2 Stephan Balkenhol MDZ Art Gallery, Knokke-Heist, BE Stephan Balkenhol ( 1957, Duitsland) is een van de meest vooraanstaande, virtuoze hedendaagse beeldhouwers. Refererend naar de Europese beeldhouwtraditie produceert Balkenhol vrijstaande, figuratieve sculpturen en reliëfs, doorgaans van gewone mannen en vrouwen in een staande pose. Hun contouren zijn duidelijk en helder, zonder in details te vervallen. Hun aanblik is vertrouwd en anoniem, zonder de aanwezigheid van een individuele expressie. Het zijn stille, serene waarnemers, starend in het niets. De beeldhouwwerken bestaan doorgaans uit verschillende soorten hout. Vormelijk typerend voor zijn werk is het sculpturen van figuur en sokkel uit een en hetzelfde houtblok, bijvoorbeeld in de zogenaamde figurenzuilen. Balkenhol maakt daarnaast ook edities in brons en tekeningen die uitmunten door hun uitgepuurde sobere lijnvoering en hun ingetogen karakter. Alhoewel Stephan Balkenhol vooral bekend staat voor zijn figuratieve houten sculpturen, vinden we in de publieke ruimte - in steden als Berlijn, Chicago, Johannesburg, Kortrijk, Londen, Parijs en Salzburg - monumentale bronzen sculpturen van zijn hand. Beeldhouwwerken van de internationaal vermaarde kunstenaar zijn opgenomen in de belangrijkste museale en particuliere collecties wereldwijd, o.a. in die van het M HKA - Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, de Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlijn en het Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, VS. Historisch gezien ligt het belang van Stephan Balkenhol daarin dat hij, uitgerekend in de nadagen van Concept & Minimal Art, een minimale vormentaal verzoent met figuratieve beeldhouwkunst in hout. Zijn beeldtaal heeft het hedendaagse idee van beeldhouwkunst ontegensprekelijk beïnvloed en de positie van de figuratieve kunst mee gevrijwaard. In CC Scharpoord vindt momenteel de eerste publieke institutionele overzichtstentoonstelling in België plaats, getiteld Stephan Balkenhol - Houten sculpturen uit privécollecties. Hier zijn ook een aantal beschikbare werken te zien. Naar aanleiding van deze expo, is Deweer Gallery (Otegem), die sinds 1987 Balkenhol exclusief vertegenwoordigt op de Belgische markt, een samenwerking aangegaan met MDZ Art Gallery (Knokke-Heist) voor een verkooptentoonstelling. Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid maakte Balkenhol onder andere een nieuwe, bronzen editie Mann mit Weißem Hemd und schwarzer Hose. Deze brons van een klassiek geklede man is een representatief symbool, een iconische uitbeelding binnen zijn oeuvre. Tot de belangrijkste solotentoonstellingen van Stephan Balkenhol behoren zijn exposities in Kunsthalle Emden, Duitsland (2018), Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spanje (2018), het MMOMA - Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Rusland (2016), het Leopold-Hoesch-Museum Düren, Duitsland (2015), de Landesgalerie Linz, Oostenrijk ( ), het Kunstmuseum Ravensburg, Duitsland (2014), de Sankt Elisabeth in Kassel, Duitsland (2012), het Musée de Grenoble, Frankrijk (2010), de Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Duitsland (2009), het National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan (2005) en het Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Duitsland (2003). In reisde een omvangrijke tentoonstelling van zijn werk van de Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Duitsland naar het MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst in Duisburg, Duitsland en verder naar het Museum der Moderne Salzburg Mönchsberg, Oostenrijk.

3 Stephan Balkenhol MDZ Art Gallery, Knokke-Heist, BE Stephan Balkenhol ( 1957, Germany) is one of the most eminent, virtuoso contemporary sculptors. Clearly referencing European sculpting tradition, Balkenhol from the start produces figurative, three dimensional sculptures and reliefs, usually of ordinary men and women in a static pose. Their outlines are simple and clear, but without too much detail. They come across as familiar and anonymous, without showing any individual expression. They are silent observers, staring into nothingness. The sculptures are made of different kinds of wood. Formally speaking, one of the most typical aspects of his sculptures, especially in the so-called figure columns, is that figure and base are sculpted out of one wood log. In addition to sculptures, Balkenhol also makes editions in bronze and drawings that stand out because of their pared down, plain lines and their restrained character. in M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, US, amongst others. Sculptures of the internationally renowned artist are included in major museum and private collections worldwide, in M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, US, amongst others. Historically, the importance of Stephan Balkenhol, lies in the fact that he, precisely in the aftermath of Concept and Minimal Art, was able to reconcile a minimal formal language with figurative sculpture in wood. His visual language has incontrovertibly influenced our contemporary idea of sculpture and helped safeguard the position of figurative art. The first public institutional overview exhibition in Belgium currently takes place at CC Scharpoord, titled Stephan Balkenhol - Wood sculptures from private collections. In addition to loans, a couple of available works will be presented at CC Scharpoord. Because of this exhibition, Deweer Gallery (Otegem), who has represented Balkenhol exclusively on the Belgian market since 1987, and MDZ Art Gallery (Knokke-Heist) decided to collaborate for a sales exhibition. Especially for this occasion, Balkenhol made, amongst others, a new sculpture in bronze Mann mit Weißem Hemd und schwarzer Hose available as an edition. This bronze of a classically dressed man is a representative symbol, an iconic depiction within his body of work. In an extensive exhibition of his work travelled from the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany to MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst in Duisburg, Germany and further to Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Mönchsberg, Austria. Although Stephan Balkenhol is mostly known for his figurative wooden sculptures, many of his monumental bronze sculptures can be found in the urban public space - in cities as Berlin, Chicago, Johannesburg, Kortrijk, London, Paris and Salzburg. SB Ter gelegenheid van de samenwerking tussen Deweer Gallery & MDZ Art Gallery, en van zijn solo show in CC Scharpoord, maakte de kunstenaar deze nieuwe, bronzen sculptuur. Het werk verbeeldt een Westerse man klassiek gekleed in een wit hemd en een zwarte broek. Deze figuratie is zijn handelsmerk. In lijn met de hem zo typerende beeldtaal voelt ook dit nieuwe werk minimalistisch aan en is het uitgevoerd met respect voor de verhoudingen van het menselijke lichaam. De karakteristieke statische pose is opnieuw aanwezig. Meer bepaald de voeten die lichtjes uit elkaar staan, de armen die sober naast zijn lichaam hangen en de blik die in de verte kijkt. Dit werk is een representatieff symbool, een iconische uitbeelding binnen Balkenhols onnavolgbare oeuvre waarvan de kiem reeds vroeg in zijn carrière aanwezig was. For the occasion of the collaboration between Deweer Gallery & MDZ Art Gallery, and of his solo show in CC Scharpoord, the artist made a new bronze edition. The work depicts a Western man, traditionally dressed in white shirt and black trousers. This figuration is his trademark. Fully in line with his typical visual language, this new work also exudes a minimalist feel, and a deep respect for the proportions of the human body in its execution. The characteristic static pose is once again present. It is specifically expressed in the feet standing slightly apart, the arms simply hanging next to the body and the gaze of the figure staring into the distance. The work is a representative symbol, an iconic depiction that forms part of his inimitable oeuvre, the germ of which was already present very early on in his career.
