1 NEWSLETTER # 1 For English please scroll down Barok bos De Oude Warande bleek in 2000 uiterst geschikt voor de presentatie van hedendaagse sculptuur. Sindsdien transformeert Fundament dit park iedere drie tot vier jaar tot podium voor Lustwarande. Deze internationale expositie, die een stand van zaken toont van de ontwikkelingen in de sculptuur, is gratis toegankelijk en trekt een groeiend aantal bezoekers, met een record van meer dan in Aan Lustwarande `11 Raw nemen 30 kunstenaars uit diverse landen deel, van wie het merendeel zelden of nooit eerder in Nederland geëxposeerd heeft. Naast paviljoen Grotto van Callum Morton (2009) telt Raw een solo en 28 andere werken, waaronder sculpturen, performances en actions. Van deze 28 werken zijn er 20 nieuw. Over de 3 e editie in 2008 schreef de pers: Two sculpture exhibitions in Dutch parks last summer translated their intellectual programs into compelling visual encounters, providing interest for the eyes and provocation for the mind. Sonsbeek 2008, in Arnhem. while Lustwarande 08, in Tilburg, focused on two current interests in sculpture: the grotesque and the ephemeral. Both were broadly appealing without reduction to superficiality. Art in America Dankzij een uitstekend internationaal netwerk, grote bevlogenheid en het geloof in de kunstenaars slaagt Fundament er keer op keer in om belangwekkende namen te trekken voor een openluchttentoonstelling die tot de beste van Nederland behoort. NRC Handelsblad Mysterie met een haast bovennatuurlijk aura, waar je niet anders dan naartoe getrokken wordt. En dat geldt vrijwel voor alle beelden. Curator Chris Driessen pikt trends in de hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst mooi op om er een eigen draai aan te geven. Het Financieele Dagblad Lustwarande is een uitzondering. De Volkskrant De Oude Warande De Oude Warande werd in 1712 aangelegd door de Duitse prins Wilhelm Von Hessen-Kassel (Wilhelm VIII), die op dat moment heer van de heerlijkheid Tilburg en Goirle was. Hij liet De Oude Warande aanleggen volgens de laatste tuinmode, de Barok. Warande is afgeleid van het Franse varenne, wat jacht- of lustbos betekent. Het hoofdontwerp is een sterrenbos, terwijl de paden van de vier kwadranten aangelegd zijn in verschillende geometrische vormen, waardoor het padenstelsel een

2 doolhof vormt. Dergelijke parken werden gewoonlijk verlevendigd met sculpturen, grotten en vijvers. In De Oude Warande zijn geen overblijfselen van beelden gevonden. Wilhelm VIII werd kort na de voltooiing van het bos gouverneur van Maastricht. Gedurende de 19e eeuw wisselde de Warande enkele malen van eigenaar. In 1952 werd de gemeente Tilburg eigenaar van De Oude Warande. Sinds 1989 wordt het originele ontwerp gerestaureerd. Deze restauratie zal rond 2020 gereed zijn. Lustwarande Kunstenaars die participeerden in de eerste drie edities waren onder anderen David Altmejd, David Bade, Mirosław Bałka Rob Birza, Louise Bourgeois, Cai Guo Qiang, Tom Claassen, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Wim Delvoye, Do-Ho Suh, Elmgreen & Dragset, Jan Fabre, Luciano Fabro, Fortuyn/O Brien, Guido Geelen, Jeppe Hein, Ugo Rondinone, Anish Kapoor, Lee Bul, Paul McCarthy, Jonathan Meese, Ernesto Neto, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Maria Roosen en Franz West. Grotto en Stardust In 2007 verleende Fundament Callum Morton de opdracht om een paviljoen voor De Oude Warande te ontwerpen. Dit paviljoen, Grotto, werd in 2009 opgeleverd, ter gelegenheid waarvan de expositie Stardust plaatsvond, waaraan onder anderen Jedediah Caesar, Björn Dahlem, Dan Graham, Job Koelewijn, Terence Koh, Germaine Kruip, Rona Pondick en Maria Roosen deelnamen. De 4 e editie: Lustwarande 11 Raw De eerste editie van Lustwarande, Lustwarande/Pleasure-Garden (2000) werd opgezet als een refurbishment, een hedendaagse voltooiing van het 18e eeuwse Barokke lustbos De Oude Warande, dat nooit voorzien werd van Barokke beelden, fonteinen, een