2 Summary The Radical-type Chemistry of Rhodium and Iridium Complexes with 'non-innocent' Nitrido and PNN Pincer Ligands In this Thesis our efforts to synthesize and study group 9 nitrido and nitridyl radical complexes are described. Several new complexes have been isolated and/or characterized by (inter alia) X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, electrochemistry and mass spectrometry and supported bydft calculations. In Chapter 1 we give a brief introduction in the field of catalysis, followed by a more in-depth analysis of dinitrogen fixation. We then discuss the role of metal nitrido complexes (M N) in the field of dinitrogen fixation. The characteristics and bonding of nitrido complexes is described, and we discuss the difficulties in obtaining M N complexes of late transition metals. Both isolated examples as well as reactive intermediates of M N (and M=N ) are presented and discussed. Furthermore, we give an overview of tridentate pincer ligands in the field of catalysis, followed by an introduction of the ligands applied in the research conducted in this Thesis, namely the PNNH (-di-(tert-butyl)phosphinomethyl-2,2 - bipyridine) and PNP (2,6-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) ligand. In Chapter 2 we demonstrate that photochemical activation of [Rh(N 3 )(PNNH)] produces the paramagnetic (S = ½) [(PNN)Rh=N -Rh(PNN)] (PNN = methylenedeprotonated PNNH), which could be crystallographically characterized. Spectroscopic investigation of [(PNN)Rh=N Rh(PNN)] indicates predominant bridging nitridyl radical ( N 2- ) character, which is confirmed computationally. This nitridyl complex reacts selectively with CO, producing two equivalents of [Rh I (CO)(PNN)], presumably by nitridyl radical N N-coupling (Scheme 1). 145

3 Scheme 1. Synthesis of [(PNN)Rh=N -Rh(PNN)] and its reactivity with CO. In Chapter 3 we build on the results described in Chapter 2. The Chapter describes our efforts to investigate the effect of replacing rhodium by iridium, as well as the application of a new PNN ligand on the formation of bridging nitridyl species. Photochemical activation of [(Ir(N 3 )(PNNH)] produces the paramagnetic (S = ½) species [(PNN)Ir=N -Ir(PNN)] from an analogous reaction as its rhodium congener (Scheme 2). Spectroscopic investigations indicate that [(PNN)Ir=N Ir(PNN)] has predominant bridging nitridyl radical ( N 2- ) character, which is confirmed computationally. Like its rhodium congener, [(PNN)Ir=N Ir(PNN)] reacts selectively with CO producing two equivalents of [(Ir I (CO)(PNN)], presumably by nitridyl radical N N coupling. Hence, changing the metal from rhodium (Chapter 2) to iridium (Chapter 3) does not result in large differences in reactivity. Scheme 2. 4 In an attempt to synthesize a mononuclear rhodium nitridyl complex with a reduced tendency to undergo nitridyl radical N N coupling, we describe the synthesis of a bulky analog of the bipyridine-based PNNH ligand used in Chapter 2, bearing a tertbutyl group at the 6 -position of the bipyridine moiety. This new bulky t Bu 3 PNNH ligand is accessible via a three-step synthetic route, involving a selective nucleophilic substitution step, followed by a Stille coupling and a final hydrophosphination step to afford the desired 6-(tert-butyl)-6'-((di-tertbutylphosphino)methyl)-2,2'-bipyridine ( t Bu 3 PNNH) ligand (Scheme 3). Scheme 3. Synthetic scheme toward the new t Bu 3 PNNH ligand. This newly developed t Bu 3 PNNH ligand is used for the synthesis of sterically protected rhodium(i) azido complex [Rh(N 3 )( t Bu 3 PNNH)] (Scheme 4). Photolysis and thermolysis of this complex are investigated in an attempt to synthesize a mononuclear rhodium complex with a terminal nitrido moiety (Scheme 4). Unfortunately, characterization of the reaction product(s) using multinuclear NMR, cold-spray HR ESI-MS and EPR spectroscopy turns out to be inconclusive, leading to questions regarding the composition of this newly formed species, which is both EPR- and NMR-silent. Interestingly, data obtained by MS spectrometry reveal a dinuclear complex of which the structure could not be precisely determined. Unfortunately, despite several attempts, we have been unable to grow crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction studies. As a result, the molecular structure of this paramagnetic complex remains unknown. 147

