6 WOORD VOORAF AN KUN ( 安 坤 ) werd geboren in 1968 in Jiangsu; een provincie die gelegen is langs de oostkust van China. In het zuiden grenst deze, vrijwel vlakke en zeer waterrijke, provincie aan Shanghai. Dwars door het gebied, waar AN KUN als kind opgroeide, stroomt het Grote Kanaal van China. Dit is één van de grootste kanalen ter wereld, waarvan de oudste gedeeltes zijn aangelegd zo n 500 jaar voor onze jaartelling. Zou het de invloed zijn van deze - van noord naar zuid gegraven waterstroom, dat de werken van AN KUN zo delicaat zijn en bijna vloeibaar lijken? Rond zijn vijftiende jaar begon AN KUN met schilderen. Gewoon uit vrijetijdsbesteding en zonder andere reden, dan dat hij zelf genoot van het staan voor een met canvas bespannen spieraam, waarop hij zijn inspiraties en zijn gevoel in beelden kon uiten. Al snel werd in de omgeving van AN KUN opgemerkt dat de jongen een bijzonder, aangeboren talent had. De bijval die AN KUN kreeg, was voor hem de aansporing om zich professioneel te laten scholen aan het Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute en, nadat hij deze opleiding met goed gevolg voltooid had, zijn opleiding tot professioneel kunstschilder voort te zetten aan de Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. betrokken in Beijing waar hij zich - voorlopig zo had hij zich voorgenomen - zou gaan toeleggen op het opnieuw oppakken van zijn leven als kunstschilder. Wetend dat hij twee serieuze schildersopleidingen met goed gevolg voltooid had én vertrouwend op zijn vaardige schildershand, geloofde AN KUN dat hij het eerste jaar kon overleven met het verkopen van zo af en toe een doek. Dat eerste jaar van overleven, pakte echter anders uit. Net zoals de verkoop van zo af en toe een doek. Van een vriend kreeg AN KUN in 2002 de uitnodiging deel te nemen aan de Figure Oil Painting Exhibition in Jiangsu. Deze nieuwe (en destijds nog weinig prestigieuze) tentoonstelling, presenteerde een handvol lokale kunstschilders waarvan de meesten van het kaliber aardig, maar niet goed genoeg. AN KUN echter, presenteerde zijn allernieuwste werk en kreeg direct de ogen van de plaatselijke media op zich gericht. Nog tijdens de expositie werd hem gevraagd om enkele weken later te exposeren in Nanjing, de hoofdstad van de provincie. Wetend dat de wereldstad Nanjing, in de zeer dichtbevolkte én rijke delta van de rivier de Yangtze ligt, was deze uitnodiging niet tegen dovemansoren gezegd. AN KUN voelde in al zijn vezels, dat dit zijn eerste stap op een hoger platform kon zijn. Toch zou artist niet als titel op zijn eerste visitekaartje staan. AN KUN twijfelde en zocht, na succesvol afgestudeerd te zijn, verbeten naar een eigen stijl, een eigen signatuur en vooral naar nieuwe inspiratie voor zijn volgende stap. Die inspiratie vond hij aanvankelijk in een geheel ander beroep: AN KUN werd art and decoration designer bij een grote retailorganisatie in Beijing. Maar terwijl AN KUN zich volop stortte op zijn nieuwe, veeleisende baan, bleef hij schilderen (gelukkig voor ons kunstliefhebbers, kunnen we nu vaststellen). Schilderen was zijn ultieme uitlaatklep om, in de avonduren, tot zichzelf te komen en de dingen die hem bezighielden van zich af te schilderen. In die periode tussen 1997 en voelde AN KUN dat hij meer en meer verstrikt raakte in de hectiek van zijn baan en in de mallemolen van het commerciële Beijing. En met de dag werd zijn weerstand tegen het oprukkende consumentisme en de toenemende koopcultuur die hand over hand toenamen in het alsmaar welvarender China, toe. Toch zou het geen openbare aanklacht worden van AN KUN. Geen schilderijen als betoog. Geen spotprenten, geen cynisme, geen wrok noch haat. Maar een kunstzinnig statement waarvan je als kijker vermoedt dat elk schilderij, elk portret een diepere laag kent. Wat daarna kwam is geschiedenis. Prille geschiedenis wel te verstaan. Je zou bijna kunnen zeggen, dat veel van de schilderijen waarmee AN KUN zijn artist statement destijds in Nanjing maakte, nog nat zijn. Vervolgens ging het snel. Na Nanjing kwam Shanghai. Na Shanghai volgde Beijing. Na Beijing diende Art Basel in Zwitserland zich aan. En in de loop van het jaar 2010 was AN KUN de schilder die met zijn zachte marterharen penseelstreek een indrukwekkend statement maakte. Een geschilderde boodschap die tot ver buiten China doorklinkt. 5

