The group, which is managed by Hamburg ship owner Erck Rickmers, paid out euro75m ($93.4M) for last year. The windfall profits generated on the containership charter market also enabled the company to make substantial unscheduled debt repayments of euro38m. Nordcapital was able to raise euro182m from private investors for new closed shipping funds set up in The figure was boosted by a large multi-ship fund (Global II) developed in collaboration with Deutsche Bank, Nordcapital s director of communications, Dr Tino Drenger, told Fairplay. We expect to collect more than euro200m from private investors this year, he said. The company has already placed two 8,200 TEU containerships and is currently preparing another smaller fund. 3 Rescue tug collides with adrift boat Two boats collided near Point Defiance Tuesday night. Passengers on a 22-foot recreational vessel contacted the Coast Guard when they were adrift in Puget Sound with a dead battery, according to the Coast Guard. They used flashlights to get the attention of a tugboat heading toward them but apparently their signals didn't work. About 8:45 p.m. the two vessels collided, and the three people on the passenger boat jumped into the water, Coast Guard officials said. The tugboat retrieved the three from the water. Nobody was hurt, the Coast Guard said Storm could force Canadian aid ships into port Canadian ships headed to the U.S. Gulf Coast to deliver aid to the hurricane-devastated region might have to duck into port or head further out into the Atlantic to avoid a storm gathering strength off Florida. The fleet navigating officer on board HMCS Athabaskan said Wednesday that the convoy of vessels was assessing the situation in northern Florida, where the tropical storm Ophelia was moving slowly and erratically but carrying winds of 80 km/h. "We've come up with four viable options that we're weighing right now," Lt. Todd Kennedy said in an interview from the ship as it came within 240 kilometres east of New York City. "They will keep the ship safe, be it go to a port to take shelter or deviate far from the plan and give a wide berth to the hurricane." Kennedy was closely monitoring the storm, which some computer models have shown moving to the east and away from the coast, while others have it going west, closer to shore. Ophelia, the 15th named storm of the season, was centred 135 kilometres east-northeast of Cape Canaveral midday Wednesday. It was moving to the northwest at just five km/h. He said that if the ships chose not to go into port, they would likely move about 360 to 480 kilometres east of the system where they would experience higher winds and waves of two to three metres. "You can expect that the winds are going to pick up, the seas are going to pick up and it might get a little uncomfortable, a little bumpy, but that's normal," he said on board the lead ship in the mission, dubbed Operation Unison. Kennedy, 27, said he couldn't reveal which port they were considering heading to, but said it was "safe and close." Steve Miller of the Canadian Hurricane Centre said he expected the storm to gain hurricane strength by Friday, which could cause problems for the fleet. "I bet the wave heights are going to be a factor on their trip for sure," he said in Halifax. "They're going to be going through some rough seas." The ships - a destroyer, two frigates and a coast guard icebreaker - were expected to arrive in the hurricane-ravaged region on the weekend, but might not get there until later if Ophelia lingers off the eastern seaboard and affects their plans. 4 The convoy, which includes three Sea Kings and 1,000 personnel, set sail Tuesday from Halifax after crews spent the holiday weekend loading tonnes of supplies on to the vessels. They're expecting to anchor off the coast of Louisiana and ferry the goods ashore via small boats and helicopters. Crews plan to help in the broad reconstruction effort, but will also likely be called on to recover some of the thousands of bodies many fear will be uncovered as floodwaters recede. Kennedy said the crews spent the day doing an inventory of their supplies and running through some critical stress training to prepare for the mission. Memorial service for ship victims The families of 44 people lost at sea when their ship sank are to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. Bulk carrier MV