2 Beste Biënnale-bezoeker, Dear Biennale visitor, amsterdamse cellobiënnale Zelfs de grootste liefhebbers van de Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale hebben hun hart vast gehouden of het in deze financieel moeilijke tijden nog wel mogelijk zou zijn een festival van die omvang te realiseren. Maar de Biënnale 2010 is er. En hoe! Met de muziek voor cello-ensembles als rode draad door de programmering is de Biënnale 2010 nog omvangrijker en internationaler dan de vorige edities. De spelers komen uit Berlijn, New York en Parijs, maar ook uit Peking en Riga. Daarom willen we allereerst onze grote dank en waardering uitspreken voor de sponsors, culturele fondsen, begunstigers en vrienden die het opnieuw mogelijk hebben gemaakt onze (en wellicht ook uw) droombiënnale te realiseren. Dit Festivalboek biedt u een overzicht van alle concerten en evenementen met samenvattende beschrijvingen. Elke dag verschijnt er ook een Dagprogramma dat u verder loodst door het bonte spektakel dat Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale heet. Soloconcerten met orkest, recitals, de traditionele Bach-suites om half 10 s morgens dit keer met ontbijt vanaf 8.45 uur maar ook AirCello, RagaCello, een Open Podium, de Popper Estafette, Masterclasses; u zult oren en ogen, handen en voeten te kort komen om alles bij te wonen. Nieuwe Muziek blijft een speerpunt van de Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale. Vijftien wereldpremières en veel avontuurlijk repertoire horen dan ook thuis in het Muziekgebouw aan t IJ. Er zijn kinder- en kleuterconcerten en honderdveertig jonge kinderen spelen zelf in het Mega Kinder Cello Orkest (MegaKCO). Young Professionals zijn te horen in de Masterclasses van befaamde pedagogen uit de hele wereld. De grote hoeveelheid aanmeldingen voor zowel het MKCO als het Nationaal Cello Concours toont dat het enthousiasme voor de cello ook bij de jeugd springlevend is. De Biënnale verenigt solisten van alle generaties, cello-scholen en landen. De veelgeroemde sfeer wordt nog bevorderd door de aanwezigheid van cellobouwers sommigen met een tijdelijke werkplaats stands met bijzondere cellomuziek en boeken en een eigen plek voor Radio 4. Na de avondconcerten zal een geheel eigen sfeer te voelen zijn in de tot lounge-room omgetoverde BAM Zaal. Souperen in ons nachtrestaurant op de begane grond is een heel andere mogelijkheid. Wij wensen u veel mooie momenten toe tijdens de derde Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale! Maarten Mostert artistiek leider Johan Dorrestein zakelijk leider Even the Amsterdam Cello Biennale s most fanatical devotees endured doubts as to whether a festival of such dimensions could still be realised in these troubled financial times. However, the 2010 Biennale has indeed arrived and how! With music for cello ensembles as the main theme of the programming, the 2010 Biennale is even more extensive and internationally oriented than the previous editions. The players come from afar: Berlin, New York and Paris, even Beijing and Riga. So first of all we would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation towards the sponsors, cultural funds, patrons and friends who have once again enabled us to realise our (and maybe also your) dream Biennale. This Festival booklet provides an overview of all concerts and events with descriptive summaries. A Daily Programme will also be available each day to help guide you through the colourful spectacle known as the Amsterdam Cello Biennale. Solo concertos with orchestra, recitals, the traditional Bach suites at half-past-nine in the mornings this time including breakfast from 8.45 a.m. but also AirCello, RagaCello, an Open Stage, the Popper Relay, Masterclasses; you will lack sufficient ears, eyes, hands and feet to experience it all. New Music remains a spearhead of the Amsterdam Cello Biennale. Fifteen world premières and a great deal of adventurous repertoire will thus be given their deserved place in the Muziekgebouw aan t IJ. There are concerts for children and toddlers, while a hundred and forty young children will play in the Mega Children s Cello Orchestra (MegaKCO). Young Professionals can be heard in the Masterclasses of celebrated pedagogues from throughout the world. The large number of applications received for the MKCO and the National Cello Competition are clear proof that enthusiasm for the cello is also alive and kicking among the youth. The Biennale unites soloists of all generations, cello schools and nationalities. The celebrated atmosphere will be further enhanced by the presence of cello makers (some with a temporary workshop), stands displaying unique cello music and books, and Radio 4 on location with its own special corner. After the evening concerts you can enjoy the intimate and personal atmosphere of the BAM Zaal, transformed into a lounge room. 6 Nationaal Cello Concours Het Nationaal Cello Concours is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale. Nederlands of in Nederland studerend cellotalent kan zich in drie rondes presenteren aan een internationale jury. De inbedding van het concours in een internationaal festival blijkt vruchtbaar te zijn. Verrassend veel kandidaten hebben zich aangemeld en het lijkt erop dat het concours aan belang en populariteit wint. Bij het samenstellen van het programma is muzikale veelzijdigheid een belangrijk criterium geweest. Voor de eerste ronde konden de deelnemers kiezen tussen vier relatief bekende moderne werken voor cello-solo. Daarnaast werd speciaal voor het concours een nieuwe compositie gecreëerd door de jonge Nederlandse componist Wilbert Bulsink. Vanzelfsprekend mocht een sonate van Boccherini, met begeleiding van een cello, niet ontbreken. Gezien de grote hoeveelheid deelnemers zal een selectie gemaakt worden uit het volledige programma. De precieze programmainvulling wordt kort van te voren bekendgemaakt. De deelnemers spelen in de eerste en tweede ronde met hun eigen begeleiders of de concoursbegeleiders Flurin Cuonz (cello) en Daniël Kramer (piano). De finalisten worden op vrijdag 12 november begeleid door Amsterdam Sinfonietta en dirigent Daan Admiraal. National Cello Competition The National Cello Competition is an inseparable part of the Amsterdam Cello Biennale. Talented cellists of Dutch nationality or studying in the Netherlands have the opportunity to present themselves to an international jury in three rounds. Incorporating the competition into an international festival has proved a great enrichment. Surprisingly many candidates have applied, so it would seem that the competition is gaining in importance and popularity. Musical versatility was an important criterion in setting the programme. For the first round candidates could choose from four relatively well-known modern works for solo cello. In addition, a new work was specially composed for the competition by the young Dutch composer Wilbert Bulsink. Naturally, a Boccherini sonata with cello accompaniment is a set work. In view of the large number of candidates, not all movements of every composition can be performed. The exact programme content will be announced shortly beforehand. In the first and second rounds the candidates can make use of the official accompanists Flurin Cuonz (cello) and Daniël Kramer (piano). 