Spreekopdrachten Werk je spreekopdrachten eerst uit in Word en neem ze daarna op. Je mag zelf kiezen welk programma je daarvoor gebruikt. Sla ze op als mp3 en laat jou docent ze beluisteren. Vocabulaire Op staan 10 woordenlijsten klaar. Neem ze over en bestudeer ze. Per periode zullen 5 woordenlijsten getoetst worden. Grammar - Nedercom- Highfive Elke student heeft toegang tot het Highfive programma. Dit programma behandelt de Engelse grammatica. Regelmatig zal de studiewijzer verwijzen naar dit programma. 4 Talenacademie - Koning Willem I College - s- Hertogenbosch Info leerjaar 1 Beste student, Zoals je straks kunt zien op de studiewijzer, is het programma opgebouwd uit 5 vaardigheden: lezen, luisteren, schrijven, spreken en gesprekken voeren. Lesmethode We werken met readers en met beroepsgerichte webquests op MasterEnglish.nl. De oefeningen variëren van dialogen, uitspraakoefeningen en woordtrainingen tot schrijfopdrachten en presentaties. In de taallessen werk je aan je taalvaardigheid; dit doe je samen met je docent, zelfstandig en eventueel met de native speaker. Om een indruk te krijgen van je niveau doe je eerst een intake. Dit gesprek is a.d.h.v. de eerste opdracht van je reader 'Who am I. Laat wekelijks je opdrachten nakijken en aftekenen op je studiewijzer. Examinering en toekenning studiepunten Examinering vindt plaats aan het einde van leerjaar 2. Het examen bestaat uit een toets Spreken, Gesprekken voeren, Lezen, Luisteren en Schrijven. We beoordelen volgens het Europees raamwerk. Dit is een systeem van 6 taalniveaus: A1 - A2 - B1 - B2 - C1 en C2. A1 is het laagste, C2 het hoogste. Het gewenste eindniveau is B1. Per vaardigheid krijg je een cijfer. Compensatie tussen de vaardigheden is mogelijk maar gemiddeld moet Engels minimaal met een 5 worden afgesloten (let wel: je tweede moderne vreemde taal moet dan minstens een 5.5 zijn). De examinering staat los van de te behalen studiepunten. Per periode kun je 1 studiepunt behalen. Het studiepunt krijg je op basis van je inzet, de gemaakte opdrachten en het resultaat van de periodetoets. Tot slot Mocht het zo zijn dat je Engelse taalvaardigheid ver beneden het gewenste niveau ligt dan heb je de mogelijkheid hulplessen te volgen bij een instructeur; meld je daarvoor aan in het OLC van de Talenacademie. Look them up and write down the translations. Why Marketing? A career in marketing can mean many things. Some who work in the field of marketing are focused on advertising and for others it is more closely related to sales jobs. A marketing job may require you to be heavily involved in creative design or instead, place you in the role of analytics and research. Why marketing? Well, why not? Marketing has such a wide range of positions, there s likely to be one that will suit you! From management to consulting and large corporations to small businesses, there will always be a need for marketing professionals. How can businesses find buyers for its products otherwise? Remember, even churches ring their bells! Why Do You Want to Work in Marketing? If you find you are interested in promotion, branding, selling, communications, creative design, or research, then you are probably well- suited to a marketing career. Marketing can be a stimulating job where you have the opportunity to be creative. Marketing is interactive and you may find yourself working with interesting people on exciting campaigns. You can also incorporate your personal interests into your career by targeting a marketing career with a specific focus. For instance, say you are very involved with and interested in environmental issues. You can steer your education and career in that direction. Become a marketing specialist in the area of your choosing! The Marketing Career Things to Consider As we ve discussed marketing jobs come in many different shapes and sizes, the nature of your work and the demand for your skills will depend on the industry in which you are employed. The good news is Internet use and the growth of social media has played a significant role in the need for marketing professionals. Internet presence is extremely important to business success these days and they also must communicate effectively through the use of social media. Strong communication skills are essential marketing. Keep in mind, many marketing professionals work under tight deadlines. In some marketing careers extensive travel is required, in others, none at all. If you are considering a career in marketing, take the time to research different professional areas and the requirements for each. Weigh the pros and cons of working in different environments and industries. Once you ve done this you can target your marketing career and then do what it takes to market yourself to the hiring organization! 8

