clubhuis kwam er 8

9 toen dit zootje ongeregeld het aandurfde de officiële interland Nederland-(West-)Duitsland op het door de hockeyers van Ares verlaten sportpark Marialust te organiseren. In november 1972 kwamen er ondanks regen en kou bijna rugbyvrienden en gewone nieuwsgierige burgers naar dit spektakel kijken, dat grandioos door het Nederlandse team werd verloren. Maar de organisatie oogstte allerwegen lof. Het bleek daarna tenminste voor de kersverse rugbyclub vrij makkelijk te zijn van de gemeente toestemming te krijgen tegen schappelijke voorwaarden voor vast dit nog steeds magnifieke rugbyveld ( the most beautiful site of Europe zoals één of andere chauvinist ooit opmerkte) te mogen bespelen. Alhoewel de naam rugby football anders doet vermoeden, is rugby een handbalspel waarbij ook de voeten gebruikt mogen worden en niet andersom. Een ander voornaam kenmerk van rugby is dat de speler die de bal draagt altijd de spits is van het team. De andere spelers daarachter geven support. Krijgt een andere speler de bal dan vormt díe de spits en zo wordt rugby, dankzij dit flitsende samenspel, een boeiende gebeurtenis. Het gehele team draagt op die manier in een voortdurend wisselende opstelling de bal naar de trylijn van de tegenstander. Inmiddels heeft The Rams Rugby Football Club Apeldoorn dat samenspel al 25 jaar volgehouden. Niet alleen door de spelers in het veld, maar ook daarbuiten. Want samen de bal dragen is - in overdrachtelijke zin - ook aan de orde bij de vele vrijwilligers die voor de training, het clubhuis, het veld, de palen, de begeleiding e.d. zorgen en ook voor degenen die het bestuur vormen. Samen de bal dragen zorgt voor de broodnodige continuïteit in de vereniging. Die spontane eendracht in verscheidenheid leidde in het verleden tot de oprichting van de Rams en zorgt vandaag voor een goede toekomst. 10 1. RUGBY IN NEDERLAND Het sprookje van William Webb Ellis is elke rugbyer wel bekend. Het sprookje van Pim Mulier zal menig rugbyer echter aan het denken zetten. Over de echtheid van het bestaan van William Webb Ellis wordt al heel lang getwijfeld. Was het niet ene Matthew Bloxan die met de bal in de hand de eerste try drukte? Het jaar 1823 betekent veel voor de Engelsen als het om rugby gaat. Men moet alleen niet vergeten dat William Webb Ellis in 1823 niet meer op school zat, maar dat hij als dominee werkzaam was in Londen. Het rugby verhaal van Ellis wankelt op zijn grondvesten. In Nederland weet men één ding wel. De uitvinder van de Elfstedentocht is ook de man die het rugby in Nederland draagkracht heeft gegeven; Pim Mulier. Rond 1875 werd er al rugby gespeeld in ons kikkerlandje, uiteraard in bescheiden vorm. Op enkele kostscholen was het te spelen. Mede dankzij de invloed van diverse Engelse leraren. In 1870 ziet Pim Mulier, als 5 jarig jochie, enkele Engelse jongens van zijn kostschool Schreuders tegen een ovalen bal schoppen. Een paar jaar later, Mulier is dan 10 jaar oud, ziet hij bij toeval in het Belgische Oostende opnieuw een aantal Engelsen bezig met rugby. In 1879 ziet Mulier bij toeval een rugbybal liggen in een Amsterdams warenhuis, De Gruyter geheten. Nieuwsgierig geworden naar de sport koopt hij de bal en wist hij een spelregelboekje te versieren. Ergens op een weilandje in Haarlem begint hij met een aantal vriendjes te rugbyen. Op 15 september 1879 richt Mulier, dan slechts 14 jaar oud, de Haarlemse Football Club op. Het rugby in Nederland is geboren. Maar echt lang bestaat de club niet. Voornamelijk de ouders van het groepje rugbyers zijn tegen het spel. Om elke winter nou 6 of 7 kapotte truien te hebben was volgens de maatstaven van de 19-e eeuw niet correct. Zodoende gaat Mulier in 1883 over op voetbal, dat toen nog Association heette. Rugby stierf dus langzaam maar zeker uit. In 1910 komen diverse Zuid-Afrikaanse studenten naar Nederland. Zij voeren het Engelse spel opnieuw in. Met name in de studentenwereld slaat het spel goed aan. Dat Nederland in de Eerste Wereldoorlog neutraal was, heeft alleen maar goed gedaan aan het rugby. Op diverse Nederlandse stranden is er rugby gespeeld tussen diverse Engelse schipbreukelingen, van getorpedeerde boten op de Noordzee, en Nederlandse studenten. In 1918, op 24 september, wordt de eerste Nederlandse Rugbyclub