2 Getting a breath of fresh air on Texel Texel is the largest of the Dutch Wadden Islands: an island formed by the wind, the sea and the hands of man. The Dunes of Texel are a National Park. They are very exceptional and are a part of the network of European Natura 2000 regions. The National Park is an important link for migrating birds between their resting and foraging areas. In this region, adventurous paths run along damp dune valleys, variable woods, open heath fields and dune lakes. Naturally, there is a tremendous diversity in plants and animals. However most importantly, Texel is a bird paradise. Every spring and fall is a coming and going of migrating birds. And when the tidal flats flood, the dunes swarm full with waders, ducks and gulls.

3 Walking with the National Forest Service An extensive network of paths in the dunes are designated by coloured stakes: Yellow: a through path (goes from A to B) Blue: a circular path (you end up where you begin) Green: extra trail open outside of the nesting season (16/8 (1/9) 1/3) Red: nature path; The Alloo nature path is also suitable for those in a wheelchair and blind and visually handicapped people. Dogs are required to be leashed in the dunes at all times! Information The National Forest Service has published folders with general information about the various areas or a description of a nature path. The brochure ( 3,75) Nature on Texel gives information about the Hoge Berg and the Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel. National Park National Parks are expansive nature regions with significant nature values with many opportunities to enjoy them. The Texel Dunes totally satisfy these criteria. A National Park bundles the cooperation of all those involved in the area. Well thought-out placement of walking and bicycle paths provide a good combination of recreation while still preserving nature. In that way, there is enjoyment for everyone and the nature in the National Park is well protected. Guided tours in 2010 (Dutch spoken) Would you like to get to know the areas better, then take a guided excursion with a park ranger. It lasts around two hours. You can make reservations at the Visitors Center Dunes of Texel in Ecomare. T , infobalie@ecomare.nl Participation costs 7 per person, children age up to 12 years old 4. (Secrets of the night, 9 and 6 respectively). (The excursion program is subject to changes). For groups, other times and locations for excursions can be organized. Information and addresses Information is available in Ecomare and the Visitors Center Dunes of Texel, located south of De Koog. When visiting Ecomare, you can begin your own exploration in the Dune Park via the nature paths or under guidance (during the high season, unless arranged otherwise). Ecomare itself is a natural history museum with an information and educational department, as well as a seal and bird sanctuary. The Centers are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dogs are not allowed.