In Chapter 4 we describe our efforts to investigate the effects of replacing the PNN rhodium complexes as described in Chapters 2 and 3 by a PNP rhodium complex on the reactivity of azido and nitrido/nitridyl species. As such we explore the reactivity of a [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] complex (Scheme 5), with the aim of synthesizing and characterizing a rhodium nitrido/nitridyl complex. One-electron oxidation of the rhodium(i) azido complex [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] leads to instantaneous and selective formation of the mononuclear rhodium(i)-dinitrogen complex [Rh(N 2 )(PNP)] +. Interestingly, the [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] complex also acts as a catalyst for electrochemical N 3 oxidation in the presence of excess azide at a substantially lower potential (E p ~ 0.23 V vs. Fc +/0 ) than direct oxidation at a Pt-electrode (E p ~ V vs. Fc +/0 ). Cyclic voltammetry in the presence of an excess of tetrabutylammonium azide [N(nBu) ] 4 N 3 reveals that electrocatalytic N 3 oxidation occurs at roughly the same potential as the first oxidation wave of the [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] complex. The mechanism of azide oxidation is not straightforward. Unlike expected direct N 2 -loss from [M II (N 3 )(PNP)] +, followed by dinuclear N N coupling of two nitridyl species, as was reported in related earlier work with neutral complexes (M = Rh, Ir), the cationic rhodium(ii)-azido [Rh(PNP)(N 3 )] + seems to react via a different pathway. IR spectroelectrochemistry, CV simulations, EPR spectroscopy and supporting DFT studies all point to a route involving the coupling of two [Rh(PNP)(N 3 )] + complexes to produce the mixed-valent dinuclear [(PNP)Rh I (μ-(1,3)-n 3 )Rh III (N 3 )(PNP)] 2+, which fragments via N N bond splitting to form [Rh I (N 2 )(PNP)] + and [Rh V (N)(N 3 )(PNP)] +. Subsequent intramolecular azide attack at the terminal nitrido moiety of the formally rhodium(v) intermediate [Rh V (N)(N 3 )(PNP)] + then produces a second equivalent of [Rh I (N 2 )(PNP)] + (Scheme 5). This mechanism deviates 148

6 substantially from the mechanisms described in Chapters 2 and 3, and shows that replacing the PNNH/PNN ligand system by a neutral PNP ligand has a profound effect on the reactivity of the corresponding rhodium azido and nitrido/nitridyl complexes. In Chapter 5 we describe our efforts to explore the chemical non-innocence of the PNNH ligand on the reactivity of the corresponding rhodium complexes. Hydrogen atom abstraction of [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] using with the 2,4,6-tert-butylphenoxyl radical in toluene produces the diamagnetic dinuclear complex [Rh(μ-Cl)(PNN)] 2 (Scheme 6). 1 H NMR, X-ray crystallography studies and supporting DFT calculations show that this diamagnetic dinuclear complex is held together by a slightly elongated C C bond and π-π interactions of the bipyridine rings. At elevated temperatures the C C bond can be broken, forming two mononuclear paramagnetic [Rh(Cl)(PNN)] complexes. Upon cooling, these couple again to regenerate the diamagnetic dimer. The mononuclear [Rh(Cl)(PNN)] complex reacts with water, after which [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] is formed, together with an unidentified product, which is presumably the corresponding hydroxide complex. 149

Two-step procedures to prepare [Rh(μ-Cl)(PNN)] 2 out of [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] by separate deprotonation and oxidation steps do not result in formation of [Rh(μ- Cl)(PNN)] 2. Oxidation of [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] leads to a disproportionation reaction in which Rh I and a Rh III species are formed. Deprotonation of [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] with potassium tert-butoxide results in precipitation of KCl from the solution with selective formation of a new, neutral product, containing a methylene-deprotonated PNN ligand. HR ESI-MS reveals coordination of THF as the ancillary ligand. Moreover, [Ir(PNN)(THF)] was synthesized as well and both [M(PNN)(THF)] complexes (M = Rh, Ir) have been tested as catalysts for the coupling of amines with alcohols, and for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols. Complex [Ir(PNN)(THF)] is slightly active as an alcohol dehydrogenation catalyst, but overall performance is worse than earlier established systems. In conclusion, this thesis describes the first two examples of isolated nitridyl radical complexes. The unique combination of the right amount of steric congestion and the 150