opgericht. Het is DSRC (Delftse Studenten Rugby Club), een club die, heden-ten-dage, nog steeds acte de presence geeft. Al na een paar maanden had de club 130 leden. Tegenstanders had men niet echt en dus werd er vaak tegen buitenlandse ploegen gespeeld. In 1919 werden weer twee clubs opgericht. De Amsterdamse Studenten Rugby Vereniging en de Groningsche Studenten Rugby Club Forward. Op 7 september 1920 wordt de Nederlandse Rugby Bond opgericht (de NRB). Twee maanden later wordt RSSV (Rotterdam) opgericht. Reden genoeg voor de vier clubs om een tournee door het land te maken. Groningen wordt als eerste landskampioen. In 1923 sterft het rugby opnieuw uit. De bond wordt opgeheven. Amsterdam, Groningen en Rotterdam stoppen en Delft kijkt wederom uit naar ploegen uit België, Duitsland en Engeland. Vanaf 1932 zijn er weer 4 clubs. Amsterdamse Rugby Voetbal Club, RC Eindhoven, Hilversumse RC en uiteraard DSRC. Zij leveren de manschappen voor de eerste interland tegen België (6-6). Op 1 oktober 1932 wordt de Nederlandse Rugby Bond nieuw leven ingeblazen. Aan de Warmoesstraat , in Hotel- Restaurant Fleissig, begon de Nederlandse Rugby Bond aan een tweede leven. 11 2. DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN THE RAMS R.F.C. APELDOORN 2.1 GEBOORTE VAN THE RAMS R.F.C. APELDOORN In het begin van de jaren zeventig waren er bij Philips in Apeldoorn veel buitenlanders aan het werk. Zij waren ingehuurd om aan de computer software, de documentatie en vormgeving van de Philips computers van die tijd te werken. Onder deze mensen met diverse nationaliteiten was een vrij grote groep Engelsen. Sommigen van hen misten hun favoriete sport, rugby en om hun verdriet te verbergen waren ze regelmatig te vinden in het kleine café Van Neck in Kerschoten. Hier, in dit café, werden de eerste ideeën voor rugby in Apeldoorn geboren. Besloten werd om wat trainingen en een wedstrijd te regelen. Diverse spelers en bijna-spelers werden door een proces van vriendelijke overtuiging geronseld en zo werd het allemaal in gang gezet. De eerste trainingen vonden plaats op een open veld aan de Buys-Ballotstraat en snel hierna werd een wedstrijd georganiseerd. Deze eerste wedstrijd was tegen Wageningen Studenten op 30 oktober 1971 in Wageningen, omdat er op dat moment geen geschikte gelegenheid was in Apeldoorn. In dit prille stadium was er al belangstelling voor rugby van Nederlanders in Apeldoorn, getuige de aanwezigheid van een Nederlander, Chris Schaap, in de eerste wedstrijd van de Rams. Een andere, niet meer spelende, Nederlander uit de beginperiode was Bas Hageman (oud-international voor België en scheidsrechter), die wegens zijn gemeentelijke contacten een onmisbare kracht bleek tijdens de startperiode. Na het succes van de eerste wedstrijd, gewonnen met 8-34, kwamen er meer wedstrijden en begon er het gevoel te komen dat het geheel in een wat meer georganiseerd jasje gegoten moest worden. De volgende opmerking wordt de laatste aanleiding om tot een club te komen en werd gemaakt door Barrie Brookfield, de penningmeester van het voorlopige bestuur, op 30 november 1971: "We can't go on without money. We need a couple of cheap balls for our training sessions". Hierna werd besloten lidmaatschapsgeld te heffen Eerste Wedstrijd tegen Wageningen Foto: Pete Hopcut van 5,-- per jaar en 1,-- per wedstrijd. De officiële oprichting van The Rams R.F.C. Apeldoorn vond een week later plaats op 6 december 1971 in café Van Neck in de Gazellestraat. Tijdens deze vergadering werd de RAM geadopteerd als het officiële symbool van onze club en er werd besloten dat onze shirts wit zouden zijn met een zwarte ram erop. 11

12 HERINNERINGEN VAN DE LEDEN: THE MYTH OR REALITY In the beginning A young man had a dream. During this dream he was the leader of a band of worshippers of the oval ball. He talked to others about this dream. They said: "You are truly a dreamer". He pursued his dream and during his wanderings he came across an old man. The old man had been a worshipper of the oval ball. He listened to the young man's dream and then he spoke: "'Young man, your dream is worthy, but you live in a strange and foreign land. In this land they worship the golden round ball. You must go back to your native land to obtain your dream. At this the young man was