In more than 40 years, a lot of milestones were passed. You will find them in this first issue of Imagine, the magazine for alumni from NHTV, but also NWIT and VAT. Beste afgestudeerden, In 2006 vierden wij het veertigjarige bestaan van onze hogeschool en velen van u bezochten de reünie Re-connect! Daar bleek duidelijk dat er behoefte is de band tussen NHTV en afgestudeerden te intensiveren. Zie hier, een blad speciaal voor onze alumni. De hogeschool verandert en vernieuwt, maar we staan nog steeds met twee voeten in de praktijk. Onze belangrijkste opdracht is en blijft het verzorgen van kwalitatief goed onderwijs aan Nederlandse en buitenlandse studenten, maar we willen onze kennis en ervaring ook delen met de praktijk. En die praktijk bent u. De band tussen het werkveld en NHTV komt op verschillende manieren tot uiting. NHTV heeft leerbedrijven waarin studenten werken aan opdrachten vanuit het werkveld. Natuurlijk zijn er de vele stagiair(e)s en afstudeerders die door u worden begeleid, maar ook is er contact over vragen en problemen die in het werkveld spelen en om antwoord en oplossing vragen. Onder de naam NHTV.NXT hebben we een apart kennisluik geopend waardoor uw vraag op de juiste plaats binnen de organisatie terechtkomt. Speerpunten uit onze strategie zijn imagineering en internationalisering. Deze twee grensverleggende thema s lopen als een rode draad door alle activiteiten van NHTV. In het najaar verzorgt NHTV hierover een congres en uiteraard bent u van harte uitgenodigd. We zijn op weg naar de academische statuur. De Universiteit van Tilburg stopt in 2009 met de wetenschappelijke bachelor vrijetijds - wetenschappen en het is de bedoeling dat NHTV deze voortzet. Samen met Wageningen Universiteit bereiden we de start voor van de wetenschappelijke bachelor toerisme. Verder kijken we kritisch naar ons aanbod aan geaccrediteerde masteropleidingen, waarbij de wensen van afgestudeerden, van u dus, en de ontwikkelingen in het werkveld sterk bepalend zijn. U ziet, de dynamiek is gebleven en ondanks groei en verbreding zijn de kernwaarden van de hogeschool overeind gebleven. Wij zijn trots op uw waardering, op uw belangstelling voor ons reilen en zeilen en op uw enthousiasme om op tal van manieren betrokken te blijven bij ons instituut. Juist door die bijzondere band tussen u en ons heeft NHTV kunnen uitgroeien tot een instelling van (inter)nationale naam en faam. Daar ligt ook de kracht voor uw en onze toekomst. Rest mij u heel veel leesplezier te wensen en wellicht, zoals dat heet, de schrik der herkenning te ondergaan. In 2006 we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our institute and many of you attended the Re-connect! reunion. At this reunion, it clearly turned out that there is a need to forge closer ties between NHTV and its graduates. And behold a magazine especially for our alumni. The institute is going through changes and innovations, but we still have our feet firmly planted in practice. Our chief responsibility is and always will be the delivery of high-quality education to Dutch and foreign students, but we also want to share our knowledge and experience with the professional community. And the professional community, that is you. NHTV s ties with the industry are manifested in several ways. NHTV boasts student-run enterprises in which students carry out assignments for real clients. Of course, there are the many students on work placements and graduation projects who are supervised and coached by you, but there are also contacts about questions and problems that occur in the industry and call for answers and solutions. Under the name of NHTV.NXT we have set up a knowledge counter to ensure that your question gets to the right place within the organisation. Spearheads in our strategy are imagineering and internationalisation. These two boundary-stretching themes constitute the connecting thread running through all of NHTV s activities. In the autumn NHTV will be organising a conference on each theme, which, of course, you are warmly invited to attend. NHTV is currently striving to achieve academic stature. The University of Tilburg will discontinue its Bachelor in Leisure Studies in 2009, and the intention is for NHTV to take up the baton. Together with Wageningen University we are preparing the start of a Bachelor programme in Tourism. We are critically reviewing our accredited Master programmes, taking the wishes of our graduates - of you - and the developments in the industry as a guiding principle. As you can see, NHTV s dynamism is still alive, and