In deze Connecthor besteden we namelijk zeer uitgebreid aandacht aan de activiteiten rondom de 55 e verjaardag van Thor met een heel scala aan activiteiten, waaronder diverse excursies en een gala, die allemaal in woord en beeld zijn vastgelegd. Daarnaast is er aandacht voor andere zaken, waaronder de ontwikkelingen in het onderwijs. Het Bachelor College heeft zijn vuurdoop gehad en ook de Graduate School krijgt steeds meer vorm. En sinds september heeft het potentiaalgebouw nieuwe bewoners; het Solar Team Eindhoven! Wat voor moois zij aan het ontwikkelen zijn lees je natuurlijk ook in de nieuwe editie. Tenslotte willen we op deze plek ook graag even stilstaan bij het eerste lustrum van Connecthor zelf. De afgelopen 5 jaar hebben wij als redactie ons voor de volle honderd procent ingezet om een prachtig faculteitsblad te maken vol actualiteiten en bijzonderheden, diepte-interviews, maar ook amusement. Terugkijkend op deze 5 jaar, zijn wij er als redactie trots op dat we samen met jullie een mooi blad hebben mogen maken en hopen dit ook de komende jaren te mogen doen! 6 IFaculteit Board issues By: Ton Backx New Year s speech January 7 th, 2013 Ladies and Gentlemen, I first of all wish you a happy and healthy New Year. I hope that you will be able to get most, if not all, of your whishes fulfilled this year! 2012 has been a challenging year with new opportunities for our faculty. Some of these challenges we have been able to cope with well and are worthwhile mentioning: Continue the strong growth in the number of first-year students entering our EE Bachelor and Automotive program to 130 Improve our efficiency in the number of students finishing their Propedeuse within one year as a first step towards the necessary improvement of our efficiency The successful start of our Bachelor College Keep our faculty finances healthy despite the significant reduction in our direct funding ( First money stream ) For the second year in row we have been able to establish a significant growth in the number of first-year students choosing for our EE or Automotive Bachelor. With 130 students we now are well above 100. The improved attention for our first-year students definitely results in a significantly lower drop-out of students during the first year. The personal interviews and the intensive coaching of the students clearly motivate students. Only people that have real difficulties passing the exams have stopped their EE study in the first half year. The number of first-year students that will get a preliminary negative advice is again expected to be low. Despite some problems with Calculus, the start of the Bachelor College went reasonably well. We expect that most of the students will be able to finish the exam successfully in a second try during the coming exam period with the additional guided training we do. As every year, a lot has happened. Several of our people again organized well-attended international conferences. Four people I want to mention specifically: Paul van den Hof started in February 2012 managing the CS group as successor of Paul van den Bosch. A shock we faced was the stroke that caught Henk-Jan Bergveld in May. Henk-Jan fortunately is slowly recovering again and I hope we will have him back in our faculty again in the course of this year. Massimo Mischi reached the top 10 at the TEDx Amsterdam competition from over 300 contributions Kevin Williams has been appointed full professor after he received his VICI in 2011 In 2012 we started with quite some financial challenges due to a significant cut in our firstmoney-stream budget as a consequence of the recession. We have been able to cope with it very well in the course of the year. We will close the books on 2012 in accordance with our expectations. Overall we may conclude that our faculty has been doing well in I want to thank all of you for your contributions to realize this is promising to be a very challenging year again. 04 connecthor

7 FaculteitI Attention is needed to further strengthen Automotive skills within our faculty. The rapidly growing number of Automotive students requires more capacity. To meet these needs we will hire two additional people at Assistant-Professor level with both EE and Automotive skills. We will also call upon more of you to contribute to specific courses and projects. Our new government announced that further cost reductions may be necessary due to the Euro crisis. We may expect that part of the cost savings will result in further cuts of our budget in near future. Several faculties of our university for that reason have started to reorganize. Our faculty has demonstrated the past years that we are capable to generate the funds needed to keep our organization financially healthy. Almost all of our capacity groups have a sound financial basis despite the fact that we lost more than 25% of our direct funding the past years. As we have a well-performing organization and as we are a strong team, we the Board of the Faculty have decided to cope with the financial problems posed upon us by further strengthening our positions and the organization needed to get the necessary additional external funding. We don t want to cut in the strong team we are. Although it will require significant effort and contributions from all of us again this year, we strongly believe in our capabilities to win the projects and get the funding required. To assure that we don t have to reorganize in near future I call upon all of you to help keeping our financial position sound by contributing to the acquisition of external funding (2 nd and 3 rd money stream funding). The projects and programs, oriented towards application