crestfallen and cast his eyes to the ground. He said: "O, Master, can't you help me to form a grand temple of the oval ball in this forbidden land"? The old man saw the sadness in the eyes of the young man and he said: "I will try to assist you to make your dream come true. But first you must find 12 followers of the oval ball, otherwise the dream will fail. The young man said: " Yes, I will find the 12". Then after thinking for a moment he said:..." but where must I seek out the 12"? But the old man said: " Many former followers of the oval ball have taken to evil ways. Here is where you will find your followers. Visit the discotheques, the bars and houses of ill repute and seek out former followers of the oval ball and revert them back to the ways of righteousness". " Master, to be true followers of the oval ball and to have a grand temple we need 15!" "Yes, this is true. Your 12, yourself, myself and on the day necessity will provide us with an extra follower for every time we go to worship". The young man set about his task with enthousiasm and after several days of searching through the discotheques, the bars and houses of ill repute he had found enough followers and the Apeldoorn Rugby Football Club was founded. Here ended the old testament. Designer of the Rams-logo After it was decided that the RFC was to be called Rams we approached a member who was a designer and asked him to design a logo. After many attempts he admitted he had never seen a ram. In fact the closest he had ever been to a ram was when he ate a roast leg of lamb for his Sunday lunch or had seen "Lambchop" (a children s TV character) on the TV. At this point in time we were lost. Then to our rescue came a lady member of the club. Her father had a set of rams horns in his garage which he kindly loaned to the club. Our designer copied this set of rams horns and we have our magnificent logo today. Crisis Within a short time it became apparent that true leadership was needed within the club in the financial area. The lack of this was creating a crisis within the club. Into this void strode a giant man from the north of England, he said Eeh bah gum lad, there s a reet problem ere. From that moment he took up the reins of office and became the saver of the club. He collected all dues from members who defaulted and organized fund raising and other activities that were to put money into the club cash and enabled the club to survive and become what it is today. 13 "GEBOORTEGEGEVENS VAN DE RAMS" (geb. 6 december 1971) Deze titel is gekozen om gegevens aan te reiken en/of toe te voegen bij hetgeen jijzelf al dan niet hebt meebeleefd bij de geboorte van The Rams R.F.C. Apeldoorn in In 'Neerlands lichtstad' nam een onderneming ooit het mooie besluit om in de Apeldoornse weilanden een afdeling te beginnen. Al snel ontstond de behoefte aan meer hulp van buitenaf, welke werkkracht ondermeer werd gevonden in het buitenland. Hierdoor kreeg men in Apeldoorn te doen met meer dan 10 verschillende nationaliteiten. Er werd hard gewerkt, maar er bleef ook tijd voor ontspanning en een van de hoogtepunten voor de Amerikaanse collega's was de wekelijkse vertoning van de N.F.C. (American Football) verslagen op film in de CSI-kantine. De films werden wekelijks uit Duitsland overgevlogen en hierdoor bleef men dus up-todate. De mogelijkheden tot ontspanning werden ondermeer bekend gemaakt in een wekelijks verschijnend overzicht dat in het Engels aangaf waarheen men zich zoal in zijn vrije tijd kon begeven voor zowel cultureel als sportief tijdsverdrijf. De werknemers werden zelf steeds aktiever op sportgebied, zomers buiten op een veldje en 's winters werd er zowaar een sportzaal gehuurd voor van alles en nog wat (volleyball, basketball, badminton etc.). Ik zou niet weten hoe, wie of wat het besluit deed ontstaan om rugby te gaan spelen, maar opeens waren er rugbyspelers. Aan elke nieuwe collega werd gevraagd of hij ook rugby speelde en op welke positie. Werkneemsters waren er natuurlijk ook, maar rugby voor vrouwen was nog niet in zicht voor Apeldoorn. Ik vraag me trouwens af of al die mensen die gingen meespelen hun 'rugby kit' bij zich hadden. Als dat het geval is dan had je zeker te doen met de ware liefhebbers. Stel je voor, solliciteren naar een baan