Derbyshire, built on Teesside, sank in the South China Sea on 9 September 1980, caught up in a severe tropical storm. Those killed came from all over the country, many from Merseyside, as well as Redcar and Darlington. The victims' families will meet in Liverpool on Saturday for the annual service of commemoration. The 169,000-tonne ore and oil bulk carrier sank in the Pacific Ocean south of Japan when she was hit by Typhoon Orchid in An inquiry in 2000 ruled that a hatch cover had failed to withstand the pressure caused by huge waves which buffeted the 160,000-tonne bulk carrier. But further research showed the ship got into trouble because the waves were exactly the same length as the vessel. The findings followed two inquiries which waded through 137,000 photographs and 200 hours of video footage shot around the wreckage. Daardoor maakte het schip water.,,desondanks slaagde de bemanning erin het schip naar de oever de manoeuvreren'', zei een woordvoerder van de Duitse rivierpolitie. Daar liep het vaartuig aan de grond. De passagiers en de 24 leden tellende bemanning zijn met boten aan land gebracht. Zij hebben de reis langs de Rijn met bussen voortgezet. The three ships, HMS Norfolk, Grafton, and Marlborough (pictured above) should be delivered to the Chilean Navy around the end of 2008, said Lord Drayson, Minister for Defence Procurement. He said after negotiations with the Chilean government and the shipbuilder BAE Systems PLC all three parties 'are now in a position to sign an agreement for the transfer of the ships to Chile'. In July 2004 the then Defence Secretary, Geoff Hoon, announced a reduction in destroyer and frigate numbers to 25 from 31. Chile has also bought four Dutch frigates to renovate its naval fleet. Submarine given back to Royal Navy A yellow submarine reeled in by island fishermen more than three months ago has been collected by the Royal Navy - along with a specially-bottled case of whisky to mark the occasion. HMS Blythe arrived at Islay off the west coast of Scotland to retrieve its remotely-operated vehicle (ROV). The 10ft-long craft, which weighs 0.84 tons (850kg) and is used to detect mines, had become a major tourist attraction on the island. To commemorate the event, a local distillery has produced 12,000 bottles of Yellow Submarine whisky and presented a case to the captain of the minesweeper. The unmanned submarine was found by John Baker when he was fishing for lobsters in May, floating about three miles from the Mull of Oa. The vessel was kept on display in the garden of his brother-in-law Harold Hastie, who helped him bring it to dry land. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) at Faslane Naval Base at first denied that the ROV was one of their vessels. But the Navy later admitted that the submarine - which had MoD stamped on the side along with serial numbers - was its property. Father-of-two Mr Hastie, 51, who lives at Port Ellen on the island, said: "The submarine has caused a lot of excitement here. I've had a constant procession of tourists from as far afield as Sydney and Seattle in my garden getting their photo taken beside it. I'm quite sad to see it go, actually." The owner of Bruichladdich distillery on the island said he expected the bottles of Yellow Submarine, a 14-year-old single malt, to fly off the shelves. The small independent whisky-maker hit the headlines in September 2003 when it emerged US spies had been monitoring the plant for weapons of mass destruction. Bruichladdich, founded in 1881, rushed out a special bottling called WMD (Whisky of Mass Distinction) to mark the event. The vessels with modern equipment were produced by a Singaporean company "President Shipyard." "Biuy Kazakhstan" specializing in transportation of cargos for oil fields ordered these new shallow water tug-boats. "Biuy Kazakhstan" plans to continue construction of sea tug-boats and new generation speed-boats on shipbuilding ventures from different countries to work in the Caspian basin. The strike, scheduled to last until Monday morning, came after last month's announcement by the company that it would outsource some operations, cut its work force in Helsinki by more than a quarter, or 120 workers, and move the company headquarters to the southwestern city of Turku. Aker Finnyards president Yrjo Julin said the strike was illegal, according to the Dow Jones