9 Openingsconcert Ivan Fedele (1953) en Unsuk Chin (1961) zijn beiden present met een recent concert tijdens deze Biënnale: Fedele in dit Openingsconcert, Chin in het Galaconcert. Hoezeer ze ook van elkaar verschillen, één ding hebben beide componisten gemeen. Ze wisten allebei al vroeg de weg te vinden naar Gaudeamus, het door Walter Maas in Bilthoven opgerichte centrum voor hedendaagse muziek. Van Fedele werd in 1981 Chiari geselecteerd voor uitvoering. Vier jaar later kreeg Chin de eerste prijs voor haar compositie Spektra. De Italiaanse componist (en filosoof) oogstte vooral bewondering in vakkringen maar wist minder snel door te dringen tot een breed publiek. Een doorbraak kwam in 2007 met zijn opera Antigone, geschreven voor de Maggio Musicale in Florence. Zijn uit 2000 daterende Levante (Oosten) voor cello, strijkers en heel verrassend een cimbaal krijgt een exotisch tintje door de prominente partij voor dit Hongaarse snaarinstrument, dat bij Fedele ook als slagwerkinstrument fungeert. Opening concert Ivan Fedele (1953) and Unsuk Chin (1961) will both offer a recently composed concerto during this Biennale: Fedele in this Opening Concert, Chin in the Gala Concert. While they are very different as composers, they do share one thing in common. They both found their way early on to Gaudeamus, the centre for contemporary music founded by Walter Maas in Bilthoven. In 1981 Fedele s work Chiari was selected for performance. Four years later, Chin won first prize for her composition Spektra. The Italian composer (and philosopher) mostly won admiration in professional circles, however, it took him longer to win the appreciation of a wide public. In 2007 he experienced a breakthrough with his opera Antigone, composed for the Maggio Musicale in Florence. Fedele s Levante (East), composed in 2000 for cello, strings and most surprisingly a cimbalom, has an exotic tinge, due to the prominent role given to this Hungarian stringed instrument, which Fedele also uses as a percussion instrument. JAZZ & IMPROVISATIE PIET HEINKADE BR AMSTERDAM BOX OFFICE: De combinatie met andere werken uit Italië levert een paar prikkelende contrasten op. De originele sinfonia van Boccherini biedt veel muzikaal plezier, zoals de titel (Het huis van de duivel) al doet vermoeden. Vivaldi s Dubbelconcert in g-klein blijft een must voor cellisten die graag samen de strijd aan gaan met de barokke noten die Vivaldi zo kwistig rondstrooit. En wie het Duo Concertant (op thema s van Bellini) van Giovanni Bottesini hoort weet dat de combinatie van cello en contrabas niet alleen tot virtuoos vuurwerk, maar ook tot lachsalvo s in de zaal kan leiden. Een geval apart in dit kader is het solostuk uit 1978 van Luciano Berio. Bedoeld als hommage aan de legendarische Zwitserse mecenas Paul Sacher. Een kort recitativo (nog geen vier minuten) met de geheimzinnige titel: Les mots sont allés. (De woorden zijn verdwenen). (HH) 16 programma VRIJDAG 5 november The combination with other works from Italy results in several stimulating contrasts. Boccherini s original sinfonia is highly entertaining music, as the title (The House of the Devil) already implies. Vivaldi s Double Concerto in G minor is a definite must for cellists, who enjoy tackling the baroque notes so lavishly deployed by Vivaldi. And anyone familiar with the Duo Concertante (on themes by Bellini) by Giovanni Bottesini knows that the combination of cello and double bass not only generates virtuosic fireworks, but also waves of laughter from an appreciative audience. A unique work in this context is the 1978 solo piece by Luciano Berio, written in tribute to the legendary Swiss arts patron Paul Sacher. It is a short recitativo (under four minutes in length) with the mysterious title: Les mots sont allés (literally: the words have gone ). Ernst Reijseger en Giovanni Sollima Mega Kinder Cello Orkest Een webcast van dit concert is te zien op Niets is opwindender voor een celloamateur dan mee te spelen in één groot gonzend cello-orkest. En al helemaal als dat gebeurt onder leiding van twee beroemde cellovirtuozen: Ernst Reijseger en Giovanni Sollima. Uit heel Nederland hebben zich kinderen aangemeld: iedereen die minimaal twee jaar celloles heeft, mag meedoen. Op het podium van de Grote Zaal is net genoeg ruimte voor 140 kinderen met evenveel cello s en twee cellodirigenten. Dit Mega Orkest speelt arrangementen en composities van Reijseger en Sollima. Thuis studeerde ieder samen met zijn eigen cellodocent de muziek in. In de week voor het concert zijn er in Groningen, Maastricht, Den Haag en Amstelveen voorbereidende repetities geweest. De deelnemers uit de vier regio s hebben elkaar daar ontmoet en met Ernst Reijseger gewerkt. Vandaag komen de verschillende groepen samen en voegt Giovanni Sollima zich bij het gezelschap. Hoe dat gaat klinken?...dat is nog een verrassing! What could be more exciting for an amateur cellist than to play in a huge, resonating cello orchestra, especially one directed by two celebrated cello virtuosi: Ernst Reijseger and Giovanni Sollima. Children have applied from all over the Netherlands: anyone who has had cello lessons for a minimum of two years may participate. On the stage of the Grote Zaal is just enough room for 140 children plus their instruments and two cellist conductors. This Mega Orchestra will perform arrangements and compositions by Reijseger and Sollima. Each participant will have already studied the music at home with his or her own cello teacher. Preparatory rehearsals took place earlier in Groningen, Maastricht, The Hague and Amstelveen. The participants from these four regions met each other there and worked with Ernst Reijseger. Professional cellists and cello students have until 15 October to register to give a short performance on the Open Stage which will take place daily at 1.30 p.m. or 7 p.m. in the BAM Zaal. Cellists can perform their favourite repertoire there, from Gabrielli to Xenakis. S 14,95 AirCello Ook voor bezoekers die nooit een instrument hebben bespeeld maar in gedachten altijd meebewegen, is er de mogelijkheid om zich als cellist te uiten in de FRINGE in een miniconcertzaal die voor deze gelegenheid in het Atrium wordt opgebouwd. Naar analogie van het befaamde luchtgitaar-concept, waarbij met de handen maar zonder gitaar wordt meegespeeld met een zinderende gitaarsolo, heeft de Hongaarse cellist Örs Köszeghy (kamermuziekspeler in verschillende ensembles en cellist in Amsterdam Sinfonietta) het geavanceerde AirCello ontwikkeld. Met zijn cello staat hij onzichtbaar opgesteld, terwijl een deelnemer de gewenste muziekstemming opgeeft: melancholiek en ingetogen, of juist wild gepassioneerd à la Jacqueline du Pré. Een kleine minuut mag de deelnemer dan uiting geven aan zijn of haar favoriete cellogeluid, terwijl Köszeghy voor de daadwerkelijke muziek zorgt. Het expressieve luchtspel wordt ondertussen gefilmd door VJ illuminator Anne Gentenaar. Als meerdere deelnemers de cellorol van hun dromen hebben vervuld, worden de rollen omgedraaid: Köszeghy improviseert gepaste muziek bij de beelden die hij voor het eerst te zien krijgt, terwijl Gentenaar voor een live videomontage zorgt. Tenslotte wordt het beeld groot geprojecteerd op de wand van het Muziekgebouw aan t IJ. Zo zullen ook fietsers en treinreizigers weten dat er een cellofeestje gaande is, en krijgen de luchtcellisten eindelijk de erkenning die zij verdienen. 13 RagaCello Wie op zoek gaat naar het Indiase neefje van de cello, komt uit bij de sarangi. Het instrument wordt rechtop op schoot gezet en met een strijkstok bespeeld. Evident verschil is weliswaar het snarenaantal. Vrij vertaald staat sarangi voor honderdkleurig ; er staan 3 melodieuze snaren en 35 resonantiesnaren ter beschikking van de sarangi-speler. Maar overeenkomstig is de expressie van beide instrumenten. Een individualistische toets, een uitgesproken timbre en een sensuele flair, in de woorden van Marianne Svašek. Zij studeerde sarangi in India bij Pandit Ram Narayan en in Nederland bij Joep Bor. Sinds 1994 studeert zij bovendien bij Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar in India, waar de Dagar-familie al 19 generaties lang de belangrijkste representant is van dedhrupadstijl, de meest klassieke vorm van de Noord-Indiase muziek. Svašek studeerde cum laude af in sarangi en klassieke Indiase zang aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium. Daar geeft zij nu les en zij is er coördinator van de afdeling Indiase Muziek. Svašek is dus bij uitstek een goede gids tijdens de workshop RagaCello. In het FRINGE programma zal zij deelnemers telkens een uur lang inwijden in de Indiase muziek. Enige voorkennis is niet nodig. Svašek: U moet alleen uw cello, hart en oren meebrengen. RagaCello The Indian cousin of the cello is the sarangi: an instrument held vertically on the lap and played with a bow. Loosely translated, sarangi means hundred coloured. An obvious difference is the number of strings: the sarangi player has 3 playing strings and 35 sympathetic resonating strings at his or her disposal. However, the instruments share a similar expressive quality. An individualistic touch, a distinct timbre and a sensual flair, in the words of Marianne Svašek. She has studied the sarangi in India with Pandit Ram Narayan and in the Netherlands with Joep Bor. Since 1994 she has been studying with Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar in India, where for 19 generations the Dagar family has been the most