of the new technologies developed by us and set up with our main partners, have to generate funding for our short term and long term research projects and have to enable us to compensate for the loss of direct funding. Our Centre for Wireless Technologies Eindhoven, Centre for Care and Cure Technologies Eindhoven and Centre for Power and Energy Eindhoven form a solid basis to help us improve our visibility and our performance in acquiring the necessary funds. Our Centre for Power and Energy Eindhoven requires the appointment of a new Scientific Director and a Project Officer though, to make it perform. As 2013 is the last year that we will receive funding for our NRC Photonics Top Research School, we need to finalize the financial structuring of our activities in this field to assure continuity. The restructuring of the cleanroom activities managed by Huub Ambrosius is part of this. We will start new initiatives as part of the university wide Valorisation Program. This program is focusing on smooth transfer of knowledge developed as part of our research projects to industry and society for application and product development. To further strengthen our collaboration with industry and to get additional funding for our research, we need to diversify in the way we work together with industry. Industries are showing increasing difficulties with direct financing of 4-year PhD projects. They look for short-term results and are prepared to pay for these results, but are facing difficulties to commit financing for long-term research activities. This year we will try to get first people involved in short term valorization projects with industry. The money earned with these activities can then be used for (co-)financing longer term PhD and postdoc positions. At capacity group level we will make sure that everybody is requested to predominantly contribute on the basis of her/his strengths to our overall performance. This year we will have the start of the Graduate School. With the start of the new academic year in September 2013, also our EE Master will be part of the new Graduate School. This will coincide with the start of the second-year Bachelor College program. We not only need to revise our second- and third-year course programs, but we also need to further establish university wide coherence in the program of our Bachelor College and Graduate School. We need to motivate our students to work towards passing their exams at their first attempt as much as possible to meet the efficiency targets set for The efficiency of each exam needs to be at 70% or higher. Looking at our current performance this is quite a challenge as we don t want to give up on quality and level delivered. This year we want to further increase the number of first-year students starting their Bachelor study in Electrical Engineering to more than 150. The further growth in Automotive Bachelor students will help us to achieve this challenging target. The turbulent world will confront us with quite some challenges in 2013 as indicated above, but the winning team spirit we have created together within our faculty convinces me that we will be able to find solid solutions for the problems that we will face. The challenges will even make us stronger than we have ever been. I call upon all of you to make sure we remain at least as healthy as we are now and even further strengthen our position! 9 VerenigingI From the President By: Harold Vervoort About 55 years after the first electric watch, the accident at Cape Canaveral, Sputnik I and Sputnik II, Thor had its 11th Lustrum. The festivities started on the 26th of November with the Lustrum Stunt. What should have been the new world record Tetris of 1000m2 ended in a fiasco. The preparations couldn t go on as planned because of the storm, so everybody worked even harder the last day to finish it in time, but that was not enough. Unfortunately we did not think that the hooks on the side of the building would be such a problem. With the hurried lifting of the Tetris field a lot of cables snapped and we had to give up. I was already very nervous for my speech together with Tom Geelen chairman of the Lustrum committee to open the Lustrum, but now we had to come up with something else, because the speech we prepared had become unsuitable. We only had a few minutes in the elevator to come up with a new story to open the Lustrum with and tell the 6 camera teams that the Tetris system wasn t going to work. The Lustrum month contained many activities, not only relaxing activities like a cantus and a trip to the Efteling, but also activities aimed at personal development, such as a Training Lifehacking, an excursion to IHC Merwede, a lunch lecture from Ziut and an excursion to Prodrive. A total of 17 activities were organized in 20 days time and saving the best for last with the grand finale: the Thor lustrum gala. There were never more women on a Thor activity than this time. After everybody was dressed up very nicely, we went to castle Heeswijk with a bus. After being welcomed with a glass of Prosecco and a speech by the Thor Lustrum Committee, we went down to the dining room in the dungeons of the castle. After dinner, it was time for desert in the castle hall. Now the time had come for some other speeches, Honorary Member of Thor Mr. Verlijsdonk, started and spoke some lovely words about the last five years and his hopes for the future. He was followed by Honorary Member Mr. Kerpen, who looked back on his time as President of Thor, spoke some wishes for the future and closed up by starting to sing the Thor song. It was overwhelming. I think it never sounded as loud and beautiful