news agency. Aker has said it will no longer build cruiseships in Helsinki, concentrating instead on ferries. It has said 200 new employees would be recruited for the Turku yard by the end of the year. INP wins three ethylene carriers An unspecified Japanese shipowner has ordered three 10,000 cbm ethylene carriers from INP Heavy Industries in South Korea at a cost of $135 million. They will be built to ice class specification and will be chartered to a European shipping company. Zhejiang shiprepair to be operational Zhoushan Wanbang Yongyue Shipyard in China will be operational soon following government approval for the building of the ship repair facility at a cost of $37.8 million. The shipyard has a 300,000DWT, a 200,000DWT dry dock and an outfitting quay. Dongfeng Shipyard in China clinched nine 200TEU container ships from a shipping company in the Cosco group. Reederei Thomas Schulte Purchased Boxships Reederei Thomas Schulte purchased two 2,800 TEU vessels from E.R. Schiffahrt. still under construction at Hyundai Mipo (South Korea). Reported price is around $50 mn each, according to Dyna Liners. Battle for control of Novoship A meeting of the directors of Russian tanker operator Novoship revealed that faction-fighting has broken out over who will control the company. As the Russian government is the controlling shareholder, officials of different ministries and transport companies are now involved in behind-the-scenes bidding for an asset currently worth more than $1.4Bn, with after-tax profits running at a record $176M in the first half of this year. 10 both of them currently at Sovcomflot, have been accepted by the government. According to a transport ministry statement, a special shareholders meeting has been called for 14 October to decide whether to replace Izmailov. Deputy transport minister Alexander Misharin, chairman of the board, has ordered Izmailov and other company executives not to speak to the press. Despite pressure to do so, the board decided not to reverse a transaction, arranged early this year by Izmailov, when the last big minority shareholding in Novoship, held by the Akropol Bank group, was sold to Intrigue Shipping, a Novoship affiliate controlling Novoship s Liberian flagged fleet. That management buyback, which blocked rival bidders, is estimated to have cost $160M. Lobbying to reverse the deal has been intense since then, and in May prosecutors were sent to Novoship offices to investigate its records; they found no wrongdoing. Stolt Offshore S.A. Awarded $280 million Deepwater Moho-Bilondo Project Stolt Offshore S.A. announced that it had been awarded a contract valued at approximately $280 million by Total E&P Congo for the Moho-Bilondo deepwater field development offshore Congo. The contract is for the engineering, procurement, supply and installation of umbilicals and flowlines. The scope of work will include installation and pre-commissioning of approximately 88 kilometres of flowlines and oil and gas export pipelines, as well as including 18 kilometres of flexible flowlines, and a well control umbilical, in water depths of up to 800 metres. The procurement and engineering phase has already started. NKT Flexibles I/S, a Stolt Offshore joint venture company, will manufacture and supply the dynamic flexible risers and the static flexible lines. Offshore installation is scheduled to commence in 2007 through to early 2008 and the principal vessels involved in installation will be the Seaway Polaris and Seaway Falcon. The move divests the Australian towage operator of its last non-core business. Northland, 55% owned by Adsteam, has sold the Anchorage-based marine fuel distributor Yukon Fuel Company and Service Oil & Gas, a distributor based in Glennallen, Alaska. Adsteam, which announced its intention to divest itself of non-core operations in May 2003, said the final proceeds from the Northland sale depended on the level of working capital at closing, "but are expected to approximate book value". Money from the sale will be used to retire Adsteam Marine's debt. On 25 August Adsteam Marine reported a net profit for of A$23.4M ($18M). 