important representative of the dhrupad style, the most classical form of North Indian music. Majoring in sarangi and classical Indian singing, Svašek graduated with honours from the Rotterdam Conservatoire, where she currently teaches. She is also the coordinator of the conservatoire s Department of Indian Music. Svašek is thus the ideal guide for the RagaCello workshop. In the FRINGE programme she will initiate participants into Indian music in one-hour sessions. No prior knowledge is necessary. Svašek: You need only bring your cello, heart and ears with you. Masterclass Natuurlijk hoort bij een uitgebreid cellofestival ook een serie masterclasses. Het lijkt een win/win situatie: jong talent wordt door een grote naam uit het veld in korte tijd op prikkelende wijze gecoacht, terwijl het publiek een kijkje krijgt in de keuken van de cellopedagogiek. Toch is niet elke masterclass vanzelfsprekend een succes. Voor de ene leerling duurt de les veel te kort, voor de ander juist veel te lang. Sommige studenten beleven een doorbraak, anderen doen vooral mee om die ene grote cellist op het CV te kunnen zetten. De aanpak verschilt bovendien. Hoe geef je als grootmeester in dat uurtje iets mee aan een leerling die reeds ver gevorderd is? Je vertelt zowel de leerling als het publiek mooie meeslepende verhalen. Of je fluistert de leerling enkele subtiele aanwijzingen toe, die zich pas na vele studie-uren uitbetalen. Ook kan de meester een willekeurige leerling gebruiken om vaste stokpaardjes te berijden. Spannend is het in elk geval bijna altijd. Dit jaar worden de masterclasses gegroepeerd in driemaal 40 minuten, om zo een groot aantal studenten aan bod te laten komen. Een indrukwekkende stoet meestercellisten staat te hunner beschikking: Natalia Gutman, Giovanni Sollima, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Raphael Wallfisch, Valter Dešpalj, Richard Aaron, Dmitry Ferschtman, Michel Strauss, Louise Hopkins, Miklós Perényi, Alban Gerhardt en Anner Bijlsma. Masterclass Naturally, any full-scale international cello festival also boasts a masterclass series. It sounds like a win-win situation: young talent receives coaching from a great name in a stimulating manner for a short period, while the public is given a look behind the scenes of cello pedagogy. However, not every masterclass automatically proves to be a success. Lessons may be too short for one student, yet too long for another. Some students experience a breakthrough, while others participate mainly in order to add an impressive name to their CV. Also, there are various approaches. As a maestro, how does one impart something of value to an already advanced student in under an hour? One could captivate both the student and public with compelling stories or whisper some subtle directions to the student, which only bear fruit after many hours of study. The maestro can also use a random student to air a pet topic. In any case, a masterclass is almost always an exciting event. This year the masterclasses will be grouped into three sessions of 40 minutes, in order to accommodate as many students as possible. Veel van de optredende solisten laten zich interviewen door de erudiete en eigenzinnige meester en geven demonstraties van hun te spelen of reeds gespeeld repertoire. Conversations with Anner Bijlsma Anner Bijlsma will discuss the state of affairs in the cello world and the current happenings of the Amsterdam Cello Biennale with cellist colleagues. Many of the soloists appearing in the Biennale will be interviewed by this erudite and strong-minded master and will give a short demonstration of the repertoire that they will perform or already have performed. Popper Estafette David Popper ( ), geboren in Praag, was rondreizend solist en eerste cellist van de Weense Staatsopera. Zijn etudes uit de Hohe Schule zitten in de vezels van iedere cellist. Naast deze etudes en vier celloconcerten schreef hij ook een groot aantal karakterstukjes, zoals de Spaanse Dansen, de Hongaarse Rhapsodie, de Gavotte, de Harlequin en de overbekende Elfentanz. In de eerste helft van de vorige eeuw hoorden deze kleine stukjes tot het grote genieten: zij mochten op geen cellorecital ontbreken. Nu is Poppers invloed alleen nog te merken in de Sonate van Debussy of op plekken in Ravel of De Falla. Behalve als dagelijkse gymnastiek voor menig cellist (Hohe Schule) wordt de muziek van Popper nog maar weinig gespeeld. Maar tijden veranderen. Popper wordt immers de Fritz Kreisler van de cello genoemd en de Biënnale heeft de presentatie van zijn muziek dan ook in de festivalsalon gesitueerd: op Foyerdeck 1, na afloop van de avondconcerten. Daar geeft een lange rij cellisten elkaar het estafettestokje door van de Eerste Amsterdamse Popper Estafette. Popper Relay David Popper ( ), born in Prague, was a travelling soloist and the principal cellist of the Vienna Staatsopera. His etudes from the Hohe Schule are etched into the fibre of every cellist s being. Besides these etudes and four cello concertos, he also wrote numerous character pieces, such as the Spanish Dances, the Hungarian Rhapsody, the Gavotte, the Harlequin and the celebrated Elfentanz. Such miniatures enjoyed universal popularity in the first half of the twentieth century and were an indispensable part of every cello recital programme. Nowadays, Popper s influence is only discernible in the Debussy Sonata or occasionally in the music of Ravel or De Falla. His works are rarely performed, although his Hohe Schule is still popular with many cellists as a daily gymnastic workout. However, the times are changing... David Popper was the Fritz Kreisler of the cello and the Biennale has accordingly chosen the festival salon as the venue for the presentation of his music: on Foyer Deck 1, after the evening concerts. 16 Beethoven In 1790 was de aartsbisschop van Keulen in Münster en hoorde daar toevallig Bernhard Romberg (cello) en zijn neefje Andreas Romberg (viool) in het hoforkest spelen. Hij nodigde ze uit om in de hofkapel in Bonn op te treden en zo ontstond door bemiddeling van de kerkelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleder de vriendschap tussen Bernhard Romberg en Ludwig von Beethoven. Het concert van vanavond begint met een keuze uit Beethovens Duitse dansen, als opmaat tot Rombergs Vierde celloconcert. Hij schreef er tien, en in elk ervan demonstreert hij wat cellisten van hem kunnen leren: een vrije linkerhandtechniek die zich (met hulp van de duimpositie) moeiteloos manifesteert over het hele bereik van het instrument en dat altijd zingend en beschaafd. Rombergs carrière omspande meer dan een halve eeuw, en al beschouwde hij Beethovens opus 18 strijkkwartetten als onzinnige muziek en de Razoemovskikwartetten als onspeelbaar, de twee horen bijeen, het genie en de virtuoos. Zeker is dat ze later ook samen Beethovens Cellosonates opus 5 hebben gespeeld. Na de pauze klinkt Beethovens Tripelconcert uit 1805: drie solisten onder elkaar, maar ook samen en om-en-om met en tegen het orkest. (LB) Beethoven In 1790 the archbischop of Cologne passed by Münster and happened to hear Bernhard Romberg (cello) and his nephew Andreas Romberg (violin) playing in the court orchestra. He invited them to perform in the court chapel in Bonn thus the friendship between the Bernhard Romberg and Ludwig von Beethoven came about through the church dignitary s mediation. This evening s concert opens with a selection of Beethoven s German dances, as a prelude to Romberg s Fourth cello concerto. He composed ten in total, demonstrating in each work what cellists can learn from him: a free left-hand technique that (with the help of the thumb position) can effortlessly cover the entire compass of our instrument and, what s more, always in a lyrical and elegant manner. Romberg s career spanned more than a half century, and even though he considered Beethoven s opus 18 string quartets as senseless music and the Rasumovsky quartets as unplayable, the two belong together: the genius and the virtuoso. We know that they later also played Beethoven s Cello sonatas opus 5 together. Beethoven s Triple concerto from 1805 will follow after the interval: three soloists on their own, but also together and at times with or against the orchestra. Fratres van Arvo Pärt (in de variant voor twelve celli) is één van de beroemdste werken die speciaal voor de Berliner Cellisten werd geschreven. Since 