in het buitenland en dan heb je een rugby-uitrusting bij je en dat in Holland, waar rugby, weliswaar, bestond maar niet alom bekend was! Alles goed en wel, er moet wel enorm veel over rugby gepraat zijn, zowel in de computercentra als in De Mot, De Philosophe waar Braakhekke nog zijn pollepel zwaaide, De Olifant, in het Oude Huys en in al die flats in Einsteinlaan, Voltastraat etc. Het resultaat was dat de Rams werd opgericht in Van Neck's café. Ikzelf ben ooit door een dom toeval supportend lid geworden en vanaf dat moment trok ik regelmatig mee met de Rams langs de Nederlandse velden. Mopperend soms, omdat de spelers wel een warme douche konden nemen na afloop van een wedstrijd in de stromende regen en omdat de toeschouwers maar om de kachel moesten zien droog en warm te worden. Daar tegenover staan de warme, lome middagen op 'sappige weiden' wanneer de rugbyspelers hun harde hete gevecht aangingen en je als toeschouwer heerlijk genieten kon van 'just being there'. Er werd in die tijd nog volop gezongen en wat in de 'kerk-bar' in de Sumatralaan uit die RAMS RFC 25 jaar 'volle borsten' kwam was eigenlijk niet bestemd voor meisjes-oren. Veel is er op rugbygebied veranderd sinds de prille dagen van de Rams, maar ik hoop dat ieder Rams-lid nog net zoveel plezier beleeft in deze club als dat in de beginperiode het geval was. M. 14 RAMS REMINISCENCES The dates, names and venues in this account are completely unreliable and should be checked by reference to others who were there and whose brain cells have not yet succumbed to alcoholic deterioration. I have, as an English gentleman, of course disguised the names of any young ladies with whom we cavorted. I joined Computer Sciences International, by the skin of my teeth, in the Autumn of The interview took place in London and consisted of one or two preliminary questions of a technical computing nature until the interviewer discovered that I played squash, upon which we had a long discussion on the merits of the game. Clearly satisfied with my forehand technique he promised to get in touch as soon as possible. I then took off to Bristol on a short contract, staying in a wonderful hotel, sadly now demolished, the Hawthornes, with seven different bars. A job offer to join the CSI data centre in Apeldoorn was duly sent to my parent's home in Sussex. Unfortunately I had by this time become entangled with a well built young programmer named Jane, whose father was a publican in Wales; a potentially fatal combination. Having finished the contract we visited her Cardiff home for a weekend, where to my horror, I found he was only a tenant in a Watney's pub (not that we were very discriminating over our beer in those days - it all went down at one and five pence a pint ) - my vision of inheriting the family hostelry faded along with his discovery of my shoes in his daughter's bed room. On the long train journey home I stopped off at AWRE Aldermaston to visit friends and ex-work colleagues, who persuaded me to stay until the Saturday since the 4th team were short of players; this was not a new problem. In fact, when I started playing rugger at AWRE I went through the first half of the season thinking we were somehow allied to League since we never had more than 13 players on the pitch. Finally I arrived at my hometown on Sunday evening just as the seven o'clock shutters were going up so I wandered down to see the gang at the Fox and Hounds for a quick gargle before going home. Ebby Wiggins sternly informed me that my father had been inquiring as to my whereabouts for a week since the CSI letter was burning a hole on the mantleshelf. I finally made it home and wrote back an acceptance. I arrived in Apeldoorn at the start of Autumn and immediately got in contact with John Stewart who was working down in Eindhoven for Philips. John and I had previously worked together at ESOC in Darmstadt for two years where we had first played for Offenbach and then started a rugby team called the Exiles composed of all the various nations that manned the ESOC computer centre. Our players individual temperaments seemed to match their nationalities in that we had a very dour, non-talking, non-kitty-paying Scottish RAMS RFC 25 jaar second row; an absolute head-case front row, comprising