8 redox activity of the PNNH ligand allows the formation of these bridging nitridyl species. Different ligand systems with more steric congestion give rise to different reactivity of the azido complexes, such as an intramolecular reaction between an azido and the nitrido groups. Although the field of late transition metal nitride/nitridyl complexes has been significantly expanded, a well-characterized Rh N complex (or its nitridyl analog) stable at room temperature, is still elusive. In the future, efforts could be made in subtly changing the electronic and steric parameters of the ligand system, perhaps allowing such a species to be stable enough for X-ray diffraction studies. Such follow-up studies might also enable application of Rh N species (or their nitridyl analogs) in catalysis. The chemical non-innocence of the PNNH ligand has been established as well. Hydrogen atom transfer reactivity leads to a partially carbon-centered radical complex that can reversibly dimerize by forming a C C bond. Such complexes, which store an electron pair, could be applied in reversible generation of ligand radicals, rhodium(ii) metallo-radicals and/or in molecular batteries. 151

10 Samenvatting De Radicaalchemie van Rhodium en Iridium Complexen met Redox-Actieve Nitrido en PNN Pincer Liganden In dit proefschrift worden onze inspanningen om groep 9 nitrido en nitridyl radicaal complexen te synthetiseren en te karakteriseren beschreven. Verschillende nieuwe complexen zijn geïsoleerd en gekarakteriseerd door (onder meer) éénkristal röntgendiffractie, multinucleaire NMR en IR spectroscopie, elektrochemie en massaspectrometrie, ondersteund door DFT berekeningen. In Hoofdstuk 1 wordt een brede introductie in de katalyse beschreven, gevolgd door een meer gedetailleerde analyse van stikstoffixatie. Hierna wordt de rol van metaalnitrido complexen beschreven (M N) binnen stikstof fixatie. De bindingseigenschappen van nitrido complexen wordt bediscussieerd, alsmede de moeilijkheden betreffende het synthetizeren van (stabiele) M N complexen met late overgangsmetalen. Zowel geïsoleerde voorbeelden als ook reactieve intermediairen van M N (en M=N worden hier beschreven. Verder wordt er een overzicht gegeven van de rol van tridentaat pincerliganden binnen de katalyse, gevolgd door een introductie van de liganden die bij het onderzoek beschreven in dit proefschrift gebruikt zijn, namelijk PNNH (di-(tert-butyl)phosphinomethyl-2,2 -bipyridine) en PNP (2,6-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)pyridine). In Hoofdstuk 2 wordt de fotochemische activering van [Rh(N 3 )(PNNH)] beschreven. Deze reactie resulteert in de vorming van het paramagnetische complex (S = ½) [(PNN)Rh=N Rh(PNN)] (PNN - = methyleen-gedeprotoneerd PNNH), welke kristallografisch gekarakteriseerd kon worden. Spectroscopisch onderzoek van [(PNN)Rh=N -Rh(PNN)] toont aan dat dit complex in hoofdzaak een gebrugd nitridyl-fragment ( N 2- ) heeft, wat bevestigd kon worden met de hulp van computerberekeningen. Dit nitridylcomplex reageert selectief met CO, waarna het twee equivalenten [Rh I (CO)(PNN)] vormt, waarschijnlijk via N N koppeling van twee nitridyl radicalen (Schema 1). 153

Dit hoofdstuk beschrijft het onderzoek naar de effecten van het vervangen van rhodium door iridium, alsmede de toepassing van een nieuw PNN ligand voor de vorming van gebrugde nitridylverbindingen. Fotochemische activering van [(Ir(N 3 )(PNNH)] resulteert in de vorming van de paramagnetische (S = ½) verbinding [(PNN)Ir=N -Ir(PNN)] in een zelfde soort reactie als voor het rhodium analoog. Spectroscopisch onderzoek van [(PNN)Ir=N -Ir(PNN)] laat wederom een voornamelijk gebrugd nitridylkarakter ( N 2- ) zien, wat bevestigd kon worden met de hulp van computerberekeningen. Net zoals zijn rhodium analoog reageert [(PNN)Ir=N Ir(PNN)] selectief met CO en vormt twee equivalenten [(Ir I (CO)(PNN)], waarschijnlijk via N N koppeling van twee nitridyl radicalen. Dit laat zien dat het vervangen van rhodium door iridium (Schema 2) niet resulteert in grote veranderingen in de reactiviteit van dit type verbindingen. 154