before as this time in the castle hall. Now it was my time to speech, I was very inexperienced and I had to compete with these amazing speeches which I could never top. I have to say it was more difficult to talk to over 150 Thor members from that balcony than it was to talk to 6 camera teams after the failure of the Lustrum Stunt. But I managed not to screw up too bad and tell most of the things that were in my notes. The gala continued with a party in the dungeon, where we partied well into the night. Afterwards the bus brought everybody back to Eindhoven: a successful party that everybody enjoyed and the end of the Thor Lustrum. We all fell in the pit that is called vacation: doing nothing but reflecting and relaxing. Time to overthink the Ragnarok and to draw our conclusions from the chaos. We learned a lot about stress and about ourselves. Let the chaos of the Ragnarok make us all stronger and start the new year in good spirit with hopes for our future. 10 IFaculteit Introducing... Hi, my name is Michel Habets. I was born (1988) and raised in Berg en Terblijt, a small village near Maastricht. After high school, I moved to Eindhoven to study Electrical Engineering at TU/e. Last December, I received my master degree in the Control Systems group. I did my graduation project at Philips Research on thermal modeling of LED platforms. In January, I started as a PhD candidate at the Control Systems group. My research project is about thermal control for projection optics in the next generation of lithography machines. This research will be carried out in close cooperation with ASML. I m really looking forward to work in this challenging environment and I hope to aid Moore s Law in its continued endeavor to ever smaller feature sizes. Since my childhood, I spend a fair amount of my spare time at the local Scout Group. I m still an active member and I volunteer as a Beaver (for 4-7 year olds) leader once a week. I also like mountain biking, travelling and spending time with friends and family. I would like to introduce myself as PhD researcher in the EES group. My name is Jos de Regt and I finished the Master Electrical Engineering last year November at the Eindhoven University. The graduation project was related to power systems and grid analysis and so were my activities beside my study program. In those days I was board member of debating society DSD Waldur for which I contributed in organizing activities related to power systems. Moreover, from these activities I gained insight into all kinds of activities involving power systems. Therefore, I decided to start a graduation project in cooperation with DNV KEMA and TenneT. This project focuses on over-voltages in high-voltage grids due to lightning strikes. The challenging issue of this project was the organization of field measurements, which were required for an accurate grid model. After the graduation project, I decided to start a PhD project at the Eindhoven University. This research focuses on high-voltage cable rating of installed cables by TenneT. Further, I m member of the starting commission of Dutch Young CIGRE. This organization offers young professionals, which are interested in power systems, a network of experienced specialists in the field of power systems. 08 connecthor

11 FaculteitI Hi, my name is Luis Hurtado and I was born 25 years ago in a small town in the south of Colombia. I did my bachelor in Electronics and Electrical Engineering at Universidad de los Andes in Bogota where I ve also lived most of my life. After my thesis project on Grid Impacts of DG, I became highly interested in renewable generation and smart grids, the reason why I decided to come to the TU/e and start my master in Sustainable Energy Technology. After a year of trying new things at the Innovation Sciences Department and a paper to be published on Solar Grid Parity, I am back to Electrical Engineering to start my PhD research on Building Energy management Systems at the Electrical Energy Systems group. In my spare time I like listening to music, specially a fusion between classic music and rock, reading, occasionally dancing (Latin music), playing football and going to concerts and festivals. I am big football fan although I don t have any favorite teams in the Netherlands. It s been two years since I first arrived in the Netherlands and the experience has been great and I am looking forward to the coming years. Hi, my name is Gijs Meuleman and I am 23 years old. I was born in Ouddorp, a small village about 100 km southwest of Rotterdam. Later on, I moved to Arnemuiden, a small village in Zeeland. In 2010, I received my Bachelor Electrical Engineering from the Hogeschool Zeeland. After that I started my Master Electrical Engineering at TU/e where I graduated (cum laude) last November. Recently, I started my PhD project in the Mixed-Signal Microelectronics group. My research project is about high-speed continuous time bandpass sigma delta modulators. The main challenge is to achieve a wide conversion bandwidth while maintaining modulator stability. Also, in 2008 I started my own company in printed-circuit-board (PCB) design. During the past four years I have supported various customers by realizing their product requirements using custom built electronics. In my spare time, besides working in my own company, I like to go jogging on the road. Recently I have started to run marathons. I am thankful for the opportunity to work with so many talented people here at TU/e. I am looking forward to the coming four years! Best regards, Gijs Maart

