3 Voorwoord Beste ELSA-leden, In de tweede nieuwsbrief van dit jaar kun je terugblikken op een heleboel geslaagde activiteiten. Een stel van deze activiteiten zijn ook goed bezocht door de erasmus studenten van onze universiteit. De stukjes over deze activiteiten zijn in het Engels geschreven. In tegenstelling tot wat je misschien gewend bent aan het eind van deze nieuwsbrief geen losse vacatures maar onder het kopje STEP vacatures zul je uitleg vinden over hoe naar deze vacatures te solliciteren. Bij dit stukje staat ook een link naar de STEP Newsletter van ELSA International waarin alle beschikbare vacatures van dit moment te vinden zijn. 4 Afgelopen activiteiten Excursie naar de Penitentiaire Inrichtingen Vught ELSA Nijmegen had op 23 september een excursie georganiseerd naar de Penitentiaire Inrichtingen Vught. Holleeder, Samir A. en Mohamad B.; allemaal beruchte gedetineerden die we uit de media kennen en die in Vught hun tijd uitzitten. Deze excursie bestond uit een lezing en een rondleiding over het terrein. De heer Timmermans (Afdelingshoofd TA/HvB ) begeleidde ons de hele middag en liet ons de meest indrukwekkende plaatsen zien. We begonnen met een lezing waarbij we tussendoor vragen mochten stellen, iedereen maakte van deze gelegenheid gebruik en stelde zijn of haar vraag. Vaak horen wij in de media kritische verhalen over de gevangenis in Vught en hebben een bepaald beeld hiervan, tijdens ons gesprek met de heer Timmermans werd dit beeld al snel bijgesteld. Daarna begonnen we met de rondleiding over het terrein en mochten we zelfs een cel van binnen bekijken en de sfeer in de cel voelen. Het was een zeer indrukwekkende excursie. Roza Mustafa, VP Academic Activities Excursie naar Europol Den Haag Op vrijdag 8 oktober zijn we naar Europol geweest in Den Haag. Hier hebben wij een lezing bijgewoond over Europol, de werkzaamheden, de structuur, de rol van Europol binnen de lidstaten van de Europese Unie, de verhouding met Interpol en nog veel meer. Europol is een instelling van de Europese Unie belast met het verzamelen en uitwisselen van informatie tussen de 27 lidstaten van de Europese Unie op basis van samenwerking tussen deze lidstaten op het gebied van zware internationale misdaadbestrijding. Maar ook andere niet EU-lidstaten hebben liasons geplaatst bij Europol om zo mee te delen van de informatie en mee te werken aan de bestrijding van misdaden. Ook werden de mogelijkheden voor studenten benadrukt om bij Europol aan de slag te gaan in de vorm van een stage of een baan. Het was een interessante en educatieve excursie. 5 Activiteiten Erasmus Commissie On Tuesday the 12th of October the committee organised a welcome drink for all new foreign students of our faculty. It was a typical Dutch rainy day so it was the perfect opportunity to have a drink at our university café and to get to know each other. Many students, both foreign and Dutch, showed up which made it a very gezellig and fun afternoon. Thank you all for joining us! The second activity was a lecture on gay marriage, drugs and prostitution which was held at café Nieuw Oost. Ms. Van Hedel gave us a very interesting and fun lecture on these typical and controversial Dutch policies. It is always useful to know how much drugs you can carry with you and how many plants you are allowed to keep. The Erasmuscommittee Presentatie aan B2 studenten in de Brasserie Op 13 oktober 2010 waren alle B2 studenten en IER docenten door meneer Wools uitgenodigd om in de Brasserie aanwezig te zijn voor de jaarlijkse bijeenkomst voor B2 studenten. Tijdens deze unieke bijeenkomst stellen de docenten van de vaksectie Internationaal en Europees recht zich voor. Daarnaast gaven ELSA Nijmegen en SILA een presentaties over hun studieverenigingen. Na deze presentaties was er een uitstekende lunch. De reacties over de presentaties waren zeer positief, daarnaast hebben velen zich bij ELSA Nijmegen ingeschreven als lid. Zowel studenten als docenten waren geinteresseerd in een lidmaatschap bij ELSA, waar wij, het bestuur van ELSA Nijmegen, heel blij mee zijn. Daarom wil ik namens het ELSA- bestuur, van deze gelegenheid gebruik maken om alle nieuwe leden van harte welkom te heten! Nora Nerwa, president ELSA Nijmegen. 5

6 Luxemburg reis Studyvisit to Luxembourg by ELSA Nijmegen ELSA Nijmegen organized a three day study visit to Luxembourg on the 17 th till 19 th of November. We went with a group of 32 students and 2 academic supervisors (Mrs. Looijestijn and Mr. Tans). We left from Nijmegen at 8 a.m. by bus and arrived at 2 p.m. in Luxembourg at our Hostel. After a short rest we had a guided tour of Luxembourg, we sow very interesting places like Palace d Armes, Constitution Square, the old town, the Grund and many more. Everyone was really enthusiastic about the town itself and the coziness of it. In the evening we had dinner together at Brasserie du Cercle, this was a great opportunity to get to know each other and to relax. After dinner we went out to discover the nightlife of Luxembourg. Fortunately everyone was very excited and active despite the long day we had. The next morning we had a visit to the Court of Justice of the EU planed, we were welcomed by our lovely guide who stood by us during the whole program. First we got a brief overview of the case that we supposed to attend, after this we went on to the big Courtroom to attend the case. For the most of us this was the first time to see the judges of the ECJ in action. It was fascinating to see how it all works in practice, because as a law student you only read about the Court and never experience it in real life. The case we attended was about