In America it s known as Make a Difference Day. The aim of Make a Difference Day is to stimulate volunteer work. Clubs, companies and organisations do something for a non-profit goal. In Holland up to 100, 000 people take part each year. Thanks to te enthusiasm of our tuinouder Caroline Frencken we are also taking part in NL doet. The work we do will be focussed on the garden, the playground and the school neighbourhood. If you d like to take part please let your child s teacher know or Caroline, caroline.frenken@gmail.com. 2 Trefpunt 4Beat On Thursday 10th March groups 7 and 8 will see the show 4Beat at the Trefpunt in Warmond. The four young percussionists from 4Beat will introduce the children to drums and rhythms from around the world in an energetic show. 4Beats combine beats from Africa, Asia and Latin America with DJ scratching and use body percussion, oriental rhythms, song and dance. A brilliant show that allows you to feel good about making music. We are looking for parents who can cycle with te children to and from the show. We will leave school at around 10:15 and we ll be back at school at 12:15 uur. Please be sure that all the children from groups 7-8 come to school by bicycle. Verkeersexamen groep 7 The kids from group 7 will sit a written Verkeersexam (highway code/traffic exam) on the 7th April. They can practice for this exam here: examen.vvn.nl. We will also prepare for the verkeersexam at school. The practical Verkeersexamen, for which the children will be observed as they cycle alone through Oegstgeest, will also take place in April. The exact date will follow. We wish all pupils success in their preparation for the exam!

3 Voorleeswedstrijd On Monday 15th February Iris Schoonhoven, class 7-8D, took part in the first round of the Nationale Voorleeswedstrijd (reading aloud). The jury was very impressed with her performance and she got through to the quarter final on March 12th! We wish her the best of luck! SamenSterk At school we support the children with their social skills. We teach the children to have insight in their relationships with others so that they: discover their talents, are open and collaborative and know how to ask for help. Some children require more help than others with these skills. In this period, the group SamenSterk is made up of 7 girls. They will be tutored by Sharon Groot en Marjolein van Rijen. There will be 8 sessions of 45 to 60 minuten during which the following issues will be addressed: knowledge and insight, skills and behaviour. Different forms of activity will be offered, including: role play, observation, collaborative tasks and brainstorming. For example, the children will work in pairs to allow an egg to fall 2 meters without breaking. This is what the children report they have learned during SamenSterk: Working together What our talents are Treating someone with respect Listening to someone else Behaving well even if the teacher pops out Asking for help when something isn t going right. Thema Heelal in de onderbouw groepen 1-4 In the coming weeks the whole school will work on the theme: Space/the universe On the 7th March the onderbouw teachers will open the project with a play. The children will learn lots about planets, stars, rockets and satellites. We will make planets, rockets and satellites etc in the class. So if you have any plastic bottles please bring them to school. During the project we are looking for parents who work for ESTEC / ESA who would be willing to come to school and give a lesson. Please contact you child s teacher to volunteer.