12 INieuws De Vlaai In deze editie van de Connecthor gaat de vlaai naar de Lustrumstuntcommissie van Thor. Afgelopen november hebben zij een poging gewaagd om het wereldrecord grootste Tetrisveld te verbreken. Helaas is dit na maanden van hard werken niet gelukt. Toch gaat de commissie het nog een keer proberen. De redactie hoopt dat ze mede door deze vlaai veel nieuwe energie vinden om in het nieuwe project te steken. KIENAVOND GERED Hoi allemaal, ik ben Delphi en er is mij gevraagd om een stukje te schrijven over de kienavond. Daar ik elke donderdag gezellig een borrel ga drinken in het PVOC, hoorde ik dat het kienen ter ziele zou gaan als er niemand zich zou aanmelden die dit wilde gaan organiseren. Ik ga zelf nooit kienen alleen 1 keer per jaar bij de TU/e, dus ik wist een beetje hoe het er aan toe ging en er waren altijd mooie prijzen. Nadat verschillende mensen tegen mij zeiden: Waarom doe jij dat niet? heb ik me maar op het laatste nippertje laten overhalen en dit gemeld bij het PV bestuur dat erg blij was dat het kienen door kon gaan. Toegangskaarten laten drukken en deze snel in de verkoop gegooid. Dan in het hele TU/e gebouw ( waar ik echt geen weg weet ) met een plattegrondje gaan zoeken naar de 10 verschillende afdelingen waar ik toegangskaarten mag brengen zodat die alvast op de afdeling verkocht kunnen worden. Na heel het gebouw gehad te hebben van afd.1 tot en met afd.10 kwam ik daar het gebouw uit, maar ojee waar stond mijn auto nou? En nu maar hopen dat de verkoop gaat lopen omdat de meeste mensen al dachten dat het kienen niet meer door zou gaan. Geld gekregen om prijzen te gaan inkopen, wel leuk met andermans geld! Alle reclameblaadjes vergeleken voor de aanbiedingen. Dan tellen, hoeveel rondes, hoeveel prijzen ik nodig had en natuurlijk 4 prachtige hoofdprijzen. Dan nog heel veel zij-prijsjes wat eigenlijk het moeilijkste was, want daar heb je ook maar een bepaald budget voor. Best Student Paper Award At the 19th IEEE Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux - IEEE SCVT 2012 Eindhoven, 16th November 2012, Agis Tsiatmas, PhD student at the Signal Processing Systems group, received the best student paper award for his paper The Optical Illumination Channel. Dan het barpersoneel regelen, wat het minst moeilijk was, want dit team doet dit al jaren en die weten ook wat ze ongeveer aan drinken en eten nodig hebben. Nu de mensen die moesten komen nog natuurlijk, dat was wel spannend want je koopt toch alles in voor een aantal waarvan je hoopt dat die zullen komen. Gelukkig dat is gelukt, er waren ruim 300 mensen. Een groot succes dus waar ik heel blij mee was, want het was toch wel spannend zo de eerste keer. Ook na verschillende mensen gesproken te hebben waren ze zeer tevreden over de organisatie en over de prachtige prijzen. Dus ik denk dat ik volgend jaar wel weer de pineut zal zijn maar ik heb het zelf ook erg leuk gevonden om dit te organiseren. De groetjes en tot volgend jaar. 13 NieuwsI Automotive voor het voetlicht tijdens de Jet-Net Career Days Op 20 en 21 november 2012 was de TU/e gastheer voor Jet-Net, het Jongeren en Technologie Netwerk Nederland. Jet-Net is een samenwerkingsverband tussen bedrijven, onderwijs en overheid. Het Solarteam Eindhoven en de Bachelor-opleiding Automotive kregen de gelegenheid zich hier te midden van vele interessante bedrijvenstands te presenteren aan ruim 1300 scholieren. Dat was weer een mooie gelegenheid om Automotive bij onze doelgroep voor het voetlicht te brengen als interessante bètatechnische vervolgopleiding. PhD EES teambuilding: Go karting After two bowling events, our group demanded a more challenging team-building activity. Thanks to our captain Petr Kadurek, it was possible to organize a perfect afternoon and evening. Li Yan advised to go carting, to put all body mass on the throttle and burn the rubber of our tires. Regardless of all adrenaline that was present on the track, still some colleagues drove like they went for grocery shopping. Those who put their focus on speed were attacking without mercy. Nevertheless, the combination of female-driving and male-racing lead to two most exiting cart sessions where we had a lot of fun. 14 INieuws Education Award This year, the Student Body returned to its tradition of organizing the education awards. These awards go to the best teachers of the last semester in the academic year 2011/2012. In order to find the best teachers of the Electrical Engineering department the Student Body surveyed the Electrical Engineering and Automotive students. These surveys enabled students to assess each course they attended based on two criteria. The first is how well the lectures and instructions were given and the second criterion is how comprehensible the course material was. The results of the survey are collected and analyzed to determine who wins the award. In contrast to previous years, the education award also considers Automotive courses, since this is a new major at our department. The teachers who won were: The awards ceremony took place in the Walhalla where the awards were handed to the respective teachers by the Student Body. Along with a certificate congratulating them on their accomplishment, the teachers were also handed a bottle of wine. We hope that these teacher can serve as an example for the rest of the faculty on how to motivate students and how to make education fun for everyone. Afscheid Piet Klessens Na een dienstverband van bijna 40 jaar bij de faculteit Electrical Engineering heeft Piet Klessens op 13 december jl. afscheid genomen en gaat hij gebruik maken van de FPU. 15 FaculteitI Ontwikkelingen in het onderwijs Door: Jan Vleeshouwers Bachelor College Het Bachelor College heeft zijn vuurdoop gehad, met wisselend succes. Onze 1e-jaars hebben Calculus