11 India's Surrendra Overseas has increased its deadweight tonnage by acquiring two bigger bulkers. The owner said the vessels are an unnamed 1990-built, 71,000-dwt panamax and a 2002-built 52,454-dwt ultra handymax. It has boosted its tonnage by 51% with the deal, to about 363 th. dwt. The vessels to join the company's fleet by the end of October this year. Earlier this year, Surrendra sold the 73 th. -dwt bulker "Shalin" (built 1989) to an undisclosed buyer for more than $19m. It has 5 other bulkers, according to Tradewinds. B.C. Ferries buys vessel from Utah Help is on the way for frustrated customers of B.C. Ferry Services Inc. -- the corporation is buying a used ferry from landlocked Utah to put into service next summer. The state's Department of Transportation has sold the 26-car MV John Atlantic Burr for $200,000 US. "We'll have a ship that's virtually new at the end for a quarter the price of a new ferry," said Mike Corrigan, executive vice-president at B.C. Ferry Services. "It's in unbelievably good shape," he added, due to the freshwater environment and the dry climate of southeastern Utah. The Burr will make a difference on minor routes in the Gulf Islands, said Corrigan. It's the first increase in the ferry fleet for years. "When we have a big long weekend we can throw that in to break the back of the traffic," he said. It could also be assigned to regular service and replace one of the corporation's older ferries, which would become a backup vessel for busy days. For the trip north, the 20-year-old vessel will be sliced in half lengthwise to make two pieces almost seven metres wide each, an easier load for a heavy-lift transport company to handle. Total weight to be trucked is about 330 tonnes. "Those big rockets they use at Cape Canaveral, they can move from coast to coast," said Ralph Marwood, the Victoria-based naval architect of MDA Marine Design Associates Inc. who designed the Burr two decades ago. The vessel will go into dry dock for a $4.5-million refit. Corrigan said the Burr needs major work for service in B.C. waters. It has no toilets, passenger cabins or passenger evacuation system. It also needs more sophisticated equipment on the bridge. B.C. Ferries is thinking of widening the vessel to carry nine more cars, a procedure once common with ferries here. Some, like the Queen of Saanich, were widened and lengthened to increase car capacity. "Up here that kind of thing is fairly simple, if it's well-planned," said Marwood. The Burr is a virtual sister ship of the B.C. ferry Klitsa, which travels to Thetis and Kuper islands, and was designed here by MDA, along with the corporation's other K-class vessels, Kahloke and Kwuna, all built in B.C. Named for a Mormon pioneer, the Burr was built in pieces in Salt Lake City, then trucked south to Lake Powell for assembly, a process that Marwood supervised. It used to operate on a five-kilometre crossing of the big reservoir on the Colorado River between Bullfrog Basin and Halls Crossing, Utah. PSi-Daily maritime press clippings Page 11 9/9/2005

12 The purchase of another vessel, even a small one for the corporation's minor routes, will be welcome news for patrons who had to endure a summer season of breakdowns, long waits and even a vessel running aground. Buying used ferries out of country is not new. The Queen of the North, now operating on the North Coast, was built in Germany in 1969 and Queen of Chilliwack was built in Norway in "Some people might say, 'how come you don't do this with bigger ferries?' The world would be a simpler place if that were possible," said Corrigan. Only a few ferry services use the kind of big, double-ended vessels that B.C. uses, and no surplus vessels of the right age and condition are available, he said. Tugboat for Port Fleet JSC On September the Leningrad Shipyard Pella launched the tugboat "Sestroretsk" built to the order of the Port Fleet JSC. According to the company's press service, the construction is worth 3 mn euros. The tugboat will join the company's fleet during September. This is the sixth and the last tugboat of the series. "Sestroretsk" is to be deployed at the oil terminals, in Vysotsk in particular. The tugboat is equipped with the 2 engines of Caterpillar Co. The speed of the vessel is knots. New World Alliance Signs Up The members of the New World Alliance (NWA) boxship group have signed up for another five years, ending speculation over Hyundai Merchant Marine's (HMM) participation. HMM had been linked to a move to the rival Grand Alliance grouping as a replacement for P&O Nedlloyd, which has been bought by AP Moller-Maersk. But