7 INTRODUCTION AN KUN ( 安 坤 ) was born in 1968 in Jiangsu, a province on the east coast of China. this province, which is almost entirely flat and abundant in water, borders Shanghai to the south. China s Grand Canal runs straight through the region where AN KUN grew up as a child. This is one of the largest canals in the world, the oldest parts of which were constructed in around 500 BC. Could it be the influence of this waterway, which runs north-south, that makes AN KUN s works so delicate and appear almost liquid? AN KUN believed that he could survive the first year by selling the occasional painting. However, that first year of survival turned out rather different. As did the selling of the occasional painting. A friend invited AN KUN to take part in the Figure Oil Painting Exhibition in Jiangsu in This new (and at the time still unprestigious) exhibition displayed a handful of local artists, most of them in the nice, but not good enough category. AN KUN started painting around the age of fifteen. Simply to pass the time and for no reason other than that he enjoyed standing in front of a canvas-filled stretcher on which he could express his inspiration and his feelings in pictures. Those around him soon noticed that AN KUN had a remarkable innate talent. The praise that AN KUN enjoyed prompted him to get professional training at Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute and, having successfully completed this course, to continue his training as a professional painter at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Yet his first calling card would not read artist. AN KUN was unsure, and after successfully graduating, he was looking for his own style, his own signature and particularly for fresh inspiration for his next step. He initially found that inspiration in a completely different profession: AN KUN became an art and decoration designer with a large retail organisation in Beijing. But whilst AN KUN threw himself wholeheartedly into his new demanding job, he continued to paint (luckily for us art lovers, we can now conclude). Painting was his ultimate escape valve in order to relax in the evening and paint away his worries. However, AN KUN presented his latest work and immediately became the subject of the local media s focus. Whilst the exhibition was still running, he was asked to exhibit a few weeks later in Nanjing, the provincial capital. Knowing that the metropolis of Nanjing lies in the densely populated and rich delta of the Yangtze river, he leapt at this invitation. AN KUN felt in his bones that this could be the first step to a bigger stage. AN KUN hid himself away in his modest studio for weeks. With great enthusiasm he gathered all his inspiration in order to be able to show what he had to offer as an artist at that exhibition in Nanjing. And more than that, he - the artist AN KUN - would show China in the most charming and subtle way with his new paintings that he believed that the young Chinese generation had become entrapped in materialism, excessive consumerism and brand mania. Yet it would not be a public accusation by AN KUN. No paintings as protest. No caricatures, no cynicism, neither rancour nor hatred. But an artistic statement whereby you as the viewer suspect that every painting, every portrait has a deeper meaning. During that period - between 1997 and AN KUN felt that he was getting more and more ensnared in the hectic nature of his job and in the whirligig of commercial Beijing. And every day his resistance grew to the burgeoning consumerism and rising shopping culture which was advancing rapidly in ever wealthier China. Whilst Beijing showed itself to be booming, AN KUN felt very differently In 2002 AN KUN decided very suddenly to throw in the towel. He informed his employer that he was unable and unwilling to continue contributing to the rat race towards more and he quit his job on the spot. He had by now moved into a small studio in Beijing where - his provisional plan was - he would focus on resuming his life as an artist. Knowing that he had successfully completed two top grade art courses and with faith in his painting skills, What followed is history. Albeit recent history. You could almost say that many of the paintings with which AN KUN made his artist statement in Nanjing back then are still wet. Things then moved swiftly. After Nanjing came Shanghai. Beijing followed Shanghai. After Beijing, Art Basel in Switzerland was the next destination. And in the course of 2010 AN KUN was the artist who with his gentle sable hair brushstrokes made a resounding statement. A painted message which resounds far outside China. 6

