2 4 December The first six month of 2008 Drive Against Malaria (DAM) has led a powerful antimalaria campaign in Cameroon. In November 2008, they have reached already a positive milestone. Julia Samuel: "Thanks to the use of impregnated mosquito nets DAM has distributed, there have been, in a half year, scarcely any malaria infections. The result in three mountain villages is a purchase of the number malaria-infections of only eager 95%. That is really fantastic news!" Since March 2008 DAM optimize the primary malaria health care and the fight against malaria with a total approach for the local population in the forest area. Part of this is the free distribution of Long Lasting Impregnated Mosquito Nets. These nets are the most effective prevention against the infectious disease. The spread of the nets has formed the highest priority in the South Westerly coast territory where malaria is endemic. Julia Samuel and Village Chief Camp 1 Mr Devine In the mountain towns Chopfarm, Bimbia Camp 1 and Bimbia Dikolo where more than 600 families are at risk. Furthermore DAM gave education about what causes malaria, the prevention, how to diagnose and cure with the effective combination therapy. "In the first half of this year we have spend a tremendously lot of time and energy in education and the repeating monitoring. Together with the village leaders we checked if everybody sleeps under a neat", said Julia. "The past month we visited again the mountain towns and spoke with the village leaders. It tremendously is to see, that the prevention did the job, and since then yet scarcely malaria-infections has been seen. The villagers were appalling cheerfully to see us.they approached us cheering and told us enthusiastic how considerably well the nets prevents malaria.

3 The next step is to set up of a permanent health post in this mountain territory. Spear point that is diagnostics, the expanding of education over prevention, the impregnatie of curetains as an extra barrier and free medication. The coming months DAM will expand the examination of all other supported towns to see how the situation is and extend the target area. Annually more than 400 million men become infected with malaria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) annually more than a million people die from the illness. Most dead fall under young children, because they have not built up yet any immunities against this devastating illness. Also pregnant women belongs to the most vulnerable group. Especially in Africa we find the most victims because the health care is poor.

4 Succes Drive Against Malaria in Kameroen: Afname malaria-infecties van maar liefst 95 % Kameroen, 4 december- Versie: Nederlands Dit voorjaar heeft Drive Against Malaria (DAM) een krachtige anti-malaria campagne in Kameroen gevoerd. In november 2008 hebben ze daarmee al een positieve mijlpaal bereikt. Julia Samuel: Door het gebruik van geïmpregneerde muskietennetten, zijn er in een half jaar nauwelijks meer infecties voorgekomen. Het resultaat in drie bergdorpen is een afname van het aantal malaria-infecties van maar liefst 95%. Dat is toch fantastisch nieuws! Sinds maart 2008 steunt DAM de lokale bevolking met een totaalaanpak om de primaire malaria gezondheidszorg in berggebieden te optimaliseren. Onderdeel hiervan is de vrije distributie van Long Last Impregnated Mosquito Netten. Deze netten zijn de meest effectieve preventie tegen de infectieziekte. De verspreiding daarvan heeft de hoogste prioriteit in met name het Zuid West kustgebied waar malaria epidemische vormen heeft aangenomen. Met name in de bergdorpen Chopfarm, Bimbia Camp 1 en Bimbia Dikolo waar ruim 600 families risico lopen.

5 Daarnaast geeft DAM educatie over oorzaken van malaria, de preventie, hoe te diagnosticeren en genezing met de effectieve combinatie therapie. In de eerste helft van dit jaar hebben we enorm veel tijd en energie gestoken in educatie en de herhaalde monitoring. Samen met de dorpshoofden is gecontroleerd of iedereen ook daadwerkelijk onder een net slaapt, vertelt Julia. We hebben afgelopen maand wederom de bergdorpen bezocht en met de dorpshoofden gesproken. Het is geweldig om te constateren, dat er sindsdien nog nauwelijks malariainfecties zijn voorgekomen. Mr. Devine, village leader, Camp 1.4

6 De dorpelingen waren ontzettend blij ons te zien. Ze kwamen ons juichend tegemoet en vertelden enthousiast hoe belangrijk de netten zijn ter voorkoming van malaria. De volgende stap is het opzetten van een permanente hulppost in dit berggebied. Speerpunt daar is de diagnostiek, het uitbreiden van educatie over preventie, de impregnatie van gordijnen als extra barrière, en gratis medicatie. De komende maanden gaat Drive Against Malaria alle andere ondersteunde dorpen visiteren en de situatie onderzoeken én zal uitbreiden met nieuwe doelgebieden. Jaarlijks worden ruim 400 miljoen mensen besmet met malaria. Volgens de World Health Organization (WHO) overlijden jaarlijks ruim een miljoen mensen aan de ziekte. De meeste doden vallen onder jonge kinderen, omdat die nog geen immuniteit tegen deze verwoestende ziekte hebben opgebouwd. Ook zwangere vrouwen behoren tot de meest kwetsbare groep.