1972 the Berliner Cellisten have been making this dream a reality. De Argentijns-Duitse componist en filmmaker Mauricio Kagel staat bekend als één van de meest spitsvondige figuren van zijn tijd. Geïnspireerd door de surrealistische wereld van onder meer Borges en Bunuel bedacht Kagel een nieuw muzikaal instrumentaal theater. Het spektakel stuk Match, voor twee cellisten en één slagwerker is gecomponeerd naar een droom over een razend moeilijke en steeds absurdere tenniswedstrijd tussen twee cellisten, met een percussionist als scheidsrechter. Als parodie op de klassieke virtuositeitscultus krijgen musici theatrale instructies mee, waarmee hij de luisteraar-toeschouwer zich wil laten realiseren dat elke instrumentale performance een dramatisch en visueeltheatraal gegeven is. In een tijd waarin de theatrale component van klassieke concerten steeds meer aan de orde is, was Kagel een pionier van wat nu via video, licht-en klankregie de concertpodia meer en meer bepaalt. Met de inspirerende titel Black Rock Unfolding (2009) schreef de Belgische componist Luc Brewaeys een prachtig werk dat zich geleidelijk aan ontvouwt in een uiterste virtuositeit die drijft op een complexe interactie van de cello solo en de elektronica. Arne Deforce Cello and Match!The Argentinian-German composer and filmmaker Mauricio Kagel is viewed as one of the most sophisticated figures of his time. Inspired by the surrealist world of Borges and Bunuel, among others, Kagel devised a new musical instrumental theatre. The spectacular work Match, for two cellists and a percussionist, was inspired by a dream about a formidably intricate and increasingly absurd tennis match between two cellists, with a percussionist as umpire. As a parody on the classical cult of virtuosity, the musicians also receive theatrical instructions. In this way, Kagel aimed to make the listener-spectator aware of the fact that every instrumental performance is both a dramatic and visual-theatrical phenomenon. In an era in which the theatrical aspect of classical concerts is increasingly being emphasised, Kagel was a pioneer of what is now becoming a determining factor of the concert stage with the use of video and light and sound direction. Under the inspiring title of Black Rock Unfolding (2009), the Belgian composer Luc Brewaeys has written a superb work that gradually unleashes an extreme virtuosity propelled by a complex interaction between the solo cello and electronics. Besides a freeze system that can isolate and extend (i.e. freeze) specific notes played by the cello, thus highlighting certain notes and chords while the cellist continues to play on, there are pre-recorded cello parts that expand the texture from a solo work to a polyphonic web of cello sounds. Vanavond presenteren zij de derde cd uit hun serie Dutch Cello Sonatas , gewijd aan Matthijs Vermeulen en Jan Ingenhoven. Wie krijgt het eerste exemplaar? Verder steken zij, onder de titel onze helden, een loftrompet op maar liefst acht autochtone en allochtone cellisten uit de eerste helft van de vorige eeuw, waarvan sommige hoorbaar aanwezig zullen zijn. Van de 19-jarige Strauss was het talent vroeg ontdekt, er was al werk van hem voor publiek uitgevoerd, een serenade voor blazers in Dresden en een vioolconcert in Wenen. In de burgerlijke samenleving van München en korte tijd later in Berlijn voelde hij zich wonderwel thuis. Alexander von Zemlinsky werd geboren in een Sefardisch milieu, vlak bij de Weense synagoge. Zijn vader was niet alleen ambtenaar, maar ook secretaris van de Joodse gemeente. Na zijn conservatoriumstudie, afgesloten met de uitvoering van een deel van zijn Eerste symfonie, werd Zemlinsky lid van de Tonkünstlerverein, waarvan Johannes Brahms, die het talent van de jongen had onderkend, ere-voorzitter was. Rachmaninov was zijn studie begonnen aan het conservatorium in St. Petersburg, maar voerde daar niet veel uit en switchte naar het conservatorium van Moskou waar zijn talent wel tot ontplooiing kwam. Helaas, zijn Eerste symfonie door componist Cesar Cui De zeven plagen van Egypte genoemd stortte hem in een depressie die enkele jaren duurde. (LB) Romantic sonatas The three Romantic sonatas that will be played this evening, with Fitzenhagen s waltz as dessert, were composed within the space of a decade: that of Richard Strauss in 1883, Alexander von Zemlinsky s in 1894 and Sergej Rachmaninov s in Yet the milieus in which the composers completed their works could not have been more different! The talents of the 19-year-old Strauss were discovered early on and some of his works had already been performed in public: a serenade for winds in Dresden and a violin concerto in Vienna. He felt wonderfully at home in Munich s bourgeois society and, some time later, in Berlin. Alexander von Zemlinsky was born in a Sephardic milieu, close to the Viennese synagogue; his father was a public servant and also the secretary of the Jewish community. Following his conservatoire studies, which concluded with the performance of a movement from his First symphony, Zemlinsky became a member of the Tonkünstlerverein. Johannes Brahms, who had recognised Strauss s talent early on, was its honorary president. Rachmaninov began his studies at the St Petersburg Conservatoire but achieved little there and soon transferred to the Moscow Conservatoire, where his talent blossomed. Unfortunately, his First symphony referred to by the composer Cesar Cui as the seven plagues of Egypt plunged him into a depression that was to last several years. Bach heeft laten inspireren. Gregor Horsch Koeznetsov Cello Kwartet Alexander Koeznetsov, geboren in 1847 in St. Petersburg, studeerde cello bij de befaamde cellist Karl Davidov. Daarnaast studeerde hij compositie bij Nikolaj Zaremba.Als cellist van het Russisch Strijkkwartet bracht hij onder meer de premières van de twee strijkkwartetten van Alexander Borodin en van het eerste kwartet en het sextet Souvenir de Florence van Tsjaikovski. Koeznetsov componeerde vier cellokwartetten en verschillende sfeerstukjes voor cello en piano. Van zijn overige composities is weinig bekend. Gregor Horsch Kuznetsov Cello Quartet Alexander Kuznetsov, born in St. Petersburg in 1847, studied the cello with the celebrated cellist Karl Davidov and composition with Nikolai Zaremba. In deze voorstelling plaatst Conny Janssen de emoties van dans en muziek tegenover de kille efficiency van de huidige wegwerpsamenleving. CELLO and DANCE In 2002 there was the legendary on-site performance of Waste and Glass in the ultramodern Alkmaar waste disposal station. This was followed by the theatre version that was selected for the Nederlandse Dansdagen [Netherlands dance days] as one of the best productions of the season. In this show, Conny Janssen sets off emotions created by dance and music against the bleak efficiency of today s throwaway society. The poetic style of her choreography, in combination with the dynamic music by Philip Glass performed live on stage by Cello Octet Amsterdam, proves the ideal means of representing this. 26 Cello-ensembles Geen strijkinstrument leent zich beter voor een groepsoptreden dan de cello. Zowel een diepwarm fundament en ronkende middenstemmen alsook solistische hoogten behoren tot de capaciteiten. Het maakt combinaties van vier, acht en zelfs twaalf cellisten goed mogelijk. Een groeiend aantal vaste ensembles werkt een steeds omvangrijker nieuw repertoire in de hand, terwijl er lustig wordt gearrangeerd. Is er bovendien een sfeervoller gezicht dan vele cellisten op één rij? Om die redenen staat bij deze derde Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale het internationale cello-ensemble centraal. Een unieke gelegenheid om de verschillende speelstijlen van cellisten wereldwijd te vergelijken. We verheugen ons bijzonder op de komst van de Berliner Cellisten, de twaalf cellisten uit de Berliner Philharmoniker. Deze vader aller cello-ensembles heeft zich als eerste groep wereldwijd geprofileerd. Menig componist schreef nieuw werk voor hen, onder wie Brett Dean, wiens Twelve Angry Men een Nederlandse première krijgt. Ook het cellocollectief van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest is present onder de noemer KCellO-Collectief. Zo moeten de twee beste orkesten ter wereld tijdelijk hun cellosectie missen en heeft het Muziekgebouw aan t IJ dus de 24 beste orkestcellisten in huis! Het