grotto of bedriegertjes. In feite echter waren de eigentijdse beeldtoevoegingen luizen in de pels van het Barokke parkontwerp, hedendaagse interpretaties van Barokke noties, die door het verloop van de geschiedenis niet konden zijn wat ze, binnen de thematiek van de expositie, voorstonden. Het waren vlekken op het patroon van het oude kleed. Lustwarande 11 Raw stelt deze displacement expliciet voorop door recente kunst te tonen die niet in relatie staat tot het natuurlijke karakter van De Oude Warande. Raw is puur en verwijst alleen naar zichzelf. Het hervatten, het herbezien, de retrospectie en het herijken, mag momenteel de meest opmerkelijke karakteristiek in de hedendaagse kunst genoemd worden. De vraag over authenticiteit is passé. Enkele decennia geleden nog relatief onderkende kunstvormen als video, fotografie en digitale kunst zijn al geruime tijd established. Relational Esthetics vormde bijna tien jaar lang het nieuwe toverwoord, maar intussen is ook deze expliciet sociaal geëngageerde kunst gearriveerd. Schilder- en tekenkunst, op doek en expanded, de sculptuur in de ruimste zin van het woord, inclusief installaties, de relatie met architectuur en herbezinningen op het begrip monument, en de performance hebben opnieuw voor het voetlicht gestaan of staan dat nog steeds. Post-Modernisme is voorbij en heeft plaats gemaakt voor een bewustwording van de mondiale beeldende kunstpraktijk, waarin identiteit, globalisering en de Noord-Zuid verhoudingen de belangrijkste thema s zijn. Maar na het eerste decennium in de 21ste eeuw is deze thematiek ook beslist niet nieuw meer. Naast tendentieuze verkenningen van het Aziatische, met name Chinese en Indiase, en Afrikaanse beeldende kunstfront, staan Minimal Art en Conceptual Art, als ook de rol van woman artists en de Zuid-Amerikaanse avant-garde met zijn hedendaagse representanten, sinds enkele jaren in retrospectieve belangstelling en bepalen mede het veelzijdige aanzien van de hedendaagse kunst. Intussen herijkt de kunstgeschiedenis haar (Westerse) canons. Lustwarande 11 - Raw vat deze tijdsgeest van pluriformiteit in de beeldende kunst op, kijkt naar het heden en terug en laat hedendaagse sculptuur in al zijn puurheid zien. Veelzijdigheid, met duidelijk herkenbare tendensen uit de 20e eeuw in werken van navolgers, en ook toevoeging van time based vormen van kunst zullen de grondtoon vormen van Raw. Deze kunst verwijst naar niets anders dan naar zichzelf en naar haar voorgangers en is daarom zowel autonoom als referentieel (referential autonomous work). Naast schijnbaar ruwe montage, rauwe materialen en rauwe figuratie, hedendaagse inspiraties van assemblage, Existentialistische Figuratie en Arte Povera, toont Raw strak geometrische en meer gepolijste werken die vooral voortvloeien uit de verworvenheden van Constructivisme en Minimal Art. De Oude Warande met zijn Barokke padenpatroon vormt het podium voor recente kunst die echo s oproept uit de vorige eeuw, met kunst ook die in weinig opzicht meer doet denken aan de tijd waarin het Barokke kleed geweven werd, maar die er doorheen de tijd onlosmakelijk mee verbonden is. Aan Lustwarande 11 Raw nemen dertig beeldend kunstenaars deel, van wie het merendeel zelden of nooit eerder in Nederland geëxposeerd heeft. Evenals in 2004 en 2008 zal Museum De Pont fungeren als extra locatie, waar, tegelijk met een solo van Anish Kapoor, werk van de Belgische