In een poging om een mononucleair rhodium nitridylcomplex te maken dat een gereduceerde neiging heeft om N N koppeling te ondergaan, is een sterisch omvangrijker analoog van het bipyridine bevattende PNNH ligand (zoals gebruikt in Hoofdstuk 2) ontworpen en gesynthetiseerd. Dit nieuwe ligand heeft een tert-butyl groep in de 6 positie van het bipyridine deel. Dit nieuwe t Bu 3 PNNH ligand is te synthetiseren in drie stappen; een nucleofiele substitutie, gevolgd door een Stillekoppeling en als laatste een hydrophosphineringsstap, welke het gewenste 6-(tertbutyl)-6'-((di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl)-2,2'-bipyridine ( t Bu 3 PNNH) ligand vormt (zie Schema 3). Schema 3. Syntheseschema leidend tot het nieuwe t Bu 3 PNNH ligand. Dit nieuw ontwikkelde t Bu 3 PNNH is gebruikt om het sterisch beschermde rhodium(i) azido complex [Rh(N 3 )( t Bu 3 PNNH)] te synthetiseren (Schema 4). Fotolyse en thermolyse van dit complex zijn bestudeerd in een poging om een mononucleair rhodium complex te synthetiseren dat een eindstandige nitridogroep 155

13 bevat. Helaas kon de uitkomst van de reactie niet bepaald worden, omdat de gebruikte spectroscopische technieken (multinucleaire NMR, cold-spray HR ESI- MS en EPR spectroscopie) geen eenduidige verklaring van de data toelieten, wat resulteerde in vragen over de samenstelling van de reactieproducten, die in NMR noch in EPR signalen gaven. Interessant genoeg suggereren de data verkregen met behulp van MS spectrometrie de vorming van een dinucleair complex. Ondanks verschillende pogingen is het helaas niet gelukt om voor röntgendiffractie geschikte éénkristallen te groeien. Hierdoor blijft de precieze structuur van dit paramagnetische complex onbekend. Schema 4. Synthese van [Rh(N 3 )( t Bu 3 PNNH)] en de pogingen om een eindstandig rhodium nitrido complex te synthetiseren. In Hoofdstuk 4 wordt onderzoek naar de effecten van het vervangen van een PNN ligand (zoals beschreven in Hoofdstuk 2 en 3) door een PNP ligand op de reactiviteit van azido en nitrido-/nitridylverbindingen met Rh beschreven. Zodoende is de reactiviteit van een [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] complex (Schema 5) onderzocht, met als doel een rhodium nitrido/nitridyl complex te synthetiseren en karakteriseren. Eén-elektron oxidatie van het rhodium(i) azido complex [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] leidt tot de directe en selectieve vorming van het mononucleaire rhodium(i)-distikstof complex [Rh(N 2 )(PNP)] +. Bovendien kan het [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] complex functioneren als een katalysator voor elektrochemische azide oxidatie, bij een substantieel lagere potentiaal (E p ~ 0.23 V vs. Fc +/0 ) dan directie oxidatie aan een platina-electrode (E p ~ V vs. Fc +/0 ). Cyclische voltammetrie in aanwezigheid van een overmaat aan tetrabutylammonium azide N(nBu) 4 N 3 laat zien dat electrokatalytische azide oxidatie plaatsvindt bij grofweg dezelfde potentiaal als de eerste oxidatie van het [Rh(N 3 )(PNP)] complex. Het mechanisme van de azide oxidatie is verre van triviaal. In tegenstelling tot het verwachte directe verlies van N 2 van [M II (N 3 )(PNP)] +, 156

