Von Bülow noticed and admired Richard s talent and commissioned the young composer to write this work. He also invited Strauss to conduct his composition during its premiere in Munich. This launched Strauss career as a conductor: soon after the performance, Von Bülow invited him to join his orchestra in Meiningen as his assistant. After completing the first two movements, Strauss realised that his patron had expected the work to have a more Baroque style than the movements actually did. He changed the name of the first movement to Praeludium (a commonly used word for prelude from the Baroque era) and hoped that this would be enough to satisfy von Bülow. The second movement remained a Romanze (not really a Baroque title), but the Gavotte and the Introduction and Fugue were emphatically written to the background of his patron s wishes. A Gavotte is a rapid dance. The fugue is a technique in which a subject is played by all the voices in changing musical environments, regularly interrupted by interludes or episodes. The fugue was a much-loved technique in the Baroque era. The budding composer did not feel restricted by these wishes: a talent can always turn restrictions to his advantage, and Strauss certainly managed to do that with this Suite.

3 Paul Hindemith Kammermusik Pieter Jansen Conductor In the early twenties, Hindemith was a violist and leader of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra. His three short one-act operas gained him instant fame in those days and he remained the most significant German composer until political developments forced him to leave Germany in the thirties. Early on in his development, Hindemith already saw the endless possibilities of shaping musical connections in polyphonic techniques and strict structures. He found many connections to this in the great works from the Baroque era. This inspiration is clearly recognisable in the Kammermusik series, written between 1921 and Here, the term chamber music is used for a series of compositions which demonstrate orchestral composing for small ensembles. Naturally, Hindemith chose to create a contrast with the large orchestras of his time, required for the works of Mahler and Strauss. Apart from the first two, the seven other Kammermusiken are in effect concertos for a soloist with a small ensemble (piano, cello, violin, viola, viola d amore and organ). The first is a work for flute, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, accordion, piano, string quintet and percussion. At the time, the accordion was a highly unusual instrument for chamber music. The addition of 1921 to the last movement is a reference to the founding year of the festival for modern music in Donaueschingen, which later became very famous. Pieter Jansen has been a lecturer of wind and brass band conducting and percussion at the Maastricht Academy of Music since He studied percussion, piano, and wind and brass band conducting at the Maastricht Academy of Music. In 1978 he became principal percussionist with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra. He was appointed principal conductor of the Royal Netherlands Military Band in 1996, principal conductor of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy in 2001 and Inspector of Military Music for the Dutch Armed Forces from 2008 to As a conductor, he has worked all over the world and recorded numerous CDs. He has been a guest conductor with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, the Brabants Orkest, and various military orchestras abroad. He has been hugely important for wind music in Limburg. He won national titles as a conductor with Harmonie St. Aemiliaan Bleijerheide, the Koninklijke Philharmonie Bocholtz and Harmonie Concordia Treebeek. In addition to his work at the Maastricht Academy of Music, Pieter Jansen is currently a valued jury member, both nationally and internationally, and travels abroad regularly to teach courses and masterclasses for conductors.

