4 Voorwoord Christian Prudhomme Directeur van de Tour de France - Director of the Tour de France Utrecht, een stad met hart voor de fiets In Utrecht beoefent men de kunst van het geduld op schone wijze. In 2002 ontvingen wij de eerste brief waarin de stad zich kandidaat stelde voor de Grand Départ van de Tour de France. Het heeft dus meer dan tien jaar geduurd voordat dit plan werkelijkheid zou worden. Tijdens het hele wordingsproces bleef dit plan echter een grote wens en hoewel het verschillende malen werd uitgesteld, was er nooit sprake van afstel, noch van de ene en noch van de andere kant. De Tour herkende namelijk in Utrecht meteen een stad die de fiets een warm hart toedraagt en bereidt is zich in te zetten voor de bevordering daarvan. Nog meer dan in andere Nederlandse steden is de fiets hier koning. Het bewijs is wel de indrukwekkende rijwielstalling met een capaciteit van ruim plaatsen die bij het centraal station wordt gebouwd. Voor de activisten van onze soort kan een dergelijk bouwwerk zich meten met de Dom, de schitterende toren van de Sint-Maartenskathedraal, waarvan het carillon tot onze grote verrassing La Marseillaise liet horen bij ons eerste bezoek. Deze serenade benadrukte de slagvaardigheid en het initiatief van de vierde stad van Nederland, die bij ons bekend stond om het feit dat hij zo weinig bekend was geheel ten onrechte. De fiets is onmisbaar voor de Nederlandse jongeren, die dagelijks naar de grootste universiteit van het land fietsen. Utrecht wijdt al zijn energie en enthousiasme aan een toekomst waarin de fiets centraal staat. Wij volgen dezelfde koers. Deze hoop op een nog grotere plek voor de fiets vormt een raakvlak tussen ons, een gemeenschappelijke taal waarvan de boodschap overtuigend is. De ontmoeting in juli 2015 plaatst Utrecht in het hart van deze beweging! Utrecht: cycling in its heart Utrecht is a city that knows how to patiently cultivate its aesthetic appeal. We received the first application letter from the city to host a Grand Start of the Tour de France in Consequently, they had to wait more than ten years for this project to come to fruition. A project desired throughout its development, postponed several times, but whose principle was never called into question, on one side like the other, because Le Tour recognised straight away that the City of Utrecht was an ally in the major cause of promoting cycling. Still more than elsewhere in the Netherlands, the bicycle is king. As proof, an impressive garage with a capacity of more than 20,000 bikes will be built near the station. For cycling enthusiasts like ourselves, such a building will rival with the Dom, the sumptuous tower of the Saint Martin Cathedral whose bells rang out the French national anthem on our first visit, to our great surprise. This serenade underlined the spirit of aptness and initiative of the country s fourth biggest city, already renowned for being unjustly unsung! Unavoidable for young Dutch people, who cycle every day to the biggest university in the country, Utrecht is pouring its energy and enthusiasm into a future devoted to cycling. We are evidently both pedalling in the same direction The union of all these cycling hopes forms a shared and evident discourse, whose message will be a convincing one. The Grand Start in July 2015 will place Utrecht at the heart of this movement. 2

5 Apetrots Met welk woord druk je als burgemeester je gevoel uit bij een Tourstart in je eigen stad? Apetrots komt er het dichtste bij. Een grand départ is als een droom die uitkomt - overigens wel een droom die ik helder voor me zie (en hoor!). Het peloton boordevol toprenners, met daarachter de hele karavaan van auto s en motoren. Bekend van tv maar nu live te zien in onze eigen straten. Straten vol enthousiast publiek, zelf bijna allemaal dagelijkse fietsers. Als Utrechters bieden we geen cols van de eerste categorie. Wel beschikken we, met onze fiets- en wielertradities, over een eersteklas parcours, waarop de strijd zelfs voor de beste renners moeilijk zal zijn te winnen. In en rond een stad die met mij apetrots mag zijn op dit supersportevenement. Velen in stad en regio droegen tot de komst van de Tour bij, zodat het een feestje wordt van iedereen. Tegen het decor van ons eigen Utrecht, een stad die - met zijn wortels in Romeinse tijd en middeleeuwen - al lang geleden zijn eerste etappes heeft afgelegd. Met nog altijd een historische binnenstad en duizenden monumenten. Maar ook een stad waar jong en oud met plezier wonen, studeren en werken, een stad vol sociaal-economische, wetenschappelijke en culturele dynamiek. Met de grootste uitbreidingslocatie van Nederland, Leidsche Rijn, binnen zijn grenzen. Een stad in ontwikkeling die naar elke nieuwe etappe in die ontwikkeling reikhalzend uitkijkt. Ik hoop dat wij ter ere van de Tourstart 2015 vele liefhebbers van Frankrijk, de sport en het wielrennen in onze stad welkom mogen heten. En ik wens alle, ik herhaal ALLE betrokkenen een mooie en spannende koers toe! Proud What word conveys best your feelings as Mayor when the Tour is due to start in your city? I think proud comes closest. A Grand Start is like a dream coming true a dream that I can clearly envision (and hear!). The peloton packed with the best riders in the world, followed by the convoy of cars and motorbikes. What we know so well from TV will now be live on our own streets. Streets filled with enthusiastic crowds, most of whom ride a bike every day. As Utrechters, we can t offer first-category mountain passes. We do however have a first-class stage, thanks to our bicycle and cycling traditions, which will be difficult to win even for the best riders. This will all happen in and around our city. All our inhabitants can join me in feeling very proud about hosting this sporting event here. Many in this city and region contributed to the coming of the Tour, making this a festivity for everyone. Against the backdrop of our Utrecht, a city with Roman and medieval roots which accomplished its first stages a long time ago, with its historic inner city and thousands of monuments. But it is also a city where young and old live with pleasure, study and work, a city full of socio-economic, scientific and cultural dynamics. The biggest expansion site, Leidsche Rijn, lies within its borders. A city in development which looks forward to every new stage with excitement. I hope that we get to welcome many lovers of France, sports and cycling to our city on the occasion of the start of the 2015 Tour. De wielrenners volgen een vlak parcours dat dwars door de stad van west naar oost loopt en vice versa. Het startschavot wordt geïnstalleerd voor de Jaarbeurs Utrecht, waar tevens de ontvangstruimte en het perscentrum worden ingericht. De wielrenners zetten eerst koers naar het Stadion Galgenwaard, het voetbalstadion van FC Utrecht. Vandaar gaan ze naar het Utrecht Science Park, Universiteit Utrecht, om vervolgens weer naar het westen af te buigen. Daarna rijden ze via het historische centrum en de Maliesingel naar het Spoorwegmuseum om tenslotte bij het Centraal Station van Utrecht te finishen. The Tour de France 2015 will start with a 13.7 kilometre time-trial. The riders will tackle a circuit of which entire route will cross the city from west to east and back again on flat terrain. The starting ramp will be set up in front of the Jaarbeurs Utrecht Trade Centre, which will also play host to the reception facilities and press centre. The race will first head to the Stadion Galgenwaard, the football stadium that is home to FC Utrecht. From there, after a detour to the north, the route will head to the Utrecht Science Park, the university, before turning west again. It will go past the historical centre and Maliesingel before passing in front of the railway museum and reaching the finish next to Utrecht central station. 7