uit het eerste kwartiel dramatisch slecht afgerond, met maar ongeveer 30% voldoendes. We zijn daarom nu bezig met herhalingsinstructies, waarin geen sommen meer aan bod komen die te simpel zijn en daardoor de indruk wekken dat je het wel kunt. We hopen dat onze 1e-jaars de herkansing in januari wél halen, want die elementaire wiskunde moet je gewoon snel in je vingers hebben. Voor Computation haalde toch nog meer dan de helft een voldoende, ondanks het regelmatige gemor gedurende het kwartaal. Maar de oude opzet van het vak past duidelijk niet in de mal van het Bachelor College. Voor praktijk-geöriënteerd onderwijs is de eis van het Bachelor College van maximaal 8 contacturen per week geen logische eis, misschien zelfs een onmogelijke. Maar programmeervaardigheid en computerkennis zijn onderwerpen die EE-studenten snel onder de knie moeten hebben. Een oplossing is nog niet duidelijk. Het Rock-Your-Baby-project was dit jaar in twee delen gesplitst, ondergebracht bij Circuits in kwartiel 1 en bij Signals in kwartiel 2. Daardoor kon het opnieuw als kennismakingsproject draaien. Hoewel de sfeer goed was, slaagde dit jaar maar één projectgroep erin de baby stil te krijgen, en dat is voor een kennismaking niet het resultaat dat we graag zien. De belangrijkste oorzaak is waarschijnlijk dat de begeleiding in het 2e kwartiel, vanwege de grens aan de contact-uren, te licht is geweest. Voor Circuits en Automotive Trends waren we tevreden met de uitslagen. Bij Circuits deelt de faculteit die tevredenheid met de EE-studenten: het vak in zijn nieuwe opzet is een geslaagd vak. Bij Automotive Trends waren de uitslagen uitstekend, maar de AU-studenten waren duidelijk niet voorbereid op een dergelijk beschouwend vak meteen aan het begin van hun technische studie. Voor het tweede kwartaal hebben de 1e-jaarsstudenten hun eerste keuzevakken gekozen. Het meest populair onder onze studenten was het Automotive project, met 70 deelnemers. Het project is inmiddels afgesloten met een wedstrijd in de koude buitenruimte van Metaforum. De modelauto s hadden daar duidelijk minder moeite mee dan de toeschouwers. Andere keuzes draaiden soms onverwacht uit op een domper, zoals het vak Nanotechnologie, waarvoor je een chemiepracticum moest hebben gedaan in het 1e kwartiel, en Creative Programming, dat qua niveau ver onder de maat was. In de Opleidingscommissie is de laatste hand gelegd aan de opzet van het 2e Bachelor College jaar, en ook aan de keuzevakken die de faculteit gaat aanbieden binnen de bekende thema s Connected World, Care & Cure en Smart and Sustainable Society. Vlak voor Kerstmis hebben alle 1e-jaarsstudenten hun eerste studieadvies gekregen. In grote lijnen is het beeld hetzelfde als de afgelopen jaren. Van de EE-studenten zijn er tot dusver maar een paar die gestopt zijn, maar er is wel een forse groep die op het randje zit en bij de tentamens van januari alles op alles zal moeten zetten. Van de AU-studenten vertrok in oktober een groep naar het HBO, waar we van schrokken, maar daar staat tegenover dat er nu nog maar weinig 1e-jaars in de gevarenzone zitten. Graduate School De masteropleiding gaat steeds meer op in de Graduate School, in elk geval in naam. De universiteit heeft een Task-force Graduate School ingesteld, die vanaf dit voorjaar gaat werken aan een nadere invulling. Het idee is dat de masteropleidingen een veel nauwer verband krijgen met de PDEng-opleidingen en de PhD-projecten en we hopen dat dat meer studenten trekt, maar ook dat daarmee meer Nederlandse studenten na de master voor een universitair vervolg kiezen. Vooralsnog zijn de plannen pril. Wel is er in de opleidingscommissie gestudeerd op de consequenties van deze ontwikkelingen voor de master. Dat leidde tot de conclusie dat we zo min mogelijk moeten veranderen aan de bestaande masteropleiding, maar dat we wel meer flexibiliteit nodig hebben. Onze eigen bachelorstudenten die aan de EE-master beginnen, worden gevarieerder. De EE-master staat bijvoorbeeld ook open voor studenten met een AU-bachelordiploma. Maar op alle fronten groeit de variatie. Binnen de afspraken van de TU/e met Zhejiang University krijgen we bijvoorbeeld volgend jaar masterstudenten binnen die nog een project moeten doen ter afronding van hun studie in China. Studenten vanuit het HBO kunnen tijdens hun HBO-opleiding al met het schakelprogramma bezig zijn en kunnen daar als ze hier instromen een deel van hebben gedaan. De OC denkt daarom aan een grotere rol voor de toelatingscommissie, aan meerdere mogelijkheden per jaar om een vak af te ronden, aan verroosterde standaard -paden voor de verschillende vakgroepen/tracks en aan meer variatiemogelijkheden in omvang van stages en afstudeerwerk. De voorlichting aan bachelorstudenten zal intensiever worden, omdat die al vroeg keuzes kunnen maken voor bepaalde specialisaties. De belangrijkste inhoudelijke wijziging betreft het Professional Development cluster. De OC stelt voor dat cluster uit te breiden tot een kwartaal, en aparte varianten te maken voor wie het bedrijfsleven in wil, voor wie voor een PDEng-opleiding kiest en voor wie een PhD-project wil gaan doen na de master. Koen Mouthaan (left) with one of his students, Winson Lim (right) In September 2011, I was very fortunate to receive the TU/e education award, which included a prize of 5000 to be used for educational purposes. I decided to do a mini-sabbatical at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I chose the NUS for two reasons. Firstly, the Bachelor success rate in the Electrical Engineering (EE) Department is extremely high. Eighty per cent of the total intake of students completes a Bachelor degree within the stipulated four-year period. Only