Sharpen your communication Learning new words is not about confusing people with obscure vocabulary it s about expressing yourself more clearly, and with more precision. The more words you know, the higher chance you ll have the right one at hand when the opportunity arises. Moreover, having a vast vocabulary will allow you to better understand the world around you to read between the lines, and question what others have to say. One thing we strongly believe here at KW1C is that practice is everything. When you re learning a new language, you should try to start using it as soon as possible otherwise, you ll fail! The more vocabulary you know, the more you ll understand, no matter how good or bad your grammar & pronunciation is. And the more you ll understand, the more you ll be motivated to actually use the language, hence improving on everything else. Simply knowing that the English word for postzegel is stamp means that if nothing else, you can send a postcard home to your family regardless of how many grammar books you have failed to read. b. THE INTERVIEW Task: Find an interesting person to have an interview with (think of a senior student, a parent, a teacher, a manager or even your favourite artist). First make a list of at least 5 questions. These could be about life in general, education, work, work- study, career, hobbies, norms and values, etc. Do the interview and then write an English article/report about the interview. Make sure you correctly report what the interviewee said. Quote (citeer) the interviewee here and there to make the article more interesting. Check the next page for some interviewing tips and for some examples. Requirements: A minimum of 300 words. Op het juiste moment de juiste vragen stellen Timing is ontzettend belangrijk in een interview: wanneer kaart je welk onderwerp aan en op welke manier? Wanneer moet je doorvragen of juist een samenvatting geven? Omdat ieder interview anders is, bestaan er geen ultieme richtlijnen voor de juiste opbouw van een vraaggesprek. Over het algemeen geldt dat het verstandig is in het begin van een interview je gesprekspartner vooral aan te moedigen door bijvoorbeeld te knikken. Hoe word je een goede interviewer? Om een goed interview te kunnen afnemen moet je onder andere: Goed kunnen luisteren. Wat vertelt je gesprekspartner nou precies? Wat houdt hij achter? Wat bedoelt hij eigenlijk? Je moet niet alleen zijn verhaal aanhoren, je moet die informatie ook direct verwerken. Je gaat meteen na of je begrijpt wat hij zegt, het een antwoord op jouw vraag is en of je hier verder op door moet gaan. Stil kunnen zijn. De taak van een interviewer is het stellen van vragen. Toch kan juist een stilte in een gesprek extra informatie opleveren. Een dergelijke korte rustpauze geeft je gesprekspartner de kans om nog eens na te denken over zijn vorige antwoord. De juiste houding aannemen. Een geïnterviewde vertelt het meest wanneer hij zich op zijn gemak voelt. Aan jou als interviewer de taak om een sfeer te creëren waarin hij het makkelijkst zijn verhaal kwijt kan. Je lichaamshouding en de toon waarop je spreekt zijn bepalend voor de sfeer tijdens een gesprek. Je houding moet je afstemmen op het gespreksdoel. Goed voorbereid zijn. Je moet voldoende van je gesprekspartner afweten om de juiste vragen te kunnen stellen en de gegeven informatie naar waarde te kunnen schatten. Example: (interview with illustrator Will Terrell) 15

SPEAKING AND SPELLING Whenever you re making a telephone call in English, it is essential to know how to spell names and pronounce figures and numbers. Before you make the call, you have to be well prepared. - Have pen and paper at hand - Telephone/ extension numbers - List with questions and subjects - Make sure that you know the telephone alphabet - To whom do you wish to talk? - Can you spell his/her name? - What is his/her function? - What s the message you would like to leave in case of absence? Have you ever started to leave a message on someone s voic , and then when you heard the beep sound, you didn t know what to say? When you re speaking a foreign language, talking without preparation can be challenging, especially when you cannot see or hear the person you re talking to. But with a little practice, you ll be a voic pro. Task: Situation: You have seen a fantastic holiday villa on Ibiza that you would love to rent for the summer with your friends. Since your Spanish is not that good you decide to call them in English for some information. Make up your own questions about for instance: availability - costs facilities - distance from the beach etc. Unfortunately you can t get a hold of them so you decide to leave a message on their voic . Here is an effective format you can use when you have to leave a voic message. - Greet the one you call - Identify yourself - Give some background of why you are calling (where did you find the ad?) - State what you are asking him/her to do - Give the information needed - Ask if he/she could call you back to confirm - Give your telephone number, spell your last name and give your address. - A friendly close to your message Task: First write out what you are going to say and then record your message. 16

If you re tired of going to class or reading a book, there s nothing better than learning English through movies and film. Is Learning English Through Movies and Film Right For Me? Learning a foreign language is already hard. And the culture is different from your own. So sometimes, you might have trouble understanding what actors are saying, or what they re doing on the screen. 3 Reasons Why Learning English With Movies and Film Works Perhaps you re still wondering if you can still really learn any English by watching movies. After all, watching movies is supposed to be fun, right? So, how can you learn while having so much fun with the film? And more importantly, why should you learn English with movies instead of with textbooks? 1. You ll get to learn real English not textbook English. The English spoken in movies is very natural. It s also very close to what you ll hear if you speak with native English speakers too. This will help improve your spoken English. 2. You learn English words in context. 3. You hear how things are said. Task: 1. Choose any movie or series you like. 2. Bring your dictionary and choose a movie with subtitles! So when you hear a word you re interested in, look it up! Because you went through the trouble to understand it you ll be able to remember that word for a long time too! 3. Repeat short phrases! 4. When you watch the movie the first time, just turn on the subtitles. But if you get the chance to watch it a second time, try turning off the subtitles. 5. Write a review on your chosen movie following the format below. a. Think of a catchy subtitle. b. Give a short description of the contents. c. Describe your favourite scene? d.