KCellO-Collectief speelt onder meer een Rachmaninov-arrangement van Anner Bijlsma en de Bachianas Brasileiras nr.1 van Villa-Lobos. Naast miljoenen pianostudenten kent China ook een levendige cellopraktijk. De Chinese cellist Chu Yi-Bing, ooit leerling van Maurice Gendron, keerde na 21 werkzame jaren in Europa terug naar China. Hij leidt de cello-school van Peking en presenteert in Amsterdam de China Philharmonic Cellists. Op vrijdag 5 november verzorgt dit gezelschap de officiële opening in de hal. Vier dagen later spelen ze zowel muziek van Chinese componisten als bewerkingen van klassiekers uit de opera: Rossini, Tsjaikovski, Puccini, Bizet... Ook de Fransen ontbreken niet. In Les Violoncelles Français speelt een aantal beroemde solocellisten en kamermuziekmusici, maar het ensemble is verre van bijeengeraapt: er wordt structureel, serieus en hard gerepeteerd, met een verzorgd en aanstekelijk resultaat. Namens de Verenigde Staten is cellopedagoog Richard Aaron present, samen met de All-American Cello Band: acht Amerikaanse toptalenten die door hem bijeen zijn gebracht. Ze spelen een modern programma met werken van Amerikaanse componistes. En natuurlijk ontbreekt het Cello8ctet Amsterdam niet (voorheen Conjuncto Iberico), dat tijdens de vorige Biënnale de wereldpremière van Arvo Pärts O-Antiphonen speelde en nu samen met Conny Janssen een moderne dansvoorstelling brengt met muziek van Philip Glass. Naast deze vaste ensembles ontvangt de Biënnale ook een aantal ad hoc cellogroepen, die een lans breken voor bijvoorbeeld het prachtig romantische Cello kwartet in C van Koeznetsov. Het allergrootste cello-ensemble is natuurlijk het Mega Kinder Cello Orkest, gevormd door zo n 140 kinderen uit het hele land. Floris Don Cello ensembles No instrument is better suited to group performance than the cello. The instrument boasts a deep warm bass foundation and a throbbing middle register as well as soloistic heights. These characteristics give scope for combinations of four, eight and even twelve cellists. A growing number of permanent ensembles are paving the way for an ever-expanding new repertoire, while new arrangements are constantly being made. In any case, what could be more appealing than the sight of an imposing array of cellists on stage? For these reasons, the international cello ensemble forms the central theme of the third Amsterdam Cello Biennale. This presents a unique opportunity to compare the various playing styles of cellists worldwide. We are especially delighted to present the Berliner Cellists, the twelve cellists from the Berliner Philharmoniker. This father of all cello ensembles was the first such group to establish an international reputation. Many a composer has written new works for them, including Brett Dean, whose Twelve angry men will receive its Dutch première. The cello collective of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will also make an appearance under the name KCellO Collective. So the two best orchestras in the world will both be obliged to do without their respective cello sections, while at the same time the Muziekgebouw aan t IJ will have the 24 best orchestral cellists within its walls! KCellO will play a Rachmaninov arrangement by Anner Bijlsma and the Bachianas Brasileiras no. 1 by Villa-Lobos, among other works. Besides its millions of piano students, China also boasts a thriving cello school. The Chinese cellist Chu Yi-Bing, a former student of Maurice Gendron, returned to China after 21 years spent working in Europe. He is the director of the Beijing cello school and will present the China Philharmonic Cellists in Amsterdam. On Friday 5 November this group will perform at the official opening in the Muziekgebouw aan t IJ. Four days later, they will play music by Chinese composers as well as arrangements of opera classics: Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, Bizet The French will also participate. Les Violoncelles Français includes a number of renowned solo cellists and chamber musicians, however, it is by no means an ad hoc ensemble: the players rehearse diligently in a structured and serious manner, with polished and appealing results. The United States will be represented by the cello pedagogue Richard Aaron, together with the All-American Cello Band: eight American top talents brought together by him. They will perform a modern programme with works by American female composers. Naturally the Cello 8ctet Amsterdam (formerly Conjuncto Iberico) will join the party. During the previous Biennale it gave the world première of Arvo Pärt s O-Antiphonen; this time it will collaborate with Conny Janssen in a modern dance performance with music by Philip Glass. Besides these established ensembles, the Biennale will also feature a number of ad hoc cello groups, which will champion works such as the superbly romantic Cello Quartet in C by Kuznetsov. The biggest cello ensemble of them all is of course the Mega Children s Cello Orchestra, comprising about 140 children from throughout the Netherlands. Na de pauze treden acht topcellisten uit de Franse Celloschool voor het voetlicht verenigd in het cello-octet Les Violoncelles Français. Zij spelen een programma van liederen en opera-aria s, die cellist Roland Pidoux voor hen heeft bewerkt. Het programma is zowel een ode aan de menselijke stem, die immers van bas tot sopraan ongeveer hetzelfde toonbereik heeft als de cello, als een ode aan de voorloper van de cello, de familie van de viola s, aan het sonore geluid van een viola da gamba consort. Roland Pidoux was in de jaren 70 als cellist verbonden aan het Orkest van de Parijse Opera. Hij was getroffen door de enorme rijkdom aan repertoire, dat hij als cellist nauwelijks kende. Elke avond stond er weer andere muziek op de lessenaar, naast bekende werken als Carmen en Faust. Pidoux maakte kennis met fantastische dirigenten en grote operasterren, die operadirecteur Liebermann uitnodigde. Hij (Pidoux) werd gefascineerd door het operabedrijf, raakte er geheel van vervuld. Voor Pidoux is een achttal stemmen het ideale aantal, waarmee hij alle kleuren, nuanceringen in stemhoogten en diepten van de verschillende operapersonages tot hun recht kan laten komen. Binnenkort worden zijn arrangementen bij Editions Billaudot (Parijs) uitgegeven. Voici les Français Here come the French! During this Biennale, much attention will be devoted to the cello schools of various countries. Christophe Coin and Raphaël Pidoux (the son of Roland Pidoux) are the French masters of early music. They will perform works for various instrumental combinations by French composers and one Austrian composer (Wagenseil) of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. After the interval, eight top cellists from the French cello school will join forces on stage as the cello octet Les Violoncelles Français. They will perform a programme of songs and opera arias, arranged for the group by the cellist Roland Pidoux. The programme is an ode to the human voice, which after all has a similar range from bass to soprano as the cello, and also an ode to the cello s predecessor, the viol family, to the sonorous sound of a viola da gamba consort. In the 1970s Roland Pidoux was a member of the Paris Opera Orchestra. He was moved by the immense richness of the repertoire, which was relatively unknown to him as a cellist. Every evening yet another opera score was performed, besides the well-known works such as Carmen and Faust. Pidoux became acquainted with fantastic conductors and great opera stars, invited by the director Liebermann. He (Pidoux) was fascinated by the opera genre and became totally absorbed by it. Pidoux considers eight cello parts to be the ideal number with which he can do full justice to all the colours and the voice pitch nuances of the various opera characters. His arrangements will shortly be published by Editions Billaudot (Paris). Gedurende het eerste bezoek van de Amerikaanse president Obama aan China was het ensemble uitgenodigd om bij de welkomsceremonie op te treden. Dit evenement was tevens het eerste concert met Westerse kamermuziek dat ooit voor de Chinese president Hu Jin-Tao werd georganiseerd. Het programma van deze middag is een mix van Europese en Chinese muziek. Naast Tan Dun, die in Nederland bij een groter publiek bekend is door zijn opera s Tea en Marco Polo, staan ook twee onbekende namen op het