five percent drops out in the first year. It is interesting to note that the NUS is highly regarded and is ranked twenty-third in the Times Higher Education rankings (TU/e is ranked 115). Secondly, one of our visiting scientists, dr.ir. Koen Mouthaan, is the coordinator of the first and second year Electrical Engineering undergraduate program at NUS. Since dr. Mouthaan was educated in the Netherlands (TU Delft), he was able to help me understand how the education system works in Singapore. In this article, I would like to share the key findings of my visit with you. Intake and success rate The number of Electrical Engineering students at the NUS is significantly higher than the number at our university, i.e. 2,800 (NUS) compared to 700 (TU/e). Despite the larger number of students, their success rate is much higher and their drop-out rate is only five per cent. What is their secret? Prior to my visit, I thought that the students, the majority of whom are Asian, would be highly motivated and extremely focused on their studies. I found out that this is only partly true. It is indeed true that many NUS students do not spend a lot of time on extra-curricular activities, such as student associations or part-time jobs. However, I attended several lectures and tutorials and observed some students walking in and out during the lessons and use their smart phones and laptops for (probably) updating Facebook messages, tweeting, or even playing computer games. In my discussions with some of the lecturers, they confirmed that this student behavior happens regularly. One of the reasons for the high success rate could be that the scope and complexity of the course does not demand as much from the students as the courses that we offer. However, having compared the curricula and content of several courses, this does not seem to be the case in general, although the curriculum at the NUS does differ significantly from our old curriculum. In fact, the whole structure is similar to our new Bachelor College, with more room for general courses (e.g. physics) and electives. This could be positive news for our new Bachelor College concept! One of the major differences between the NUS and TU/e is the grading system, which is illustrated in Fig. 1. The highest score for each course is an A+ and the lowest score an F (Fail). Students are only required to repeat a course if they score an F. The numerical value corresponding to a grade point is added to the CAP formula, also in case of an F-score. The key element in this system is that every student not only receives a diploma after graduation, but also a transcript and a classification as indicated in Fig.1. The transcript reflects all grades they have obtained, including the F-grade if they had to retake a module. This adds to the incentive for students to do well the first time they take a module. The NUS system implies that the grade levels of their graduates are less uniform than those of our graduates. Another aspect is the use of the so-called bell-curve grading system (Gaussian distribution). This means that for large modules there are rules on the percentage of A-grades to avoid grade inflation and that generally less than 20% of the students fail a module. Our fail rates are often as high as 50%. At first sight, one would expect the NUS system to lead to a drop in the scope and complexity of the undergraduate program. The main reason why this does not happen is because many students are extremely competitive, aiming for the highest CAP and associated classification. A higher CAP means 14 connecthor

17 Varia I better career perspectives and higher salaries. For an academic career or for obtaining a position in the government, a high CAP is mandatory in Singapore. Comparison of curricula As well as investigating the success rates, I also compared the Electrical Engineering curricula at both universities. The fouryear program at NUS comprises 160 Modular Credits (MC), corresponding to 160*32.5=5200 hrs. Compare this with our three-year program of 180*28=5040 hrs. This implies that our students program is much more condensed than that of the NUS program. The top level structure of their curriculum is very similar to our new Bachelor College structure, and includes: General modules: 42MC Major-specific modules: 70MC Electives I (unrestricted): 16MC Electives II (major-specific): 32MC Fig.2 shows a more detailed comparison of the content of the compulsory part of both bachelor programs. It shows that, in general, we spend more time on the core of EE. This is partly compensated by the fact that more electives are major-specific at NUS. Another interesting comparison is the number of contact hours per course. In our Bachelor College, each course represents 5 ECs and has 64 scheduled contact hours in a period of 8 weeks. With three courses in parallel, our students have 24 contact hours per week. At NUS, each course represents 4 MCs and has, typically, between 36 and 48 contact hours over a period of 12 weeks. With five to six modules in parallel, this corresponds to only contact hours per week, which leaves more time for self study. Other interesting observations University Town at the NUS Campus There are activities going on at the NUS Campus 24/7! At least, this was the impression I got when I was there. All the Engineering Department s Master and PhD courses take place in the evenings, which explains the number of students and staff members in the food courts around 6 p.m. This particular choice was made to make more efficient use of the lecture theatres and lab facilities and to give the Master students the opportunity to combine a full-time job