despite growth in both size and diversity, we managed to retain the core values of our institute. We are proud of your appreciation, of your interest in our organisation, and of your enthusiasm for staying involved in our institute in numerous ways. It is precisely because of this special relationship between you and us that NHTV was able to evolve into an institute of national and international renown. That is also where the strength lies for both your and our future. Now it only remains for me to wish you great reading pleasure, in which you will probably experience the surprise of recognition, as it is termed. Dat is in 1963 het idee van de heer Sliepen, directeur van de Bredase VVV. Er moest een nationaal wetenschappelijk instituut komen dat zou bestaan uit een researchafdeling en een opleiding. Omdat de school nieuw van opzet is, wordt het lesmateriaal vooral verkregen door eigen research. A school that trains students to become Tourist Officers. That is Mr Sliepen s - director of the Breda Tourist Information Office - original idea in A national scientific institute is to be founded, consisting of a research department and a training centre. As this school is new of its kind, educational material is mainly obtained through its own research efforts. Pierre Huilmand Doc Reichert Frans Hanckmann VAT De Verkeersakademie Tilburg start in 1972 met 90 studenten, 9 medewerkers en 1 opleiding. Verkeerskunde dus. Het VAT is vernieuwend in haar opleiding Verkeerskunde door techniek, mens en maatschappij te laten samengaan. Het onderwijs is modern opgezet met veel projecten en praktijk in de opleiding. In 1978 krijgt de VAT er de opleiding Ruimtelijke ordening en planologie bij. En in 1980 volgt Logistiek en technische vervoerskunde. Traffic Academy Tilburg (VAT) starts in 1972 with 90 students, 9 employees and 1 study programme: Traffic Management. The Traffic Management programme is innovative in that it interweaves technology, man and society. The curriculum is very modern, comprising many projects and practical elements. The study programme in Urban and Rural Planning is added to the Traffic Academy in 1978, followed by the Logistics and Transport Management study programme in

Four NHTV employees reminisce on the past and catch up on the present. Do you remember them? Personeel! Het NWIT startte in 1966 met 12 medewerkers. De VAT startte zes jaar later met 9 medewerkers. Op 31 december 2007 stond de teller op 614 medewerkers (478,75 fte). Ook leuk om te weten: m/v > 288/326. Personnel! NWIT started in 1966 with 12 employees. VAT started six years later with 9 employees. By 31 December 2007, the total employee number had grown to 614 ( FTEs). Another interesting fact: m/f > 288/326. Maarten van Rijn Docent logistiek In dienst sinds: 1979 Ik ervaar op NHTV enorm veel vrijheid. Als je een kant op wilt en je gáát ervoor, dan krijg je de ruimte. Ik denk dat dat uniek is. Deze foto is gemaakt in 1991 op de Verkeersakademie Tilburg (VAT). Ik was propedeusecoördinator en docent lichamelijke opvoeding. Dat vak was toen voor iedereen verplicht. Met onder andere een master - studie op het gebied van kwaliteitsmanagement heb ik me vakinhoudelijk omgeschoold. Ik vind het geweldig werk. De studenten zijn jong en eigenwijs en je ziet ze groeien. Daar krijg ik energie van. We geven ze een gereedschapskist mee waarmee ze zelfstandig aan de slag kunnen in het werkveld. En dat lukt: 100% van de afgestudeerden vindt werk in hun richting. Lecturer in Logistics Employed since: 1979 I experience an enormous degree of freedom at NHTV. If you want to pursue a certain career path, and really go for it, you are given every opportunity to do so. I think that this is rather unique. This photo was taken in 1991 at the Traffic Academy in Tilburg (VAT). I was coordinator of the propaedeutic phase and gym teacher. Physical education was a compulsory subject for everyone at that time. I took retraining in quality management by means of a Master programme. I enjoy my job immensely. The students are young and self-willed and you see them grow. That gives me energy. We provide them with a tool kit which enables them to operate independently in the industry. And it works: 100 % of our graduates find jobs in their fields. We hebben allemaal een visie op het leven en we denken vaak dat dàt de waarheid is. Mijn missie is studenten iets van de rijkdom van andere culturen mee te geven en ze te laten ervaren dat onze Westerse opvattingen niet de enige juiste zijn. De foto is gemaakt tijdens een studiereis naar Ierland in Ik