9 HET STATEMENT VAN AN KUN Je nodigt als Chinese kunstschilder door de maanden heen al je vrienden in je atelier uit. En je vrienden zijn allemaal van Chinese afkomst. Chinese Young Professionals met een bourgeoisie achtergrond. Keurige dertigers en veertigers. Mooie, weldenkende en intelligente mensen met succesvolle en dynamische carrières, goed gekleed volgens de laatste (Europese) mode, gesierd met dure merkhorloges, mobieltjes, dito tasjes en accessoires en in het bezit van snelle auto s. Eén voor één of per groepje laat je ze in je atelier poseren. Maar in plaats van ze te portretteren zoals ze zijn, dus als Aziaten, verander jij met vrije hand de werkelijkheid. Je verdoezelt hun Chinese uiterlijk en schildert daar zo veel mogelijk Europese kenmerken voor in de plaats. En je doet deze wisseltruc in olieverf zó bekwaam, dat alle geportretteerden achteraf volkomen gelukkig zijn en zichzelf volledig herkennen in de portretten die jij van ze gemaakt hebt. Zie daar: Pretty, Bourgeois Friends van AN KUN. Waarom AN KUN zijn Chinese inner circle afbeeldt als Europese jongelingen, compleet met Westerse trekken, amandelvormige ogen, rossig haar, scherpe neuzen, Westerse kaaklijnen en typische Nederlandse, Scandinavische, Angelsaksische, Germaanse of Latijnse trekken? Het is het statement van AN KUN. Hij laat de kijker in zijn serie Pretty, Bourgeois Friends zien, dat hij met hart en ziel van zijn vrienden houdt. Hij zou geen dag zonder hun vriendschap of aanwezigheid kunnen. Maar AN KUN ziet ook, met pijn in zijn hart, hoe de jonge generatie Chinezen verwesterlijkt. Het consumentisme van zijn leeftijdsgenoten, hun constante en niet aflatende strooptocht naar Westerse statussymbolen, dure merkartikelen en uiterlijke schijnzekerheden, doet hem pijn. Tegelijkertijd ziet AN KUN dat de jonge generatie van succesvolle Chinezen in toenemende mate afscheid neemt van traditionele normen en eeuwenoude Oosterse waarden. Voor AN KUN géén reden om zijn beste vrienden belerend toe te spreken, te kapittelen of te veroordelen. AN KUN is immers schilder en hij wil met zijn schilderijen slechts verbinden en aanleiding geven om wederzijdse meningen met elkaar te delen. En daartoe houdt hij in zijn schilderijen zijn vriendenkring (én alle jonge Chinezen die geconfronteerd worden met een wereld waarin voldoende nooit goed genoeg lijkt te zijn), een spiegel voor. 10 AN KUN S STATEMENT 安 坤 的 声 明 As a Chinese artist, you invite all your friends to your studio over the months. And your friends are all of Chinese origin. Chinese Young Professionals with a bourgeois background. Respectable thirty- and forty-somethings. Beautiful, right-thinking and intelligent people with successful and dynamic careers, welldressed in the latest (European) fashions, adorned with expensive branded watches, mobile phones, similar bags and accessories and owning fast cars. One by one or in groups you have them pose in your studio. But instead of portraying them as they are, so as Asians, you freely alter reality. You obscure their Chinese appearance and replace it with as many European characteristics as possible. And you do this sleight of hand in oils so skilfully that all the subjects are completely happy afterwards and completely recognise themselves in the portraits that you have painted of them. There you have it: the Pretty, Bourgeois Friends of AN KUN. Why does AN KUN depict his Chinese inner circle as European youths, complete with Western features, almond-shaped eyes, sandy hair, sharp noses, Western jaw lines and typically Dutch, Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic or Latin features? It s AN KUN s statement. In his series Pretty, Bourgeois Friends he shows the viewer that he loves his friends dearly. He would not want to miss out on their friendship or presence for a single day. But AN KUN also sees, with pain in his heart, how the young generation of Chinese is being westernised. The consumerism of his peers, their constant and incessant quest for Western status symbols, expensive labels and external comforts upsets him. At the same time AN KUN sees that the young generation of successful Chinese are increasingly abandoning traditional standards and centuriesold Oriental values. These are not grounds for AN KUN to lecture, castigate or condemn his best friends. AN KUN is an artist, after all, and all he wants to do with his paintings is establish a bond and provide a basis for sharing each side s views. And to that end his paintings hold up a mirror to his circle of friends (and all young Chinese people who are confronted with a world where being comfortably off never seems to be enough). 