with a Master program. This means that staff members regularly have teaching duties until 9:30 p.m. one or two evenings a week. Another reason for all the activity at the NUS campus is the proximity of the University Town. This is a relatively new part of the campus where students live, eat, shop, study, do sports, and relax during the entire week. It consists of several so-called University Colleges, in which about five hundred students live together in one building. Each College houses a mixture of students from all departments. In addition to their regular courses, they also have to attend additional classes that are given on Saturdays or in the evenings. Concluding remarks The NUS demonstrates that even within the department of Electrical Engineering high success rates are possible. The key differences between the NUS and TU/e are, firstly, that they use a grading-on-the-curve system and, secondly, that they have a four-year bachelor program whereas ours is con densed to three years. Furthermore, their students have fewer scheduled contact hours per week compared to ours. The positive news for our Bachelor College concept is that the NUS runs a similar program with encouraging results to date. Figure 1: Grading system at the NUS, MC=Modular Credit. 18 IFaculteit Nieuwe receptioniste Door: Suzanne Kuijlaars Vanaf mei 2012 is er een nieuw gezicht bij de receptie. Monica Kloet is de opvolgster van Ad Aarts die vorig jaar met pensioen is gegaan. Het werd hoog tijd om aan Monica te vragen hoe het haar bevalt bij de receptie van Electrical Engineering. De vraag of ze het naar de zin heeft wordt beantwoord met een volmondig ja. De leuke aspecten van haar baan zijn onder andere de vele mensen die zich melden aan de balie. De onverwachte gebeurtenissen maken ook iedere dag weer anders dan de voorgaande. Op een dag kreeg Monica een melding van de bewaking dat er een scooterdief gesignaleerd was. Gelukkig bleef het bij een melding en hoefde zij de ongenode gast niet te arresteren. Ook de alarmen hebben haar wel eens met de handen in het haar doen zitten. Iedere keer als er een vluchtdeur gebruikt wordt, en dat gebeurt aan het begin van het collegejaar frequent doordat de eerstejaars zich nog wel eens vergissen, gaat er een alarm af. Monica heeft zich meerdere malen vertwijfeld afgevraagd hoe het alarm weer uit te krijgen. Behalve het te woord staan van de gasten hebben de medewerkers van de receptie nog tal van andere werkzaamheden. Tot hun taken behoren onder andere het beheren van de sleutels, het voeren van een deel van de inkoopadministratie, de postverdeling, het beheer van de Jonkerzaal en de lichtkrant boven de balie. De internationale kant van de functie spreekt haar ook erg aan. Niet voor niets is ze bovenmatig geïnteresseerd in de Franse taal en cultuur. Menig vakantie voert dan ook naar het zuiden. Als Monica s ochtends vroege dienst heeft opent ze om uur het gebouw. Bij de late dienst doet ze s avonds om uur lichten uit, schakelt monitoren uit, sluit collegezalen en ten slotte het gebouw. Dan zijn ook alle verdiepingen, van het Walhalla tot aan vloer 13, door haar gecontroleerd. Het lijkt mij best griezelig om in de donkere dagen s avonds alleen door het gebouw te lopen, maar Monica heeft er geen moeite mee en toont zelfs verbazing als ik daar naar vraag. Lang moest ze nadenken over een aspect van haar baan waarover ze minder enthousiast was. Toch iets gevonden: de bedrijfskleding was verre van flatteus. Gelukkig heeft ze het ontwerp van haar kleding nog kunnen beïnvloeden wat geresulteerd heeft in een bedrijfsoutfit die eleganter is dan het oorspronkelijke ontwerp. Ook was Monica niet te spreken over de rooklucht die vanuit de naastgelegen rokersruimte de receptieruimte binnendrong. Dit euvel werd veroorzaakt door een gat in de tussenwand. Een goede receptioniste is niet voor een gat te vangen en dus stopte ze dit gat voor eens en voor altijd dicht met heel veel papier. Al met al heeft Monica het erg naar haar zin bij de receptie van Electrical Engineering en ze hoopt er nog lang te blijven. 16 connecthor

19 FaculteitI Kerstdiner in een lokale bezienswaardigheid Door: Suzanne Kuijlaars en Martijn van Beurden De Opwettense Watermolen Deze watermolen, gelegen aan de Kleine Dommel in Nuenen, heeft gefungeerd als koren-, olie-, zaag- en volmolen. De molen heeft twee waterraderen. Het grootste rad heeft een doorsnee van 9,3 m en is daarmee het grootste rad in Brabant. De molen dateert uit de elfde of de dertiende eeuw. Daarover is men niet zeker. In 1664 is het complex gedeeltelijk afgebrand en in 1764 werd de molen geheel door brand verwoest. De molen werd daarna weer herbouwd. Vincent van Gogh vond het geheel blijkbaar zo mooi, dat hij er een schilderij van gemaakt heeft. In 2010 is de molen gerestaureerd en is het grote molengebouw omgetoverd tot restaurant, waarin nog vele oude elementen te bewonderen zijn. De Heerlyckheid In 2012, en wel op 11 december om precies te zijn, vond er een ander gedenkwaardig evenement plaats op deze idyllische plek nabij Eindhoven. Toen mochten de medewerkers van Electrical Engineering in het restaurant een Kerstdiner nuttigen, aangeboden door het Faculteitsbestuur. De genodigden waren welkom van af uur. In de invallende schemering werd het terrein verlicht en enigszins verwarmd door een aantal houtvuren. Na het inleveren van de jas bij de garderobe in een tent buiten, kreeg iedereen bij binnenkomst in de zalen een welkomstdrankje aangeboden, waarna er aan tafeltjes uitgebreid kon worden gepraat met collega s en hun partners. Welkomstwoord Nadat de zalen waren volgelopen ontstak Ton Backx zijn welkomstspeech. Hij keek daarin terug op het afgelopen