studeerde toen zelf aan NHTV. Er is sindsdien veel veranderd, de hogeschool is continu in beweging. Het onderwijs is internationaler en nog meer op de praktijk gericht. De droom van de student staat centraal en er wordt met passie gewerkt. Maar dat was vroeger ook al zo, denk ik. Passie is voor mij een absolute voorwaarde! Lecturer in Intercultural Communi cation Employed since: 2000 Things are not always what they seem. We all have a vision of life, which we tend to think of as the ultimate truth. My mission is to provide students with a deeper appreciation of the richness of other cultures and to have them experience that our Western views are not the only right ones. The photo was taken during a field trip in Ireland in At that time, I was studying at NHTV myself. A lot has changed since then, the institute is constantly in motion. Education has become more inter - national and even more practice-oriented. The student s dream takes a central place and everybody works with passion. But that is no different from the past, I think. To me, passion is an absolute must! Jeroen Vinkesteijn Docent marketing In dienst sinds: 1995 Deze foto is gemaakt in Ik zat toen in de propedeuse van het NWIT. Ongelooflijk, er mocht gewoon in de klas worden gerookt! Ik heb na mijn afstu - deren bij verschillende toeristisch-recreatieve bedrijven gewerkt, waaronder Teletravel en ANWB. Toen ik bij NHTV ging werken, dacht ik dat doe ik een paar jaartjes, maar er zijn nog steeds veel uitdagingen! We zijn bijvoorbeeld bezig met een virtuele managementgame die ieder jaar gespeeld zal worden door twee opleidingen van NHTV en drie buitenlandse partnerhogescholen. Een internationale competitie dus. In de game simuleren we de praktijk. De student leert beslissingen te nemen en deze te beargumenteren. Ja, er is veel veranderd sinds het computerloze NWIT uit 1980! Lecturer in Marketing Employed since: 1995 This photo was taken in At that time, I was in my propaedeutic year at NWIT. Unbelievably, by today s standards, we were allowed to smoke in class! After I graduated, I worked at several tourism-recreational businesses, including Teletravel and ANWB. When I took up my job at NHTV, I thought it would only be for a couple of years, but there are still many challenges, even today! For instance, we are working on a virtual management game that will be played every year by students from two academies of NHTV and three foreign partner institutions. In other words, an international competition. In this game, we simulate practical scenarios. Students learn to make decisions and to substantiate these decisions. Feesten, toneel, cabaret, reizen en niet te vergeten de introducties. Allemaal even leuk. Deze foto is gemaakt tijdens een studiereis in Natuurlijk is er veel veranderd in de 32 jaar dat ik hier werk. NHTV is enorm gegroeid en het is allemaal professioneler geworden. Als ik al die opleidingen en locaties zie, ben ik best trots dat ik hier een klein steentje aan heb bijgedragen. Overigens is met de groei de sfeer niet veranderd. Ik voel me hier thuis en werk graag met studenten. Het zijn echte sfeermakers. Mijn pensioen is in zicht, maar daar ben ik nog helemaal niet aan toe! All equally fun experiences. This photo was taken during a study trip in Of course, a lot has changed in the 32 years I have worked here. NHTV has grown enormously and has become much more professional. When I look at all these academies and locations, I am quite proud to have contributed to this growth process. And as it happens, all these developments did not change the pleasant atmosphere at NHTV. I feel at home here and I enjoy working with students. They are real atmosphere creators. I am due for retirement shortly, but I am not at all ready for that! Good to Know Associate Professorships NHTV heeft diverse lectoraten ingesteld om kennis te blijven ont wikkelen. Door intensief contact en nauwe samenwerking met het (internationale) werkveld wil zij kennisdeling en kennis circulatie tot stand brengen. Hierin spelen de lectoren een cruciale rol. Ontmoet ze in dit magazine! NHTV has established several Associate Professorships to continue developing knowledge. Through intensive contacts and close cooperation with the (international) industry, it strives to achieve knowledge sharing and knowledge circulation. In this process, the Associate Professors play a crucial role. Meet them in this magazine! ROOTS Nog steeds denken veel mensen bij NHTV direct aan toerisme. Niet gek, want dat is de eerste opleiding waarmee het Nederlands Wetenschappelijk