4 nederlands Richard Strauss Suite für 13 Blasinstrumente De vader van Richard Strauss, zelf musicus, verkeerde in kringen met veel grote musici van zijn tijd, waaronder Hans von Bülow. Deze zag en bewonderde het talent van Richard en gaf de jonge componist de opdracht voor het componeren van dit werk. Tevens nodigde hij Strauss uit zijn compositie te dirigeren tijdens de première in München. Dit was tevens de start van Strauss carrière als dirigent: aansluitend aan deze uitvoering nodigde Von Bülow hem uit als assistent naar zijn orkest in Meiningen. Na het componeren van de eerste twee delen realiseerde Strauss zich dat de opdrachtgever het werk meer in een Barokke stijl gedacht had dan deze delen bleken te zijn. Hij veranderde de naam van het eerste deel in Praeludium (een veelgebruikt woord voor voorspel uit de Barokperiode) en hoopte daarmee weg te komen bij Bülow. Het tweede deel bleef definitief een Romanze (niet echt een Baroktitel), maar de Gavotte en de Introduktion und Fuge zijn nadrukkelijk geschreven met de wens van de opdrachtgever op de achtergrond. Een Gavotte is een snelle dans. De fuga is een techniek waarin een gegeven door alle stemmen wordt gespeeld in wissellende muzikale omgevingen, die regelmatig worden onderbroken door tussenspelen. De fuga was een zeer geliefde techniek in de Barok. Paul Hindemith Kammermusik In het begin van de jaren twintig was Hindemith concertmeester altviool in het operaorkest van Frankfurt. Zijn korte drie een-acte opera s maakten hem in die tijd zeer snel beroemd en hij bleef de belangrijkste componist in Duitsland, totdat politieke ontwikkelingen hem dwongen Duitsland in de jaren dertig te verlaten. Hindemith zag al vroeg in zijn ontwikkeling de vele mogelijkheden muzikale verbanden in meerstemmige technieken en strenge structuren vorm te geven. Heel veel aansluiting daarbij vond hij in grote werken uit de Barok. Deze inspiratie is goed waar te nemen in de serie Kammermusik geschreven tussen 1921 en De term kamermuziek wordt hier gebruikt voor een serie composities, die in kleine bezettingen een orkestrale componeerwijze laten zien. Uiteraard koos Hindemith hier voor een contrast met de grote orkesten van zijn tijd, die verlangd werden in de werken van Mahler en Strauss. Behalve de eerste twee, zijn de overige zeven Kammermusiken in feite concerten voor een solist met een kleine bezetting (piano, cello, viool, viola, viola d amore en orgel). Het eerste is een werk voor fluit, klarinet, fagot, trompet, accordeon, piano, strijkkwintet en slagwerk. De accordeon was in die tijd zeker ongebruikelijk als kamermuziekinstrument. Pieter Jansen Dirigent Pieter Jansen is sinds 1985 docent directie Hafa en slagwerk aan Conservatorium Maastricht. Hij studeerde slagwerk, piano en harmonie- en fanfaredirectie aan Conservatorium Maastricht. In 1978 werd hij eerste slagwerker bij het Limburgs Symfonie Orkest, in 1996 werd hij chef-dirigent van de Koninklijke Militaire Kapel, in 2001 chef-dirigent van de Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine en van 2008 tot 2012 Inspecteur Militaire Muziek voor de Krijgsmacht. Als dirigent werkte hij over de hele wereld en maakte hij tal van cd s. Daarnaast was onder andere gastdirigent bij het Limburgs Symfonie Orkest, het Brabants Orkest en diverse buitenlandse militaire orkesten. Voor de blaasmuziek in Limburg is hij van grote betekenis geweest. Hij behaalde als dirigent landstitels met Harmonie St. Aemiliaan Bleijerheide, de Koninklijke Philharmonie van Bocholtz en Harmonie Concordia Treebeek. Op dit moment is Pieter Jansen naast zijn werkzaamheden aan Conservatorium Maastricht, zowel nationaal als internationaal een gewaardeerd jurylid en houdt hij zich vooral in het buitenland bezig met het geven van cursussen en Masterclasses voor dirigenten. Samenwerking Conservatorium Maastricht werkt met vele partners samen in projecten en masterclasses, maar ook in internationale uitwisselingen van docenten en studenten. Eén van deze projecten is het jaarlijks terugkerend kamermuziekproject met de studenten uit de gezamenlijke Masteropleiding Master of Music van alliantie Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Fontys Zuyd van het Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg en het Conservatorium Maastricht van Zuyd Hogeschool. Het onderwijsprogramma van deze opleiding kent twee lesplaatsen en gezamenlijke lessen zijn over de twee steden verdeeld. De voorbereiding van dit project is een intensieve repetitieperiode die jaarlijks in de een van beide lesplaatsen (Tilburg of Maastricht) wordt georganiseerd. De keuze van de dirigent wordt in goed onderling overleg bepaald. Het programma wordt vastgesteld in overleg met de dirigent. Leidend in deze keuzes zijn een dirigent van formaat te vinden, die tevens graag met studenten werkt. Het programma moet veel van de musici eisen in individueel spel en vooral in samenspel, muzikaal interessante muziek zijn en te realiseren in de periode die voor de voorbereiding is voorzien. Vanwege het sterk beroepsauthentieke karakter van dit gezamenlijk kamermuziekproject is het een belangrijke schakel in de artistieke en vaktechnische ontwikkeling van de jonge musicus. De jonge toondichter wist zich door deze wensen niet beperkt: een talent weet altijd uit beperkingen een voordeel te behalen en dat is Strauss in deze Suite wonderwel gelukt. De toevoeging 1921 aan het laatste deel is een opdracht aan het stichtingsjaar van het later zeer beroemde festival voor moderne muziek in Donaueschingen.

One of these projects is the annual chamber music project with the students of the joint Master s programme Master of Music of the alliance University for the Arts Fontys and Zuyd of the Fontys Conservatory in Tilburg and the Maastricht Academy of Music of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. This degree programme has two locations, and joint lessons are divided between the two cities. Preparations for this project are made during an intensive rehearsal period which is organised annually at one of the two locations (Tilburg or Maastricht). The conductor is chosen in mutual consultation. The programme is compiled in consultation with the conductor. The main focus when making these choices is on finding a conductor of stature who also likes working with students. The programme should make great demands on the musicians individual performance, but particularly on their ensemble performance, be musically interes - ting and feasible within the scheduled preparation period. Because of the great professional authenticity of this joint chamber music project, it is an important step in the artistic and technical development of these young musicians.