mad German, madder Englishman, maddest Dutchman, all with thirsts like demented alcoholics. Of the back row one flanker was French, only slightly crazy but always reeking of garlic; one was Portuguese with a very limited understanding of any other language, not a clue on the laws of rugger and not much idea about the rest of life either. Our number 8 was Spanish, capable of incredible bravery but also of unbelievable foolishness. A squat English scrum half who never spoke much (off pitch his mouth was always in a glass). The fly half was Irish with great verve in attack and the ability to shout at others all the time, but unfortunately he had never understood that tackling was required of him and resolutely left it to others. The backs were a mixture of French and Italians, when the line went forward together and passes went to hand they looked magnificent but, as more often occurred, things broke down, the tantrums, screaming of accusations, threats, general mayhem and renting of hair was less than expected of women!!i have lots of memories of great games playing clubs round Frankfurt in deep snow, frosts, blizzards or alternatively down in Heidelberg sweating buckets in the blinding sunshine. Many English and American service teams, which were very hard games indeed, but anyway that's another story and I digress... John was playing for Eindhoven firsts, so every weekend for the whole of that season I would train it down to his place, we would drink all Friday & Saturday and chase girls and then 14

15 attempt to play rugger on the Sunday mornings. I never could get used to the continental Sunday fixtures - ghastly idea - always smashed the night before work. Often on a Sunday night the trains would cease running halfway back to Apeldoorn and I would sleep over on Utrecht station going straight into work Monday morning - unshaved - unwashed - unloved. Some great characters of the Eindhoven club spring to mind : Teun who knew all the English rugger songs but in an accent so vile no-one could recognise the words; a huge 2nd row with a major grin; Fred who could fart in tune, a very fierce prop who always wore a toupee apart from when he played - no-one had ever seen him actually remove or replace the rug - all of a sudden it was either off as he ran out on the pitch or on as he emerged from the changing rooms! Alan Macdoo; Irish; Neeters; Alan Snow but enough... it is of Apeldoorn we speak... After stints in the Bloemink (where we stay each Easter as though in a 60 style time warp - furniture - cloth wall coverings etc - I dread the year we find it changed) and then the Hotel Suisse, (what a marvellous atmosphere - wooden surrounds - great traditional feel - billiards table - absolute crime that they knocked Stoffels and this place down). I stayed in Wildernislaan with David Collier and later Bazza Brookfield; Mike Brown at this time was down in Rome but would appear occasionally to remove bunting from the garden just before the landlord visited. We used to go running through Berg en Bos getting lost and going for miles. Mike had a t heory that you could run yourself sober but unfortunately we drank so much in those days that the effort expended almost rendered us unfit for any form of sport at all. Maybe that's why Mike's legs are somewhat short? Since I was some years his junior I used to be incensed that he could run further and faster than I could - mile after mile we'd lope along, both waiting for the other to say ''Let's turn back now". Further along our road was a house with a high double fence behind which two panthers prowled - used to put the fear of God up us when we'd come stumbling round the corner and a black flash would swoop alongside albeit behind the fence - big sprint for home. In the early days there were a number of Americans at the data centre and they occasionally organised scratch gridiron games - naturally when they passed the ball to any of us rugger players we immediately passed the ball backwards amongst ourselves until we reached the touch down area - this used to infuriate the Americans but is not against the laws I believe (or wasn't then) and 1 have never understood why more games do not involve passing. We would then adjourn to a bar and extol the virtues of soccer, gridiron