programma. Wang Li-Ping heeft de beroemde vertelling The Dream of the Red Mansions van schrijver Cao Xueqin s ( ) als uitgangspunt genomen. De jonge componist Yang Yi-Bo heeft een al even mysterieuze titel aan zijn nieuwe compositie gegeven: Blue and White Porcelain, de Chinese elegante voorloper van ons Delfts Blauw. China Philharmonic Cellists Chu Yi-Bing, the cello maestro and founder of the ensemble China Philharmonic Cellists, travels throughout China, giving chamber music concerts with great devotion and energy. Chu s mission is to acquaint his fellow countrymen with this superb genre. Alongside European Romantic works, he programmes music that has its roots in the Chinese tradition; music by living Chinese composers. His ensemble, consisting of six to twelve cellists, is highly esteemed by audiences. During American president Obama s first visit to China, the ensemble was invited to perform at the welcome ceremony. This was also the first concert featuring Western chamber music ever to be organised by the Chinese president Hu Jin-Tao. This afternoon s programme is a mixture of European and Chinese music. Besides Tan Dun, known to wider Dutch audiences for his operas Tea and Marco Polo, two unknown composers will be featured on the programme. Te jong pieken betekent soms: vroeg opbranden. Te laat pieken vaak hetzelfde als: kans gemist. Want oud en veelbelovend, daarop zit niemand te wachten. Een schone taak is weggelegd voor leraren. Docenten aan het conservatorium, in het geval van muzikale wonderkinderen. Hoe technisch gemak te koppelen aan muzikale zeggingskracht. Hoe te voorkomen dat de jonge cellist in de puberteit zijn instrument niet aan de wilgen hangt? En hoe de trotse ouders van het jonge spul te managen? Daarover gaat het debat over talentontwikkeling op deze Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale. Neem nu concoursen. Voor paarden, niet voor mensen, meende Bela Bartók. Is het goed om eraan mee te doen? Is het nuttig voor een carrière? Niet elke winnaar breekt ook door, en tal van tweede- en derdeprijswinnaars van belangrijke concoursen gingen een glanzende carrière tegemoet. Is er een algemene sleutel voor succes, naast de individuele begeleiding die elk kind nodig heeft? En hoe belangrijk is de juiste buitenmuzikale begeleiding: omgaan met podiumangst, time-management, noem maar op. Gespreksleider is Radio 4-presentator Hans Haffmans. How (not) to ruin young talent Young and talented: these are the magical words of our society and above all the combination proves irresistible. But how does one ensure the blossoming of budding talent? Those who attain their peak too young sometimes experience early burnout, while peaking too late often boils down to missed opportunity. After all, who is interested in old and promising? Teachers are faced with a delicate task, as are conservatoire teachers, in the case of children with prodigious musical talent. And weigh up the importance of proper extra-musical guidance: dealing with stage fright, time management the list goes on. De Hal en Foyerdeck van het Muziekgebouw aan t IJ zullen ook deze keer weer gevuld zijn met bouwers die hun instrumenten en stokken tonen; ook zal een groep jonge bouwers weer in een gezamenlijke atelier werken aan een nieuw instrument. Tijdens het concert Nieuw! bespelen Monika Leskovar en Giovanni Sollima zes door loting geselecteerde instrumenten. Het publiek kan zijn eigen waarneming en geheugen testen doordat tijdens de tweede helft van de presentatie dezelfde instrumenten, in andere volgorde, achter een scherm opnieuw bespeeld worden. Cello making will feature prominently in the Amsterdam Cello Biennale. Semjon Kozoloepov wordt algemeen beschouwd als de grondlegger van de moderne Russische Celloschool. Tot zijn leerlingen behoorden onder meer Mstislav Rostropovitsj en zijn dochter Galina Kozoloepova. Die laatste was de lerares van vele grote Russische cellisten, waaronder Natalia Gutman. Ook Dmitry Ferschtman studeerde bij Kozoloepova en... ook bij Natalia Gutman. Vanzelfsprekend behoorden de Etudes van David Popper tot het vaste repertoire van iedere student in de toenmalige Sovjet-Unie. Merkwaardig genoeg bestond er in die tijd alleen een Russische editie met een selectie van slechts 25 van de 40 etudes uit Die Hohe Schule. Dmitry Ferschtman kiest voor deze avond een selectie uit die 40 etudes die voor hem het meest karakterestiek, muzikaal interessant en waardevol in relatie tot het cello-repertoire zijn. In de meer dan 30 jaar dat Ferschtman in Nederland aan verschillende conservatoria doceert heeft hij talloze cellisten in Nederland, bewust of onbewust, onderdeel dan wel deelgenoot gemaakt van de Russische Celloschool. Russian cello school Clearly, the title of this evening s programme initially derived from the performers background. Semyon Kozolupov is generally viewed as the founder of the modern Russian cello school. His students included Mstislav Rostropovitch and his daughter Galina Kozolupova. The latter was the teacher of many eminent Russian cellists, including Natalia Gutman. Dmitry Ferschtman also studied with Kozolupova as well as with Natalia Gutman. Naturally, the Etudes of David Popper were part of the set repertoire for every student in the former Soviet Union. Remarkably enough, there was only one Russian edition available in those days, featuring a selection of just 25 of the 40 etudes from Die Hohe Schule. For this evening Dmitry Ferschtman will present a selection of those etudes that he considers to be the most characteristic, musically interesting and valuable in relation to the cello repertoire. De cantate Being Beauteous (1963) voor sopraan, harp en vier celli van de Duitse componist Hans Werner Henze (1926) maakte op Lex van Delden ( ) zo n indruk dat hij in 1967 met zijn Musica Notturna zoiets als een Nederlandse tegenhanger componeerde voor dezelfde instrumentale bezetting, maar dan zonder zangstem. De merkwaardige combinatie van vier celli en harp, schreef Van Delden, fascineerde mij door haar ongewone sonoriteiten, die letterlijk ongehoorde mogelijkheden leken te bieden. Toch verschillen de stukken als hemel en aarde. In Being Beauteous, gebaseerd op het gelijknamige gedicht uit de bundel Illuminations van Arthur Rimbaud, straalt een esoterisch licht en domineren zowel in de cello- als zangpartij de (extreem) hoge liggingen die Van Delden deden besluiten juist voor de diepte te kiezen. Zijn quasi-vrije fantasie vol hevige contrasten is behalve donkerder ook veel dramatischer dan Henzes sobere, breekbare partituur vol post-mahleriaanse accenten. Over de compositie van Theo Verbey op het programma valt bij het ter perse gaan van deze tekst alleen te melden dat ze een even bijzondere instrumentencombinatie beproeft: cello en pianola. Ook Isang Yun koos een ongebruikelijke combinatie van instrumenten: cello en harp. (BvP) Being Beauteous Alongside two world premières and a Dutch première, the key works on this programme are two uniquely scored works that bear a special relationship to each other. The cantata Being Beauteous (1963) for soprano, harp and four celli by the German composer Hans Werner Henze (1926) made such an impression on Lex van Delden ( ) that he composed a Dutch equivalent in 1967 with his Musica Notturna, scored for the same instrumental combination but minus the vocal part. The remarkable combination of four celli and harp, wrote Van Delden, fascinated me with its unusual sonorities, which seemed to offer literally unprecedented possibilities. Nevertheless, the pieces are as different as night and day. Being Beauteous, based on the eponymous poem from the compilation Illuminations by Arthur Rimbaud, radiates an esoteric light and extremely high registers predominate in both the cello and vocal parts. In contrast, Van Delden chose to emphasise the bass register. His quasi free fantasy full of violent contrasts is not only darker but also far more dramatic than Henze s sober, fragile score full of post-mahlerian accents. Regarding the other Dutch compositions on the programme, all that can be said at the time of this text s publication is that they experiment with equally unusual instrumental combinations: Theo Verbey composes music for cello and pianola, while Isang Yun has opted for cello and harp. The eight cellists form a group of friends who enthusiastically immerse themselves in the compositions by four female composers selected by Aaron. Included on the programme are three world premières by students at the Juilliard School of Music in New York who have already received many awards. Elizabeth Lim (1986) is acclaimed for the poetic intensity of her compositions: The celli lamented and the harp danced, as one critic enthused. 