3 Introductie In mijn afstudeerscriptie deed ik onderzoek naar de relatie tussen de sociale norm en genderneutrale mode. Vanuit dit onderzoek zijn er twee relaties geconstateerd. Namelijk de trend-relatie, waarin mode invloed heeft op de sociale norm. In deze relatie heeft mode invloed op de sociale norm, maar uitsluitend op het modische aspect van de sociale norm en wordt de grotere boodschap niet perse duidelijk. De tweede relatie die geconstateerd is, is de bewustwordings-relatie. De geschiedenis heeft laten zien dat bewustwording van onderwerpen invloed kan hebben op de sociale norm en door deze veranderingen laat de mode zich inspireren. Tijdens de jaren 60 vond er een culturele en seksuele revolutie plaats en ontstonden er verandering in de sociale norm, de modewereld heeft zich hierdoor laten inspireren en bood ook broeken aan voor vrouwen en zijn sindsdien ook maatschappelijk geaccepteerd om voor vrouwen te dragen. Volgens deze laatste relatie, de bewustwordingsrelatie is de grotere boodschap ook doorgedrongen in de maatschappij. Product keuze Door dit gegeven heb ik gekozen om als afstudeer product een artikel te schrijven voor online medium Upworthy. Met als doel, de bewustwordings-relatie te bevorderen. Voor het schrijven van dit artikel heb ik geprobeerd de opgedane informatie uit mijn afstudeerscriptie te vertalen naar een artikel die interessant is voor Upworthy en hun publiek. Hiermee wil ik laten zien dat ik mijn onderzoek kan vertalen naar een klein artikel, toegespitst op het gekozen platform. 3

5 1.1 Algemene informatie Wat: online platform voor onderwerpen die er toe doen Website: Eigenaar: Cloud Tiger Media, Inc Oprichters: Eli Pariser en Peter Koechley Bezoekers: gemiddeld 50 miljoen per maand Gevestigd in New York, New York Opgericht in Doel Het doel van Upworthy wordt direct duidelijk door de tagline: Things that matter. Pass m on. De website van Upworthy schrijft dat zij veel aandacht geven aan onderwerpen die er toe doen. De curators zoeken het internet af om zinvolle media te vinden. 1.3 Ontstaan Upworthy s ontstaan is te danken aan het feit dat mensen minder tijd besteden aan kranten en meer tijd besteden aan news feeds. Volgens hen gaan de verhalen die van het grootste belang zijn voor de wereld, verloren. Zo stelt Upworthy dat het onderwerp klimaatverandering evenveel aandacht krijgt in news feeds als acteurs, selfies en filmpjes van katten. Volgens hen is er een wedstrijd om aandacht aan de gang, waardoor zij hebben gekozen voor een platform dat aan de hand van korte artikelen, filmpjes of beeld, verhalen verteld die er toe doen. Onderwerpen die er volgens Upworthy toe doen zijn, als eerste genoemd, ensuring that women are seen as full human being, daarnaast; gaten prikken in de overtuiging dat een klein percentage van de bevolking alle dingen zouden moeten bezitten; verzekeren dat de aarde ook de volgende eeuw meemaakt; en het bevechten van pogingen om het internet minder vrij en belemmerend dan dat het bedoeld was. Upworthy verdeelt hun nieuws in zeventien verschillende divisies, namelijk: community, diversity, economy, entertainment & culture, environment, gender, guns & crime, health, immigration, inspirational, international, LGBTQQ, military, parenting, politics, science & technology en spanish. 5

7 1.4 Manier van communiceren Upworthy plaatst kleine artikelen, variërend van 100 tot 500 woorden. De tekst zelf is gemakkelijk te begrijpen en de schrijfstijl simpel. Upworthy is een Engels platform en plaatst uitsluitend artikelen in het Engels. De geschreven artikelen worden sterk gemaakt aan de hand van beeld, wat beiden filmpjes, foto s en illustraties kunnen zijn. Deze beelden hebben vaak een sarcastische, bijdehantere ondertoon. 1.5 Motivatie Er is gekozen om een artikel te schrijven voor Upworthy, doordat zij aangeven nieuws te willen delen dat er volgens hun toe doet. Gender is volgens hen een van de belangrijkste onderwerpen en ontvangt van hun veel aandacht. Over gender worden artikelen in alle soort en maten geschreven van genderstereotypering in speelgoed tot een militaire game waarin vrouwelijke avatars verkracht worden en van kinderboeken die zeggen bedoeld te zijn voor jongens tot liedjes waarin stereotypering en vooral seksualisering plaatsvond. Kortom, zij gaan in op vele onderwerpen waarin het gender probleem aan de orde komt. Bij het onderwerp gender stond er nog geen artikel online over mode met betrekking tot gender. Waardoor het interessant werd bevonden om het mode in relatie met gender te introduceren. Het doel van het geschreven artikel is een introductie te maken van de impact van mode op gender. In deze introductie is zoveel mogelijk geprobeerd om uitsluitend te informeren, zonder daarbij gebruik te maken van een mening. Zodat de lezer zelf kan bepalen wat hij van het onderwerp vindt en daardoor ook de discussie open laat. Aangezien Upworthy niet alleen gaat om het delen van nieuws dat er toe doet, maar ook een platform is om met elkaar in discussie te gaan. 7

9 2.1 Artikel in tekst The impact of fashion on gender We all want to express who we are or who we want to be. Goffman wrote convincingly about impression management and explains how in social interaction we are busy reading others when simultaneously they try to obtain information about you. Fashion, or clothing in general, is a very important aspect of impressions since it influences a persons appearance, which creates the first impression. We all, subconsciously or not, dress to standards developed by social norms. But what happens when what we want to communicate is not included in the social norm? Fashion gives us the opportunity to communicate who we are or who we want to be without using words. Through attaching connotations to garments, the fashion world gives this garment a meaning and so a little black dress has another connotation than dungarees. Through these connotations we can express what we want to communicate, but if a man wears a skirt, it is hard for people to interpret his message. This happens when the fashion world creates connotations that are not includes within the social norm. The fashion world is free to create these connotations, but unless they are included within the social norm, it creates a noise. For people who don t want to dress themselves according to the social norms of femininity or masculinity, these social norms can be experienced as restrictive. And in the end, we are all discovering who we are and want to be accepted when we do. Fashion is often described as liberating, because it gives us the opportunity to communicate our identity. But when the fashion world is mostly holding on to the binary sexes it constructs gender ideas at the same time. Fashion does have an impact on gender, as it follows the social norms around femininity and masculinity set by society. But at the same time there are a lot of designers who play with these norms or create unisex collections, such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, who could be seen as the pioneer in playing with norms within the fashion world, but also Rad Hourani, Alexandre Mattiussi, and many more. If these designers, accompanied by the entire fashion world, continue to explore this gender development, it could develop into loosening the social norms. And trough that everybody will be able to communicate whatever they want to communicate, without the fear of being placed outside of the social norm. 9