and rugby league or union according to our preference - hour after hour we would rubbish the merits of the other's games and puerile tactics and deride our friends for actually playing such a foolish sport - somewhere out of this was borne in Mike and my minds the idea that we probably knew sufficient players living in RAMS RFC 25 jaar Apeldoorn to put out the core of a team and we could surely find some extra runners to make up numbers. A quick count of likely players ensued : Mike Brown (1st team Wellington scrum half since the year dot - Jersey - Canada - Den Haag just a few of the teams at which he had harangued them for hours with tactical play theory ) had already claimed to have hung his boots up but had them ready for instant retrieval - a truer friend and a better player no man could wish for. I have played alongside Mike back home in Somerset and been to countless Internationals with Mike and Marilyn - I think it was an England v France when Mike was coaching Wellington and had bought one of the first videos around in the UK so that he could study the game and highlight points for the boys - we spent most of lunchtime at the White Hart, Osterley on the way to Twickers, putting down pints of Fullers Pride while Mike explained at length and in mind - numbing detail what a video was all about - ''Whose round?" - "No we'd better get to the match" - "Why it's a three o' clock kick-off" - "Oh bugger" says Marilyn " I set it for two!" missed half the match - Mike celebrated his 50th at Cardiff Arms Park - few friends and thousands of his favourite people: Welsh, Kiwis and Aussies... Dick Barton - wonderful bear of a character with a personality to match - I was never quite sure of what he did or who he worked for - never saw 15

16 him at CSl or Philips - he used to appear at our parties with a grin from ear to ear and was always saying "aren't we having a marvellous time - isn't it great to be alive" - unfortunately it was always at this point that one of his aggressive girlfriends would turn up and drag out for a good talking to - hours would go and each time you went for a pee there would be Dick trying to explain why he was out drinking with the boys and had forgotten her. I know nothing of Dick's previous clubs or rugger experience - he was a good slow forward and a better referee... Peter Twydell - second row reaching up to the skies - looked the part and talked a blinder of a game but often experienced problems in actually catching the ball at line-outs which is principally why we played him. After we had shipped some pint mugs over and had them installed in the Mot we discovered that Peter could unhinge his jaw and slurp a pint down in 2.3 seconds - this won us huge bets from the opposition who had never seen that much liquid in a single glass before, let alone imagined that anyone would be foolish enough to chuck it down their necks in one belt This ability and having a good voice secured Peter's position in the team... Marcus Bartlett - excellent back row player who hadn't played since leaving school but took to the game like the great coarse rugger player into which he became - always keen to play whatever the weather or condition of the pitch - always in the action - always with a ready grin - always first to start the songs - control the games - a true ( and unsung ) servant of the club - he it was who designed the Rams logo still in use ( I once visited his design office in Philips where they were modelling Chevy type swept back computers!) - Marcus put a lot of time into the group van which we used to great effect - on our first visit to the Munchen Bierfestival Marcus found a pool of litre glass steins and we decided to take 15 to be placed in the Rams club bar for the use of the first team players. We stacked them away on the van floor and covered them up. Returning later that night we found Tim Stratford cavorting with some buxom blonde; not only were the van springs rocking furiously but the glasses could be heard chinking dangerously; without a word Marcus flung the back door wide and dragged the couple, still grunting, out onto the grass - the 1st team glasses were saved. Marcus became a leading player and organiser for the Hampstead club when he returned and I occasionally