42 Nieuw repertoire Verrassend, dissonant, meeslepend, harmonieus, ontregelend of gewoon leuk: naast het cello-ensemble is de moderne muziek een speerpunt van deze Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale. Nieuw repertoire speelde op voorgaande edities reeds een belangrijke rol en kon op veel publieke belangstelling rekenen. Maar dit keer gaan er liefst zo n vijftien nieuwe werken in wereldpremière, naast een stoet van Nederlandse premières en herontdekkingen. Traditiegetrouw is voor het Nationaal Cello Concours een opdrachtcompositie verstrekt. Na Verbey en Van Geel is het ditmaal de jonge Wilbert Bulsink die het verplichte werk voor de eerste ronde schreef: Vision and Labyrinth voor cello solo. Daarnaast kunnen deelnemers kiezen uit muziek van Ligeti, Crumb, Verbey en Hindemith. Natuurlijk is de minimal music van de inmiddels 73-jarige Philip Glass zeer populair; een selectie van zijn Reflections wordt gecombineerd met choreografie van Connie Janssen. Op donderdagavond is een programma met de nieuwste klanken samengesteld rondom Asko Schönberg. De Finse cellist Anssi Karttunen speelt dan van zijn landgenote Kaija Saariaho het smeltende en stralende Notes on Light in de versie voor ensemble. Ook gaan composities in première van de Nederlanders Martijn Padding, Jan van de Putte en Chiel Meijering. Ter inleiding speelt Karttunen tevoren de Chaconne van Colombi met variaties van 25 componisten, bij wijze van gezamenlijk verjaardagskado voor Karttunens 50ste verjaardag. Componerende vrouwen maken de dienst uit bij het concert van de All-American Cello Band, die muziek van onder meer Anne Wilson, Gity Razaz en Elizabeth Lim op de lessenaars zet. Ook intrigerend op donderdagmiddag: een nieuw werk voor cello en pianola (een automatisch spelende piano) van Theo Verbey. Ernst Reijseger staat vooral bekend om zijn creatieve improvisatiesessies, waarbij de cello op onvermoede manieren bespeeld wordt. Zijn inbreng bij het Mega Kinder Cello Orkest zal dus zeker stimulerend werken. Maar Reijseger legt ook composities vast op papier, zoals het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble laat horen. Floris Don New repertoire Surprising, dissonant, compelling, harmonious, disconcerting or simply enjoyable: alongside the cello ensemble, modern music is a spearhead of this year s Amsterdam Cello Biennale. New repertoire already played a significant role in past Biennale editions and attracted a high degree of public interest. However, this time no fewer than fifteen new works will receive their world première, along with an array of Dutch premières and rediscovered works. True to tradition, a new composition has been commissioned for the National Cello Competition. Preceded by the composers Verbey and Van Geel, this year the young Wilbert Bulsink has composed the obligatory work for the first round: Vision and Labyrinth for solo cello. Participants have a further choice of works by Ligeti, Crumb, Verbey and Hindemith. The minimalist music of Philip Glass now 73 years old enjoys immense popularity; a selection of his Reflections will be combined with choreography by Connie Janssen. Natuurlijk mocht Amber Docters van Leeuwen (winnares van het Nationaal Cello Concours 2008) daartussen niet ontbreken. Zij opent het programma met de relatief onbekende romantische Eerste sonate van de Russisch-Poolse, traditionele, twintigste eeuwse componist Nikolai Miaskovski. De Amerikaanse cellist David Requiro, winnaar van het Naumberg Concours in New York volgt met de Nederlandse première van de Sonate voor cello en piano uit 2007 van de in Nederland nauwelijks bekende Pierre Jalbert. De Servische Maja Bogdanovíc, opgeleid in Parijs, finaliste in verscillende concoursen en winnaar van het Aldo Parisot Concours in Zuid-Korea speelt op verzoek van de Biënnale de Cellosonate van Samuel Barber. Niet alleen omdat 2010 het Barber-jaar is (geboren in 1910), maar vooral ook vanwege het ontroerende tweede thema in het eerste deel van zijn cellosonate... István Várdai uit Hongarije sluit het programma af met een mini-recital. Drie korte werken uit Oost-Europa. De Eerste Rhapsodie van Bartók is oorsprokelijk voor viool, maar de Humoresque van Rostropovitsj hoort iedere cellist te kennen. Várdai was winnaar van de Brahmscompetitie in Oostenrijk en het prestigieuze concours van Genève. Met verschillende programma s treden zij op als solisten bij een orkest, in de (voor) programma s van bekende pop- en rockbands, zoals Apocalyptica, of als cellotrio met een eigen show, met dansers of toneelspelers. Hun muziek is gevarieerd en kleurrijk, van lieflijk tot snoeihard, gebracht met een tomeloze energie. Veel van hun arrangementen zijn gemaakt door Kārlis Auzāns, initiatiefnemer en artistiek leider van het trio. Dit is hun eerste optreden in Nederland. They are hugely popular in Latvia, these classically trained cellists, who have been leading an exciting existence touring pop venues in their homeland, Russia, the US and Europe since They perform an assortment of programmes as soloists with orchestra, as collaborating performers or supporting act in concerts of well-known pop and rock bands, such as Apocalyptica, or as a cello trio with their own show, joined by dancers or actors. Their music is varied and colourful: at times charming, at times delivered at full blast with boundless energy. Meestal hoort men de zogenoemde Fitzenhagen -versie, maar de deelnemers die voor Tsjaikovski kozen, moesten de originele versie instuderen. Wilhelm Fitzenhagen was de cellist voor wie Tsjaikovski zijn variaties componeerde en die de première bracht in Fitzenhagen bracht serieuze veranderingen aan in de volgorde van de variaties en maakte een andere coda, bedoeld om de prestaties van de solist in nog stralender licht te stellen. Tsjaikovski, in persoonlijke crisis op dat moment, kon de première niet bijwonen en had geen aandacht voor de wijzigingen en de gevolgen daarvan. Pas in 1941 werden de variaties in hun oorspronkelijke vorm in Moskou uitgevoerd, en het duurde zelfs nog tot 1980 voordat de authentieke versie officieel door Raphael Wallfisch met het BBC Philharmonic Orchestra onder leiding van Raymond Leppard werd gespeeld. Deze versie is ook in de finale te horen National Cello Competition Final The competition finalists will choose between Shostakovich s First cello concerto, with its four characteristic opening notes and the Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky. The Fitzenhagen version is the most frequently heard; however, the candidates who opted for Tchaikovsky were required to prepare the original version. Wilhelm Fitzenhagen was the cellist for whom Tchaikovsky composed his variations and who premièred the work in Fitzenhagen made significant alterations to the following order of the variations and composed a different coda, intended to place the soloist s virtuosic endeavours in an even more dazzling light. Tchaikovsky was undergoing a personal crisis at the time and could not attend the work s première, nor did he pay attention to Fitzenhagen s alterations and their consequences. It was only in 1941 that the variations were performed in their original form in Moscow and it was not until 1980 that the authentic version was officially performed by Raphael Wallfisch with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under Raymond Leppard. Klinkt net als een cello!..., is wat bassisten vaak te horen krijgen na een geslaagd recital of soloconcert. Altijd weer met die cello worden vergeleken terwijl de contrabas zo n eigen klank heeft. Nu is de vergelijking met de cello eigenlijk een enorm compliment, zeker als je dat vergelijkt met wat er vroeger nog wel eens werd gezegd. Ik citeer Johannes Brahms: Elke zuivere noot op contrabas is louter toeval. Waarschijnlijk heeft hij dit gezegd na een ruzie met zijn vader, die contrabassist was. De laatste jaren is de contrabas met steeds meer fantastische bassisten in een enorme opmars. En wie anders dan Anner Bijlsma, die al veel van deze bassisten heeft lesgegeven en groot pleitbezorger