Instituut voor Toerisme (NWIT) in 1966 startte. Er is veel veranderd, NHTV is gegroeid en er zijn vakgebieden bijgekomen. Maar we zijn heel trots op onze roots en het toerisme verovert nog steeds vele harten. Er is aandacht voor luchtvaart, touroperating, attracties, tourmanagement, economie en marketing. Maar ook duurzaamheid en klimaat staan op de agenda. NHTV verzorgt twee bacheloropleidingen (Management toerisme en Functiegericht toerisme en recreatie) en twee master opleidingen (European Tourism Management en Tourism Destination Management) en is internationaal koploper op het gebied van toeristisch onderwijs. Toerisme Denise Schelbergen Many people still tend to associate NHTV with tourism first and foremost. This is not altogether strange, because it is NHTV s oldest programme, initiated in 1966 at the then NWIT (Netherlands Scientific Institute for Tourism). Of course, many changes have taken place since that time: NHTV has grown and many disciplines were added to expand NHTV s education offerings. But we are very proud of our roots and tourism still conquers the hearts of many. The programme covers aviation, tour operating, tour management, economics and marketing. Additionally, sustainability and climate are on the agenda from day one. NHTV offers two Bachelor programmes (Tourism Management and Profession-Oriented Tourism and Recreation) and two Master programmes (European Tourism Management and Tourism Destination Management) and is an international leader in tourism education. Tourism NHTV-opleidingen: Kort-hbo toerisme en recreatie & Functiegericht toerisme en recreatie. Afstudeerjaar: 2002 & Werkt bij: Sinja Travel en 3 Oceans Travel. Functie: Productmanager. Wat houdt je werk in? We zijn gespecialiseerd in maatwerkreizen naar Azië en de eilanden in de Caribbean, Indische Oceaan en Stille Oceaan. Ik houd me bezig met alles wat bij deze reizen komt kijken: verkoop, brochures, productontwikkeling, persreizen. Leukste aan je werk? De afwisseling en het contact met het buitenland. Je leert zoveel over andere culturen en het omgaan met mensen uit die culturen. Toekomst? Ik ben gefascineerd door ontwikkelingswerk en duurzaam toerisme. Het allerliefste zou ik hierin ooit een eigen bedrijf opstarten. Herinneringen aan NHTV? Ik denk er met veel plezier aan terug. Vooral aan de vele projecten. Die lagen mij beter dan de theorie! Welke docent zou jij volgend jaar graag zien in dit blad? Rina Laros. Van welke afgestudeerde wil je het verhaal lezen? Colette Miedema. We specialise in tailor-made tours to Asia and the islands in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. I am involved in every aspect of these tours: sales, brochures, product development, press trips. What do you like most about your job? The variation and contacts with foreign countries. You get to learn so much about other cultures and about dealing with people from these cultures. Future? Development aid and sustainable tourism fascinate me. I would like more than anything to set up a business of my own in this field some day. Memories of NHTV? I think back upon my days at NHTV with great pleasure. Especially the many projects, which certainly suited me better than the theory part! Which lecturer would you like to see in this magazine next year? Rina Laros. Professor Nico Visser Sustainable Tourism and Transport Sustainable tourism is tourism that we won t come to regret later First class De Stem schreef op 6 september 1966: Het Nederlandse Wetenschappelijk Instituut voor Toerisme (NWIT) in Breda is gisteren begonnen met de lessen. Ter gelegenheid geeft de directeur een openbare les in café t Zuid aan de Grote Markt in Breda over het thema Recreatie in Noord-Brabant. On 6 September 1966 newspaper De Stem writes: The Netherlands Scientific Institute for Tourism (NWIT) in Breda started its classes yesterday. On this special occasion, the director delivers a public lecture in Café t Zuid at Grote Markt in Breda about the theme of Recreation in Noord-Brabant. Phileas Fogg Drie weken na de eerste lesdag wordt studentenvereniging Phileas Fogg opgericht. En die reist anno nu nog steeds mee! De opleiding start met 58 studenten en 12 medewerkers en duurt twee jaar en drie maanden. In 1972 wordt de studieduur verlengd tot drie jaar, in 1986 wordt de studie met nog een jaar verlengd. Three weeks after the first day of classes, student union Phileas Fogg is founded, which still exists today! The study programme sets out with 58 students and 12 employees and lasts two years and three months. In 1972 this duration is extended to three years, and yet another year is added in