see him at Twickenham at the Internationals - I shall try to roust him out for Easter 97 Barry ''Bazza'' Brookfield - not a player ( although I seem to remember that he did turn out a couple of times and we had to worry about protecting him, but undoubtedly the man without whose financial acumen the club would not have got off the ground or continued for long - lovely man with a terrible stutter. I was once at a posh dinner with him where he tried for a long time to order fish; after several attempts the waiter sympathetically murmured, "Fish Sir" at which Bazza let rip: " Oh for fuck's RAMS RFC 25 jaar sake!" I once fought a duel with him (umbrella versus Dave's new sword ) all round the house, upstairs along the corridor, into Dave's bedroom, over Dave and girlfriend in bed and back out the door again... good scout... Roger Huddle - soccer player and hard man extraordinaire - happy to turn out when the numbers were low - good ball player but loved to run the game down - " no real skill -should use your feet more " - Roger and his wife Jeni were unable to use their garage at Einsteinlaan since once we got the consession from Grolsch, it was filled to the brim with beer cases - a few years ago on one of his visits to the UK when 1 was still playing for Ruislip I managed to persuade Roger to play since we were short - we drove down to Abbey in the fog stopping at every pub on the left, ostensibly to get directions but l'm sure so that we would be too late to play since he was becoming increasingly unsure about actually turning out - we did arrive late but played for the opposition whereupon Rog scored the winning try in his last rugger match - I think he's stopped running the game down now since he supports Australia. Tim Stratford - mad as a hatter - wide boy - glorious grin and broken nose - always into trouble - good mate - not a brilliant player but would occasionally turn out with some pushing... Mike Staddon - good friend, work colleague and confirmed soccer man - he sold me his bromfiets 16

17 in the CSI carpark - since I had to get home on it he gave me a one minute demo omitting the brake - (it was cold at the time) - as I went arse over tit off the roadside head first into the ditch from which only he could extract me all I could hear was him howling with uncontrollable laughter - an excellent man to have on your side in any situation - what a stalwart of the Rams club Mike has become - an excellent player - good team man - stern referee and he continually takes the piss out of me - Peter Pan Staddon. Big John Mullins and his weird brother who went very strange and with whom Hilly Paalman spent hours / days talking - they had seen us practising on the grass at Buys Ballot Straat and decided to "mosey on over and join in " - John was a brilliant player - very fast, very big, very balanced, could break a tackle, side step off left or right and was big enough to bring powerful players down - his brother was also pretty good in the backsunfortunately they were very straight Americans who could never quite understand the social aspects of the game : drinking, singing and falling over! - lovely family. Another player who drifted in at the start by seeing us out playing was Rick Bulder - Dutch / American merchant seaman I think - fairly good ball player, knew few of the laws, whenever you desperately needed him to play you'd find he was half way to Rio. Cliff Swain - ex Old Creightonian player - good on the pitch but was it a pain getting him there - would never train or go for a run - fortunately he worked with us at CSI and lived in the flats so by dint of continually telling him he had to turn out we sometimes succeeded. He had a delicious girlfriend and if all else failed we would occasionally get Clivey Knott to "kidnap" her - only to be released on the condition that Swain turned out. Robby Bos - terrific fly half but temperamental - went to South America just after the plane crash where they ate the fly half first - we warned him to change positions - great to see him turn up some Easters on the Friday - Marcus and I once stayed at his mother's house in Breda after playing the Dutch Commandos - fearful game in which we just won by penalties because they did not understand the laws - they