3 kunstenaar Peter Buggenhout getoond wordt. Naast deze solo zal ook paviljoen Grotto van Callum Morton (2009) een prominente rol innemen. Van de overige 28 werken (sculpturen, performances en actions) zijn er 20 nieuw, merendeels door Fundament geproduceerd. De kwaliteit en het belang van Lustwarande in het algemeen en de editie van 2011 in het bijzonder wordt erkend door de Britse Henry Moore Foundation, die Lustwarande 11 op voorhand honoreerde vanwege de rol die Fundament speelt in de internationale ontwikkelingen binnen de hedendaagse sculptuur. Een dergelijke bijdrage wordt zelden aan buitenlandse instellingen toegekend. Deze honorering geldt als een internationaal keurmerk. Lustwarande 11 Raw wordt financieel ondersteund door o.a. de Mondriaan Stichting, Provincie Noord-Brabant, gemeente Tilburg, Tilburg Textiles, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, SNS Reaal Fonds, VSB Fonds, Henry Moore Foundation, BKKC, Ministerie van de Vlaamsche Gemeenschap, Pro Helvetia en Institut Français des Pays-Bas. 4 ENGLISH Every four years since 2000, Baroque woodlands De Oude Warande in Tilburg, the Netherlands, have formed the backdrop for the international exhibition Lustwarande, in which Fundament Foundation presents a state of the art of international developments in contemporary sculpture. The third edition in 2008 attracted over 100,000 visitors. Thirty artists from various countries will participate in Lustwarande `11 Raw, the majority of which has rarely or never earlier exhibited in The Netherlands. Besides pavilion Grotto by Callum Morton (2009), Raw consists of a solo and 28 other works (sculptures, performances and actions), of which 20 are new. Art in America Due to an outstanding international network, great inspiration and belief in the artists, Fundament Foundation succeeds time and again in attracting interesting names for an outdoors exhibition which ranks among the top in the Netherlands. NRC Handelsblad Mystery with an almost supernatural aura, to which you are compellingly drawn. And that applies to practically all pieces. Curator Chris Driessen effortlessly picks up trends in contemporary sculpture with a personal twist. Het Financiele Dagblad Lustwarande is exceptional. De Volkskrant De Oude Warande De Oude Warande was commissioned in 1712 by the German prince Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel (Wilhelm VIII), who was at that time lord of Tilburg and Goirle. He had De Oude Warande designed after the latest garden fashion, Baroque. Warande stems from the French word varenne, which means hunting- or pleasure-garden. The basis of the design is a star-shaped forest, with the paths in each of the four quadrants laid out in four different geometric forms, creating a maze. Pleasure gardens of this kind were usually adorned with sculptures of mythological figures, grottos, fountains and ponds. No source has been found documenting such decoration at De Oude Warande. Soon after

5 the landscaping of De Oude Warande, The park changed hands several times before becoming the property of Tilburg city council in the 1950s. A gradual restoration of the wood started in the 1990s, which should be completed in around Lustwarande Among the artists who participated in the first three editions were David Altmejd, Mirosław Bałka, Louise Bourgeois, Cai Guo Qiang, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Wim Delvoye, Do-Ho Suh, Elmgreen & Dragset, Jan Fabre, Luciano Fabro, Brian Griffiths, Jeppe Hein, Ugo Rondinone, Anish Kapoor, Lee Bul, Paul McCarthy, Jonathan Meese, Ernesto Neto, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Franz West. Grotto and Stardust In 2007 Fundament Foundation commissioned Callum Morton to design a pavilion for De Oude Warande. Grotto was realised in 2009, on the occasion of which Stardust took place, with works by Jedediah Caesar, Björn Dahlem, Dan Graham, Terence Koh, Rona Pondick and Maria Roosen among others. The 4 th edition: Lustwarande 11 Raw The first edition of Lustwarande, Lustwarande/Pleasure Garden (2000), was conceived as a refurbishment, a modern-day completion of De Oude Warande, an 18 th -century Baroque pleasure garden, which was never equipped with the usual Baroque statues, fountains, grottos and follies. However, the contemporary sculptural additions to the landscape of the park functioned as disruptive elements within the Baroque garden design, modern interpretations of Baroque notions; the passing of time meant they could not be what they claimed