is voor de bas, kan dit programma presenteren?! Voor Het Uur van de Contrabas speel ik met mijn beste vriend en collega Burak Marlali alleen originele werken solo s en duo s. Eindelijk mogen we dat fantastische lage register opentrekken, de hoofdreden waarom ik bas ben gaan spelen en zullen we het ook hebben over de contrabaspartijen in het orkestrepertoire. Het was Beethoven die heeft gezegd: De meest muzikale persoon in een orkest of ensemble moet de bassist zijn! Rick Stotijn The Hour of the Double Bass...how impressive! It sounds just like a cello!... bass players frequently hear such remarks after giving a successful recital or solo concert. Always the same comparison with the cello, while the double bass has such a characteristic sound of its own. Actually, the comparison with cello is a huge compliment, certainly in contrast to what people used to say. Johannes Brahms once said: Every note played in tune on a double bass is pure coincidence. He probably said this after quarrelling with his father who was a double bassist. During recent years the instrument is undergoing a huge surge in popularity with more and more fantastic bass players appearing. And who better to present this programme than Anner Bijlsma, a great advocate of the double bass who has given lessons to many of these bassists?! For the Hour of the Double Bass I will perform only original works solos and duos- with my great friend and colleague Burak Marlali. Finally, we can open up that superb low register, the main reason why I chose to play the bass, and we will also focus on the double bass parts in the orchestral repertoire. 51 Een triomf voor Chin Acht jaar geleden hoorde de in Berlijn wonende Unsuk Chin (Zuid-Korea) Alban Gerhardt voor het eerst. I was really impressed by his playing and I immediately promised him to write a concerto for him. But he had to wait seven years!. De wereldpremière, met de uit het hoofd spelende Duitse cellist, was op 13 augustus 2009 tijdens een BBC Prom in de Royal Albert Hall. Publiek en pers waren laaiend enthousiast over dit intrigerende nieuwe concert. De afwisselend felle en lyrische dialoog tussen solist en orkest (met uitgebreid slagwerk) omschrijft Chin zelf als een soort psychologische oorlogsvoering, waaruit de cellist uiteindelijk als winnaar tevoorschijn komt. Het grootste compliment dat je een nieuw werk kunt geven is dat je het opnieuw wilt horen, schreef The Times: Een triomf voor Chin. De Guardian werd verrast door de originaliteit, klankschoonheid en expressieve diepgang. Ook bij Brahms gaat het in zijn late Dubbelconcert voor viool en cello om een originele verrijking van het in dit geval romantische concert. Al heeft het hem enige moeite gekost om beide soloinstrumenten met elkaar te laten wedijveren en ze tegelijkertijd ook met elkaar te mengen tot een duo. Met Mozarts Sinfonia concertante KV 364 (viool en altviool) behoort het Dubbelconcert van Brahms tot de weinige concerten in dit genre die nog steeds hogelijk worden gewaardeerd. Voor de première in 1887 in Keulen (solisten Josef Joachim en Robert Hausmann) tekende de componist zelf als dirigent. Vier jaar eerder vond in Parijs de première plaats van het even curieuze als dramatische symfonische gedicht Le chasseur maudit (de vervloekte jager), een bijna vergeten parel van César Franck. The world première with the German cellist, who played from memory, took place on 13 August 2009 during a BBC Prom in the Royal Albert Hall. Public and press gave this intriguing new concerto a wildly enthusiastic reception. Chin himself describes the by turns fierce and lyrical dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra (with extensive use of percussion) as a sort of psychological warfare, from which the cellist ultimately emerges as the victor. The greatest compliment that one can pay a new work is to wish to hear it again, wrote The Times: a triumph for Chin. The Guardian was astounded by the work s originality, beauty of sound and expressive depth. Brahms s late Double concerto for violin and cello was likewise an original enrichment of the Romantic concerto genre, in this case, although it was no easy task for him to have the instruments compete with each other while at the same time blending together as a duo. Together with Mozart s Sinfonia Concertante KV 364 (for violin and viola), Brahms s Double Concerto is among the few concertos in this genre that are still highly regarded. The composer himself conducted the première in Cologne in 1887 (soloists Josef Joachim and Robert Hausmann). Four years earlier, the première took place in Paris of the symphonic poem Le chasseur maudit (the cursed hunter), a nearforgotten gem by César Franck that is as curious as it is dramatic. Met de hulp van het Christiaan Vlek Fonds ging deze wens vorig jaar in vervulling en werd het KCellO-Collectief opgericht. Hun debuut in de serie IJ-Salon werd zeer enthousiast ontvangen. Het collectief wordt gevormd door Gregor Horsch, Johan van Iersel, Fred Edelen, Benedikt Enzler, Yke Viersen, Daniël Esser, Arthur Oomens, Chris van Balen, Sophie Adam, Christian Hacker, Julia Tom en Jérôme Fruchart. Daan Admiraal studied the oboe at the Amsterdam Conservatoire with Cees van der Kraan and orchestra and choir conducting with Louis Stotijn and Frans Moonen at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. He subsequently studied for some time with the renowned Russian conductor Kirill Kondrashin. Daan Admiraal conducts three university orchestras, the symphony orchestra De Philharmonie, the Helikon Orchestra and has been the conductor of The Hague Toonkunstkoor since He is also much in demand as a guest conductor with various orchestras. His repertoire spans six centuries of music: from Monteverdi s Maria Vespers to the Schönberg violin concerto. Mola Sylla Mola Sylla comes from Senegal and has been living in the Netherlands for years. He sings, plays and composes his own music. He combines the warm tonal qualities of his voice with African instruments such as the kalimba (thumb piano), xalam (a stringed instrument) and various percussion instruments, thus creating a unique sound. In many respects Mola Sylla is a pioneering musical explorer. Due to his improvisatory talents he is in great demand as a musician in all kinds of formations and styles. He obviously enjoys a great rapport with Ernst Reijseger: they play together regularly, at times joined by other musicians. The Netherlands Wind Ensemble (NBE) is a group of more than twenty musicians who join forces about sixty times per year to perform unique programmes in the Netherlands and abroad. The NBE members shared creative fervour and adventurous outlook leads to the creation of theatrical music programmes that mostly defy attempts at musical categorisation; the NBE performs music of all sorts and dimensions that fires the senses and the imagination. The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century was founded by the conductor and recorder player Frans Brüggen in The orchestra consists of 50 musicians from 23 countries. The musicians are all specialists in 18th and 19th century music and play on period instruments or modern copies of these. Their goal is to perform masterworks of the late Baroque and the Classical period in the most historically informed manner. Tegelijkertijd volgde hij lessen barokcello bij Jaap ter Linden en Viola de Hoog. In 2003 werd Gideon uitgeroepen tot Jong Muziektalent van het Jaar. Na zijn Bachelors vervolgde hij zijn opleiding bij Clemens Hagen aan het Mozarteum Salzburg. Onlangs behaalde hij zijn Masters met hoogste onderscheiding. In april 2009 won Ketevan de Servais prijs bij het Celloconcours in Gent (België). After beginning with piano lessons, she switched over to cello lessons with M. Chostaria at the age of nine. From she studied with Tamara Gabarashvili at the Conservatoire of Tblisi. 72 Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale in beeld en geluid Media-partner van de Biënnale is de KRO. De KRO zendt een groot aantal concerten uit waaronder een aantal rechtstreeks. Nieuw is de webcasting door de KRO van een aantal concerten. Deze zijn te zien en te horen op de site van Radio 4. Hilversum is ook vertegenwoordigd door de NTR (voorheen NPS) en de VPRO. De NTR zendt het concert op 9 november rechtstreeks uit en de VPRO maakt een impressie voor de nieuwe themakanalen Radio 4.