Het peloton rijdt vervolgens door de straten van de oude binnenstad en langs de grachten onder de bogen van de Dom door, de toren van de Sint-Maartenskathedraal. Daarna volgt de Maliebaan met het huis waar in 1883 de Nederlandsche Vélocipèdisten-Bond werd opgericht, de eerste wielrennersclub van Nederland. De daadwerkelijke startlocatie bevindt zich op t Goylaan, vanwaar het parcours een lus rondom het noorden van de stad maakt. Na twintig kilometer te hebben gereden door Leidsche Rijn, de nieuwe wijk aan de westkant van de stad, zet de Tour koers richting Once again, the Jaarbeurs Utrecht Trade Centre will play host to the start of the second stage. The pack will then parade down the streets of the old quarters and alongside the canals before passing under the arcades of the Dom, the tower of the Saint Martin Cathedral. Afterwards, it will head to the Maliebaan promenade and pass in front of the house which witnessed the founding, in 1883, of the Nederlandse Vélocipèdisten Bond, the first cycling club in the Netherlands. The actual start will take place on the t Goylaan and, after a loop to the north of the city followed by twenty kilometres through Leidsche Rijn, the new district of west Utrecht, the Tour de France will head towards... 12 Nederland en de Tour de France Zesde Grand Départ, een record De Grand Départ van de Tour de France 2015 in Utrecht wordt de zesde die in Nederland plaatsvindt, wat een record is voor een land buiten Frankrijk. Het was overigens ook in Nederland dat de Tour voor de eerste keer buiten de Franse landsgrenzen van start ging. Dat was in 1954 in Amsterdam, de hoofdstad van Nederland, gevolgd door Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978), s-hertogenbosch (1996) en Rotterdam (2010). Negen etappesteden Utrecht wordt de negende stad van Nederland die de Tour de France host. Bij de Nederlandse steden van de Grand Départ komen namelijk nog Maastricht in 1969, Sint Willebrord in 1978 en Valkenburg in 1992 en Twee Gele Truien in Parijs Hij was in 1968 de eerste Nederlander, maar ook de eerste wielrenner met een bril die de Tour won. Aan het eind van de laatste etappe, een tijdrit tussen Melun en Parijs, wist Jan Janssen met een verschil van slechts 38 seconden de Belg Herman van Springel te kloppen. Twaalf jaar later, in 1980, was het de beurt aan Joop Zoetemelk om de hoogste trede van het podium op de Champs-Élysées te beklimmen. Na vijfmaal op de tweede plaats te zijn geëindigd, werd hij bij zijn tiende poging eindelijk beloond voor zijn volharding. Eervolle vermelding Hij heette Theofiel Middelkamp en was de eerste Nederlandse wielrenner die een etappe van de Tour de France won. Toch had hij nog nooit een berg gezien voordat hij in 1936 de leiding nam in de etappe Aix-les-Bains > Grenoble die over de Galibier-pas liep. In totaal, inclusief de ploegentijdritten, telt Nederland 167 etappeoverwinningen, de laatste op naam van Pieter Weening in Jan Janssen

13 Joop Zoetemelk Sixth Grand Start: a record The Grand Start of the Tour de France in Utrecht in 2015 will be the sixth to have taken place in the Netherlands, which is a record for starts outside the borders of France. Furthermore, it was in the Netherlands that the Tour de France started abroad for the first time. The year was 1954, the venue Amsterdam, the Dutch capital. It was followed later by Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978), s-hertogenbosch (1996) and Rotterdam (2010).