were of course eight times fitter than us and very aggressive. Marcus, Rob and I went out on he town ( to which I had never been ) and they left me chatting furiously to some scintillating piece of goods who I actually got to walk all the way home, unfortunately that was it though and I then had to stumble round Breda trying to find maison Bos - strangely enough after some hours I did find it again but it is not true that I shamed Rob's mother by taking all of my clothes off with the windows open - sheer imagination... Bit players included : Billy Urie (think he played 1/2 games - soccer player) Clivey Knott - great guy - mad as a hatter - again a soccer boy RAMS RFC 25 jaar Arsenal fanatic - spoke to him in Hong Kong when I was there for the Sevens but failed to meet up in the drunken ramblings - Aard Treure - amazing voice - long hair - good little player - went to Ireland - Ben (from Rinska and Ben) social worker used to bring along young fast lads some of whom turned out brilliantly - Pete Hopcutt who was a good player before his terrible accident - a guy called Norman (?) friend of Swains did he actually ever play. Robby Adema - great guy - much maligned - mad as a snake - Dutch basket ball player - very good skills if only he could get fit and turn up - hard man - once came along to a game with three "good-time" gals from the Red Light area where he ran a bar (the Scottish bar) - after the match when the songs and games started the girls were delighted with "Hold Him Down You Zulu Warriors" and immediately started to strip as well - I seem to remember that this did not go down well with some club members.. Marcus and I were once drinking in his wild bar in Amsterdam, sitting at the counter by a plate of hard boiled eggs - in the well of the bar were two groups of drunken sailors - Norwegian and Finnish itching for a fight - suddenly all the lights failed - the next thing I felt this terrific blow to the side of my head - as I reeled around the lights came back on - Marcus had lobbed an egg into the throng to start things up but unfortunately clipped me in the process - this lead to an egg duel in the road outside - three eggs each at 15 paces. Met Robby by surprise in a pub in London where he was 17

18 recruiting players for the Amsterdam Sevens visited the Three Musketeers bar a couple of times for some absolutely wild sessions - last heard he's gone to Oz. And finally...stu "Loper" Morgan - moderate player in the backs but a good "hearty fellow" for organising the beer whip and leading the singing - played for AWRE, Haywards Heath and the Darmstadt Exiles... There must be lots of players I've missed... sorry but these were the guys around at the starting up - through that first summer to Autumn period getting things off the ground. I was only in Apeldoorn for the first three official games - although I visited to play later - so lots of the characters and names come later that others will remember. Having decided we'd form a team the hard work of organisation began - we made up posters - took out adverts in the press - explored the locality for suitable venues - contacted the Gemeente and were quickly put in touch with Bas Hageman (lovely to see him at Easter recently - I seem to remember him playing and like the other Bazza we had to protect him - and I certainly recall him reffing - long baggy shorts - bit like some of his decisions!! - excellent fellow all-round) - Bas then took over the ''official'' side to get a pitch and playing rights and a club house etc, etc and Mike and I concentrated on training and turning out a team - lots of impromptu sessions at Buys Ballot ground. Lots of Mike's training techniques and trying to sustain interest / fitness - it really was very difficult (as I have found out since when attempting to get a team for other sports together) to motivate enough people with the belief that they really will benefit and gain by having a run - keeping fit - sweating some of that beer and fags out - there really wasn't any public awareness of health as there is today; and that rugger is a great game to play. What we did was emphasise the good fun - comradeship - singing - games etc - that to me has always been the essence of the game.... see you at Easter. Stu Morgan 18