5 Ton ter Horst NHTV-opleiding: Toerisme, toen nog: NWIT (Nederlands Weten - schappelijk Instituut voor Toerisme). Afstudeerjaar: Werkt bij: Agro Reizen. Functie: Algemeen Directeur. Wat houdt je werk in? We organiseren groepsreizen voor met name gepensioneerde agrariërs. De reizen zijn geheel verzorgd en gaan langs interessante projecten en boerenbedrijven. Herinneringen aan NWIT? Het was kleinschalig, iedereen kende elkaar. Docenten kwamen uit de praktijk. Bij het tentamen Rechten mochten we alle boeken erbij houden, want zo gaat het in de praktijk ook. En woensdag was dé stapavond! Ontwikkelingen in het vakgebied? Onze doelgroep verandert, daarom onderzoeken we hoe we ons format in meerdere vakgebieden kunnen toepassen. Daarnaast is de communicatie steeds digitaler. Maar het blijft een people s business! Ik hamer erop dat we mensen opzoeken en bellen in plaats van mailen. Welke docent zou jij volgend jaar graag zien in dit blad? Gerard van Ooijen (oud-docent Engels) en zijn gezellige vrouw Lenie. Van welke afgestudeerde wil je het verhaal lezen? Eigenlijk ben ik wel benieuwd naar al mijn jaargenoten van afstudeerjaar 1978! We organise group tours for retired farmers in particular. The tours are all-inclusive and we visit interesting projects and farms en route. Memories of NWIT? It was all very small-scale, everyone knew each other. Lecturers came from the industry. In the law examination we were allowed to use our books, because that s how it goes in actual practice too. And Wednesday was our going out night! Developments in the field? Our target group is changing, that is why we are examining the possibility of extending our format to retirees from other lines of work. In addition, communication is digitalising at a rapid speed. But it is and always will be a people s business! I keep insisting that we visit and call people instead of ing them. Which lecturer would you like to see in this magazine next year? Functie: Adviseur Maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen. Hoe ben je hier terechtgekomen? Mijn interesse voor duurzaamheid is op NHTV gewekt. Na de vervolgstudie Internationale betrekkingen heb ik bij ANPED gewerkt aan politiek beleid rondom duurzaamheid. Na ruim zes jaar wilde ik terug naar de praktijk. Leukste aan je werk? Ik kan hier iets concreets bijdragen aan de maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid van bedrijven. Ontwikkelingen in het vakgebied? Vroeger ging duurzaamheid met name over afval en milieu. Nu gaat het over de drie p s: people, planet, profit. Maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen is niet idealistisch, maar professioneel. Typisch NHTV?: In groepen samenwerken. After having completed an advanced study programme in International Relations, I found a job at ANPED to help develop political policy regarding sustainability. After more than six years, I wanted to return to actual practice. What do you like most about your job? The fact that I can make a concrete contribution to the social responsibility of the corporate community. Developments in the field? Sustainability used to be about waste processing and environmental protection. Now it is about the three Ps: people, planet, profit. Socially responsible enterprise is not idealistic, but professional. Typically NHTV? Working together in groups. That s something you don t learn at university! Wat houdt je werk in? Ik schrijf muziek voor evenementen en regel orkest en uitvoering. Ik speel piano (en een boel andere instrumenten) in bands en muziektheatervoorstellingen. Leukste aan je werk? Muziek is mijn passie, ik heb nooit het gevoel dat ik naar mijn werk moet. Aansluiting van je studie op het werkveld? Voor geen meter natuurlijk! Maar reizen was en is mijn tweede passie. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat het NWIT me een breder mens heeft gemaakt. Toekomst: Muziek componeren voor film, een cd maken en natuurlijk een hit schrijven! I write music for events and arrange orchestras and performances. I play the piano (and lots of other instruments) in bands and music theatre shows. What do you like most about your job? Music is my passion, I never feel that my job is an obligation. Alignment between your study programme and the industry? Considering the line of work I am in: none whatsoever! But travel was and still is my second passion. I am convinced that NWIT made me a broader person. Future: Composing film music, producing a CD and, of course, writing a hit song or piece of music!