to be within the thematic framework of the exhibition. They were stains, blemishes, on the pattern of the old cloth. Lustwarande 11 Raw explicitly focuses on this disruptive quality by showing recent developments in sculpture that bear no relation to the natural character of the venue. Raw is pure and autonomous and only refers to sculpture itself. Resuming, reviewing, retrospection and re-evaluation may be seen as the most striking characteristics of contemporary art today. The question of authenticity is passé. Practices that were relatively under-acknowledged just a few decades ago, such as video and photography and, more recently, digitally produced art (including web art), have for some time now been established forms of art. Relational aesthetics was the new buzzword for about ten years, but this art too, with its explicit social engagement, has now become more mainstream. Painting and drawing, on canvas, but also in expanded forms, sculpture in the broadest sense of the word, including installations, the relationship with architecture and reconsiderations of the concept of the monument, and the performance as art form have all once again enjoyed a place in the spotlight, and continue to do so. Post-Modernism is over and has given way to an awareness of artistic practice worldwide, with the most important themes being identity, globalisation and relationships between north and south. But at the end of the first decade of the 21 st century this theme is far from new. For some years, retrospective subjects of interest have included Minimal Art and Conceptual Art, as well as tendentious investigations of Asian, particularly Chinese and Indian, and African visual arts, and also the role of women artists and the Japanese and South-American avant-garde and their contemporary representatives. These elements have all played a part in shaping the multifaceted nature of contemporary art. Art history continues to re-evaluate its Western canons. Raw captures this zeitgeist of pluriformity in the visual arts, looking at the present day and the past. Variety and versatility, with a focus on clearly identifiable trends from the 20 th century in works by followers and imitators, will set the tone for Raw, along with the addition of time-based forms of art. This art only refers to itself and its predecessors and is therefore both autonomous and referential (Referential Autonomous Work). Next to seemingly rough montage, raw materials and raw figuration, contemporary inspirations of assemblage, Existentialist Figuration and Arte Povera, Raw will present strictly geometrical and more polished works of art, that are rooted in the heritage of Constructivism and Minimal Art. De Oude Warande with its Baroque design is the stage for recent developments in sculpture that evoke echos from the past century, that are reminiscent in only a few respects of the time when the cloth was woven, but which over the years have become inextricably bound up within that cloth. Thirty artists will take part in Raw, the majority of which has seldomly or never earlier exhibited in The Netherlands. Even as was the case with previous editions of Lustwarande, Museum De Pont will be an additional venue, where, next to a solo by Anish Kapoor, work by Belgium artist Peter Buggenhout will be on view. Besides this solo, pavilion Grotto by Callum Morton (2009) will play a prominent role in

6 Raw. Of the 28 remaining works (sculptures, performances and actions) 20 are new and for the most part produced by Fundament Foundation. The quality and relevance of Lustwarande in general and of the fourth edition in particular is acknowledged by the British Henry Moore Foundation, that has rewarded Lustwarande 11 Raw with a grant, because of the role Fundament Foundation plays within the international developments in contemporary sculpture. Such a grant is rarely rewarded to a non-british institution. This reward ranks as an international hallmark.