now NWA members APL, HMM and MOL have committed to each other until December HMM was said to be frustrated at the slower fleet expansion plans of its partners. But the lines said the extension was strategically important, allowing them to focus on long-term planning of resources. The group continues to expand in the major East-West trades. "Our relationship over the past eight years has enabled us to build a strong reputation for delivering a high quality product across the markets where we co-operate," they said. NWA operates 11 fixed-day weekly services in the transpacific trade and four weekly services in the Asia- Europe trade, plus three fixed-day services in the transatlantic trade. The Grand Alliance is NYK Line, Hapag-Lloyd and OOCL, with MISC contributing to the Asia- Europe trade. Hierop zijn gelijk de reddingboten van Vlieland, Terschelling en Texel, evenals helikopters van de Koninklijke Marine, Koninklijke Luchtmacht en de offshore SAR gealarmeerd. Het Kustwachtcentrum heeft een zoekgebied gemaakt en later hebben de zoekende eenheden het stoffelijk overschot van de vermiste F-16 vlieger geborgen. De deelnemende eenheden aan de zoekaktie waren: 2 reddingboten KNRM Vlieland, 2 reddingboten KNRM Texel, 2 reddingboten KNRM Terschelling, helikopters van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht, Koninklijke Marine, Offshore SAR en de Belgische Luchtmacht. Westplein 5b 3016 BM Rotterdam The Netherlands Telephone: Telefax: Reddingsmuseum Abraham Fock In het reddingsmuseum "Abraham Fock" wordt informatie verstrekt over het reddingswerk op Ameland vanaf Aan de Oranjeweg 18 te Hollum was tot 1988 het Reddingsstation Hollum van de Koninklijke Noord- en Zuidhollandse Reddingsmaatschappij (KNZHRM) gevestigd. Van daaruit werd de paardenreddingboot door tien paarden naar zee gebracht. In 1988 is in de Ballumerbocht een nieuwe reddingsboot gestationeerd: de Johannes Frederik. Het gevolg daarvan was, dat de paardenreddingboot zou verdwijnen. Dit mocht volgens vele Amelanders niet gebeuren! Er werd een Stichting Paardenreddingboot Ameland opgericht. Met de gemeente Ameland werd afgesproken dat de gemeente de boot en het boothuis van de Reddingsmaatschappij zou overnemen en aan de Stichting in gebruik zou geven. Toen de paardenreddingboot op 17 september 1988 uit dienst werd gesteld, heeft de Stichting via de gemeente de boot en het boothuis in beheer gekregen. Daarmede is voorkomen dat een traditie van 160 jaar voorgoed zou verdwijnen. De Stichting heeft twee doelstellingen: - het geven van demonstraties met de paardenreddingboot "Abraham Fock" en - het voor publiek openstellen van het boothuis. Dus daardoor kunnen bezoekers van Ameland, ook na 1988, nu nog steeds het unieke "lanceren" van de reddingsboot zien. Daarnaast is het boothuis uitgegroeid tot het reddingsmuseum "Abraham Fock". In het museum kunnen de bezoekers aan de hand van foto's, oorkondes en vele voorwerpen kennis maken met de geschiedenis, sinds 1824, van het reddingswezen op Ameland. 18 opkomst van het reddingswezen en de ontwikkeling in de loop der jaren. Vanzelfsprekend krijgt de paardenreddingboot daarbij veel aandacht. De reddingsboot "Abraham Fock" is ook in het museum te bezichtigen! Interessant zijn ook de vele overgebleven voorwerpen van schepen die voor de kust van Ameland zijn vergaan. In het museum is eveneens een videozaal, waar diverse films over de paardenreddingboot getoond worden. Bij het museum staat de oude koepel van de vuurtoren van Hollum. De vuurtoren speelt een belangrijke rol in de scheepvaart als baken en tegenwoordig als communicatiemedium. Demonstratie paardenreddingboot Het is een unieke belevenis de paardenreddingboot vanuit het reddingsbootmuseum met denderend geweld uit te zien gaan. Na het sein van de stoomfluit verzamelen bemanning en voerlieden zich in het boothuis. De reddingsboot wordt door tien paarden naar het strand gebracht waarna de boot door de paarden in het water wordt getrokken. De samenwerking tussen mens en paard bij het te water laten van de reddingsboot is een ervaring die u lang bij zal blijven. Dit boeiend schouwspel geeft een impressie van het reddingswerk zoals dat tot 1988 op Ameland werd uitgevoerd. Naast demonstraties op vaste tijden, is het ook mogelijk op andere tijden de boot uit te laten varen. Uiteraard zijn hieraan kosten verbonden en gaat dit op afspraak.