14 gevolgd door dinucleaire N N koppeling van twee nitridylverbindingen, zoals eerder beschreven is in hieraan gerelateerd werk met neutrale complexen (M = Rh, Ir), blijkt de kationische rhodium(ii)-azido verbinding [Rh(PNP)(N 3 )] + te reageren via een ander pad. IR spectro-electrochemie, CV simulaties, EPR spectroscopie en ondersteunende DFT berekeningen wijzen allemaal op een pad waarin twee [Rh(PNP)(N 3 )] + verbindingen met elkaar koppelen en het dinucleaire [(PNP)Rh I (μ- (1,3)-N 3 )Rh III (N 3 )(PNP)] 2 vormen. Vervolgens fragmenteert dit complex door middel van het splitsen van een N N binding, wat resulteert in de vorming van [Rh I (N 2 )(PNP)] + en [Rh V (N)(N 3 )(PNP)] +. De hieropvolgende intramoleculaire aanval van het azide deel op het terminale nitrido fragment van het formeel rhodium(v) intermediair [Rh V (N)(N 3 )(PNP)] + leidt uiteindelijk tot het tweede equivalent van [Rh I (N 2 )(PNP)] + (Schema 5). Dit mechanisme wijkt substantieel af van de mechanismen die zijn beschreven in Hoofdstuk 2 en 3 en het laat zien dan het vervangen van het PNNH/PNN ligand-systeem door een neutraal PNP ligand verstrekkende gevolgen heeft voor de reactiviteit van de bijbehorende azido en nitrido/nitridyl complexen. De reactiesnelheidsconstanten zijn geschat met behulp van CV simulaties en ondersteunende DFT berekeningen. In Hoofdstuk 5 wordt het onderzoek naar de chemische betrokkenheid van het PNNH ligand op de reactiviteit van de bijbehorende rhodium complexen beschreven. Abstractie van een waterstofatoom met behulp van het phenoxyl-radicaal leidt tot de vorming van het diamagnetische dinucleaire complex [Rh(μ-Cl)(PNN)] 2 (Schema 6). 157

15 1 H NMR, kristallografisch onderzoek d.m.v. röntgendiffractie en ondersteunende DFT-berekeningen laten zien dat dit dinucleaire complex bijeengehouden wordt door een C C binding die ietwat langer is dan gebruikelijk, alsmede door π-π interacties van de bipyridine-ringen. Bij verhoogde temperatuur kan de C C binding worden gebroken, wat leidt tot de vorming van twee mononucleaire paramagnetische [Rh(Cl)(PNN)] complexen. Als het reactiemengsel weer gekoeld wordt, vormt het diamagnetische dimeer weer. Het mononucleaire [Rh(Cl)(PNN)] complex reageert met water, waarna [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] wordt gevormd, samen met een ander nietgeïdentificeerd complex, vermoedelijk het gerelateerde hydroxide complex. Twee-staps procedures om [Rh(μ-Cl)(PNN)] 2 te synthetiseren vanuit [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)], door middel van aparte deprotonatie en oxidatie stappen, hebben niet geresulteerd in de vorming van [Rh(μ-Cl)(PNN)] 2. Oxidatie van [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] leidt tot een disproportioneringsreactie waarin Rh I en Rh III deeltjes gevormd worden. Deprotonering van [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] met kalium tert-butoxide resulteert in precipitatie van KCl uit de oplossing en de selectieve vorming van een nieuw, neutraal product, welke een methyleen-gedeprotoneerd PNN ligand bevat. HR ESI-MS toont de binding van THF als co-ligand aan. Hiernaast werd ook [Ir(PNN)(THF)] gesynthetiseerd en zijn beide M(PNN)(THF)] complexen (M = Rh, Ir) getest als katalysator voor de koppeling van amines met alcoholen en voor acceptorloze dehydrogenering van alcoholen. [Ir(PNN)(THF)] is enigszins actief als een alcohol dehydrogeneringskatalysator, maar functioneert slechter dan eerder beschreven systemen. 158

Synthese van [Rh(Cl)(PNN)] 2 door abstractie van en waterstofatoom van [Rh(Cl)(PNNH)] en het resultaat van de pogingen om deze verbinding te synthetiseren door middel van separate oxidatie- en deprotonatiestappen. We kunnen concluderen dat in dit proefschrift de eerste twee voorbeelden van geïsoleerde nitridyl-radicaalcomplexen beschreven zijn. De unieke combinatie van een correcte sterische omgeving en de redox-activiteit van het PNNH ligand heeft geleid tot de vorming van deze bruggende nitridylverbindingen. Verschillende ligandsystemen met grotere sterische hinder zorgen voor een andere reactiviteit van azido complexen, zoals intramoleculaire aanval tussen azido en nitrido groepen. Hoewel het vakgebied van late overgangsmetaal-nitrido/nitridyl complexen significant is uitgebreid, bestaat er nog steeds geen goed gekarakteriseerde Rh N verbinding (of nitridyl analoog) die stabiel is bij kamertemperatuur. In de toekomst zouden pogingen hiertoe gedaan kunnen worden door middel van het subtiel aanpassen van de elektronische en sterische omgeving van het ligandsysteem, wat mogelijk zou kunnen leiden tot een Rh N deeltje dat stabiel genoeg is om gekarakteriseerd te worden met behulp van röntgendiffractie.
