Astridlaan 57, 9100 Sint-Niklaas Spreker: Prof. Dr. Werner HELSEN Thema voordracht: Zijn topscheidsrechters = topsporters?! Een unieke kijk achter de schermen van de Wereldbeker 2010 Prof. Werner Helsen schetste ons een gedetailleerd beeld van de taak van een expert in training en coaching van topscheidsrechters. Hij begeleidt niet alleen Belgische topreferees maar ook de internationale topscheidsrechters binnen UEFA en zelfs FIFA. Die internationale top wordt gedurende 2,5 jaar constant begeleid, gecontroleerd en geëvalueerd en daarbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van de meest moderne apparatuur en hulpmiddelen. Zo is er o.a constante communicatie, trainingsprogramma's en coaching via internet, worden er regelmatig alles omvattende inspanningstesten afgenomen, worden de whereabouts bijgehouden en worden trainingsstages georganiseerd waarbij alle medische aspecten en testen aan bod komen, fysieke proeven, wedstrijdtraining, PC-simulaties, enz... Dit alles resulteert in een fulltime job als topscheidsrechter met een activiteit van om en bij de 200u per maand. Het begeleidingsteam waartoe prof. Helsen behoort staat, naast de trainingsplanning, ook in voor de verblijfsaccommodatie, het materiaal, de verblijfsomkadering, de trainingsfaciliteiten, de verplaatsingen, enz.

2 Verder kregen we ook een duidelijk inzicht in de specifieke taken tijdens een EK of WK. Dagelijks wordt er gezorgd voor medische begeleiding, individuele fysieke en mentale training, mediatraining, situationele training zoals buitenspelsituaties, enz. Daarbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van video, feedback, PC,... Dit alles wordt wetenschappelijk gemeten, gecontroleerd en geëvalueerd. Perceptie is alles zegt prof. Helsen en dit werd ons geïllustreerd en bevestigd door middel van een praktische oefening via een kort filmpje met een buitenspelsituatie die door iedereen moet beoordeeld worden. Zo ontdekten wij zelf wat Perceptionele illusie door het flash bij-effect betekent! Door de uitermate interessante inhoud die in een zeer vloeiende spreekstijl werd gebracht en begeleid werd door uniek beeldmateriaal is prof. Helsen erin geslaagd een schitterende interactie te bekomen tussen spreker en toehoorders. Dit resulteerde in een boeiende, leerrijke, leuke en onderhoudende dialoog en discussie waarbij iedereen overtuigd werd dat een topscheidsrechter een TOPATLEET is! 5 CV PROF. DR. WERNER HELSEN Werner Helsen is professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He is chairman of the Research group of Movement Control and Neuroplasticity and head of the Perception and Performance laboratory. His research interests focus on the visual control of voluntary movement as well as on the development and acquisition of expert perception and performance. He teaches motor learning and control as well as training and coaching theory in team sports in general and football, in particular. Prof. Dr. Helsen has published many scientific papers in international peer-review journals. As from 1999 on, he has been appointed by FIFA and UEFA as a training expert and a consultant for the match officials physical preparation and evaluation. In this respect, he prepared specific training programmes for the referees and the assistant referees during the last 4 UEFA European Championships ( ) as well as during the last 3 FIFA World Cups ( ). V.l.n.r. Scheidsrechters Frank De Bleeckere, Pierluigi Collina en Werner Helsen Over the past 10 years, many FIFA and UEFA top referees have been exposed to his theoretical and practical expertise. Via internet, he provides these match officials with individualized weekly training plans and he monitors their training load and physical impact of their match performances using the heart rate files they send back. In addition to tournaments, he has also taught at many seminars for different groups of FIFA and UEFA match officials, such as assistant referees, women referees, futsal referees (indoor)

6 and referee talents (young promising officials). At these occasions, he introduced and explained modern training methods for a more efficient preparation and better recovery. Using technical equipment such as heart rate monitors, he combined the scientific reasoning with a very practical aspect in order to individually monitor referees and to prevent injuries. In this respect, his reputation in this field is worldwide. From 2001 on, he is also in charge of the physical preparation and evaluation of the Belgian elite referees and assistant referees. He is a former professional football player, having played for over 25 years in the Belgian national leagues, as well as in the national youth selections. He was also involved 4 years as head coach of football teams in the second and third national league.