jaar, met aandacht voor een aantal specifieke gebeurtenissen. Ook blikte hij alvast vooruit op 2013, waarin nieuwe uitdagingen zich zullen voordoen, waarbij hij speciaal de aandacht vroeg voor het verbeteren van het rendement in het onderwijs en het verder laten toenemen van de onderzoeksfinanciering door middel van projecten. Het einde van de speech luidde de opening van het lopend buffet in, waar uiteenlopende warme en koude gerechten werden aangeboden. Daarmee ontdekten wij waarom het restaurant de naam De Heerlyckheid gekregen heeft. Gelukkig voor de laatkomers was het buffet uren later nog open en waren de schalen nog rijkelijk (aan) gevuld. Live muziek Na de uitgebreide gerechten werd het dessert door de meeste feestgangers niet overgeslagen. De chocolade mousse, ijs en slagroom konden met name de jongeren onder ons goed gebruiken om nadien te verbruiken op de dansvloer. En sommige mensen kunnen echt goed dansen. De live muziek werd verzocht door de van oorsprong uit Eindhoven afkomstige Joël Borelli (www. joelborelli.nl) en zijn band. In twee sessies zorgden zij voor een opperbeste stemming en brachten zij behoorlijk wat mensen in beweging. Verzoeknummers werden geroepen vanuit de zaal en werden vlot opgepikt en vaak kregen de nummers een kleine muzikale twist mee, waardoor het publiek extra genoot. Voor wie de decibellen te veel waren was er in de aangrenzende ruimtes voldoende gelegenheid om een gesprek te voeren met collega s en partners. Tegen 10-en sloot de band af en werd de avond succesvol afgesloten. Met nog een cupcakeje bij de buitengarderobe kon iedereen weer op tijd huiswaarts keren om de volgende dag nog op een normaal tijdstip aan het werk te kunnen. Maart

20 IVaria Atlakvida By: Fer Radstake \\ The lay of Etzel Thor is known for its many connections with Norse mythology. Besides the name Thor itself, the names of the two sub-associations Waldur and ODIN, the names of some committees like the Ivaldi and Kvasir and even things like Thor s file server (Mjölnir) are named after Norse mythological figures and objects. Much of what we know about Norse mythology comes from a number of Icelandic manuscripts, most famously the Poetic and Prose Edda which were compiled in the 13th century (though a number of the poems in them are much older). Something that few people know is that besides mythological stories, these books also feature sagas about ancient Germanic heroes. Many of these are about the Nibelungs, a lineage of Burgundian kings of the migration period (3rd 7th century CE). The Germanic Burgundians settled in the northern West-Roman empire in the early 5th century, until in 436 the Romans grew tired of their constant raids and hired Hunnic mercenaries to drive them out. The ensuing war between the Hunnic and Burgundian empires is immortalized in the well-known Nibelungen sagas, made famous by Richard Wagner s Ring cycle of opera s. Shoulder Cap The Atlakviða is an 11th century Greenlandic poem romanticising the eventual downfall of the Nibelungs. The story could almost be a modern fairytale, if it wasn t for its much grimmer setting and some truly gruesome details... The ancient bards used alliteration rather than rhyme in their poems. As an example of how the original Eddic poems look, I ve written some of the dialogues in an old Germanic verse form, fornyrðislag. The fornyrðislag is the oldest of the Old Norse verse forms, and still very much alike the continental Germanic forms of the migration period. It was in a similar verse form, that the bards at the court of the Burgundian kings Gunnar (Günther) and his brother Högni (Hagen) were singing their poems, when a young man called Knefröd arrived. He introduced himself as a messenger of Attilla (Atli/ Etzel), a great ruler and the husband of Gunnar s sister Gudrun. Knefröd: Come, great warrior, My king awaits! This he asks: An audience with you; Shields he ll give, And slaves and gold To seal our alliance! The sharpest swords, In war no equal, Will be yours! Bron: Wikipedia Gunnar: Hail to Etzel For this offer he makes! Only the treasure Of our own Exceeds the prize Promised by Atli. Högni, my brother, I bid your advice! Högni: What told our sister? She sent us a ring, A wolf s hair with it, a warning it is! Alike the animal Atli will act. He ll slaughter our men, Should we go. Our graves we ll find; Don t go, my friend! But Gunnar was blinded by the prospect of Atli s gift and quickly prepared to leave for Atli s court. Soon Gunnar and Högni were riding through the vast forests of what is now called Germany. Before long, they saw Atli s mighty hall atop a high cliff. Why have you come here, asked Gudrun as soon as her brothers entered the hall. Wasn t the sign I sent you clear enough? Etzel wants your treasure, and he ll stop at nothing to get it! Run, now you still can! Where to? Our horses are tired from the long journey, we can t outrun the Huns for long, observed Gunnar. I d rather fight! added Högni as Atilla s men surrounded the Burgundians, and he charged towards the Huns. It was not until the brothers had killed nine enemies, that they were captured. Atli offered them their lives in exchange for the Burgundian treasure. Gunnar answered coldly: Then kill Högni. Without our treasure, there won t be enough gold for us both to live. Show me Högni s heart, then and only then will I bring you to the treasure. Högni was led away, and was about to be slaughtered, when Atilla remarked: Wait! What if Gunnar deceives us? Bring Gunnar the heart of one of his other companions and tell him it s Hagen s! When Gunnar heard the screaming coming from the castle s dungeons, he immediately saw through the deception.