11 Rijk Schipper van Galerie Kunstbroeders in het atelier bij An Kun in Beijing Rijk Schipper of Galerie Kunstbroeders in An Kun s studio in Beijing ONZE ONTMOETING MET AN KUN In deze documentatie tonen wij Galerie Kunstbroeders u met veel genoegen de schilderijen van AN KUN die hij maakte in de serie Pretty, Bourgeois Friends. Voordat u zich echter visueel te goed doet aan deze kunstwerken, delen wij graag met u het moment van onze eerste ontmoeting met AN KUN in zijn atelier in Beijing. Het was een broeierige, warme dag in mei 2014; bewolkt en bedompt zoals Beijing er zo dikwijls kan uitzien en aanvoelen. Samen met de beeldhouwster/schilderes WU JIA HUI (1981/CHINA), waarmee onze galerie inmiddels een jarenlange samenwerking heeft, klopten wij aan op de ijzeren deur van het atelier van AN KUN. De galm van onze laatste klop was nog hoorbaar in het trappenhuis, of de deur ging al open. Voor ons stond AN KUN. Een stevige en rijzige Chinees, midden-veertig en met een vriendelijke glimlach op zijn gezicht. Zo op het eerste oog allerminst een kunstenaar; maar die indruk lieten we snel varen. Als eerste begroette AN KUN ons, zijn Westerse gasten; daarna begroette hij hartelijk zijn collega-kunstenares-vriendin WU JIA HUI, waarmee hij al jaren een hechte vriendschap onderhoudt. De twee wisselden in het Mandarijns ongetwijfeld aardige woorden uit. Ongetwijfeld kent u het gevoel: je komt een basiliek, een concertgebouw, theater of een museum binnen en pats!... je bent als door de bliksem getroffen overweldigd door de omgeving, door de sfeer, de sereniteit, het licht, de attributen of de inrichting. Dat hadden wij ook toen wij ons entree maakten in het atelier van AN KUN. Niet wetend waar te kijken uit beleefdheid uiteraard ook telkens naar de kunstenaar die tegen ons sprak schoten onze blikken alle kanten op en vielen onze monden open. Onze hoofden draaiden als kinderkopjes in een snoepwinkel van doek naar doek. Van links, naar de zojuist in potloodschets opgezette eerste ideeën, naar rechts, waar vier gereedstaande werken stonden die de wereld in zouden trekken. In elke hoek, tegen elke wand, op elke schildersezel, stond het fijnste snoepwerk dat onze volledige aandacht opeiste en onze devotie verdiende. AN KUN lachte alleen maar bescheiden om ons priemende aanwijzen van de werken, terwijl wij kijk deze! en moet je dit zien! naar elkaar uitriepen. Drie uur en vele kopjes Chinese thee later, gaven wij AN KUN de hand. Wij wisten dat wij vanaf dat moment een gemeenschappelijke toekomst zouden ingaan. 10

12 OUR MEETING WITH AN KUN In this catalogue we - Galerie Kunstbroeders - are delighted to present you with the paintings by AN KUN which he created as part of the Pretty, Bourgeois Friends series. However, before you enjoy the sight of these artworks, we would like to share with you the memory of our first meeting with AN KUN in his studio in Beijing. It was a muggy, hot day in May 2014; overcast and stuffy like Beijing can so often look and feel. Together with the sculptor/ painter WU JIA HUI (born 1981/CHINA), with whom our gallery has had a relationship for years, we knocked on the iron door of AN KUN s studio. The echo of our final knock was still resounding in the stairwell when the door opened. In front of us stood AN KUN. A tall and sturdy Chinese man, mid-forties and with a friendly smile. At first glance he does not look like an artist; but we soon abandoned that impression. AN KUN first welcomed us, his Western guests; then he affectionately greeted his fellow artist and friend WU JIA HUI, with whom he has had a close friendship for years. The two undoubtedly exchanged warm words in Mandarin. You are almost certainly familiar with the feeling: you enter a basilica, a concert hall, a theatre or a museum and bang!... as if struck by lightning, you are overwhelmed by your surroundings, by the atmosphere, the serenity, the light, the features or the interior. That s what happened to us when we entered AN KUN s studio. Not knowing where to look - out of politeness also looking regularly at the artist who was talking to us - we gazed in all directions and we gaped. Our heads turned from painting to painting like children in a sweet shop. From left, at the recently pencil-sketched first drafts, to the right, where four finished works were waiting to go out into the world. In every corner, against every wall, on every easel, stood the