intellectual property rights, free circulation and placing under a suspensive procedure of counterfeit and pirated goods. The parties were Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV and Lucheng Meijing Industrial Company Ltd and others. The third and the last day was also a very interesting day, first we went to the University of Luxembourg and after that we went to EIPA (European institute of public administration). At the University we got an overview of the courses that are given there, the masters and the possibilities for PhD students. After this general presentation we went on to the faculty of law and got a lecture about the faculty itself and the courses they offer by a professor of law there. At EIPA we got an interesting presentation about the history of EIPA and what goal it has. It was a presentation given by William Bull, an employee and old ELSA Maastricht member, this because he was a Law student in Maastricht a few years ago. He didn t only gave an informative presentation, but he added also some difficult scenarios of things that he sometime had to face as an employee of EIPA. This made everybody very interactive. It was overall a great trip with great people and good activities; everybody had a great time there and we all enjoyed ourselves. We thank all the participants for the great time together and for your enthusiasm, you showed us real ELSA spirit. 7 STUDY VISIT TO LUXEMBOURG Between 17 th and 19 th November ELSA Nijmegen organized a study visit to the city of Luxembourg and its institutions. As one of the participants of this unforgettable event, I would like to present a little overview of the trip. After all the participants gathered on an early Wednesday morning to leave for the trip, three days full of academic stuff as well as lot of fun in this amazing city, started. We arrived to Luxembourg around lunch time, accommodated in our hostel and despite the fact that most of the participants were tired because of getting up very early on that day; all of us were very excited to join a guided tour around the city. After living in the Netherlands the country without any hills it was a bit demanding to climb up to the hill where the centre of Luxembourg is. Nevertheless, the effort worth it Luxembourg is indeed one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to full of medieval buildings, narrow streets with its own atmosphere. I am definitely not speaking only on behalf of myself when I say that the city is very impressive. We finished our evening in a cosy French restaurant Brasserie du Cercle, which was a great opportunity to meet other participant of the trip and to learn some typical ELSA songs. I assume that every single participant was waiting for the morning program on Thursday a visit to European Court of Justice. Even though as a law student you hear and learn about European Court of Justice a lot, you usually do not have many opportunities to visit this important EU institution, therefore all participants were very eager and full of expectations, especially because we were going to see a real hearing of the court. After our arrival we got a brief presentation on the PHILIPS CASE that we were going to see. Afterwards we moved to the courtroom to experience how European law is exercised in practice. Even though the hearing lasted for two and half hours I am very sure that it was an extraordinary experience for every single participant. After the hearing ended our lovely guide took us to the most important places in the building of European Court of Justice. There was also another presentation prepared for us this time on internal procedures of the court, which I found very interesting and more than beneficial. All in all, I would say that the visit of European Court of Justice was for everybody, an unforgettable experience. On the last day of our stay we visited University of Luxembourg. We were given a presentation on mainly masters and PhD studies programs by coordinators of a law faculty. Later at that day we visited EIPA European Centre for Judges and Lawyers. After a presentation about the aim of this institution and its work that contributes to deepen legal knowledge of lawyers and judges not only in the states of European Union, unfortunately it was time to leave to Nijmegen. But of course study visit to Luxembourg was not only about academic program as well as about having fun, meeting new people and last but not least so-called" ELSA Spirit. As a former ELSA member working for this amazing association I would like to add that before this trip I was full of expectations finally after two years of organizing events for law students, I had this unique opportunity to experience ELSA event as a participant. And I must say (not only as a 7

8 former ELSA member but also as one of the participants) that the reality was far beyond my expectations - study visit to Luxembourg was indeed an unforgettable event with an interesting academic and social program, that was precisely prepared. 10 STEP vacatures STEP staat voor Student Trainee Exchange Programme van The European Law Students' Association (ELSA). Via STEP kunnen ELSA-leden stage lopen in het buitenland. Bij advocatenkantoren of juridische bedrijven, maar ook bij ambassades of overheidsinstellingen. Waarom STEP? - Je doet juridische ervaring op in de praktijk; - Je krijgt de kans om kennis te maken met een buitenlandse taal en cultuur en rechtssysteem; - Je krijgt een stagevergoeding en wordt volledig begeleid: de lokale groep regelt huisvesting en laat je kennismaken met de cultuur en gewoontes; - Je bepaalt zelf hoe lang je stage wilt lopen.
