Curriculum Vitae Marike Lemmers was born the 31st of January 1985 in Haarlem and grew up in Overveen. She graduated high school in 2002 after which she decided to travel and participate in a volunteer project in a South Indian maternity clinic before starting medical school at the University of Amsterdam in 2004. During her studies, she took a leave of absence to again travel, this time to South America, study Spanish and to work on a local general health initiative in the jungle of Ecuador. Her master thesis on the use of repeat chest x-ray in the evaluation of a trauma patient led to her first publication, and a second scientific internship led to another publication on delayed gastric emptying after major pancreatic surgery. Her interests in obstetrics and gynecology acquired, in South India was confirmed during her internships at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis Oost, Amsterdam. She followed an elective internship of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Hospital de Clinicas (university hospital) of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and her final internship of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Zaans Medisch Centrum, Zaandam. After her graduation in 2011 as MD, it was also the Gynecology department of the Zaans Medisch Centrum that foresaw in her first job. During this first job she started a part time PhD project at the Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam, that resulted in the present thesis. This PhD project was supervised by prof. dr. B.W.J. Mol (promotor, Universiteit van Amsterdam and University of Adelaide), dr. W.M. Ankum (co-promotor, University of Amsterdam) and dr. J.A.F. Huirne (co-promotor, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). In January 2013 she started her residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Flevoziekenhuis, Almere (dr. W.M. van Baal) and continued at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam (prof. dr. J.I.P. de Vries). She combined this research period with her work as a clinical doctor. Marike lives in Amsterdam, together with Arno van Rijswijk and their children Raúl and Loreen.