finest delights that demanded our full attention and merited our devotion. AN KUN merely smiled modestly at us vigorously pointing at the works, as we called to one another look at this! and you need to see this one!. Three hours and many cups of Chinese tea later, we shook hands with AN KUN. 15 STIJL EN ACHTERGROND VAN PRETTY, BOURGEOIS FRIENDS Als kunstschilder zoekt AN KUN altijd naar de transparantie in zijn werk. Verwacht van hem geen robuust en pasteus verfgebruik, geen ferm aangezette vlakken of lijnen, maar slechts dunne, vloeibare lagen waaraan deze grootmeester genoeg heeft om zijn verhaal te vertellen. Een verhaal overigens, dat bij AN KUN altijd meer is dan zomaar een mooi soloportret of een mooi groepje mensen bij elkaar. In feite begon AN KUN reeds in zijn vroegere werk (en wij bedoelen hier zijn in de negentiger jaren geschilderde Zen Series) met het portretteren van breekbare, magere modellen. Hoewel hij de abstracte extremen uit deze eerste werken grotendeels liet varen, zien we in Pretty, Bourgeois Friends veel van deze eerdere beeldtaal en stijl terug. AN KUN creëert in zijn eerste werken in de serie Pretty, Bourgeois Friends strakke, langgerekte en breekbare gezichten, waarin hij op subtiele wijze de aan zichzelf toegekende status van zijn modellen ontneemt. Als het ware pelt AN KUN de uiterlijke laklagen van zijn Chinese modellen af. Schone schijn lijkt voor AN KUN niet te bestaan. In tegenstelling tot veel van zijn Chinese tijdgenoten die zich in hun werk vaak geroepen voelen tot scherpe kritische beschouwingen gecombineerd met politieke elementen, geeft AN KUN de voorkeur zijn penseel te gebruiken om zijn modellen én de kijker het gevoel van rust en mededogen te geven, waardoor zijn statement aan kracht lijkt toe te nemen. 16 THE STYLE AND BACKGROUND OF PRETTY, BOURGEOIS FRIENDS Pretty, Bourgeois Friends 的 风 格 与 背 景 As an artist AN KUN always strives for transparency in his work. Do not expect any robust and dense use of paint, no firmly defined areas or lines, but only the thin, fluid layers which are all this master needs to tell his story. A story which, incidentally, is always more with AN KUN than just an attractive solo portrait or a nice group of people together. In fact AN KUN started producing portraits of fragile, skinny subjects in his earlier work (by which we mean his Zen Series, painted in the 1990s). Although he largely abandoned the abstract extremes of these first works, we do see a lot of this visual language and style echoed in Pretty, Bourgeois Friends. In his first works in the Pretty, Bourgeois Friends series AN KUN creates gaunt, stretched and fragile faces, in which he subtly deprives his subjects of their self-assigned status. AN KUN peels off the external layers of varnish of his Chinese subjects, as it were. Glamour does not appear to exist for AN KUN. De weg die AN KUN inslaat met zijn serie Pretty, Bourgeois Friends, zet hij in aangepaste beeldtaal, vorm en op grotere doeken voort in afzonderlijke portretten ten voeten uit van zijn vrienden. Met deze schilderijen* maakt de schilder een volgende stap in zijn oeuvre. In dit werk is de verwesterlijking van de geportretteerden lichter van aard; soms zelfs slechts subtiel aanwezig. Diverse modellen vertonen androgyne trekken en het kleurgebruik wordt successievelijk in zijn latere en grotere schilderijen geprononceerder. Door het gehele model dikwijls te plaatsen in een metaforisch kader (en daarmee zijn werken een extra dimensie en verhaal te geven), breekt AN KUN met dit werk door bij het grote publiek. Waren er mogelijk kunstliefhebbers die de virtuositeit van AN KUN nog niet herkenden in zijn eerdere werken, ook zij moesten nu erkennen dat AN KUN een klasse apart is. *) Ook van deze later daterende schilderijen heeft Galerie Kunstbroeders werken kunnen bemachtigen, die wij als extra kersjes op de taart tijdens de eerste expositie van AN KUN in Nederland ook tentoonstellen. 19 PRETTY, BOURGEOIS FRIENDS. & MORE! 更 多 关 于 Pretty, Bourgeois Friends AN KUN continues on the path that he has taken with his series Pretty, Bourgeois Friends - in a modified visual language and shape and on larger canvases - in individual full-length portraits. With these paintings* the artist is making the next step in his oeuvre. The westernisation of the subjects is less intense in this work; sometimes it is only subtly present. Various subjects display androgynous features and the use of colour gradually becomes more pronounced in his later and larger paintings.
