1 Quibus / Intel Helena Island Home Server Een nieuw concept Windows Home Server opent nieuwe mogelijkheden voor computerfabrikanten. De Intel Helena Island Home Server barebone is daar een prima voorbeeld van. We kregen de kans dit product te bekijken. Frank Everaardt O p de voorgaande pagina s heb je alles kunnen lezen over de mogelijkheden van Windows Home Server. De meeste leveranciers zullen hun eerste computers baseren op bestaande componenten: een compacte behuizing gecombineerd met een Micro-ATX moederbord en een paar harde schijven. De grote fabrikanten kiezen voor een kastje met een iets andere voorkant, maar de keuzes zijn allesbehalve bijzonder. Dit doen ze om de prijzen laag te houden. Maar het kan ook anders. Dat bewijst Intel met de Helena Island barebone, waarop onder meer het curieus gedoopte Quibus Computers Enzo uit Leiden een systeem gaat baseren. Stevig Chassis Bij de eerste kennismaking fronsen we onze wenkbrauwen: is dit een homeserver? De behuizing lijkt meer op die van een projector en is vrij fors. De bijzondere vorm van de kast is maar een lokkertje, want in het binnenwerk bevindt zich een stevig chassis dat voor fabrikanten makkelijk aan te passen is door er een eigen skin om heen te bouwen. Hiermee zal het apparaat bijvoorbeeld meer op een echte server gaan lijken of juist op een high-end audio-apparaat. De vrij forse afmetingen worden verklaard als we de kap van de behuizing halen; daar vinden we namelijk ruimte voor vier 3,5 inch harde schijven, die in een bijzonder mechanisme zijn opgehangen waardoor vibraties en lawaai tot het minimum worden beperkt. Daaronder bevindt zich een speciaal voor dit doel ontworpen moederbord op basis van de Intel 945GZchipset. Deze vormt, gecombineerd met de Intel ICH7R south bridge, onder meer de aansturing voor de vier SATA-aansluitingen op het moederbord. Zeer stil De chipset werkt samen met een Low Voltage Celeron 420 (1,6 GHz) processor die verscholen gaat onder een groot koperen koelblok. Deze Celeron is afkomstig uit de Intel Core-familie. Opvallend is de afwezigheid van een monitoraansluiting. Die is namelijk uitgeschakeld, waardoor fabrikanten gebruik kunnen maken van een goedkopere embedded variant van Home Server. Om toch enige communicatie in het geval van problemen mogelijk te maken, is het kastje voorzien van een slim LED-paneel aan de voorzijde dat aangeeft of er problemen zijn. Systeembouwers kunnen via een console redirect via de seriële poort of door een PCI-Expres x1 videokaart in het enige insteekslot op het moederbord te steken het besturingssysteem installeren. Het systeem wordt gevoed door een 180 Watt voeding en is zeer stil. Op het moederbord heeft Intel verder nog een Intel gigabit netwerkchip aangebracht en een Silicon Image SATA-controller. Die laatste verzorgt twee esata-aansluitingen aan de buitenkant en daarmee kun je snel en makkelijk de opslag uitbreiden als de vier schijven die zich in de machine bevinden onvoldoende blijken te zijn. Daarnaast zijn er in totaal nog vier USB-aansluitingen aanwezig. Slim is de recovery-knop waarmee het systeem als de systeemfabrikant daarvoor gezorgd heeft - met een simpele druk op de knop is te resetten. Quibus Computers Enzo is van plan deze functionaliteit te implementeren. K Conclusie Met Helena Island toont Intel hoe een ideale homeserver er uit zou kunnen zien: stil en voorzien van veel ruimte voor harde schijven, die ook nog eens middels de esata- en USB-aansluitingen eenvoudig uitgebreid kan worden. 3 Network requirements Getting Started Before running Windows Home Server Setup, users will need to find a suitable place to put their home server. The location must have an available, wired network connection, either to a broadband router or to a switch that is connected to a broadband router.
